PlayStation 5 launches in November, starting at $399 for PS5 Digital Edition and $499 for PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive

New games announced at PS5 Showcase, including Final Fantasy XVI, Hogwarts Legacy, and a new God of War title

This is truly an exciting time for all of us at PlayStation. Over the past few months, we’ve been able to show you a glimpse of the stunning new games being created for PlayStation 5, taking advantage of the console’s unique capabilities to deliver lightning-fast loading, heightened immersion, and a whole new generation of experiences. And we’re excited that the time for you to experience these brave new adventures is almost here.

As we have just announced in our PS5 Showcase, we’re only a couple of months away from launching the next generation of play. Starting on November 12, PS5 will be available in seven key markets: the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. The global rollout will continue on November 19 with launches throughout the rest of the world*, including Europe, Middle East, South America, Asia and South Africa. PS5 Digital Edition will be available for a recommended retail price (RRP) of $399.99 USD/$499 CAD/¥39,980/€399.99/£359.99 (MSRP), and PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be available for an RRP of $499.99 USD/$629 CAD/¥49,980/€499.99/£449.99 (MSRP). Pre-orders will be available starting as early as tomorrow at select retailers, so please check with your local retailer.

We’re pleased to provide choice to gamers with two PS5 console options at launch, depending on if you want a digital-only experience or prefer disc-based gaming. Whichever PS5 you choose, you’ll enjoy the same breathtaking, next-gen gaming experiences. Both PS5 models use the same custom processor with integrated CPU and GPU for high-fidelity visuals, including 4K graphics and ray-tracing support, as well as the same ultra-high-speed SSD with integrated I/O for lightning-fast loading. PS5’s 3D audio and the DualSense Wireless Controller will also provide the same heightened sense of immersion on all PS5s.

We are proud of the breadth of games being created for PS5, and it’s our goal to continue filling our portfolio with new, rich experiences from the most talented game creators in the industry. Today we shared a sneak peek at the following new games coming to PS5:

These newly revealed titles, along with the games we’ve shown previously, represent the best lineup we’ve ever seen in PlayStation history. Games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, and Demon’s Souls will launch alongside the console. Our own Worldwide Studios titles will be priced from US$49.99 to US$69.99 (RRP) on PS5.

Additionally, we know that the PS4 community will transition to PS5 at different times, and we’re happy to announce PS4 versions of some of our exclusives. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will also launch on PS4. While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch. The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive.

For PlayStation Plus members, we’ll have a special new offering on PS5 – the PlayStation Plus Collection**. PS5 owners with PS Plus will be able to download and play a curated library of PS4 games that defined the generation, like Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, Persona 5 and many more. The PS Plus Collection will be an added benefit to the existing PS4 benefits that PS Plus members receive for a single subscription price.

This year has been unlike any other, and there have been many challenges the world has faced. Everyone at PlayStation, along with all of our partners in development, publishing, technology, and retail, have devoted a lot of effort to launch PlayStation 5 in time for the holiday season. We’re all working closely together to achieve our mission of delivering the best that gaming has to offer to our community. I truly want to thank you, the fans, for your tremendous support (and patience!), while we take this journey to PS5. We can’t wait for November to arrive – when you’ll be able to get a PS5 console in your hands to begin exploring new adventures and creating new epic memories for many years to come.

  • I got the last pre order at my GameStop. The digital ones were already gone when I got there but I didn’t care cause I don’t want that . I like my physical media and can buy used games when they have them. But is it really only 500 gigs?

  • Wow, that EU price raise is brutal… I used to think it was a little crappy that $59.99 games only had the currency symbol changed into 59.99€ when “converting to euros”, which meant we were paying $69 dollars worth.
So now US will have the price at $69.99 and EU at 79.99€.. That’s 94 dollars per regular standard version of a game.

I was tempted to buy the digital PS5 version at first, but if PSN store will be selling our regular priced games for 79.99€, I will absolutely have to go with the drive version and keep buying my games from retailers around here who have no issue selling at 59€ – or I guess if the price goes up by 10 dollars, at 65€.

    • I’ve had every generation of Ps and was ready to pre order this morning. I am super glad i saw the prices as this is a clear sign for me. Ill go with xbxo and game pass. Yeah i miss some exclusive games but i will not be paying 80 euro per game where a US customer pays 58 euro for the same game.

Sony made a major mistake and best way to respond this is not to pay any more money to them.

They’ve been taking advantage of us EU gamers with currency changes in past. This is too much specially on an age where digital sales take over CD sales where companies can evade all the production costs and their products reach 100x more consumer compared to 10 year ago.

  • “Pre-orders” start tomorrow(September 17,2020)??? Then why are there folks already saying they’ve ordered theirs and now retailers are stating they’re sold out??? Epic fail yet again Sony…..

    • It’s a freaking disaster. They made it seem like we would have days to week at least and then this happens. That along with their “we believe in generations” marketing nonsense.

  • Why are games 70 and controllers also 70 kinda high dont you think? 60 isn’t enough???

