PS5 price to increase in select markets due to global economic environment, including high inflation rates

New recommended retail price coming to select markets in the EMEA, APAC, and LATAM regions, plus Canada.

The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.

The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*

  • Europe
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
  • UK
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
  • Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)
  • China
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
  • Australia
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
    • PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
  • Mexico
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
    • PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
  • Canada
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99

While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.

Thank you for your continued support.

*Select markets in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM not listed above may also receive price increases. Please check with your local retailer.

  • As a PS5 owner, I find this utterly outrageous. Your communication has been an absolute show ever since the PS5 launched, mistakes after mistakes but sure, keep burning all your goodwill away. PlayStation has become cocky and complacent again, which reminds me of the gloomy PS3 days. YIKES!

  • Sony went on META wave! This just shows how greedy Sony has become under Jim Ryan leadership… let’s Nick and dime all we can…screw the Brand … Playstation name! And increase the price on Countrys were they Sony get more royalties for sale!A company that lost the touch and the way with the fans and those that support them!I hope people open there eyes and move on there’s way better place to BE than at PlayStation!Jim needs to go!

    • Jym ryan should be fired for this and all of their non sense decisions.
“Who wants to play old games”
“Focus more on live service games”
      “Series S will fail”
He doesnt even know how to use a controller hes just a greedy business man

  • This is horrible news and HORRIBLE timing.. How a price increase 2 years into a console generation..
    Definitely a weird move, smh

  • This is disgusting.

  • It seems like Sony and Jim Ryan are literally begging people to buy an Xbox or PC this generation. There is nothing but bad news from PlayStation every week. I hope this will finally be the reason that gets Jim and Herman fired.

    • So why do people keep buying PS5s at record high rates?… Clearly if they’re so bad they shouldn’t be selling well right?

      Smh

  • I’m a huge Sony fan with a PS5 and this is probably the most disrespectful thing I’ve ever seen Sony do they’re releasing countless exclusives on PC and making a ton of extra cash off of that I feel that’s plenty enough to compensate the other inflation for console sales. Even when they sold the previous consoles at a loss they kept the prices to keep it within consumer range.

    • If you’re a huge Sony fan, do you want them to be around for PS6? Then they probably need to keep heathy financials. You think some PC sales are enough to compensate on taking a loss on their primary selling item? No. Also, there’s still a heathy amount of people that are paying way more than the new rate on the secondary market, so let’s stop acting like this is some huge offense.

    • Consoles always been sold at a loss Sony sold the PS3 at about a 240 dollar loss according to Sony the digital edition of PS5 was no longer being sold as a loss as of 2021 no matter how much inflation is I kind of doubt in just 1 year they’ve reached that $240 dollar deficit.

  • Terrible decision. You already look like the greedy company and this only piles onto it. All the goodwill earned from the PS4 era is gone. Nice job!

  • You people think Sony really wanted to resort to this? This isn’t greed, this is survival. You can blame politicians for policies that caused high inflation, not Sony. US should have got a hike too, even though Americans would have cried the most about it.

  • With all due respect. What the HELL is wrong you sony, I still didn’t gets hands on PS5, neither PS4 since 2013, and if that means it will be effected through around the world, well how the US didn’t effected?! I’m so disappointed at this and also Big mistake move

  • Very disappointing.

  • Umm, can we have Shawn Layden back?

  • im glad i do have one since release, and i do believe that everyone that already wanted to buy ps5 has one right now so.. haha poor waiters

  • Oh, so this is why you guys have only been sending a lot of retailer stores like where I work at in the US the Horizon bundle. You ARE increasing the cost in the US, but just not officially.

  • Bad BAD move Sony.

  • No offense, but may I ask when will Jim Ryan leave SIE? You just give the huge opportunity to Microsoft and Xbox and are destroying what PlayStation has built quickly like consumer’s enthusiasm since PlayStation 4. Just go and check Twitter, Reddit or YouTube, your fans are yelling and become angry with great upset. I can not imagine how dumb can a leader to consider such a screw plan to hike the price of a 2 year old console which should be at a lower price. Ridiculous to hell.

