PlayStation 5: Answering your questions on compatible PS4 peripherals & accessories

Information on DualShock 4, PS VR, officially licensed peripherals, and more.

In our June Future of Gaming digital event, we announced an array of PlayStation 5 peripherals and accessories that will be launching this holiday season. But we know that many of you were also wondering if and how existing PlayStation 4 peripherals are compatible with the next-gen system. Today, we’re happy to share a brief FAQ that will answer some of your questions.

If you have questions that aren’t addressed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.

Is the PlayStation Camera for PS4 compatible with PS5?

Yes, PlayStation Camera for PS4 will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users. More details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date. Playing supported PS VR games on PS5 will also require a DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller, depending on the game.

And that’s it! We’ll continue to provide updates on PlayStation 5 down the road, so make sure to check back soon.

  • You should allow PS4 controllers to be used for appropriate 4-player games imho. Most people can’t get four players together regularly, so not many people are going to pay for four PS5 controllers just for that occasional use. Allowing alternate controllers for party games would allow for higher sales of party games. Consumers benefit, devs benefit, Sony benefits.

    • There are no 4 player party games for PS5 currently announced; therefore any such games will be PS4 games. The blog post states that PS4 controllers can be used on PS5 to play PS4 games – so they do support what you want.

  • Will the back button attachment work on the dualsense controller?

  • ps4 games bought on a disc, will you be able to redownload those games for no extra cost on ps5 seen as you already have saved data, or will you need to pay for them again? For example, I have red dead 2 on disc, if I buy the digital ps5, will I have to buy it again or be able to easily redownload it?

  • What about scuf controllers for PS4? Will they be same deal as DS4 and only be compatible with PS4 games?

  • Will ps5 come along with all accesories?
Or we need to buy it?

  • And the 3dRudder (foot-powered motion controller) ?

  • Presuming that my SteelSeries Arctis 7 headphones are compatible with the PS5 (they’re USB) can I also presume that I’ll get the full benefit of the new 3D audio without having to buy new headphones?

  • Is the processor unit required to connect the PSVR on PS5?

  • Noooo Sony, this isn’t a good move, the dualshock 4 had to be completely compatible, at the most you had to write it as on the Now, that when you use pads that are not the DS4, you may not have the complete experience, but removing the compatibility with ps5 games is a really poorly thought out move .. .

  • Some PS VR games require a controller, but not the Move or Aim. Example:

    Eve: Valkyrie
    Rigs
    Resident Evil 7
    Battlezone
    WipeOut

Will these function normally with a DuelSense controller, or will I need to use a DS4?

  • Will there be a dualsense controller pro? With back buttons, triggerstops etc?

  • Is ps4 back button attachment capable with dualsense controller and will it work with ds4 with supported ps4 games on ps5?

  • Are my (already bought) ps4 games going to roll over onto my ps5?

If not then are y’all going to keep the servers up for ps4 so that I don’t lose the games I have bought but don’t have downloaded

  • will the logitech g29 steering wheel work on PS5?

  • You are getting really anticonsumer now, sony. I’m sure only one or two game will support those “features” of new controller like it happened with ds4, but you want to make consumers buy new controllers.

  • Do we know if you’ll be able to play PS4 games on ps5 with the Dualsense?

  • Will ps4 games also work for ps5 and will you need the disc based ps5 or digital ps5

  • What if the developer deploys a patch for the selected PS4 game, so it starts using the new capabilities of the DualSense. Will the DualShock stop working on said game?

  • will third party blue tooth audio devices work with ps5?
i mean its 2020 why should we buy officially licensed audio devices for a better, smarter and more powerfull device that can do anything?

  • Hi, what about a PS4-formatted external HDD..??

  • Will Ps4 external hard drives be compatible with Ps5?

    • I believe they already said they were, but will only work for PS4 Games. You cannot install a ps5 game onto it. You will also lose any added speed benefits as well.

  • So will I be able to play PS4 games that work on ps5 with a dual sense or will I have to keep a ds4 to play this.

  • Will we be able to use our current playstation live subscriptions on the ps5 or will we have to make new ones?

  • Steel series arctis pro wireless?

  • PlayStation 5 should be backwards compatible with PlayStation 1 2 and 3 to

  • No sense for DualSense exclusivity on ALL titles.
    1) It would be really nice if you allowed DEVELOPERS the CHOICE to allow DS4 on PS5 games. There are plenty of simple indie and multiplayer games that won’t take advantage of the Dual Sense features and this is a real shame. Similar games to Fall Guys, Overcooked and Towerfall. It would be nice to have the option to play 4 player couch co-op without forking out hundreds of notes…. No wonder you dropped “For the players” :-(

    Hard drives:
    2) What about External hard drives. Can we just unplug the one from the PS4 and plug it straight into the PS5? Will installed PS4 games carry across if on the same PSN account? or do they need to be formatted and redownloaded?
    3) PS5 has USB 3.2 will this allow faster transfer and loading times than on PS4 external with USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0)?

  • Does the ps 5 workmwith blue tooth, in particular with Sony xm1000 headphones. I ask because me Sony PS4 doesn’t work with my very expensive xm1000 headphones. And I don’t see why I’d want any other headphones when I bought what I consider the best.

