PlayStation 5: Answering your questions on compatible PS4 peripherals & accessories

Information on DualShock 4, PS VR, officially licensed peripherals, and more.

In our June Future of Gaming digital event, we announced an array of PlayStation 5 peripherals and accessories that will be launching this holiday season. But we know that many of you were also wondering if and how existing PlayStation 4 peripherals are compatible with the next-gen system. Today, we’re happy to share a brief FAQ that will answer some of your questions.

If you have questions that aren’t addressed, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.

Is the PlayStation Camera for PS4 compatible with PS5?

Yes, PlayStation Camera for PS4 will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games. It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users. More details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date. Playing supported PS VR games on PS5 will also require a DualShock 4 wireless controller or PlayStation Move controller, depending on the game.

And that’s it! We’ll continue to provide updates on PlayStation 5 down the road, so make sure to check back soon.

  • Is the back button attachement will work with DualSense?

  • can i use the astro c40 tr controller ?

  • Wow headset companion app not compatible??? The only reason to buy these headsets RIP.

  • If a game purchased on PS4 gets a free PS5 upgrade with Dualsense features, will that mean the game can no longer be played with a Dualshock 4 controller on PS5?

  • Will you be able to use the remote play app (or an updated or new version) to play PS5 remotely like PS4?

  • So, are PSVR games being considered as their own, cross-console “generation”? Based on the way they are described here, it sounds less like they are “PS4 games playable on PS5” and just “PSVR games.”

    • I think that that is a good way to look at it, yes. Because the expectation is that new PSVR hardware is still some time away from being launched. However, I do expect PS5 to offer some PSVR titles that are exclusive. Titles that continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible on PSVR. Titles that can’t run on PS4 or PS4 Pro.

  • Why was the backbutton attachment made for the PS4 controller if there isn’t an equivalent on PS5… i got so used to it…

  • Will we be able to play battle Royale games on ps4 with ps5 players too sence this is the first time we have battle Royale games

  • Hi!
PlayStation 5 will support 2k resolution?

    • It was stated a while ago that it’ll support the newest 8k TVs (that only Jeff Bezos can afford by the way), anyway, 4k is supported I’d imagine by proxy. There’s still a healthy portion of the gaming community that still doesn’t game on 4k as it is.

  • Can ps4 games play on ps5???.
    And also how much price??

    • The PS5 is backwards compatible, so yes you can and some of those will support the Dualshock 4 controllers.

No word on price. Retailers are speculating £449.99, but no official word yet, I’d love it to be a little lower.

  • Will the back button attachment work on the ps5 controller?

  • Can ps4 games play on ps5?
And also how much Price on both??

  • I recently bought an arcade stick from victrix pro, is that compatible?

  • Great that the PS4 controller still works for PS4 games, though I’m sad it won’t work for PS5 games… I’m very worried about the adaptive triggers on the Dual sense. Looks extremely annoying to the point it might make the muscles in my under arms hurt. Sincerely hope we can put that resistance off altogether or can use a PS4 controller after all.

  • How about the line up of Astro products such as the A50 headset & C40 Controller?

Will the PS5 feature an optical audio output on the consoles I/O?

    • This is something I am wondering. I hope they’re including an Optical Out.
Them not mentioning it has me a little worried.

    • I am expecting it given the focus on better audio for next gen. However, a confirmation needs to be made by Sony.

    • Let me correct myself.

We know optical cables cannot carry 3D audio and while Sony is pushing 3D audio millions of people use optical cables for their surround sound systems!

  • I wish PS5 would let games from ps2 play on there because there used to be a civil war game on ps2 i loved until my ps2 broke

  • I didn’t see my question asked, and it wasn’t addressed in the FAQ…

In general, can I use my PS3 *specialty* controllers to play PS4 games (via BC) and/or PS5 games on the new console if those PS3 controllers work on the PS4? Specifically, two items:

    – My PS3 Mad Catz Arcade Fightstick KE works fine in something like Tekken 7 on the PS4. The game recognizes it and gives me a warning note that some of the button features can’t be accessed (like the Home and no Share button support). Other than that, it works perfectly on the PS4 playing it.

    – My PS3 Logitech DFGT works fine in something like Gran Turismo Sport on the PS4 once I connect it to the DriveHub Racing Wheel Converter peripheral. Even rumble works with no problem.

Will these items work on the PS5 with either PS4 BC games and/or PS5 games? Thank you.

  • Will there be a dualsense pro controller witchth back buttons an trigger stops etc?
Or will there be backbutton attachement like the ps4 controller?

  • will back button support on ps5?

  • Will the ps4 games will be compatible with the ps5

  • Logitech G27 is not supported on PS4. What about PS5? Can a man dream about this compability?

  • Can games with local multiplayer allow players 2-4 to use dualshock 4s on a PS5 game?

  • QUESTION: Will the new PS5 camera work with existing PSVR hardware? Will it provide any benefit over using a PS4 camera w/ adaptor?

  • Will there be any error codes
And will we our games be licensed to our ps5 so we don’t have to preorder the same dlc
    E.g destiny2

  • Will ps5 controller work with ps4 games?

