Firmware 2.00 Video Demonstration

451 0

Hello again. To better illustrate new features in the forthcoming firmware update, we’ve created a quick video demonstration of some of the new features (shot using the PLAYSTATION Eye). Inside, you’ll see a quick run through of how Themes, the Information Board, Remote Start, and custom photo and music playlists work.

As soon as the firmware goes active, our System Software Update page will refresh to reflect all of the features found in firmware v2.00.

  • I can’t say anything that hasn’t already been said above. 2.0 is not the big improvment I was expecting, but its again a step in the right direction………

  • After the update I notice that some things are a little slow at times, my PS3 has also frozen a few times after the update, just while trying to do simple things like login in or checking my messages. =?

  • Sony needs to work on the ps1 and ps2 backward compatibility. Ps1 and ps2 games look horrible on the ps3. What’s wrong Sony don’t make me regret ever buying the ps3. I never thought Microsoft could do better than you and I’m the type of person that hate Xbox to a 100% but if things keep going like this people are going to start jumping to the other side and that will be a complete failure for you. Update 1.90 had a good video quality for ps2 and ps1 games but this late updates suc……. We still don’t have xmb in game. The ps3 store is so poor. And this new update was done for nothing because people don’t really care about how the background looks. After this update the ps3 feels slower, you need to release something to upgrade the internal memory or something. So much for the cell processor that cost billions of dollars and I don’t see anything good about it. I never thought I would be upset with Sony. I’m the type of person that like Playstation so much that I bought 1 ps1, 2 psp, 2 ps2 and 1 ps3 and have over 200 games including all systems. But I think I won’t be there for ps4 if it ever comes out. That if what happened to Sega doesn’t happened to Sony.

  • After all the criticism you guys have gotten over the whole in-game XMB/messaging fiasco I figured I’d take a few minutes to send a little love and tell you what I think its great about 2.0.

Themes with Theme creator is awesome an addition and a great way to personalize the system.

New Video Chat interface is easy to use and looks very cool. The video quality with the PSEYE is incredible. Photo sharing is icing on the cake.

Streaming video while it downloads changes the whole experience of downloading/viewing video. Where before I would have hesitated to download something I wasn’t already familiar with now I will download and watch most of the new video content. Great job on that. From an aesthetic point, the “play” icon looks a bit clunky where is now located. Looks like it was placed there by the programmers instead of the designer. I say this because the rest of the XMB is so elegantly designed. I also wish there was a way for the ps3 to automatically create animated icons for its videos.

Too soon to tell whether the information board is something I would actually benefit from. Clearly it’s only as good as the information disseminated from it.

Remote start turned Remote play into something far more practical. I would love to be able to access the PSEYE output remotely.

I use the browser all the time and I’m happy that its been sped up. Can’t wait for RSS feeds to be incorporated much like the PSP. I think this underrated feature has the potential to be huge and innovative. Video content downloaded automatically and displayed in your HDTV whether user created or otherwise opens up a lot of possibilities and choice for us users. Looking forward to that.

  • i always like the updates; however when or will the MAJOR DELAY/LAG when playing a song and trying to look at one’s library be fixed??

the problem seems to be related to the album thumbnail art trying to load and in turn using up all of the resources…

  • next Thursday firmware upgrade 2.01 is going to be released with in-game xmb, sorry for scaring all of you.

j/k anyways I do see your guys point on the in-game xmb, and someone posted how it was available on the prototype must mean they had issues so they can’t release till it’s fully resolved also read maybe Sony is waiting for HOME release, if this is the reason Sony is moving in the wrong direction…

I never used xbox or plnningto use xbox at all so I don’t know how their in-game stuff works so I can’t say anything on this one.

I hope sony announces more detailed information next time but for me this update wasn’t too bad, like the theme’s is pretty nice, want to know how to create custom icons. And aside from that I want to create folders for my game list…. i downloaded bunch of PS3 and PS1/PSP games and it’s getting messy… Also aside from that would be cool if you guys can support “ubuntu linux” install for linux… yellow dog is nice but I would like to see ubuntu and other OS’s.

  • After downloading the update, I played my PS3 the next day and found that the PS3 started to freeze. I had downloaded the PES 2008 demo from the european playstation store and it froze before the game even started. In addition, I recently purchased Call of Duty 4 and found that I could not play any online games. In terms of split screen, the PS3 would freeze during loading.