  • When will we get more details on backwards compatibility. I noticed “Supported” PS4 games was mentioned. Will Supported PS4 games get enhancements like Xbox chose to do with a few Xbox 360 titles and supposedly will do to Xbox One titles booting to 4K? Lots of people have huge backlogs of games and 1080p isn’t cutting it on a 4k TV anymore.

  • What do you mean by PS5 Games?

-When the game Cover says PS5?

Since games like Assasins Creed will be released for PC and Xbox aswell, maybe even PS4, which doesnt really make it a “PS5” game

    -Whent its a PS5 exclusive?

Games like Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and others, which are only playable on the PS5

Would be really helpful to know <3

  • Will playstation 5 be able to run pass playstation disks or will it only play digital.

  • The built in Mic is nice however what really matters is the haptic feedback triggers and unless Sony’s going to step up and offer an elite/scuff with 4 extra haptic feedback triggers on the back it’s irrelevant to me as I’ve already gone beyond plus ultra designed both extreme default and true southpaw both required the extra 4 buttons and neither used the l2-r2 as zoom or fire what i was able to achieve is not having to ever take my thumbs off my thumb sticks to press any face buttons or shoulder buttons so returning to a simplified stock pad is going backwards and I’m not willing to do that!

Remember 4 haptic feedback triggers on the back and I’m good

Also gamers should be able to upload their own custom made controls for other gamers to buy on the new PlayStation store and after each download the creators should be paid in their checking account.

  • I’ve been wondering about external hard drives. Specifically, I have a 4TB Drive that I use to store a plethora of games and play them using the USB 3.0.

If I plug said drive into the PS5, what would happen to those games? Would it need reformatting for PS5 and so erase them all? Initially I was hoping they’d be playable on PS5 this way but I’m guessing backwards compatibility won’t work that way, if rumours I’ve heard end up being true.

  • Ps4 headsets wired pugs in a ps5 controller?

  • Will PS4 controller back button attachment work on PS5?
I want to buy it, but if ps5 is out in a few months then its not worth it

  • Ill rephrase – will it work on the new ps5 controller and ps5 games?

  • Hi I have the Astro a40tr headset with amp.will that work on ps5.thanks

  • What about backbuttons? Is someone at sony even reading these?

  • And the 3D rudder?

  • Hello guys, my question is:
For Thrustmaster Bluetooth Led Display will works with the PS5 Games? It’s a limited but great hardware! Thanks

  • What about the Dualsense? Will it work on PS4?

  • The Fighting Games have the biggest issue here. I have a question for that.

Just imagine the offline tournaments (NOT the online, aka ESL) and having to play any fighting game (Blazblue series, Guilty Gears series, Samurai Shodown series, etc), and the players gather there with their fightsticks, hitboxes, mixboxes, pads, and unique controllers, like a steering wheel. In PS4 everyone could connect their stuff through the two USB A ports the PS4 had. Now… PS5 has only one USB A and one USB C. The pads aside, the rest would need two USB A ports to connect their WIRED stuff. We play them exclusively and obligatory WIRED to have LESS input lag, as it’s crucial to react at what’s going on within the monitor.

So here’s this question for this glaring issue:

Why is it only ONE USB A port?

And there’s another question following this:

Assuming you guys know that a second USB A port exists, then WHERE is it?

The offline tournaments are risking themselves to the point of being officially cancelled, because we don’t want to pay more for an additional peripheral, such as a USB Hub, because there’s a risk that these peripherals, such as USB Hubs and Brooks, having connection issues.

PS5 is fine for the rest of the game styles, such as FPS, strategy, action/adventures, etc. Just NOT for the fighting games. Please, answer this, because everyone (from the casuals till the pros) who play the FGs are baffled of that flaw that PS5 has.

  • So I am guessing the nacon unlimited won’t be compatible with ps5????
If so why didn’t some tell.us sooner a lot of us have spent a lot of money on this controller!!

  • Hmm let’s see. Only certain disk based PS4 games will be backwards compatible and you can’t use the dual shock 4 controller on the ps5 except for PS4 games. After 12 years I’m not buying into this BS anymore. Not when I can play most Xbox games disk or digital and use my Xbox one controllers on the series X. It’s been a good run. So long PlayStation

  • Is it tomorrow event will announce ps5 price?

  • Will i be able to download ps5 games onto my external hard drive?

  • So, will the Astro c40 controller or Scuf controllers still work with Fortnite on the PS5 since Fortnite is supported on PS4? That is the only game I use third part controllers for so I can have the two extra paddles on the back of the controller. If it still will work for Fortnite for the PS5, will I still get the 120fps, or would I essentially only be able to use this controller for the 60fps version (PS4 version) of Fortnite even though I am on the PS5? Honest question as I am not really tech-savvy to that extent.

It doesn’t seem that Sony offers any controller for the ps5 with back paddles or that the back button attachment for the DS4 will work with the dualsense controller as they are different shapes than the DS4. That is a big negative in my book. I want the increase from 60fps to 120 fps the PS5 offers, but losing the ability to have back paddles is a huge negative for me personally.

  • Will de Astro c40 control be compatible with ps5 console and games?

  • Hi. Question. Ps3’s moves works on ps4.
    In ps5 too?
    Thanks.

  • What about the PS4 Back-button controller? Will it be compatible with PS5 controller?

  • Please reconsider DS4 compatibility for newer games. Many party games will not take full advantage of newer dualsense features. Even so Naughty Dog has proven robust accessibility options are viable and hugely appreciated.