  • I seriously hope they haven’t ditched the Optical Out. I have 3 headsets and all use it.
Pretty sure most major third-party decent headsets with a DAC use them.

Razer, Steelseries, Turtle Beach, Astros and Logitech to name a few.

  • Would the PS5 be powerful enough to run VR games that are maybe too much for the PS4? (Boneworks)

  • Could you please comment on whether there will be an DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port?

I am sure many would like to know this since the back of the PS5 was not shown.

  • Could you confirm how many USB ports are on the front /back?

Will the DualShock 4 back button attachment be supported on the Dual Sense or is it shaped too differently for that?

  • Please tell us if the breakout box will still be required for PSVR, or the PS5 has built in output for the headset (I assume a connector adapter will be required but will be supplied for free as well)

  • Will PS4 compatible external hard drives continue to work on PS5?

    • Yes, it’s the recommended way to play PS4 games, but you cannot save PS5 games to it to play them off of it.

  • Hi,
I was looking into buying the astro A50 for my ps4, but would that work on the ps5 i wanna save the money if I’m going to be doing that if it won’t work thank you :)

  • What about discs for PS4 like GTA V for say?

  • PSVR?!?!?!

  • Will other wireless headphones and earphones work on the PS5?

  • I know not all ps4 games will be available for ps5, but am worried about the ps4 games that are on the PLAYSTATION HITS list, those are my favorites games. Will they be available for ps5 at launch or sometime.

    • As far as they’ve said so far. All exclusives will be launch titles for BC and they plan to have pretty much every title available by the end of the first year.

How much of that is true or not, remains to be seen. I mean they’d be silly to not have The Last of Us or Uncharted etc etc as day one titles.

  • Genuinely concerned about Rock Band gear and backwards compat with that

  • So now I have to wait for third parties to release new controllers again, just so I can have access to the extra buttons. If I had to choose one or the other, I’d much rather just be able to use my existing pad. Who knows when Sony will get around to licensing PS5 controllers.

  • While I definitely would have no problem having to use a PS5 controller to get full experience of the new single player, open world games, etc. I mainly play FPS like CoD. Not being able to use my SEXY battle beaver controller to play on the PS5 is a big no for me. Rather than dropping 1.1k+ on the PS5 plus a new battle beaver I will just switch to PC full time. No thanks on that.

  • And what about backwards compatible? Will we be able to purchase old PS3 games and play them on the PS5?

    • PS4 are the only confirmed Backwards Compatible games at the moment.

Although, if enough of us ask, we may get PS3 games, probably they’ll do it like PS4 now though, paying for them through to PSN store.

  • Will the Back Button Attachment work with the DualSense?

  • What about the back button attachment? The one made by Sony earlier this year?

I’ve gotten so used to it, would like to not have to go without at this point.

  • What is a PS5 game? Are PS4 games which get a PS5 patch a PS5 game?

Is a game like Destiny 2 that will get a PS5 upgrade/patch a PS5 game or does it still count as a PS4 game?

Because I fully understand Sony wanting to get developers to use the new features I highly doubt that many of the PS5 patches we are going to see will use them as well.
Sure, some might, but I feel that the ones that do not should be able to still use the DS4.

I have bought several Scuf controllers, I use those paddles a heck of a lot, the DS5 has no back paddles and there’s also no new 3rd party controllers announced, nor is there an add-on announced by Sony to add those buttons/paddles. I am hoping quite a few PS4 games I still play regularly now will get a PS5 patch but if that means I will be gimped all of a sudden I won’t be too happy :(

Please, please relax the rules for PS4 games that are getting PS5 patches!

    • If you get an PS5 upgrade when you buy an PS4 game, it’ll be an PS5 version. I doubt they’ll block you from playing the PS4 version too. I don’t get what rules they’re supposed to be relaxing…

As for the controllers, contact the manufacturer. They can tell you if it works with PS5 or just PS5 backward compatibilty.

  • OK, OK. Can I use DualSense on PS4 wirelessly or wired at all?

  • Are the controllers heavily reliant on controller software (most of the functions are used with the software including covering faults the controller may have such as a wireless controller input detection sensitivity error by that I mean the software error that allows characters to move without being near the controller which ps4 controllers have that issue & also lacks in durability compared to the ps2 & ps3 controllers), is it heavily reliant on hardware (is very durable has less problems with buttons getting stuck, analog sticks popping out of their sockets or buttons breaking due to people pressing them too hard which is called button mashing because they are mashing the buttons) or is it something thats finally balanced between hardware & software so that the controller is durable, has less software & hardware based errors, has great input timing, & a longer battery life & the software & hardware are a perfect match so that its actually a balance between the 2

  • Will the Dualshock 4 be required to play ps4 games or can the dualsense be used for ps4 games as well?

    • Dualsense are used for Backward compatible games but some PS4 games on PS5 will allow you to use the DS4.

  • Will the PS5 have an optical cable port? I have a mix amp for my headset and it works through an optical cable.

  • Arcade sticks work… That’s all I need to know. That’s terrific news!

  • Will gta online on ps5 be able to play with players on the ps4 version?

  • Will the existing PS4 Scuf Gaming controllers be compatible with the PS5?
