PlayStation 5: Answering your questions on compatible PS4 peripherals & accessories

Information on DualShock 4, PS VR, officially licensed peripherals, and more.

In our June Future of Gaming digital event, we announced an array of PlayStation 5 peripherals and accessories that will be launching this holiday season. But we know that many of you were also wondering if and how existing PlayStation 4 peripherals are compatible with the next-gen system. Today, we’re happy to share a brief FAQ that will answer some of your questions.

If you have questions that aren’t addressed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.

Is the PlayStation Camera for PS4 compatible with PS5?

Yes, PlayStation Camera for PS4 will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users. More details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date. Playing supported PS VR games on PS5 will also require a DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller, depending on the game.

And that’s it! We’ll continue to provide updates on PlayStation 5 down the road, so make sure to check back soon.

  • Will the logitech g29 work in the ps5?

  • PS4 controllers not functioning at all with PS5 games just because you say so is infuriating!

    • the ps5 games will be using the ps5 controller features that the ps4 dual shock does not have, hence, ps4 controller not compatible with ps5 games. Its due to game design not because they say so. Be greatful that you can use the ps4 controller for backwards compatible ps4 games.

    • So you’re going to buy a brand new console which comes with a brand new more advanced controller in the box and then not use it?

  • Will the logitech g29 racing wheel work with the ps5 ?

  • Will wired headsets wort such as the astros 3rd party sets.

  • Will you be able to play PSVR with the new PS5 camera?

  • Will Bluetooth audio be supported for our superior Sony earphones?

  • Can I use psvr

  • Will you be able to play games from the PS1, 2, 3, and 4 on the PS5?

  • I recently got a Scuf infinity controller, will this work on certain games? Ie PS4 games? Thanks

  • Will my extended storage work with it?

  • Any news regarding Bluetooth Headsets? Or is that function gonna be blocked like on the PS4?

  • If you buy games on the PS4 will you be able to have those games on the ps5

  • Glad i don’t have to buy a new racing wheel!

  • I heard the controllers will charge wirelessly. If so, thats great. If not, please don’t tell me it will be those flimsy, easily breakable micro USB connectors??

  • Will a Seagate Game Drive (4TB external storage) work on PS5? Currently works on my PS4.

  • No these are not the questions we want to know.

What’s the price and release date?

  • So does this mean my current PS VR will Be compatible on the ps5?

  • The compatibility of officially licensed arcade sticks is great news for fighting game players like myself, but it doesn’t mean much if there are only two USB ports on the system. Yes, a USB-C hub with multiple USB-A ports would work but that adds complexity when transporting a setup (console and monitor) to a local venue. When are you going to reveal the connectivity on the back?

  • Will Ps5 finally have Bluetooth for audio devices?

  • Will there be buttons pack to add paddles to the PS5 controller?

  • what about PS Move Motion Controllers game like next LBP or Dreams (if is compatible on PS5)

  • Will the ps5 act as a ps4 pro for ps4 games?

  • What about external HDD’s? I’ve got a 2TB that has a few games on it, and I know that the drive is formatted for the PS4, but will those games be able to be played on the PS5?

  • Not SUPER important, but will the PS4 Universal Remote made by PDP work with the PS5? I really like that remote, especially when they fixed the sound override function.

  • The back button is interesting.

  • Will gta and rainbow six seige be able to transfer over to ps5

  • But will ps camera that’s on PS4 work for facecam on ps5 when streaming from ps5

  • This is ridiculous. Stop breaking backwards-compatibility as set forth by the USB and Bluetooth working groups.
Every time a new console releases you want to play this game with what peripherals will work and we end up sending more
hardware to the landfill. Fighting gamers always get the short end of the stick because you want us to buy new fight sticks.

End this nonsense Sony. It’s been going on for far too long. We should be making you buy back any controllers that won’t work at full price.

    • All of your accessories will work perfectly fine on the console you bought them for. 🤷🏾

    • @YouFromTheFuture
Yes peripherals will work for the console you bought them for but DS4 and third party controllers will only work with PS4 games on PS5. This is a choice forced on us by Sony to force us to ‘experience’ haptic feedback. This is purely a money grab to sell more controllers. The vast majority of games I play are multiplayer and will disable haptic feedback on those titles. I want to use my old ‘controllers on the newt titles and there is no good reason why I should not be able to except that Sony is trying to tell me that it’s in my best interest to use a duelsense instead of a DualShock when actually it is in Sony’s best interest.

