New look for PS5 console this holiday season

Smaller PS5 design comes with 1TB storage for PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition; new model provides option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to PS5 Digital Edition.

As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching. To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.

The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte. If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the U.S. at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.

A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. Prices for the PS5 Console Covers will start at 54.99 USD | 54.99 EURO | 44.99 GBP | 7,480 JPY. Additional colors will be released in the future.

We are ten days away from the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with additional games including Alan Wake 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launching shortly after. With these fantastic games coming, in addition to recent releases such as EA Sports FC 24, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, and Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s plenty for gamers to play on PS5 this holiday season.

I want to thank all of you for your continued passion and support.

  • These look great.
Have there been any updates on the new Pulses? Fingers crossed on getting the Elite and Explore by the holidays.

    • I always find it amusing that someone either expects or hopes for some kind of personalized update. If PlayStation hasn’t posted it to their blog, clearly they’re not ready to talk about it yet.

  • One thing I’m wondering about with this new model: does it still allow for M.2 drives to be added?

  • So Sony pretty much told the PS Disc Version to suck in your stomach, that is what it looks like. So they either want you to get a disc console or digital and thats it. Makes no sense at to buy a digital one and add $80 more dollars, which makes it $30 more.

  • So you all have clearly made some cost-cutting decisions here, yet those savings aren’t being passed onto the customer. How is it that it’s been 3 years since launch & we haven’t seen one permanent price cut?

Yet when PLAYSTATION 3 was 3 years old we had seen the price drop from $599 to $399.

You all really couldn’t cut the price by $20-$50 to help newcomers at this point?

    • I’m guessing because the PS6 will be atleast 599. Did the PS4 Pro get a price cut? I only remember it going on sale frequently.

    • One word. Inflation.

    • @xJVr1x I don’t recall PS4Pro ever going on sale, but it launched at the same price as the base PS4.

    • Good old launch day FAT PS3. That console was the best console Sony ever released in terms of features.

Just a bit to ambitious it was for them back in 2006. So they had to remove features afterwards because people had control over the console and Sony were starting to 😱

    • @agm4life

If inflation was the issue. Then we wouldn’t be seeing record profits from nearly every publicly traded company on Wall Street.

  • Not worth it if you already have a PS5 imo. Though if you don’t actually need to insert the disc everytime in the new Digital PS5, then I’ll definitely buy another PS5🤔

  • Wow nice can’t wait

  • This is awesome. Smaller footprint and the modular design. I’m not changing my PS5 but hopefully the modular console becomes a thing for the future PlayStation consoles.

  • So not only are you guys charging more for the digital version, you are selling the vertical stand separately. Sony is tripping.

  • The original PS5 needs a better horizontal stand, not a vertical one.

Also, do the slim models still have an internal expansion slot for a second SSD? It is not mentioned in the specs, which is worrying.

  • Disgusting. I met like how this thing in hand, leakers did true for one. Nobody wants to buy the slim version.

I prefer the original version of PS5. And PS5 Pro wasn’t been reveal yet until next year. And for PS6, they have wait for additional 8 years and because of scalpers.

It’s a huge fail for this, and hopefully it makes it more worse if PS6 will cost around $899 USD.

  • Could be clearer what the user-accessible portion of the ~175GB larger SSD is.

No mention of HDMI bandwidth improvement so have to assume above 2160p60 HDR display output there’s still chroma subsampling which unfortunately also affects games in VRR range 48-120Hz. VRR range really should be widened to 40-120Hz with full 4:4:4 chroma.

Main spec changes actually detailed are USB-A to USB-C physical swap for the front accessory charging port (480Mbps – use the other 3 ports for data drives) and an extra accessible side port under the shell for UHD Blu-ray Drive addition/removal.

Side effect of removable optical drive is relocation of Blu-ray eject button so it’s easier to differentiate the standby button without remembering or looking closely at the button labels.

But PS5’s biggest weakness is the lack of exclusive games. Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything except Astro’s PlayRoom, Demon’s Souls and a few PSVR2 games like Call of the Mountain. PS1-PS4 got stronger with age but PS5 just gets short, temporary exclusives.