The Playstation 3 is a reliable console, but the freezing issues destroy the experience, please try to find an explanation for these issues since they ruin the experience.

    Thanks

  • I DON”T KNOW IF SONY KNOWS THIS, BUT THERE IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH FW 2.00 CAUSING PSX/PSONE TITLES TO RUN COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE ON THE PS3 SYSTEM. THERE NEEDS TO BE A PATCH TO FIX THIS ISSUE OR MANY PS3 OWNERS WILL BE UPSET PLAYING ANY DISK OR DOWNLOADABLE CLASSICS. HAVEN’T TRIED PS2 GAMES YET, BUT WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW ONCE IT COMES TO LIGHT.

SPEAKING OF PS2 TITLES, WHY CAN’T OTHER HDD TITLES WORK ON THE 60GB MODELS INSTEAD OF JUST FFXI! THE 80GB WORK WITH THESE TITLES, BUT NOT THE 60GB! “RESIDENT EVIL OUTBREAK” IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS ISSUE AND ALSO ANY OTHER CAPCOM OR HDD TITLE THAT SUPPORTS THIS FEATURE HAS THE SAME ISSUES. YOU CAN PLAY THE GAMES, BUT NOT INSTALL THEM ON THE HDD TO HELP LOAD TIMES. THIS UPSET ME AS A PS2 AND PS3 OWNER, SONY FIX THESE ISSUES IN A NEW PATCH TO 2.00 IMMEADIATELY!

btw.. you guys complain about a stupid in-game xmb.. i’m sure xbox owners have a great flawless system.. amirite?
http://forums.xbox.com/16613506/ShowPost.aspx we are fortunate we dont deal with this S@#$.. ”

People like you should be taken out back and shot….. Everyone listen to this guy…. the hardware department got it right over at Sony so we shouldn’t be pissed when the software department fails to listen to the consumer base.
You are a true moron…. if something doesn’t come up to scratch and you ask nicely for ages for them to take a look at it and they ignore you of course your going to be pissed.. I own a ps3…. I used to own a 360… 360’s software is 100times better than the ps3 atm… I want the ps3 to get back into the lead but if they don’t put down the foundation software wise then they wont get very far.. Something tells me you either don’t play online or have never used the in game dashboard on the 360. Being able to access your music while in game I don’t care about so much but being able to access your friends list should be mandatory.. its great being able to see when a friend comes online when your playing a game and invite them to the match your playing on the spot in a few clicks.. Having to quit the game is just retarded.. Sony failing to address this issue is retarded.. I’m starting to lose hope in them as a company as they have huge problems with the ps3 which should have been resolved by now. The ps3 started with software issues which should mean good for the consumer because these can be patched whereas the 360 has hardware issues. This really isn’t the case anymore. And well done to Sony for managing to f+ck up so badly, This should never have happened… The 360 gives off a better user experience at the moment which in turn gives the consumer a feeling of superiority over ps3 gaming. Even though as you pointed out it suffers from various hardware problems like disc scratching and red ring of death.. The software aka dashboard has sold the console .. As for the PS3, stupid things like stopping your music when you go to the playstation store or to check for an update.. the playstation store also looks horribly out of place with the xmb.. Sony have lost lots of marks from me for both use ablility and gfx design consistency. The thing that pisses me off most though is when people say well at least you don’t have to pay for it…… yes we should let the people being payed by sony to shuvle out crap to us get away with it cause its free… Sony right now is just a big f+ing mess… they are supposed to have hired people to sift through online posts and whatnot, consumer focus groups, how can they honestly say they aren’t in a mess or just ignore the consumer… its one of the two… type in firmware2.0 onto google and all you will see is in game xmb everywhere… A clear majority of people wanted it, yet it didn’t arrive…. If i dont see results soon im just gonna sell the thing and get a 360 again… oh and one last thing… how is it supposed to be a media powerhouse with a huge lack of mainstream codec support.. Sony needs to pull their heads out of there asses and people like the guy above need to get some f+ing balls and realise when they are being ripped off..
At this stage maybe it would be best for sony to fire their software department and get people who will actually work for the money they are being payed.

