PS5 price to increase in select markets due to global economic environment, including high inflation rates

New recommended retail price coming to select markets in the EMEA, APAC, and LATAM regions, plus Canada.

The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.

The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*

  • Europe
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
  • UK
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
  • Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)
  • China
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
  • Australia
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
    • PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
  • Mexico
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
    • PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
  • Canada
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99

While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.

Thank you for your continued support.

*Select markets in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM not listed above may also receive price increases. Please check with your local retailer.

  • Funny the inflation apparently didn’t hurt the pc’s nor nintendo nor microsoft . Only you ….

  • Sony really is speedrunning on how to lose costumers, I already have a PS5 but damn I don’t know if I’ll buy a PS6.

Price increase in games, censorship in games that other consoles don’t have, price increase in console, digital games are sold at higher price in the ps store (they are getting sued for this).

I’ve been with PlayStation since PS1 but damn every month I lose hope in this company.

  • This is very stupid. Instead of this dumb you should make Sony Direct available worldwide, stop all the censorship, and move back to Japan. Fire Jim Ryan

  • This is just greed. Games for 70, making a console more expensive almost two years after release. You guys are out of your mind. Fortunately i already have a PS5 but i still am offended by it. How to lose a lot of the good will in 1 stupid decision.

  • Jim Ryan is stupid and needs to be fired

  • Jim Ryan ports games to PC and NOW he’s increasing the price. What an idiot.

    • It devalues their own console to enforce the competition, like a BMW salesman telling you you’re better off with a Ferrari. Exclusives are great because they make Playstation the best place to play by default, because it’s the only place. You think I’d ever buy another Nintendo console if I could get their exclusives like Mario and Zelda on my primary console? It’s a questionable and highly controversial decision to say the least, that might prove profitable at first but might bite back hard. Playstation and Nintendo gamers are generally passionate about their exclusives and legacy, Xbox and PC players don’t really seem to get it in my experience (possible due to a lack of quality exclusives). I bought most my games on release at full price, especially the quality exclusives, and stopped doing so to support them fully. There are already reports of declines in game sales and they think it’s due to the pandemic ending, well guess again… I’d also like to point out that console gaming is probably the biggest financial factor driving this industry forward, and that console gaming and Mario singlehandedly revived the industry when it was in decline. So PC gamers shouldn’t gloat over this, in the end our loss could prove to be yours. This could result in less interest in new IP’s and first party titles on both consumer and publisher sides, to begin with. Not to mention the repercussions it can have on their consoles and platform in general. They might’ve gotten some PC gamers interested in their IP’s, but are pushing Playstation gamers towards PC. In a sense, they’re taking their own audience for granted.

  • You understand that there is global inflation so you decide to make your console more expensive? The PS5 was already 30 dollars more in Canada than the Series X and now you’re going to raise it another $20? So basically $50 more than the Series X. So I guess you’re not already making enough money porting your games to PC if you have to do a move like this. I thought you guys learned your lesson when the PlayStation 3 launched but clearly under Jim Ryan’s tenure we are back at square one and possibly even one step behind that with this decision to raise the price.

  • This is puuuuure greeeeed. Consoles get constant internal hardware revisions and thus manufacturing gets cheaper and cheaper. Which Sony has already done. GPU and memory prices are dropping. New manufacturing processes for chips which result in more chips per wafer. It is cheaper and cheaper to build a single PS5 unit. Reason for this price increase is good old human greed. No price increase in USA because fans would destroy you over there.

    • …..so there is most definitely still a semi-conductor shortage in regards to materials used for building chips. Go to any car dealership and ask about inventory and why they have such an extreme shortage and they will be happy to break all this down for you to understand.

And just because consumer grade desktop GPUs have begun to adjust down to their (still slightly above normal) prices really has nothing at all to do with a proprietary APU config that AMD/Sony are using in the PS5, not to mention the proprietary onboard memory controllers, the 4k UHD disc drives, etc. You didn’t lay out one single logical explanation or reason why somehow PS5s should magically be getting cheaper. Let alone at the manufacturing level to produce.

What was the point of this comment?

