Firmware 2.00 Video Demonstration

451 0

Hello again. To better illustrate new features in the forthcoming firmware update, we’ve created a quick video demonstration of some of the new features (shot using the PLAYSTATION Eye). Inside, you’ll see a quick run through of how Themes, the Information Board, Remote Start, and custom photo and music playlists work.

As soon as the firmware goes active, our System Software Update page will refresh to reflect all of the features found in firmware v2.00.

[…] is now live. If you’d like a video demo (for whatever reason) before clicking update, click here. Or you could just go ahead and download it. […]

  • I hate to say it but its true in game access to the XMD (atealst messages) is a must have. You have to think there are some issues with implementing it. Or they have another idea with Home? Who knows but having to quit a game to read a mess sucks.

You can always right your mess in the subject field.. :)

  • The news thing is a pretty good idea, but it is horribly implemented. Here’s why:

    1. Bright orange? Floating up in the middle of nowhere? It’s interruptive to the rest of the design. It should be subdued, part of the background, and should be set up so that if you pressed a certain button, it would stand out more and you could read more details on the current story on-screen. See this screensaver built-in to Mac OSX to get an idea of what I’m talking about:

    http://creativebits.org/ego/cb_rss_feed_in_your_screensaver

It uses RSS feeds to dynamically update and it beautifully moves all over the place in the background. And the best part is if you decide you want to see the details of each headline, you just press the corresponding key on the keyboard and it takes you to the full story in a new window in the web browser.

    2. It’s way too SHORT. News crawlers always cover the ENTIRE bottom of the screen so you can read an entire sentence at a glance. The PS3 news thing is so short it forces you to wait for each word and if you look away for just a second, you get lost and don’t know what’s going on.

By the way, Sony. Hire me. I’m an extremely passionate and intelligent gamer, and a fresh college graduate with a B.F.A. with a concentration in graphic design. You need people like me who not only actually understand your customer base, but can relate to them. I’ve owned both a PS1 and PS2 and have more than 60 games total for those 2 systems. I’m part of the G.A.P. and PS Underground. I have no experience working in the games industry but I know no person more qualified to start.

  • Even though this IS a pretty good update, (especially the custom folders and playlists) I really kind of expected more from 2.00. I mean, both PSP 2.00 and 3.00 had major improvements, (web browser (2.00) and PS3/PSN access (3.00) so why is the PS3 2.00 so small? Was it really that hard to do the custom folders and the remote start? Even if it was, why do you put priority toward developing those features ahead of something as basic as in-game messaging?
I’m not saying this isn’t a good update, but it’s much less than I expected for a x.00 update
    *hoping*FW2.10……*/hoping*

  • Over 1000 comments between the 2 blogs, most of them negative. Still not any response. So we are mushrooms, (kept in the dark and fed BS) and you are ostrich’s, (bury your head in the sand and pretend everything is OK).

  • Ok here is some more of my feedback.

    In-GAME XMB (Messaging, Music)
Each online profile has a page on a website listing games played, and other stats or information about the user
A link to the ‘PlayStation’ site under PSN Icon so i can get to it quickly (just like with the instruction manual)

Some oithers when i think of them…

  • @349; as if the iPod is an ‘open’ platform.. come on.. ask Apple for that not Sony.

  • In my opinion, ingame XMB should really be implemented ASAP, especially before christmas. You can see how much these guys want this feature!

  • @84 cloudstrife13 & trolls

Now all you trolls need to follow cloudstrife13. This guy is appreciative of the update, but at the same time he gives Sony suggestions in a clear minded way. You trolls need to understand Sony IS reading this blog and they’re doing everything they can to do what we want. Don’t make the process for them harder than it has to be. I really hate when someone tells me to do something and I’m already working on it. Drives me nuts! Seriously, if I worked at SCE I’d do something like hack into a troll’s PS3 eye toy to catch them scratching their crotch and then smelling their hand like that monkey video and put it on YouTube. Or even better, all you trolls should put out a video on YouTube and all of us can clown on how crazy you all are…..hahahah… Anyways, Sony people are better than that. They’re all smarter than us too! No one in this blog can update a PS3 to do in-game XMB…and if you think you can… go ahead be my guest. I bet it’ll take you a billion years to do. Okay well if you can… ummm go rush your butt over to Sony and I’m sure they’ll hire you -=) ahahahah…. Anwyays, all those trolls take Sony people for granted. Sony takes the blow up their arsenal from everyone and work their arses off to make everyone happy. Man I wouldn’t be surprised if SCE employees don’t have a butt by now.

Seriously I’m like psychic, before when everyone panicked and was like “Drop the PS3 prices… or I’m going to die!” I said, “Just wait, take a chill pill, costs will go down. Just be frickin patient.” And lo and behold the prices are down to $399… what a surprise! Do the same for in-game XMB…. Be patient!

So to all the SCE people I know you’re working hard, keep up the good work and keep on truckin’! You can doooOOOOOOO it!

