New look for PS5 console this holiday season

Smaller PS5 design comes with 1TB storage for PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition; new model provides option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to PS5 Digital Edition.

As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching. To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.

The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte. If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the U.S. at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.

We are ten days away from the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with additional games including Alan Wake 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launching shortly after. With these fantastic games coming, in addition to recent releases such as EA Sports FC 24, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, and Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s plenty for gamers to play on PS5 this holiday season.

I want to thank all of you for your continued passion and support.

  • DISAPPOINTED! MASSIVE “L”!!!

–1TB is not a worthy upgrade over 825GB (should have been 2TB, I bet they downgraded the NAND chips to QLC)
–Design with split plates is cringy impractical and personally I find it ugly.
–Smaller meaning lower production costs (a.k.a. “slim model” when price is traditionally slashed), but at the same launch price and DIGITAL model is 50$ more!? LOL!
–Adding optional optical drive to DIGITAL model later on ends up costing more than buying STANDARD model.

Sony needs a wake up call like in the PS3 early days.

  • Is this a betta version of the original model PS5?

  • Pls when is it coming out I need to know 😔 😫

  • I see there no mention of expandable storage like in the current Ps5 lineup. Would the mentioned 1TB capacity be upgradable, or is there still an option to add and expand storage?

    • It would be incredibly baffling if they were to remove the expandable storage, it’s pretty safe to assume it will remain possible to add more capacity internally (NVMe) and externally (USB).

  • I mean it don’t look great let’s be honest :/

  • Sony…

I try to be as understanding as possible with what you do with PlayStation, and I’m pretty you already know this, but raising the price of any kind of product or service you sell to your consumers and fanbase is a very, VERY bad idea.

A move like this will always upset and anger many of your fans and drive them to your competitors. If you’re a big corporation who makes so much money, shouldn’t you already know this? When you lose fans, you also lose revenue.

Now, the PS5 Slim itself looks cool, though. Just wanted to have a word regarding the all digital slim model, since it’s similar to the PS Plus price hike from not long ago.

  • will it also have an NVME expansion to add my 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD?

  • While, I don’t personally like the split plate idea. I think it’s great that they did this, but I think it’s ridiculous that they didn’t change the price even a little. The PS5 is a huge piece of machinery that made it very difficult for fitting for a lot of people, so this’ll be really good in the long run.

  • Don’t mention anything about adding extra storage. Can we add another internal PCIe SSD or do we have to replace the 1TB.

  • New digital version that is more expensive…

  • AC power requirements? chipset Die sizes?

  • Would love to see a teardown to see what changes where made to improve overall system performance when it comes to the unit cooling down.

  • Great job sony on the new ps5 model but the gloss side bad idea will scratch & damage easy & I defo pick up new stand for my original wifi router ps5

  • why don’t include the stand , it’s ridicoulus pay for something that should be included

  • Let us play our entire digital playstation library on this new sku

  • Wouldn’t it be great if i could buy a separate drive that played psone discs. Etc

    • Agreed. I was thinking that as well.
It should be shaped either like a PS One or PS2 console, as a separate stand-alone unit
These disc drives don’t support CDs anymore unfortunately.
But, I’d get Sony to manufacture CD laser capabilities as well.

Just having a PlayStation Media player that can transfer physical games from PS4/PS5/PS6, that could play PS1/PS2 and hopefully PS3.
That it can rip CDs and play Movies.

Which such a device, it could last forever for PS6/PS7/PS8 etc.
It would drive down the cost of the system by buying a separate device.

  • This is how it looks 👉 🤢🤮

  • Huh. 2 Frontal USB-C, that’s different, there was only 1 USB C and 1 USB A.

  • Will I be able to turn in my old one for a reduced price on the new one?

  • Questions:
Does the new one has a reduced power usage?
When will we see the PS5 Pro?

  • They made no mention of internal Storage expansion so maybe they are relying upon the extra USB-C Ports

  • The next blu-ray add-on should be shaped either like a PS One or PS2 console, as a separate stand-alone unit

  • Will this new update of PS5 plate can be use on the original PS5 or it will sold another one example blue original ps5 plate can use on this new design PS5 or not?

  • I feel like my physical PS5 is outdated now. Sigh… I’m tired of trying to keep up with gaming. You buy one version the next version immediately comes out thsts better. None of this stuff is worth buying. People will have the slim then they’ll talk PS5 pro or PS6. It just never settles down.

    • There’s literally nothing “better” about this except having 1TB rather than 825GB base storage. Everything else (except the size) is the same. The barely increase storage is a nothingburger if you’ve installed a m.2 nvme.

    • Yeah, your PS5 is the standard until the PS6 comes out around 2027/2028.. definitely not outdated until that comes out.. as games are made focusing on the ps5

    • If there is a pro model just skip it and wait for the ps6 lol still 4 more years until that brother!! enjoy now!