  • >4 exclusives
    >losing exclusives
    >70 dollar games
    >killing japan studio
    >eternal censorship
    >Go woke, get broke
    >moving to america

    >trying to shut down psn on ps3 and vita to force people to rebranding of streaming service as a game pass knock off
    >”why would people play old games?”
    >every major AAA project for the next ten years will be a live service
    >Worst selling console in company history
    >Brand lowest point in consumer goodwill its been since the launch of the PS3
    >Lifelong diehards either sticking with the ps4 or moving to switch, pc or xbox

So is Jim Ryan this incompetent or a corporate plant enacting a large scale sabotage plan?

  • Keep doing you Jim Ryan, i.e. destroying the PlayStstion brand name one week at a time.

Over 60 weeks since Rift Apart came out and not a single brand new PS5 only game since then.

  • Huh? I’m definitely not an experienced economist looking to wring as many pennies out of each market, but why is the price of a PS5 with disc drive in China & Mexico now equivalent in cost to over $700 US Dollars? PS5 is a cool system, but even with the PS3 I was advised by Sony leadership at the time to acquire a second job to afford its at-the-time eye-watering price of $599.99 USD. How would venerable leader Jim Ryan of Sony caution me now?

  • lol price increase and no exclusive anymore thanks jim ryan

    • He is truly jerk who only knows making money but not knows the reputation from fans and players. PayStation for sure. Toooooooo disappointed.

    • I hope he gets fire sooner than later.
If not well we will vote with our wallets

  • Twats! I can’t even find one to buy as they are as rare as unicorn tears but now; well, now they are now even less attractive. You may as well just change a million for it as you’ve burnt so many bridges with your mismanagement of this show.
I might actually have to go to the dark side and get a (insert any of your competitors names) or god forbid, go outside and breath that disgusting fresh air.

  • Great move greedy, you were constantly beating profit records quarter after quarter and you guys are in so tragic situation that you had to make this “difficult decision”? I can tell you that you helped many consumers to make a very easy decision not to buy your console and move over to MS. Great move. Of course US is not affected because there you struggle vs Xbox, so no “economic environment impact” there, what a surprise. Arrogant Sony is back.

  • Not unexpected. Inflation is crazy this year. My mortgage payment went up by nearly 30% in less than a year, and I’m already in a good situation on average. Food prices are like 50% up or more. 10% bump on a one-time console purchase feels fairly moderate. It’s a luxury product anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Let me extend a personal YOU to Jim Ryan, the grossly incompetent leader of this sham of a company. Your hardware is already weaker than Series X, you have ONE GAME for the platform, and you are raising prices without any improvement? What a bunch of greedy idiots.

  • you jim

  • I’m sorry guys but this generation has been rife with baffling decisions like these. What are you doing?

  • Can we get someone in charge of PlayStation that is not an embarrassment?

    • PLEASE ! Ryan and Hulst have officially killed PlayStation. From the most loved brand in gaming to the most hated in less than 3 years! WOW !

  • 🔐🔐

  • Sony & Jim ryan is this a wise move because Microsoft can lower prices of series x for more console sales fans already mad bout 70 uk pound sony studio games & since this from the top ceo where the special edition ps5 or as a die hard playstation fan I wanna official ragnarok plates for my ps5

  • Poor choice Sony adding more wood to the fire for help people to switch to Microsoft or Nintendo in Australia.

Most people in Australia will not buy a $800 console went both the other console are cheaper in price in Australia.

This may be as bad as selling the PlayStation 3 for $1000 in Australia at launch.

  • this is stupid

  • Wait let me get this straight. People who want your console and still can’t get one. And your bright idea is to increase the price here in Canada?

Whatever drugs Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst are taking get them off it. The Playstation brand is legit headed in the wrong direction.

  • Comments prove that “gamers” are still too dumb to understand what INFLATION is. The price of bread, fuel, semiconductors, gas could increase… but they still won’t understand why a console made of electronics including a STRONG RARE GPU would adjust to the thing that’s called INFLATION in the concept called ECONOMY.

    • In case you forgot. Currently the US is experiencing the worst case of inflation in recent memory. And yet Sony has not increased the price even though the US is one of the biggest markets for Sony products

Gee I wonder why. Maybe because even Sony knows that couldn’t get away with that. So they they decide to increase the price everywhere else as a consolation prize

    • Then why Xbox are not doing so? Why should we taking this? Do not be a fanboy.

    • Yet gpu prices are down

    • And you are too dumb to not understand that the manufacturing price of the same product goes down after two years of production. It’s called manufacturing optimization.

  • If inflation is the reason, is PSN+ the next to increase the price?