  • the 2.0 update has screwed up ps2 scaling for me. i was playing gran turismo 4 perfectly the day before and after the update the video is stretched just enough to make it jaggy. ps3 games look fine, but i think something got screwed with the upscaler. i was also experiencing video drop outs while playing gt4. all my video settings were the same – ps3 set to “full screen/smoothing on” and gt4 set to “16:9/1080”. ps3 hooked up hdmi to sony 40v2500. check it out on AVS forums.

  • Hello,
why Sony can’t support Flashplayer on some Internet sites…?
I thought with the 2.0 update came a new Flash that works with most of the sites…
But nothing, thats frustrating while browsing the net…
Make a small update with the newest flashplayer…

  • as the other 400+ people have stated… we only need 4 things:

    1) In Game XMB
    2) In Game Music Player
    3) In Game Friends
    4) Online Upgrade (flash would be nice)

…otherwise 2.0 is very nice and really like how u can change the themes….

  • Not a huge fan of the update, as stated in previous comments we were definitely looking for more useful options. But being that this is what we got, I have a recommendation. The information bar should be moveable…sort of like the older EA games had a song bar that you could press down L3 and then move around the screen to you favorite position. Why does it have to be in the upper right corner?!?! As well, maybe the ability to press R3 or some other button and the message on the info bar would pop up. then you don’t have to go through the XMB to read what the info is.

Looking forward to the next update and hopefuly you pay attention to what people are requesting.

    Cheers

  • @flyinb22
I’d like to think they listen, but after over 1000 posts on both the recent firmware 2.0 blogs, and no Sony representative response… I’m thinking maybe they’re just reading what they want to read, and ignoring the rest, I really despise the anti-request posts on these blogs though, the guys that tell us to shut up because Sony is this, Sony is that… giving us stuff for free… blah blah “Beggars can’t be Choosers!” lol, If I’m a beggar, than how is it that I spent 700 on a ps3, 1500 on a new tv, over 100 on PSN DLs, 500 on ps3 games, 60 on an extra controller, 15 on a memory card converter for my ps2 saves, and i’m about to spend 40-60 on ps3Eye, and another 100-200 on a wicked large hdd to shove into this thing… I think I’m far from a beggar as an individual I should have the right to complain about something that I’ve enjoyed in gaming for a decade+ now on other platforms other than Sony… I woulda’ thought own music in game would be a given this generation…. and yet still, no sony response to these threads.

  • Great update..my system now locks up multiple times per day. No content that I will use and system performance goes in the toilet..can’t wait for the next update.

  • My system workd perfect no problems one thing you should add in next update is the ability to take music right off games and save them under music in the xmb

  • im having problems with 2.00 update. it keep on crashing my ps3. xmb freezes and i cant go online because dns error. please sony fix this problem.

  • Idea for your consideration:

    7. When your deep in xmb menus (especially on media server directories) holding left should back you out of the menus to the root xmb category and stop there.

Thanks! And keep up the good work :)

  • In response to gamesblow and comment #2:
They added “albums” group content category to the game directory… you can create and album category you desire and have the content grouped…:)

  • Here’s another thing I would like to see in a future software update:

    8. On-screen keyboard should be have a option for a wheel style alphabet that would allow letter selection via the analog stick. And the directional pad when left or right is pressed a different selection “wheel” should slide to the useable position. Or even better would be a replica of the psp homebrew keyboard found here:
    http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=23876
It is known as the Danzeff OSK.

Thanks! And keep up the good work :)

  • everyone who disses sony on this update fails big time don’t you people get it there already trying to get the features that we asked for implemented but there obviously not perfected so they won’t relese them until work right so they give us something instead of nothing in update 2.0. you people sound like a bunch of [DELETED]’s your crying like girls about something thats free. and gamesblow your the biggest [DELETED] of them all your not a sony fan your one of microsofts stulies sent here to try and destory sony’s true fan community. the onesthat can truly apreciate what sony’s doing for us. i’m done your aLL A BOUNCH OF 360FANBOY LOSERS. sorry you had to see the ugly side of me sony but it really makes me mad when “supposed” sony fans act like a bunch whining little brats. sony has reached 2million users onhe playstation network something that took microsoft 5 years to do with xbox live it took us just 7 months. sony is doing a great job with the playstation network so eat a [DELETED] and SHUT THE [DELETED] UP. i love you sony please don’t listen to these losers who hate on you, you’ve done so much for the industry over the years and you deserve to be loved by true fans like me. i know you’ll get to in game messaging and extended friends list when the time is right. by the way [DELTED] microsoft and [DELETED] xbox live if you want in game xmb so much go buy a mother [DELETED] 360 and worry about the red ring of death every second of your life, do that rather then come on the playstation blog thats reserved for true fans and whine like a punk [DELETED]. ok i’m done p.s . ever since 2.0 i can’t log on to my web browser. but keep in mind that i also have over 250 bookmarks hope you fix this in your next update.thanks