  • 80 euro for a game ? Really ? Are you out of your mind ? It’s 29$ more than the us price ? Bye bye Sony, you lost me, i rather play on my pc. Total lack of respect for us, and i’m a pretty good customer, i have a lot, and i mean A LOT of games, but 80 euro for a game is a big NO. Bye

  • Is PlayStation still planning on releasing special edition consoles? Such as miles morales Spider-Man black and red console?

  • Does anybody know when will the PS5 launch in Hong Kong??

  • when will preorders take place

  • What’s the price of this in NZD please?

  • It has 802.11 ax wifi? That’s essentially wifi 6. Great, the range and speed should see a massive improvement with wifi 6.

  • Pre orders are actually going live early and have already sold out! Any word on when more pre orders will be available?

  • Well Target, Walmart, Best Buy,. game stop, all sold out. I got nintendoed, well here looking forward to April to get one (based on past experience, it always 6 months before I get a console, and I will not pay scalpers)

Well here hoping maybe Amazon I will get lucky, or maybe I will be one of the few lucky ones to get selected to pre-order from Sony. But I am not going to hold my breath.

  • I need to see the full ps5 experience before I pre order(UI), so guess I’ll wait for the next batch. ☹️

  • Already sold out at Walmart, Best Buy, Target and Gamestop. I don’t know when Amazon will start. Whatever happened with the sign-ups? Did anyone get contacted or was that just to build up hype?

    • All hype. I signed up for best buy, gamestop, walmart, and playstation…Got nothing, after holding a grand for the past few months , waiting.

  • Ok, so that was the most messed up pre order launch ever. I really hope that Playstation sends out some invites to order a PS5. All US retailers are sold out and it’s not tomorrow yet. Even expensive bundles are gone. Where was the forewarning?

  • PlayStation won’t listen, but please reconsider your game cost. 70$US affects other countries. Europe is going up, so is Canada. It’ll be 90$ before tax, so over 100$ afterwards. As amazing as games can be, that’s my limit. Hopefully competition with other publishers like Ubisoft or CD Projekt red will change your mind. worse case, still hopefully it’s a initial think only, until they sell enough ps5 to have a large enough user base to warrant going back to 60$ US.

    • You know that costs always get passed to the customer, just how capitalism works. The better games get, the more content and work involved, the more expensive. I’m willing to pay for quality, that’s why I’m really picky about what new releases I will pay for. All up to the individual though.

  • Congrats on the event and release date announcement, but sorry, I’m not paying €80 for games.

  • Have the preorder emails been sent out yet? I’m trying to figure out if i should just cut my losses and preorder from like best buy or Amazon or wait to get one from playstation

  • Day 1 for me but honestly theres no USBs on the back?

    UGH

Literally the best thing about the Pro was not having the stupid hard drive cable awkwardly wrapped around the console. So ugly. What a letdown

  • I was caught off guard with this one. Everyone said preorders tomorrow but stores started selling them asap. 😢 They sold out fast, I’m just hoping I get picked for the PlayStation direct preorders. 🙏

  • The list of launch titles for PS5 is so small they had to put Spider-Man on their twice?

  • Does the PlayStation 5 have dolby vision support for 4k blu-ray movies?

    • not only for bluray, but for streaming too! ( Netflix, Vudu, etc all support DV ) It needs to have Dolby Vision support and Dolby Atmos as well!

  • What a let down for the retail pre-orders. I was really excited to be apart the early invitations, but I’m guessing from reading everyone’s post, that no one received an early invitation? Hopefully sony addresses this tomorrow because this can’t be what they had planned.

  • i wished more of the console was shown like the UI, the new share features, gameplay recording etc., a more in depth look into the console experience, i hope such things will be showcased soon

  • Super disappointed in not being able to preorder a PS5. Have owned all generations, and pre-ordered a 4 at launch and a Pro Death Stranding without any problems. Had a PS Plus since the 4 launched and no warning or ability to get the 5. This is bad and disappointing. Makes me want to skip the generation after being teased and ‘invited’ to preorder. Poor way to treat someone who has given you a lot of money through the years. Heck, I just wanted to give you more of my money. Lol smdh.

  • So stoked. Hopefully I can get my hands on one. I’ve had the last 2 gens on launch day with the PS2 coming w/in the first month or two. Sucks it’s not a TB drive though. Even a TB is a bit small but I can make due. Hopefully those proprietary drives are talked about soon and available at launch as well. I know in the past Sony said they’d be available, I believe, at launch…

side note: Cringe at the $70 cost for games. Looks like I won’t be filling 2-3+ rows of my shelf up up next gen. Time are tough, games are selling at record sales numbers. Just a bad move and time for it. Not to mention there’s already $60, $70-80 and even $120+ versions for any major game. And for reference, each row holds 50 games so that’s 50-100+ games I won’t be able to buy next gen. Demon’s Souls look fantabulous but $70 there too? I’ve already bought the game 2 times now. Once from Playasia for the Hong Kong/English version because I knew Sony wasn’t going to bring it stateside then again a year or so later when Atlus finally released a US version. whatever, life goes on but that $70 price tag sucks

  • Curious as to why my forgotten sub account that does not have PS Plus or much of anything was the one to receive a potential ‘invite’ to possibly preorder. Kinda weird and disheartening the way this launch is unfolding…

  • What a letdown. No PS5 at launch for me, maybe in 2022 when GoW 2 will launch (we know a 2021 launch is unrealistic).