    • Your current version is fine. A Slim console always comes out about three years or so after the original. You shouldn’t feel the need to go out and get one if you already have one.

  • Will this new design support the front and back plate for the original PS5? Or the plate need to buy a new one to install?

  • Looking forward with great expectation for the Cobalt blue skin.MW3 let’s game

  • Can I drop my existing expansion M2.SSD from my existing digital PS5 into this new slim? Or will I have to add another M2 to the slim and do a transfer?

  • The pricing for the console I am completely cool with. But I find it very funny that Sony chose to sell a vertical stand for $30.00. 🤣 what??

  • Let’s welcome the new Apple Playstation 5!
Same price for 3 years old hardware that is now cheaper to manufacture, and no stand included?
HIGHER price for the digital version? No considerable increase in storage?
    Seriously???
    I was waiting eagerly for this mid-life update. What a disappointment… 😞

  • What worries me is that the specifications do not say that it will have a port for Nvme memory like the ps5 fat. That would be a serious mistake.

  • Its really amazing. I am thinking of buying a new PS5, so, better I will wait for this model to be available, commercially. Thanks Sony
    You guys are awesome
I have started playing since PS1 and the journey continues!

  • can we get wallpapers back tho…. please 🙏

  • My only concern is can I transfer my m.2 SSD that I have in my current PS5 into the slimmer consoles? That’s it.

  • Very ordinary that you’re charging extra for the vertical stand, especially when the PS5 is advertised in that position. Once again, Sony trying to wring every $ they can out of their customers. You should have kept a stand similar to the original PS5 in the pack and then offered the new fancy one as extra if need be.

  • I just want everyone to stop crying and ****** , buy your playstation and enjoy it!!

  • Nonsense like this is why no one will miss Jim Ryan.

  • Really nice revision, I noticed the lack of bloodborne 60fps etc however

  • Seems like someone got the dimensions wrong on this spec sheet. 96mm high? It’s less than 4” tall? It’s only 2/3 the height of a standard game case?

  • Let me get this straight… You made a PS5 revision where the tech specs are the same with minor changes such as increasing the storage and making the PS5 shrink down to 30% of its size volume from the original model. Now, you want to charge customers more if they want a vertical stand and or a disk drive attachment!? Let’s do the math here. PS5 with disk drive cost $499.99. The vertical stand $29.99. The total cost would be $529.98 plus tax. The PS5 digital edition $449.99, let’s throw in the vertical stand that doesn’t come in the box. $29.99. The total would be $479.98 plus tax. If you throw in the disk drive attachment if you want to play games using a disk will cost you $79.99. If you include the vertical stand, the disk drive attachment, and the digital PS5. The total amount would be $559.97 plus sale tax.

I will not tell people what to do with their money. If ya’ll want to buy the console go for it. But this is a hard pass for me! I will invest my money into a different product that have better value than this. Thank you Sony for showing me that I shouldn’t buy your product. And this whole excuse of inflation is just way for a corporation to get away with price increases and just to make a quick profit for the company and their investors.

  • Feel like Sony is just milking everything they can….. hardly any games, price increases galore, TLOU remastered (again)….. If I wanted an Xbox i’d buy an xbox……

  • I’m 61 I’m old school. I spend $500. I want something almost as big as my house. I want my $500 to look like $500. When I buy stereo equipment? I want lots of buttons and knobs for the money If i spend $2000 on an amp. I want buttons everywhere, not a sleek, look.

    • I’m 33 and I agree with you. I really hate the trend of having to make extra button presses on remotes because everything has to be “sleek” now. I prefer function over form. Give me a remote with dedicated HDMI input buttons over having to press input over and over again any day.

  • It is still bigger than the ps4 pro. It doesn’t fit on my ikea kalax shelf. Bah.

  • Well this smaller and lighter version will be slightly easier to carry in my wireless PSVR2 backpack!

  • What is the reasoning behind a smaller console that’s more expensive Sony?

  • Why is the BD option _so much more_ expensive in the EU (€119.99 -> $127ish) and the UK (£99.99 -> $122ish) vs US ($79.99} & Japan (¥11980 -> $80.50ish)? Not that I’ll be getting it, I’m happy with my current disc behemoth that’s under the TV, just curious as to the 50% higher option cost that isn’t there on the full console price…

  • Is the new sold separately disk drive compatible with the Fat digital only version?

  • I just bought PS5 Standard Disc edition 🤦‍♂️

  • > Disc Drive portequipped with Disc Drive

you forgot a space between Port and Equipped in the specifications of the console that includes the disc drive.

  • Nice, both new models support physical discs where as Microsoft is, according to leaked documents, aiming to remove disc support from both their upcoming Xbox Series refresh models.