  • I agree with 358, although I wouldn’t watch said YouTube videos, but Sony is workin’ their @$$es off to make us happy—it is glad to see a company working for the consumer and not the other way around–keep it up guys!!

  • I agree with @356 IPOD is the one quilty making us use that badly designed programto upload music to thier machines. I can’t believe in this day we are stuck using the one prorgam only..Come on Google..haha

  • @ Flanders (305)…

My thoughts exactly! I agree with everything you said.

  • Ok, my reaction last night after DL the update was harsh. Yes, of course we all want in game XMB. Yes, I hope one day to be able to enable my media server connection and stay connected to the network (this was the solution provided to me by the PS helpline; turn off media server in order to avoid getting booted offline all the time). Hopefully one day I’ll be able to use that option. But I have confidence in Sony and know they can make the majority of us happy. So, here’s to waiting for the next update! Maybe todays store update will have something great for us. How about a sale like the one recently for CAC for $5, but make Puzzle Figher $5! I picked up CAC during the $5 sale and would most CERTAINLY pick up Puzzle Fighter for $5.

  • Im getting some issues with the Information Board, everytime i go onto something like theme settings it disappears and then when i go back again, it takes 3-4 seconds to reload completly which is a bit annoying. You could make it look more appealing by having the option to make it bigger and more animated.

Also it would be cool if on it or there is a little bit on the end of the bar which shows you if there are any unread messages and how many in your inbox.

  • @JDPoZ
I agree. The GD thing is ugly; I’ve already turned it off. It also needs to be resizeable. if you’re going to put something on the screen to display information, you might consider giving the user a way to make it big enough to actually read.

  • Heheh I was just thinking about all these updates people are requesting for the PS3… in about a year people are going to want the PS3 to toast and slice their bread, make ice, and then internally grow fruit to blend and make into a smoothie, change the TV channels, order a pizza, do laundry, roomba the living room out, and of course teleport people to their desired location…. LoL!

  • To demonstrate what i think would be really helpful and cool here is a image i spent 5 mins creating:

    http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k24/whoelse_01/infobar.png

  • I’ll laugh if this happens:
FW 2.10 on ~Dec. 16, 2007 includes in-gameXMB and custom folders for games/demos/classics and custom sub-folders for videos and photos
    Impossible you say?
According to Eric, Sony desn’t really care whether it’s a x.00 or x.x0 update when adding features.

anyways, I’m glad I don’t have to wait 6 months for the next firmware update like the M$ fanboys do (or for hell to freeze over like the Nintendo boys do…….)

  • Microsoft do updates in big chunks while Sony does updates with lots of medium chunks.

  • @373 whoelse
M$ does FW updates in big chunks? Oh really? What has M$ added to the 360 that was’t there at launch?
    name ONE thing

    What has Sony added?
    -1080p DVD upscaler (360? nope)
-Wallpaper customization (forget it on 360)
-Remote Play (M$ doesn’t even HAVE a handheld gaming console.)
-ability to print photos directly from the hard drive(360? yeah right)
-constantly updated internet browser (needs work yes, but it’s still FAR better than the 360’s complete lack of one)

yeah, M$ has sure got your back covered.
“big chunks”? HA! They’ve added NOTHING

~and don’t go on about how 360 already has in-game messaging/music. its about what they are ADDING to their consoles over time, not what they already have.

on the other hand, do go ahead and talk about what they already have….Blu-ray, integrated Wi-fi, internet browser, free online community………………….

  • PS3 Firmware 2.00 update adds custom menu themes and playlists - VideoGamesBlogger

[…] * XMB means XrossMediaBar, which is the PS3’s menu. ** The blog he’s talking about is Sony’s official blog. […]

  • Umm yeah you conviently forgot the best part: STREAMING DOWNLOADS. Yes it’s in there, click play instead of Background Download.

  • no red post’s….. Hmmmm. With all of the hardcore PS3 owners asking, begging, and whining for in – game XMB, i would expect at least an explanation of what Sony has in mind. Maybe it will never come, maybe it is harder than we think, maybe existing games need to be patched to work and developers are dragging their feet. I would say we need to specify that we want custom sound tracks and in-game messaging. i do not need to browse the web or videos whilst gaming, and neither do you. If we ask for a few simple features as opposed to “In Game XMB” we may just get what we want. Also, try asking nicely. I would not respond to a bunch of whiners, just like yo9ur dad will not let you drive his car if you whine. We need to approach this realistically and it should provide a more meaningful discussion about the delays, not just finger pointing and demanding…

  • For those who haven’t messed around with the new update enough yet, CUSTOM FOLDERS FOR GAMES / VIDEOS ARE IN THIS UPDATE! Do this: Highlight something in your games list, say, Warhawk. Now hit Triangle. Go down to Information. Pick Album. Give the album a name. Now, go back to your games, hit Square twice. Your games will sort into custom folders. You’ll have one folder called Unknown will all of your games, and the one you modified should be in its own folder. Just go through each game with the steps above and you can put them into custom folders. Works the same with videos.

