In our June Future of Gaming digital event, we announced an array of PlayStation 5 peripherals and accessories that will be launching this holiday season. But we know that many of you were also wondering if and how existing PlayStation 4 peripherals are compatible with the next-gen system. Today, we’re happy to share a brief FAQ that will answer some of your questions. 

If you have questions that aren’t addressed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games. 
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles. 

Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.

Is the PlayStation Camera for PS4 compatible with PS5?

Yes, PlayStation Camera for PS4 will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users. More details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date. Playing supported PS VR games on PS5 will also require a DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller, depending on the game.

    DualShock 4 not working with PS5 is the last straw! It’s totally unacceptable to need to buy 3 more Dual Senses just so I can play overcooked 3 or other local multiplayer games next gen. You could easily just make it a requirement for singleplayer only games so the features get fully used while still giving us a reasonably priced option for local multiplayer.
    I’ve been a PlayStation fan since the original. I’ve played over 1000 games on the platform and have over 10K trophies but this hubris is the turning point where I think I’ll switch to Xbox.

    Is there a list of games that is backwards compatible with the ps5. Like ps1, ps2, ps3 game that can play on ps5.

      Yes for select games but most of the top games will work so no worries. Also if you get a game that has a PS5 upgrade but you bought the PS4 version physically, you will be requires to have the PS4 disk in the system while playing the PS5 upgraded version.

    This blog post if anything raises more questions than it answers.

    I don’t care about third party peripherals, I wanna know how the Sony ones are going to work. At this late stage Sony must 100% know which of their stuff will and won’t work at launch so why not just list it out. For me I specifically care about PSVR, I have the revised 2nd edition of it, I bought the bundle back including the camera and headset.

    Questions for Sony:
    * Will the new PS5 camera work with existing PSVR?
    * Will the PS5 need the existing PSVR breakout box or can it be plugged in directly to the PS5?

    Suggestion for Sony:
    * You say that to use the PS4 camera on PS5 you’ll need an adaptor and you’ll send them to PSVR owners for free. The best way to achieve this would be as soon I sign into my brand new PS5 it should prompt me for my address details to send the adaptor and send notifications when it ships. I’m sure you can tell from users PS Network accounts whether they have PSVR or not as they will have played PSVR games. You have stats on the games purchased (and I believe played) so it should be easy to do this.

      You will still require the break out box to use of vr on ps5 the new camera will work with your ps vr.
      The adapter is an option for ps vr owners that do not wish to buy the new ps camera.
      Also your suggestion to have you promted to submit your address upon start up of PS5 would cause way to many adapters to be sent out and they should do there best to sell systems at a loss instead of on adapters. I am sure they will release a new bundle for ps vr that comes with the newer camera or adapters.
      I recommend just buying that newer camera for streaming, and video creation.

    This alone just broke my interest in the PS5. Here’s the deal: I hate the Dual Sense controller for the same reason I hate the Xbox controllers. I don’t like fat controllers.
    If Microsoft can make their Xbox One controllers work with the Series X, there’s NO good reason why Sony can’t make PS4 controllers work with the PS5 other than pure GREED.
    You’re assuming developers will be taking advantage of the new functionalities of the PS5 controller. What if they don’t? Why are PS5 owners denied the ability to use their superior PS4 controllers if the new features of the PS5 controller aren’t used by the game?

    I’m not paying 500€ for a console with so many limitations, Sony.
    Sorry.
    Maybe if you change your tune with the inevitable mid-gen Slim refresh of the PS5.

    Can you confirm whether PS5 will improve the visual experience of PSVR? Will PS5 make PSVR games look better than they did in PS4? Will it make them look better than they did on PS4 Pro also?

      One! It will change the way these games are designed so yes! On newer titles, two, this system will be capable of running these existing games much smoother!

    I don’t agree with the move not to allow the Astro C40 or DualShock 4 work with PS5 titles. There is no reason these cannot be used with upcoming Call of Duty titles or any other competitive title that is not specific to PS5. For me the reason to go PS5 is so I don’t need to immediately invest in another $269 cdn pro controller. I would also like to know if they will classify games like Fortnite a PS5 title meaning it won’t work for that either? Very disappointed if this is the case and will certainly consider your competition if this is the case as I’ll have nothing to lose.

      Games are being programmed to work with the controller much more differently this new controller is going to nake for a great experience. Try it before you knock it.

      That is the biggest question by far sir! I do hope so! I have been begging them to bring vita back! Gosh just imagine a ps vita that can handle PS4 titles on its own and remote PS5, uses micro SD, and supports both 4G and 5G and includes those very data plans in ➕ PS Plus, so like standard year length ➕ PS Plus is 59.99 but then like you could pay 99.99 for ➕ PS Plus Plus and get like a monthly data cap or something plus all the current plus benefits. Also add the L2 and R2 buttons and charge only 299.99 and 199.99 for the handheld itself so basically selling at a loss which has proven to work absolutely wonderfully and brought many awesome games to great dedicated fans. Sony please please please don’t give up on handhelds I know you can do it right. Don’t get rid of touch pads please those are super cool!

    Could devs theoretically make their PS5 games compatible with DS4 controllers? This wouldn’t be necessary with single player games, but it would be handy if local multiplayer games could be played with extra DS4 controllers. Such games don’t usually take full advantage of the controllers features anyway.

    What about proper Bluetooth compatibility? I’m sick of the garbage plastic Sony uses for the $200 Platinum headset and being disconnected from the stupid Dongle at less than 6 feet away.

    Strange question really.
    I am a FIFA player manly
    On PC you can download files like icon teams and bug fixes to apply to the game.
    So download a squad file and use that squad in FIFA
    Will the PS5 let us do things like that?
    Or will this still only be do able on PC?

    Hey guys! Love you! Please hear my feedback! No matter what xbox tries to price at just price the PS5 at 499.00 I am going off U.S currency. That number is the sweet spot its attractive its reasonable and in a time like this where many of lost jobs or hours due to covid. Once again can’t wait for what next gen brings! More Kojima games! More Naughty games! Welcome new creators as well! Push the limits in gaming! I can’t wait to try that new controller as well! Its a true shame Psychonauts 2 wont be able to take advantage of that controller but I will get it on PS4.

    sorta a long shoot. I bought a sony wh-ch700n bluetooth headset to use with ps4, it could see the device but it wasent compatible. turns out it works with ps3 but for chat audio only, whould this headset work with ps5 ?

    I am very upset and confused on why you won’t let SONY licensed products like the Astro c40tr that I spent 200 dollars on at the end of the PS4 lifecycle to use later can not be used on the ps5 it is stupid that you say that you want the FuLl eXspeRienSe with the ps5 controller that just means you want us to buy new ones even if we get one when we buy your console plz change this it is dumb and I don’t want to have wasted my money