  • The console you said last year is selling at a profit needs to increase in price?

    what a complete trash.

  • This is inadmissible. With this, the only thing you get is that people move away from your platform and not make people loyal. Sometimes it is better to gain brand image and take some loss.

  • Good luck with that.

  • This is an absolute enormous gorilla L.
Get your together or I’m getting a Xbox instead.

  • this is a no go ! you are not producing enough units ! you become a greedy company ! you rise the price for games and we said that’s okay you rised the price for PSN and we tolerated that , but now you rising the price for a console that is even weaker than rtx 3070 ! is too much ! hope you go bankrupt , you don’t deserve to be supported anymore

  • What a awful way to say. “Pls spend ur money somewhere else”
Sony are only increasing prices on dominant PS markets. That why u dont touch US market.
Even worse,in the ps3 era they were selling ps3 on even more loses and on an economic crisis, what did they do? Price cuts.
    This is just greed

  • Hello. I have been a Sony user for a long time. I am from Latin America so we have been profiting from inflation and overpricing for years. The problem of raising prices is that it will always be reflected in the consumer and that of raising prices being the market leader (in terms of new generation) is a blow to the consumer like me who bought 2 ps5, a series x and I am thinking of buying a third ps5 If there are supposed to be shortages of ps5, if there are speculators buying and reselling and now they are raising the price, what they will do is make it less attractive to buy. It seems somewhat anti-consumer to me. A shame.

  • Sony you lost your mind. 550€ for a game console? Get a grip or you gonna get that PS3 sales slap. 🤭 You are not untouchable.

    • LOL. I would be happy if i could find it for as low as €550 here in Croatia. They are selling it for around €800 here for disc version. And that’s before this price increase. Meanwhile, most people here don’t earn that much in a month. Thanks, Sony.

    • @Dux, I feel your pain. Here where I am, it is already selling for 550€, so with this increase it is a true PS3-era 600ish € console.

The biggest joke here is that they don’t increase the price in the US, acting like inflation is not there as well, because that’s the only one market where Microsoft is very competitive. Sony wouldn’t get away with this there lmao.

  • The cost of everything is going up and I didn’t expect gaming to be immune. Fuel (which carries these consoles around the world) has gone up quite substantially and anyone expecting companies to swallow the costs are naive.

    • I mean it seems like the competition is willing to eat the extra costs. So it is a bit surprising to say the least.

  • Yeah you guys are completely out of touch on this decision. Time will tell if it truly hurts them but this is a PR nightmare for them for sure especially if MS decides to either stay the same or lower the price of their consoles smh.

    • I agree this is potentially a long-term PR nightmare; that is unless their competition does the same.

I can’t even begin to imagine how much they’d set the MSRP of a PS5 Pro/Edge if they decide to make one.

  • 25 year fan. I am very disappointed about this decision.

    • Same here. But the situation hasn’t been like this during these 20+ years. I’ve been a PlayStation gamer since the original and to hear that PlayStation would increase the price of its console … That’s a new one.

Console MSRP has traditionally gone down years after its initial launch, and then again with a slim/super slim model.

  • WTF? It should be the other way around. You’d expect there would be a discount after being released 2 years ago. All retailers are still gonna over charge you with BS bundles.

  • I see Sony didn’t learn anything from the PS3 generation, shame shame

  • Once the markets cool down, will there be plans to reinstate or even introduce a lower price point?

  • Well I was waiting for the supply issues to end before buying one, but that ain’t happening now. I’ll focus on upgrading the PC more rapidly over the next year or two and maybe get a PS5 in the final year or two of this console generation. There’s bound to be a revised model (Slim? Pro?) at that point too.

  • I’m done with Sony. When they decided to not stock stores and allow people to horde them, I’ve got better things to do.

