New look for PS5 console this holiday season

Smaller PS5 design comes with 1TB storage for PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition; new model provides option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to PS5 Digital Edition.

As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching. To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.

The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte. If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the U.S. at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.

The recommended retail prices for the new PS5 model are as follows beginning with the rollout in November at participating retailers.

A horizontal stand will be included with the new PS5 model. Also a new Vertical Stand compatible with all PS5 models will be sold separately at 29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY.

A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. Prices for the PS5 Console Covers will start at 54.99 USD | 54.99 EURO | 44.99 GBP | 7,480 JPY. Additional colors will be released in the future.

We are ten days away from the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with additional games including Alan Wake 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launching shortly after. With these fantastic games coming, in addition to recent releases such as EA Sports FC 24, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, and Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s plenty for gamers to play on PS5 this holiday season.

    A few questions come to mind as I see the systems. One is why it is just as expensive as the regular systems. Also, I don’t see a mention of expanded memory. So, yea that price is questionable.

    I’m not the biggest fan of this design. I think it’s nice they made it smaller and I get the lines so you can add the disc drive, but it just looks so bad, and the weird dent at the top of the PS5 is ugly and pointless. And having the new stand have a metallic sheen makes no sense and does not go with the theme of the PS5. Also going back on the size, putting the DualSense in the promotional material right next to the console makes the console look tiny, I know there not much they could do but seriously it looks like a joke when put next to the DualSense.

    It must suck for the owners of the original Digital PS5. Why limit yourself.

    Discs will always be better. Not just for games but for Blu Rays and 4K movies.

    Lol why do we need pronouns? It’s getting ridiculous.. Anyway the pc option to play games should be better though. The premium edition only gets you games that are not that great. If you truly care about your fans you add all the new games coming out too so that it’s worth paying for it every month.

    I like this new design. I feel like the original design of the ps5 grew on me, and now that there’s a new design coming out in November that looks great, I’m ok with it. As a PlayStation Fanboy I will say that this glossy and matte look (similar to the original PlayStation 4) will be hard to adapt to, but looking at it compared to the leaked new Xbox Series X design… Yeah the New ps5 looks better and was done better in my opinion.

    I’m going to be honest. it offers no performance upgrade so I don’t think im going to get this new slimmer model. I am happy with the go ps5 from 3 years ago, and I think once they make a ps5 pro with some massive performance upgrades, then id upgrade. I would love to see more psvr to announcements though

    Truly, we are not owed anything. SONY reserves the right to re-design, refresh and upgrade the playstation. You as the consumer has a responsibility of making wise spending choices. I’d say it makes sense buying the disc version of the console because you save money owing to the higher cost of buying it later. I bought the disc version because I’m not yet able to shell out a huge sum to purchase a UHD Blu-ray player.

    I also don’t think we need a powerful PS5. If you want something more powerful build a rig with the NVIDIA RTX 4090 and maybe an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X3D. That’s not to say that if a more powerful PS5 is manufactured, I wouldn’t buy it. Like I said earlier, SONY has it’s right. The consumers have their rights. Just be wise in your spending.

    PLEASE PLEASE provide a release date for this Slim Model soon so I can figure out what to do and get this stress off of my mind! I

    This announcement completely messed up a plan years in the making, and I don’t know if I can be patient much longer or if I’m going to have to grab an OG Disc version immediately. I don’t wanna then find out slim comes in a week. That would kill me!

    I have been waiting all this time to buy a PS5 because they were so hard to get, and most games I really needed to play were still coming to PS4 too. But now there are several games that I NEED to play that are PS5 only, so it’s time and long overdue. Devs are making taking advantage of the PS5 power finally!

    Finally to the point where these games I need have started to release or are coming in the next 2 weeks. Alan Wake 2 is exactly 2 weeks away. Spider-Man 2 is 1.

    I have been waiting for Alan Wake’s “thought to be canceled” sequel, soo this is big for me. I planned on taking the 27th off and having a system before the 20th playing Spider-Man 2

    Not only is my wife onboard, she’s actually pushing for me to just go get one…she’s buying it for me for my birthday, and planned to give it to me early! (Like, we were going to go tonight or tmro)

    This announcement has now left me in a predicament. Do I wait it out, and just own these games so I can stare at the box til [hopefully] November? Or do I just get one now? I mean, there’s not really much change happening…other than extra HD which I’m sure I’ll be expanding either way.

    But I planned to go horizontal anyway, and the slim has a horizontal stand. It’s not THAT much smaller, but I like that it’s even slightly smaller.

    I don’t see any better pricing on the disc version of the 2020 model going on right now besides a promotion from slick deals that says something about a free digital game from Sony. But the link doesn’t tell me it I’m eligible. It says I’d have to buy and setup a PS5 and then login to my PSN, and I MIGHT see the offer? That alone might push me towards buying one later today, but I’d like to know if I’d definitely be eligible for this Promo.

    Anyone know how to find out for sure? It ends 10/20. The “invite only” note at the top is what makes it confusing. I’m on a year PS+ Extra plan…is that sufficient?

    Ugghh…this is so stressful. 😂

    Sony – Please help my nerves settle. I’m a 42 year old married video game nerd whose wife is working second shift for a few months. My evenings are me solo for a few, time to game again like I’m 12 years old!

    Who will buy? Reasons not to buy include-
    Sony raised the base price of PS plus to $80 a year apparently trying to make up money for low subs on the higher tiers
    Gamepass is $16 a month but includes all Microsoft first party day ones like Redfall, Starfield, Forza and now Activision Blizzard games
    The PS5 hardware is inferior to the Xbox X that sells for the same price
    Sony is full of WOKE developers who destroy their games like Neil Druckman

    I don’t exactly want to be mean, but that new design looks DISGUSTING. The tray takes up almost a third of the console, it’s WAY too thin, and they are just gonna straight up scrap the original, which in my opinion, actually looks good. Also by the way, the straight up made people buy the vertical stand separately, like I’m sure that these consoles cost the exact same. At least the PS4 design looked good with the slim, but they just made this paper thin so it looks like a Chinese knock-off.
    Overall I HATE this redesign and this is one the only times I’m yelling at a console for looking bad. Old PS5, all I can say to you is, RIP.
    Also I know that nobody cares about this, but in the PS5 Pro, why does it have 8K? do these guys know that 8K TVs are, oh I don’t know, EXPENSIVE AS HECK, like the cheapest I could find is just under $2000. Many people are using the PS5 on a 1080p or 1440p monitor, oh and yeah, you know the OG PS5 that had real time ray-tracing? Well they say the have “more accurate ray-tracing”, like honestly I would say there should be no more consoles after the PS5 and the Xbox series, cause they already have real-time ray-tracing and 4K, which is still developing, as well as more powerful than your next door neighbor’s $1750 super computer.
    That concludes everything, if you made it to this point congratulations! You get nothing go back to Reddit and read posts on there.

      Also i just read the prices and the digital costs more than last time. and I don’t care about the “1TB of internal storage” cause I’m not gonna sell my original PS5 for $300 and then pay $200 for 400 extra GB when I can buy 2TB of extra storage for $100. The console covers are $5 more, and there is an external blu-ray player for people who really like wasting their money cause it costs more (digital and disk thing) than a disk PS5, and the vertical stand is $25? Sorry I’ll stick with my original PS5.

    Very ugly design for me, I think there should be more alternatives at least make a case that has an option to change the design I waited several years from the launch to see if the slim version changed the design I expected something better but the new console is the same Ugly design, only smaller, I’m totally disappointed, even the square Xbox box is better than that.