  • I don´t know in which point I began feeling like I was being robed.

The PS3 is an AMAZING machine. Lots and lots of potential. But none of that will matter unless you guys start showing what you can do.

I´ve seen what you can do with the Playstation Eye, the thing like Minority Report.

I mean…CAN YOU SEE HOW AWESOME THAT IS? There should be posters all over the place..videos showing how to do that..

I don´t know if you have those there. I am south america so I only watch the ads from here and other sites.

I think you don´t realize that you are struggling more than ever…and the sad part is that you are fighting against yourselfs.

Cut the mambo-jambo and tell us straight what it is going on.

You are losing what it is important. It´s not the games, it´s not the people itself…but the people who believed in you guys. I bought the PS3 when the thing was only shadows.

Well, guess what? I hope I am happier by the time Christmas hits because otherwise some other person will be using my PS3.

Take it as a nice critic.

PS. Would they take the time to read all the posts? I wonder if they talk about these things in their meetings…showing our thoughts…

If you do..oh man …we are screwed.

  • Nice PSN Logo! Just got my PS3!

  • Hey! Great update! I really like the new PSN icon. Here’s some things I would like to see in future software updates:
    1. In game custom soundtracks
    2. Album Artwork from network streamed music (make visibility larger than currently available with artwork added in XMB; preferably iTunes artwork retrieval)
    3. Easier navigation in the Playstation Store with a tabbed & 2 column interface (like Xbox Marketplace)
    4. I think that the EyeCreate Software should show up under video in the XMB
    5. For email there should be a delete all function
    6. Video chat invites shouldn’t appear as email messages…they should be simpler…like Xbox 360 chat…:)

Thanks! And keep up the good work :)

  • i just try it and its good but like the #3 said a clock can be a real good idea
and for second like every one said and i know you guy will do it :) a in game xmb :) Keep up the good work :)

  • Is anyone else having problems with remote play function? The PS3 now randomly turns off and on on its own, without the psp even being on!!! What is going on!! Symptoms are: Turns on by itself>stays on till timer shuts it down after remote play is not initiated>turns back on right after it turns itself off. I turned the feature off for now so as to not screw up the ps3, but I was really looking forward to this feature! HELP!!

  • […] PS3 Firmware update 2.0, Themes, Headlines, Playlists… Games? […]

  • I just wanted to let everyone know that AVC and AC3 cannot be put into an MP4 container.

  • soooo weird i cant go on Ps store if i put the new theme ????????? Why ? You guy dont do the adjustement ? And can you tell me why i try to connect my psp to my ps3 ( my ps3 is in stanby mode ) i got the message connexion error ???? ( i remove the theme i put every thing back to original, and stil not work )

  • …… i can close my ps3 with my psp but that it, i try to connect back and still the message connexion error ………… :(

  • No i’m happy for the Music File is much easier since a lot of us have Downloaded music from the internet, but yea we need to get those PSN arange the way we wan too.

  • how about the clock on the psp too? wen you press the Home button i see why you need one is dark at night and you play with your lights out. ok i like the new features there good and the remote play one thats a good idea so i dont have to leave my ps3 turn on all the time. and would you please let us arange the PSN downloads.

  • Please add Playlist like organization for MOVIES! Oh why did you not do this!

Please allow “Remote Start” even while the machine is “ON” I leave mine running in Folding@Home, but then “Remote Start” is useless. Also if you are remotely connected, and you drop your connection, or a movie hangs, you’re out of luck. You will not be able to reconnect. One Shot Deal. That sucks.

  • i dont know if anyone mentioned this but THE NEW CHAT ROOM IS 100 TIMES BETTER THAN B4 i like the white room advert type place your in its cool thx and the slight re-design of other things is cool the new on-screen keyboard does’nt look cheap now not a bad update after all nothin compared to the MYTHICAL 2.0 tho hehehe

    cheers good job

Plz guys work on it..I know is not that hard..And was up with the Version 1.1 blue ray profile…i thought we were gonna get that too..Plz sony step it up..I wanna see u progress…Thank

  • An updated internet browser is urgently required. The browser at the minute is far too clunky to be of much use and has other problems :

    1) Is always running out of memory

    2) Needs to be able to use all the latest plugins (Flash etc)

    3) Needs to stop prompting to be able to use cookies when you’ve already accepted it for a site and get asked on every page of that site again and again.

    4) The interface when used with a keyboard is too slow, for instance, when you type into a form box you get the popup keyboard onscreen – I understand this is useful for people who don’t have a USB/bluetooth keyboard, but why not have the option of turning this off if you DO have a keyboard ?

  • btw.. you guys complain about a stupid in-game xmb.. i’m sure xbox owners have a great flawless system.. amirite?
http://forums.xbox.com/16613506/ShowPost.aspx we are fortunate we dont deal with this S@#$..

  • 1) regarding codecs; I would like to see
    a) xvid
    b) divx
    c) .AVI
    d) .MOV

    files directly!