  • ps keep up the good work eric lempel

  • Hope someone at sony reads this post

about the remote play, its a really cool feature, but it has lots of bugs that need sorting. The important thing i wanted to ask is, is there any functionality between remote play, and the playstation eye?. for example can you access the eye via remote play?. for instance if you wanted to check the state of your house while you were on holiday, or what your kids are upto while your away. I think that will be very useful.

  • C’mon guys you should know that in game xmb is coming it has to coincide with the realease of HOME at the latest. imo

  • 420 Samrican I am having the same DNS and system lock ups as you, Try turning off the Information Board. This seems to have helped me (knock on wood). I’m sure a patch will be on its way soon.

  • I belive the number of games or what games you can play on your 60gb playstation changes depending on what games you have i have alot of PS1s and 2s and they all work but those online one they connect but you don’t find one in there playing those games, but when we get home the problems is going to go away.

  • Wait for HOME i don’t know why everybody just get mad wen they don’t get the update with the fiture they wan, there is stuff in there that i whish they put in but i know HOME is going to fix it.

  • Sony, please sort out this really annoying problem when you change video settings (i do alot when switching between TVs in the lounge or bedroom) the theme automatically resets including wallpaper and font. The ‘Colour’ seems to stay the same though.

  • Y’know what I’d like? I’d like support for NTFS formatted HDD.

Also, with the latest news add on in 2.00, users should be given an option to pick news from which region they want to receive or else the thing is just deemed useless. It would be great to find out news from different regions.

  • useless when it comes to getting news from a different region where they bought the PS3 from when they live somewhere else

  • I have the 2.0 update and I noticed my PS3 has been locking up. The info bar has 3 circles each time it locks. To get around this, I just restarted and was able to quickly turn off the info bar. It locked 2 or 3 times and I had no locking issues prior.

    My top requested features:
    1. Flash player.
    2. Better bitstream support so my receiver can decode.
    3. Better explanation of features when delivered. When the PC media stream stuff came out it was rough trying to wade throught it all. I think writing more descriptions, and maybe some sample scenarios on the update page would be a plus.

    Keep the updates coming!

ps. On the info bar, I’d rather have a small ticker going across the bottom that can show stock quotes, gaming news, top ten online gamers for games, or whatever. Right now I have to have it off anyway, so for me I guess it’s a mute point for now.

  • Yeah I second that. The info bar seems a bit buggy right now.

I also disabled it because made my PS3 a lot slow.

I dont want my precious machine lagging :P

  • @Eric Lempel – I have an idea that I want you to hear and pass on to everyone in charge at PlayStation…

I want to see the PSeye used in a more constructive manner. I love it and I want to utilize it as much as possible. You’re probably wondering what I mean by this. I’ve seen what the eye can do with the games that use it (trials of topoq, etc.) and i base this idea from what i saw in the video demonstatrions. I want to be able to control the XMB with the eye. think Minority Report. that would be amazing if it is possible. Please tell me that you have already thought of this and are possibly working to make it happen!

    Cheers,
    Lh

  • after installing 2.00 update my PS3 keeps on crashing and everything freezes. I need to turn it off and on again to work again!!!

  • Yet, once again no fix for us 4809/1080i HD TV owners!!! I just bought a competitors HD TV for the family room due to this problem. This HD TV is not connected to my PS3. It was only $800. However, that is $800 Sony could have gotten. The HD TV my PS3 is connecte will be replaced in the next couple of months. That HD TV is going to be bigger and I will spend about $2500. Yes, due to the non-support of SONY, I will buy another competitor’s HD TV. That is a lot of money Sony is going to lose.