  • Finally, a PS5 I can actually fit under my TV centre upstairs! Will move my launch PS5 downstairs in the living room when I get one of these. Looking forward to the flexibility this gives, the extra USB-C port at the front is a nice addition too, it probably runs a lot cooler/less power also. 😸

  • Weird not to include photos with the original models to show the difference in size.

  • Has the power consumption of the new PS5 been reduced?

  • Will my Current PS5 still work after the slim is released?

  • It’s nice to see they’re being combined, this is a good idea! Further, the stand looks really nice. The digital version being £50 cheaper than the current model is very nice too. It’s good to give consumers these options!

  • Wonder if the attachable disc drive for this will work with the pro for next year so if people who upgrade to it won’t have to rebuy it

  • i was hoping at worst it would keep price parity with the current model but never expected it to be more expensive… the extra 160GB+ you getting ain’t worth the price hike IMO

  • Man ya making me want to praise ya…. okay fine just this once; That new PS5 design looks much cleaner. Man why couldn’t ya do this with the Digital model before too?? The whole detachable disc drive. Especially when it was a struggle for others to get their hands on the PS5 Disc version so they had to settle with the Digital instead especially during the hard time we were going through.

    Good on ya 👌

    • Oh, and the 125gb increase for an extra $70? When an nvme ssd card for 1tb of space cost $50??? Sony is really going mad. Moving to xbox.

  • I feel like the pricing makes absolutely no sense.

    The separate disk drive is 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

That works out at £65.17 if purchased from the US, nearly £25 difference. I know there are imports taxes and fees, but there are for the US too!! It just feels like we are always shafted on prices!!

The disk console is $499.99 (£407.50). In the UK it’s £479.99. It’s ridiculous!

    • Well, by default you should just buy the disc edition. Duh!

    • I think the Americans have to pay added tax on that $499.99 you don’t buy it for that price, there’s added tax afterwards.

In the UK the price you see is what you pay because the tax is included in the price.

    • Inflation and the pandemic in itself has caused everything to go up and that’s when things went down hill.

  • If the drive becomes detachable (great idea), why not just sell one SKU for PS5 Slim, and the drive separately?

  • About time you unveiled this, the pictures leaked ages ago.

  • Well done, PlayStation! Too bad I already own three PS5s; otherwise, I’d get the slim model.

Guess I’ll wait for PS5 Pro sometime in 2024. 🔥

  • After 4 years, still the same performance, the same technology, only the box has been modified. Quite a disappointment after years of waiting. I’m curious how they solved the cooling when they slimmed down the console. I’m already looking forward to the first benchmarks for noise and work under load.

    • “After 4 years, still the same performance, the same technology, only the box has been modified.”

First, it hasn’t been 4 years. It hasn’t even been 3 years yet.

Also that’s… literally how Slim revisions work? They’re always the same as the old but smaller?

    • @spacerac that’s not true. The PS4 slim had better specs than the original ps4. Same with the ps3 and ps2. This is the first time that they’ve changed nothing and you don’t even get a price cut. It really is just a different shell.

    • Only difference between Slim and Base PS4 is the loss of the digital optical output and improved Wi-Fi.

  • I would really like to know if Canada is included in the initial US November rollout. Been holding out on buying a PS5, waiting for this newer Slim model ever since the leaks — but we’re officially 10 days out until Spider-Man 2 and I don’t think I could hold out any longer than November 🥲

  • Always nice to have see the slim but I don’t understand why Sony would bother having a model with disc drive when they give the option of adding a drive to the digital edition.

From a inventory management perspective it would be easier to manage a single SKU.

Guess they must have some reason I’m not thinking of.

  • well the slim version looks pretty good

  • Wow. Charging an extra $60 for the vertical stand, and an extra $ 70 for the digital version compared to its old price, with the same large blocky designfor with virtually no benefit for the consumer. Seriously sony. This console benefits no one but your shareholders and I hope your board feels ashamed for even releasing this garbage redesign…

  • Anything to stop the dbrand poopyheads from ruining your plate sales.

    • I personally would rather stick with the official plates. Which I’m really glad they went that direction. No more having to buy a whole new console to get a new look. My black PS5 looks so beautiful.

  • Would it make sense to trade my current model, for the new one?