    • Fully agree. The hoarding by scalping scum should be punishable by jail time. These worthless, soulless slime provide zero value. Sony should focus their efforts on stopping this practice, along with other customer friendly decisions, like not raising prices now.

  • I been supporting PlayStation since 1999. This right here, is about as bad as the early PS3 days when the price was $599 USD in 2006. Now with PS5 price increasing nearly or over $100+ in other countries besides USA. It’s an slap in the face to both current and potential new PlayStation fans

  • PlayStation needs a new CEO. It’s obvious that Jimbo want to kill the brand with all the greedy decision he’s been making as of late.

  • Nice to know Arrogant Sony is back and worst than ever.

  • Common Sony L. I hope they continue to lose more exclusives so we can move on to a platform that respects their customers.

    • “Hi guys, I know you are struggling, so we as a billion dollar company, that just had an excellent financial year, decided to increase the price of our product that is already hard to get.

Please understand and thank you for your support.”

you, Jim. I have a PS5 already, but I am hoping Microsoft is going to decrease the price of their Series X and completely decimate PS5 sales.

I know it is not going to happen, but, I really hope it happens. This level of arrogance is disgusting.

    • Sorry, the above should have been a new comment instead of a reply.

  • “For the players” but you’re charging £70 a physical game, being sued for charging over the top on digital games, putting the price of the console up.

You don’t care about “the players”, you’re getting cocky again thinking you’ve “won”.

I’ve had PlayStations since the original PlayStation and I’ve never felt valued as a clearly loyal customer. I don’t believe any of us do.

  • Quest 2 price increase and now this. Wonder what’s next.

  • Well. Last time there werent any ps5 in stock to buy ftom playstation. And now they up the price of an 2 year old console.

Looks like i wont be buying a ps5.. ill be waiting for deals or ps5 pro, maybe even a ps6.
    I wont go with this

Might even switch to xbox, cheaper and more available.

Just nope. 10% increase lost a customer. Hopefully more

  • Disgusting.
Stupid and arrogant Sony is back baby! 🙄

  • Prices for goods and services are going up everywhere. It is what it is. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  • It’s like they aren’t even trying to retain or keep the playerbase this generation…Many of the decisions they’ve been making aren’t about trying to give us anything we want. Last generation they did all they could to keep us happy….Now it’s greed and half assed effort.

  • Raising the prices like games, console it’s always be the worst example for the gaming community and you should ashamed of that.

  • poor sony, you learn nothing from the ps3 era

  • So you are already way to expensife whith you psn store + now you rise consolle prices = rong desision.
Why you first party games i al wait untile bin game .
If you ask 80 euro = al included + 1 version
+ digital cheaper = no disk – no re selling – no transport …..

Nex gen = pc to miself

Stil no report buton in store where consumers ( the peopel who paying you bils + you are anti gamer again )

Dlc mistakes – rong versions – rong price tag – rong amount peopel did pay = al need to be abel to report tru store self .

  • I understand some of the decisions base don the falling Euro and changes in markets but to increase it in Canada makes no sense at all from an economic standpoint, the Canadian dollar has not dropped in the same fashion as the Euro and should be a proper adjustment based on the currency exchange rate in the USA.

The absolute disregard for the consumer is disgusting, if it was a small increase i would understand, but a $20 and $50 increase in a market where the dollar has sat at around the same point (78-80 cents on the dollar) is anti-consumer.

  • First, you increase 1dt party games from $60 to $70, now you increase the price of a console that’s damn near impossible to get? Smart move, Jimbo.

  • Where dislike buton ?

  • this some bs

  • I understand the Pound and Euro took a 20-30% beating vs the USD

The CAD not really though, still hanging around .77-.80

    • agreed, that’s exactly what i said – its blatant anti-consumerism for the Canadian market.

    • The Mexican peso is even a little bit better now that was at launch (20.31 vs 19.94). This makes no sense at all, just greed. Specially for a 2 year old console which manufacturing costs have already been reduced.