  • Got a ps5 but I have to agree, this is a dumb move.

These consoles already cost well over MRP because of Stock issues in many of these countries which is baffling since its already been 2 years, aside from the scalpers, official retailers have been forcing people to buy bundles in order to get ps5’s and now they are gonna cost even more. Massive L

  • There goes Sony’s market dominance this generation.

Here in Mexico Sony’s products are already sold at a premium, way more expensive than the currency exchange from the US price, and I imagine they have this pricing strategy to offset tax and other costs to operate in this country. (The PS5 currently costs USD $700 here, USD $750 with the new price). PSN is the only major digital storefront without a local pricing strategy, so we keep paying in USD for digital games. Increasing the price of the PS5 is nothing but a greedy move.

Jim Ryan seems to make one bad move after another from a consumer’s point of view, but PS’ profits are higher than ever. I believe nothing will change if us fans just keep throwing money at them.

  • No CEO pay cut? This is a disaster.

  • I understand the outburst, but technically all the retailers in my country are already scalping with 50-100 bux and force u to buy 3rd party cheap accessories and some games to add on the price. Rather have it go to Sony and fund some games/studios! Hopefully PS shows up with a showcase, much needed. They ain’t raising it in US cause the competition is neck and neck over there, is from a business perspective understandable but yeah… for the ”less fortunate” in other territories it sucks but everything is going up.

  • Wow I have a PS5 but now I’m thinking of selling it for an xbox, you guys are idiots running Sony, increasing the price after release… very anti consumer. Paying companies to not put games on game pass… how about you dont do that to save your bottom line instead of passing the cost to your consumers. You guys are greedy AF.

  • if you’re going to nickel and dime the people that are desperate to support you and desperate to play your games, Playstation better step it up with features like VRR and discord, quick resume, plan sharing on ps plus, etc. this price hike is indefensible and will absolutely hurt ps5 sales, but at the very least Sony can show a crumb of goodwill to its players by being more open to new features.

  • I already got one, still offended.
    That’s also real cheesy to me;

You can clearly see that they don’t do that price increase in US only because of XBOX Series X would be 50 bucks cheaper than PS5 then of course.

    #Corporate Greed

  • Jim, you are by far the worst thing to happen to this brand.

    • A few years ago, I would’ve disagreed and said that you were exaggerating. But now? I gotta agree. This is ridiculous

    • I knew this is gonna happen in the moment when I first saw the guy….. he is just an old greedy businessman by look.

  • “Pay has no limits!”

The first ever price increase of a console. Last year Sony said to investors that the disc version of PS5 is already profitable, so why not sell it at a slight loss?

After in recent years Sony has….
    – pushed for $70 games
    – implemented paid $10 patches
    – achieved a monopoly on their digital storefront when they stopped selling keys to third-party distributers
    – removed the browser to make sure users won’t access cloud streaming services like GeForce Now or Stadia to play non-playstation games

    “For the Payers!”

I sold my PS5 to a friend because I was unsatisfied but this price increase is just ridiculous. I hope Nintendo & Microsoft enjoy the market share that Sony proudly gives away.

  • I was thinking about FINALLY buying a next gen console this Holiday. Either PS5 or XSX. Me being from EU, Sony has literally made the decision for me.

  • This is ridiculous…You guys are increasing the RRP in countries that struggling the most, economically. Your company is worth billions and you still dare to talk about how you struggle to ship this? How much is too much for you guys? Does your greediness knows no limits?
It’s horrible to think that you guys don’t even care. But this is will turn on you. People are only stupid for so long, until they realise what you guys really are: a bunch of greedy, filthy billionaires who couldn’t care less about economic struggle as long as your pockets get full.

  • People couldn’t afford them before and they especially won’t afford them now

  • No I seriously cannot believe what a worthless piece of you have turned this brand into. PS has always been a business, but at least the most recent predecessors pretended to care about the gamer. You only give a about business. You don’t even play games. This is a shocking move that makes is a slam dunk for the competition. Especially now we can pirate your games on PC.

  • Guessing this is to help the top bosses at sony keep their huge profits after the continuing fines and lawsuits they keep encountering for ripping off customers… is the huge price increases really a good solution… rip off customers yet again!

    • It’s so they don’t take massive losses on console sales. You know, and don’t go bankrupt.

    • @sinister184 You DO know that historically every console manufacturer has taken losses on consoles sold? With the exception being Nintendo since maybe the Wii.