  • How can I preorder a PS5? I would love to surprise my husband for his 40th bday! He’s bummed because we couldn’t get a preorder in at Gamestop Target Bestbuy or Walmart. Please help!

  • Ample warning for pre-orders is not 10 minutes. Managed to miss pre-ordering from Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Gamestop because you failed to live up to what you said you’d do.

At this point I have seen very little from Jim Ryan’s leadership that makes me confident PlayStation is in good hands.

  • As early as tomorrow huu? Stores are putting online that they are sold out of them. Did the people who read this just get shafted?

  • Will the ps5 come in black version and if so, when will it be available to pre-order?

  • “Pre-orders will be available starting as early as tomorrow at select retailers, so please check with your local retailer.”

Every retailer sold out hours ago today. How did you lose control of that lol

    • I thought tomorrow was the date for official preorder, that’s why I wasn’t prepared, until best buy sent out the notifications regarding PS5 preorder just in seconds majority of the retailers website was going haywire I was getting no luck entering payment to complete the transaction, if anyone else didn’t get a preorder welcome to the club, eventually sooner or later we will get one, enjoy life until then.

  • hi, where is the FAQ?

    1. Can we move over our current collection of PS4 games and enjoy a performance boost automatically? How is it going to work?
    2. Same question for PSVR
    3. What are the Day 1 titles available?

  • The pre order registration page has been closed.

  • why you guys send an e-mail asking for ps id for pre-orders when today was on pre-order everywhere and you guys didn’t notify us

  • WHERE WAS THE NOTIFICATION FOR PREORDERING!!!!
SOMEONE WITH INSIGHT CALL (229)415-4415 PLZZZZZ

  • Remember when they said we’d have ample notice for pre-orders and then every retailer sold out the day before Sony told us we could pre-order them? That was fun. Really fun. Thanks guys.

  • If all the games are cross gen I might as well keep my ps4 huh?

  • How dare you not show us the best game coming to PS5? Little Big Planet? LOL … its okay I forgive you. I preordered. :)

  • I have spent hours upon hours from all retailers site adding the ps5 disc version to the cart and the traffic of hundreds or even thousands of others trying to complete their check out was a complete failure for me, I took a peek at eBay and boy the price these scalpers are setting up is doubled the msrp there’s even bids that somehow people are so desperate are willing to pay, if I can’t get a PS5 on day one, I’ll Wait, I work 6 days a week and barely have time to game, still I’m happy for Sony bringing the PS5 to next generation and of course play has no limits.

  • Please tell me Sony’s preorders will be much better than retailers… Press release said pre orders for retailers would be as early as tomorrow…they did them today….

    lets go Sony

    • PlayStation direct msrp retailer price will be normal of course with tax base on your state if not in the U.S. it’s gonna be normal price, if you register your online PlayStation ID since Sony first give us the ability to do so, the chances of actually receiving a message back from Sony is very slim, if you did neither any of these, continue playing the waiting game, and check other retailers you might be in luck.

  • What about backwards compatibility? Rumor was that it was going to be compatible with older consoles (ps4, ps3, ps2, and ps1). Is this true? If not, I don’t see a reason to upgrade my current ps4.

  • I will be getting the disc based PS5

  • I am super hyped for PS5. Playstation knocked it out of the park with that showing. Just made me want it more than I already did. So what games are a few bucks more. If you like what they are delivering then buy it support the development. Easy as that. I am a fan, a day one buyer of things I support. I mean you can even buy used and wait for sales . I have such a huge backlog of games from this gen anyway. But you can’t say there are not awesome sales all the time, especially digital. But I’ll be getting the disk drive version and get the best of it all. Play ps4/ps5 disk and ps4/ps5 digital media. I can’t wait til November .. GAMES GAMES games hell yeah GAMES and lovin it.

  • I’m so on edge I have enough for the digital hoping I’m blessed wit the option to get it. Figures crossed, so emotion

  • Is it true that the PS5 is sold out because certain retailers released the preorders early?

  • Good luck to you guys I hope it goes well pre orders went live at about 6PM EST and were sold out completely by 8PM EST MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!!!! Thanks Sony Thanks Jim Ryan you said everyone can;t go with us how correct you were sir!!! Everyone will not but I sure as hell WILL PS5!!!!!!!!!

  • If they don’t have fortnite in this I will not purchase it

  • Europe is the biggest PlayStation market with nearly 50 million PS4 units sold. Every European, from Germany to Spain, should be very disappointed that they are now going to be asked by Sony to drop 80 freaking euros for every single new game they purchase. Possibly the worst decision Sony has made this year. If I still lived in Europe, I admit I would stick with PlayStation, but I would certainly buy way fewer games.

This is just mean. Not cool, Sony.