    • Depends on the trade in deals….I’m looking at you GameStop. Will be interesting to see what they offer as I would trade in my OG disc PS5 if the difference in price is only like $50-$100 out of pocket.

    • Yes: 1TB ssd (Sarcasm)

    • “Would it make sense to trade my current model, for the new one?”

If current model is original digital, then absolutely yes. Either way, you’ll have the option to use a disc drive with either slim model.

If you have the disc one already, that’s up to you.

  • Will both of these new consoles have the ability to add an m.2 ssd for additional storage like the OG PS5’s?

  • Announcing this in a blog post, even if it’s not that big, just shows how incredibly boring Playstation has become under Jim Ryan. Thankfully his gone next year. The next person needs to clean up alot of the crap after Jimmert.

  • Would’ve been nice if they had adopted a simpler design instead of sticking with the router flaps. The pro will likely be a monstrosity as well. This is terrible.

  • This seems like a pointless waste of time and resources given the end result.

You now have a PS5 model that is all digital that is currently 50 dollars more than the current model. Which I magine will have a price drop soon to clear them out? You then have an upgrade option to get the drive which costs 80 dollars, brining the price to 530 dollars. A whole 30 dollars more than just simply buying the PS5 with the drive in the first place.

What was the point of an all digital edition if it was just to save the consumer a pidly (yes in this economy) 50 dollars. Then punish them with an 80 dollar “you made the wrong choice” tax.

Look I like the idea that the drives are swappable with a kit now. Consumers being able to easily replace these should have always been a thing, dating as far back as the PS1 as a Field Replacable Unit and especially so by time PS3 and PS4 became a thing.

I’m sorry, but I’m just not seeing the benefits of the “50 dollar” savings. I get the digital costs more to make and you subsidize with digital purchases, but this is absolutely stupid. Going to be sticking with my launch unit till the inevitable death of the digital system and I can get a slim PS5 with an optical drive as the only choice for 300 dollars. Instead of a bunch of bonkers confusing sku’s that had no business existing in the first place.

Only thing I can assume as a long time gamer of 35 years. That the 450 is just to help clear out the old digital models, once those are gone then the unit will drop to 400, possible 350 and the Optical Unit to 450. Probably around the time the PS5 Pro/Edge releases next year.

    • I used to be an unabashed optimist too. Most likely these prices are not coming down at all and the Pro, if released, will retail at $600 and above.

  • I love the innovation Sony brings to the table for the choice of the consumer. No forcing digital on us.

The separate stand is a bit bad though.

Not worth it unless you’re an avid collector or yet to have a PS5.

  • I cannot stress this enough that I hate this design. This refresh just makes it worse. Why can’t we get something similar to the PS3 Slim (NOT super slim)? I just want something that is going to fit into my entertainment center and won’t fall off the stand every time I dust the thing. WHY do I even need a stand to have a console set horizontally?!

UI is great, software so far has kept me super entertained, controller is wonderful, but whoever approved the design for this thing needs to work at an art gallery and NOT a console manufacturer.

  • Facepalming

  • At this point we may as well wait for the PS5 pro. Lol

  • Raising the price of the digital edition by $50. Why? Because it now has an extra 125GB of storage space? PS5 1TB nvme drives are $60-$70. The $50 increase is just pure greed, especially now that the vertical stand is an additional $30 purchase. PS+ price increases, pushing games to $70… Sony’s greed will be the ruination of this industry.

    • They went too deep and dug themselves into a hole when the overpaid for Bungie, so now they’re trying to compensate by raising prices of everything, including software as well as peripherals.

  • Still looks like a stupid router. Still has the same “white” cover (BLACK, please!)… No, thanks…

    • “A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver.”

You did see this part, right?

  • Will the detachable disc drive be just for the slim version or will it come to the og digital??

  • The digital edition is the way forward as it is the most convenient and with ease of use & accessibility in mind. It’s looking all good on the specs and it remains to be seen if the innards are also “aligned” better so as to avoid too much heat or fan noise. But disappointed that there are no other colour options but i suppose this will come in the next 12-24 months. Overall, i’m please but will have to wait and see with reviews, teardowns, comparisons and the obligatory price drops in the coming year.

    • “A variety of PS5 Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting in early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver.”