  • This is absolutely ridiculous!!! But I guess Sony is the least consumer-friendly of the Big 3 gaming companies these days. They want us to buy all new controllers for what reason?! For trigger tension which should be an optional feature to turn off anyway? What a joke.

  • “[[A]nd supported PS4 games.” So in other words, forget full PS4 backwards compatibility. Sony has gone all in on hating its own consumers.

    • since when does the PS4 is fully backwards compatible with PS3 when it came out? What about the ps3 fully compatible with the ps2? Its called a marketing move. Be greatful that they are allowing a backwards compatibility on the most popular games. If it is fully backwards compatible, in which I would also love, then they will not sell the remaining PS4 consoles that at left in retail for sale.

    • @ downstormaf – Be greatful?…what is wrong with you with be greatful about this and that?…you want us to be greatful about anti-consumer practices?…you can be alone. The minimal requirement of a next-gen PS should be to have full BC with all the previous PS but hey it’s too tech complicated and all that mumbo jumbo lol. They dont do it only because they wanna make profit on top of it and PS5 not having full BC is a total bs.

  • Just wondering, what about PS remote play for PS5 on PC? I know due to the hype, i wont need it but i frequently use it on the PS4 these days.

  • With more and more games coming out with full crossplay between pc and all the consoles, are there any plans to have full mouse and kb support on ps5?

  • What about backwards compatible for ps4 games will their be available day 1. Cause I have couple games I haven’t played but would want to be playing them on the PS5.

  • I wanna know,is ma Pulse Elite headset gonna work on the PS5?…bought it on the PS3 days and it’s still going strong and the way I hear is that the Gold and Platinum are stomped by the Pulse Elite, not something I know for sure though but anyway would be nice to know. It’s originally a PS3 accessory so since it wasn’t mentioned here…

  • Yes, PS5 will support PSVR and accessories via backwards compatibility. THE REAL QUESTION IS: Will the PS5 suppport PSVR natively? That is to say will PS5 (be able to) ENHANCE PS4-VR titles, above the level of PS4Pro, either via patch or automatically. And more importantly, will there be PS5-exclusive VR games for the current PSVR? I believe Yes, but official confirmation would be nice (though I believe VR content was already shown at the PS5 event).

I imagine my questions/prayers, at least in part, will be answered in this upcoming State Of Play.

  • Will the Astro a50 controller and the Astro headsets (optical input) be compatible with the ps5?

  • Is there going to be clarification on what the DualSense itself supports?
I’d like to be able to use a single controller for both PS4 and PS5 games. Not supporting the Dual Shock 4 with PS5 games is less of an issue than the other way around.

  • Is the new DualSense controller going to work on the PS4?

  • PlayStation 5 should be backwards compatible with PlayStation 1 2 and 3

  • All games on ps5 well released on Sony interactive entertainment of revolution

  • I get making 1st party devs utilize the dualsense but couldn’t you let 3rd party devs decide whether or not to support the dualshock 4 controller?

    • C’est passé à côté de la ps5 faire ça c’est l’une des forces de cet ps5 donc il ne peuvent pas faire ça, ça gâcherait tellement l’immersion.

  • Hi, just wondering if the new duel sense controller will work with PS4 games on the ps5 system?

I imagine it will, but just confirming.

  • Just want to have a chance to pre order my own PS5 on the Playstation Store. Dont want to miss my chance. I’m so hyped! Happy gaming to all of you.

  • How will backwards compatibility really work? Like on the standard edition for ps5 will it support previous gen, PS1 to PS4? And how will it work on the digital edition?

  • Will there be a new $ingstar for PS5 and can we have a permanent, irremovable $ingstar icon on the user interface like we had on the PS3 XMB please?

  • It’s ridiculous that DS4 or third party controllers won’t work on PS5 titles. I don’t give a rats about haptic feedback in multiplayer games. I’ve even removed the rumble motors from one of my DS4 controllers. Also invested in expensive controllers with back buttons which are now useless. I should be able to choose if I want haptic feedback or not. I’d only use it in single player games. I’m sure there will be options n game to turn off these features so it makes no sense to disable DS4 support in PS5 games. Sony can eat a bag of *****.

  • Bonjour,

  • With wireless headsets, does that mean we could get Bluetooth support so I can connect my console to my home theater wirelessly?