  • Absolutely hideous.

  • Another show of how much Sony care about its customers. Remember “It’s for the Players” or should now be “It’s for the Payers”.

Nothing but a bunch of greedy putting profits and investors before it’s customers.

  • It would have been far smarter of them to phase out the standalone consoles and only sell bundles to increase revenue rather than just increase the price. Alternatively, they could just not do a price drop in the future and make up revenue that way. Being more expensive than your closest competitor is not a good move, even more so when that competitor is using its near-limitless money to buy their way to the top of the industry you depend on.

  • The game price increases and console price increases are a disservice and fairly ridiculous. Honestly, when you guys started releasing PC games, there was nothing tying me to the platform anymore. I’m now a PC gamer and can see it’s almost like you want to chase people that way. These pricing strategies are ridiculous.

  • This era of PlayStation is just as bad as the PS3 era, which sucks to say because I’m loving the PS5 console, the games, the DualSense, etc. But PlayStation just keeps fumbling on themselves and it’s so tiring and I’m putting the blame on Jimbo. His leadership sucks and is out of touch. Can’t wait until the Jim Ryan era of PS is over and we hopefully get someone better. Bring back Shawn Layden.

    • PS3 era was good though, just a pricy console. No one was forced to pay for online, great games that were actually exclusive like Infamous, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Sly. PS5 gen has almost no redeeming factors, its just riding off the coattails of the PS4 gen which did everything differently that what they’re doing now. When that steam runs out, PS5 will be finished. Hopefully Ryan and Hulst are gone by then.

  • Wow ! A shocking announcement. Understandable, but shocking nonetheless. Hope you won’t receive too much backlash about it.

  • Let’s layout the facts

    1. The PS5 is more expensive than Series X (in some countries)
    2. PS5 first party games are $70 while a Series X first party games are $60
    3. You have to pay $10 to upgrade your PS4 first party game to a PS5 game (i.e. GT7, GOW, etc) while you get a XB1, Series X, and Windows 10 first party game for no additional fee
    4. For several third party games, you needed to buy the PS4 and PS5 versions separately while you could buy the XB1 and Series X/S version for one price (i.e. art of rally, demon turf, fuga: melodies of steel etc)
    5. For many indies, at launch, you have to pay for them on PlayStation while they are included in game pass (i.e. hades, twelve minutes, shredder’s revenge, etc)
    6. On the Xbox, you get a PC version of your game at no additional cost with your console version or with game pass but you have to make a separate purchase on PlayStation
    7. On Xbox, cloud save is free for all users, automatically backup your games, no storage limit, and saves easily sync between cloud streaming and local play. On the PlayStation, cloud save cost, there is a storage and item limit, and cloud saves and local saves are separate
    8. On Xbox, I do not have to repay for any of my X360 games that are made playable on XB1 but on the PlayStation, I have to re-pay for many of my PS3 games made playable on PS4 (i.e. resident evil director’s cut, tekken 2, super stardust portable, etc)
    9. XB1 controllers can work for all games on Series X and Series X controllers can work for all games on XB1. PS4 controllers can only work for limited games on PS5 while PS5 controllers do not work on PS4
    10. On PlayStation, I had to re-purchase several PS2 games that I bought on the PS3 on the PS4 (GTA, bully, max payne, etc but I did not have to re-purchase any OG Xbox or X360 games on the XB1

Conclusion: PlayStation is a more expensive experience than Xbox even though the former may have better exclusives than the latter.

    • Very well put. PlayStation is finished if they don’t get rid of Ryan and Hulst ASAP.

    • Yeah,it seems Sony wants to remember why they lost the ps3 era to finally learn

    • Agreed.

    • 11. On Xbox you can backup your game save files onto a fckin USB DRIVE!!! On the Playstation….guess what…. you can’t….

    • *on hte PS5 I meant.

    • I have a feeling that profit is the primary driver behind every decision regarding the PS5. Wherever they can get more money from their customers they will. They’re not even being subtle about it anymore.

As both a PS and Xbox gamer I’m becoming more and more disgusted with Sony this generation. It’s profit before customers this time around for them.

  • And a couple of days after this news story in the UK

  • Inflation is sky high in Europe, so for people interested in buying in PS5 (if available) this is bad news.
I am really curious to learn if this move will actually have a positive impact on sales/profit for Sony, it could be counter-effective.