There will be more options shortly after launch. It’s in the post above.

  • It looks amazing!

  • Finally! I’ve been waiting for months

  • It’s amazingly good and I am glad it has a terabyte

  • Interesting. I’m a fan if the Disc Edition also accepts the blu-ray drive, so that if the disc drive dies, it could be replaced with the disc drive that fits the Digital Edition. Otherwise, I can see the allure of going digital and getting the drive separately, so that the replacement of the disc drive is easily done if it craps out down the road.

That being said, I never really understood the original Digital Edition. For me, buying the physical copies of games makes sense because I can sell them down the road and recoup some cost, and also have the option to buy used games cheaper. I feel digital locks you into the purchase and the purchase price, with no option to sell off your library and make some money back. Unless there’s something I’m missing? Please feel free to educate a casual gamer.

    • Bro, you can buy digital games in monthly flash sales as low as any physical discount down the road.

Digital is more convenient and discs today –since the PS4– are mere “DRM keys” as the original install file within the disc becomes irrelevant after multiple patches and updates (some games require a massive download and some even have nothing in the disc, needing to download everything). Games run strictly from the hard drive.

Yes, you cannot resell digital games, but for somebody like me who receives review codes from publishers, digital makes even more sense.

Sadly, as a pro-physical collector as I once was, digital will be the one and only option going forward next generation.

    • @Tikire – No you can’t buy games on flash sale as cheap as physical, stop spreading BS. Cyberpunk physical was regularly on sale for $10-$15, it’s never been below $25 digitally. I’ve seen Forspoken as low as $15 physical, hasn’t dropped below $35 digitally.

Stop advocating for the loss of ownership and consumer rights just because you think it’s more convenient.

    • @Nydius-X77 – Sure Bro, using crappy games as an example works.

Cyberpunk was almost free shortly after launch because the bad rep the game had nobody wanted to buy it. Same for Forsaken, trash games.

You could say the same for Avengers, Anthem, Gotham Knights and No Man’s Sky during its first year. I saw copies in stores as low as 1$ for some of those titles.

My point still stands, flash sales have some huge discounts and bargain bin prices for games over a year if you a patient. I’m not spreading BS. Sometimes you’l find a better deal in physical and even sooner.

If you want to keep fooling yourself believing physical games today are the same as PS3/X360 games that ran directly from the disc, then go ahead, whatever makes you sleep at night.

Today most games are incomplete beta versions needing patches to become playable eventually. Some, like I said, force you to download day one patches the size of half the install disc, or the entire game, or a second disc.

They’re just glorified DRM keys. Plus you have to get up from your couch to change discs like the animals. Sad.

And, not to brag, but personally, because of my job, I get digital courtesy press codes of almost all new games from nearly every publisher, so a Digital only console became a no-brainer this gen for me, I rarely buy for a game and, if I do, I wait for the flash sale.

      Peace.

    • @Tikire that is a lie, PS5 games all come with the game fully on the disc unless the front says “internet required.” Same with PS4 discs. FF16 for example is fully playable from start to finish on one PS5 disc. So is Sonic Frontiers, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, etc.

    • “Plus you have to get up from your couch to change discs like the animals.”

Oh no, what a nightmare. Please. It’s not a big deal. Stop being lazy.

  • Would the detachable disc drive possibility work with original generation PS5s? My day one model’s disc drive no longer works and I’d love to replace it.

  • I’m hoping the usb ports have been reworked so that they don’t melt when the console is on for multiple hours, had a really bad experience in EVO 2023 due to that happening

  • Dammit, I was expecting a significant price cut, down to at least €400, when it’s as they say “30% smaller” (which should save them money, saving which they should pass on to us!)

The full disc drive version is selling for the same €550 the price rose to a year or two ago, which was €50 more than the already too dear, €500 it sold for at launch!

I am NOT paying €550 for a nearly three year old system, with no noticeable improvements over the launch model, rather than it being a little smaller!!

I MIGHT have paid around €500 for a PS5 Pro (where is that?!), but this is another rip off!! 😯😡 .

(While PS5 games are also selling for €80 when full PS4 games are and were €60 or less!

Thankfully there’s still great stuff to play on PS4, but this is ridiculous!)
