PS5 price to increase in select markets due to global economic environment, including high inflation rates

New recommended retail price coming to select markets in the EMEA, APAC, and LATAM regions, plus Canada.

The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing. We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.

The new RRPs below are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.*

  • Europe
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
  • UK
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
  • Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)
  • China
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
    • PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
  • Australia
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
    • PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
  • Mexico
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
    • PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
  • Canada
    • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
    • PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99

While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.

Thank you for your continued support.

*Select markets in EMEA, APAC, and LATAM not listed above may also receive price increases. Please check with your local retailer.

  • This its a HUGE mistake, 70 dollars game its already a BAD PR, and now this…. casuals and mainstream market will not embrace the ps5 like they did with ps4. It would be the first time that consoles increase the price instead of lowering. There are no way to defend this i really hope you guys reconsider for the health of Playstation Brand.

  • “Don’t be a jerk,” my ass. This is an absolute disgrace. Jim Ryan continues to be the worst boss PlayStation has ever had. Greedy and deplorable. 500 dollars is already over-priced, and on top of that you charge a ludicrous 70 bucks per game, and now you tell us because people around the world are suffering financially you’re going to… *checks notes* RAISE the price even further??

Get out of here with this nonsense. Do something worthwhile with this lackluster system like enable full backwards compatibility or something.

    • Oh, and let’s not forget the whole “charging people to use basic online services like, you know, playing and talking with friends.”

      Absolutely disgusting.

  • I’ve had my system since day 1 got Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls along with it, I’m also Canadian so prices of some PS5 titles really hurts, over $100 after taxes for for some titles, that’s a bit of an ask The price for my PS5 alone was over $700 after taxes. I’ve enjoyed my PS5, really have, But with systems being hard to come by for nearly two years, and Sony still decides to raise the price? that is just insulting

  • You hike the PS5 price but there are not enough PS5 in the market, nor you cannot control the scalper hoarding the ps5 just to profit easily from desperate consumer.
How about you fixed the ps5 supply problem first before you hike the price.?

  • And yet the Xbox Series X hasn’t increased whatsoever and is still $599 in Canada. As an owner of both systems I can confidently state that the Xbox Series X with Game Pass is unequivocally the better value for gamers even after the refreshed PlayStation Plus service. I mean it’s not even close.

Decisions like this one makes Xbox Series X look better and better all the time. Speaking of decisions, has there been a decision made by Jim Ryan that PlayStation fans actually like? Serious question. Does the man driving this company not realize all of the goodwill he’s squandered from fans in this PlayStation ecosystem?

    • He a scumbag like don mattrick

    • “Speaking of decisions, has there been a decision made by Jim Ryan that PlayStation fans actually like?”

If you want to count it,* the decision to reverse the legacy console store closures. Other than that, nothing.

*Meaning because it should have never been a problem in the first place.

  • I’m not surprised about price hike as sony PlayStation has already got don mattrick Jim Ryan as he’s not a gamer he just a incompetent 2nd hand car salesmen

Only cares about the £££££ not the customer profits before gamers

Here in UK we are in a cost of living crisis and this twonk Jim Ryan giving excuses why to increase the ps5 from £449.99 to £479.99 greed greed greed

I will continue to slate Jim Ryan as he’s just greedy waste of space just like his m8 don mattrick

    Bring back Shawn layden.

Luckily I got my ps5 2 months ago

At £450 from argos so screw you Jim Ryan

You are running PlayStation into the ground

Basically they will be gullible people who defend this price but I won’t because I’m not a mug

You are a greedy money grabbing scumbag Jim Ryan

    Bring shaun layden sony !!!

  • I guess I’ll just keep on playing on my PS4 then

  • A platform without exclusives gets even more expensive.
First raised the price of games.
Then port everything to PC, making PS5 irrelevant.
Now disrespect even more your fanbase with this.
You are a disgrace, Jim Ryan and Hulst is definitely killing PlayStation.

As this £30 extra will encourage scalpers to jack up prices to £5000 for a ps5 here in UK

    Bad move

Sony is back arrogant and greedy like the ps3 era in 2006

Thanks Jim cough don mattrick Ryan

Resign your post get shaun layden back in as ceo .

  • Sorry, but this is insane! This is such a dumb move and you will see how this will have a negative effect on your console sales. Dumb and blind.

  • You a fool for this one, Jim.

  • I’ve been calling all my local retailers every week for the last month!

The fact I now have to pay more is infuriating to be quite honest, I could have had it for less money if it was available when I first tried to get it.

So whats next? I’m going to have a hard time still finding one and before I know it the price will just increase again?

I might as well just throw my money at the scalpers.

  • It’s about time people like me saying this

    “Vote with your wallets”

Not greedy corporate greedy cough Jim don mattrick Ryan

you sony and Jim don mattrick Ryan.

  • Jim ryan are you aware you just made the x box series x cheaper now microsoft will lower the console price now because that can afford it & don’t care hardware sales ps5 should have drop in price not go up the world in a bad place after covid & cost of living bad business call sony I just saying don’t phase me have both systems already

    Vote with your wallets

you sony and Jim don mattrick Ryan

  • In start of year we sold ours after 1 year of no exclusively PS5 games and switched to series X and series s (secondary room).
We planned to come back to PS5 with VR2 release but now it doesn’t make sense.
XsX is faster, GPU is better with day 1 release and game library is bigger. Plus XSX kick ass on Digital Foundry reviews with PS5 framerate and RT effects, plus no FSR 1 or 2 on PS5. On top of all, design is ultimately ugly and repulsive.

Maybe one day we return, since we had PS+ acc since start with ton of games, but if price is not returned to normal and reduced in 1 year, then… So long PS

  • Wow no price hike in America. Yeah check my PSN id. I’ve been a playstation fan since ps1. Time to switch to Xbox. Money hungry fools. I don’t buy your excuse for greed especially when America gets excluded. Was getting a PS5 this fall. Not anymore. Goodbye!

  • stupid, Stupid, STUPID decision Sony! And very greedy! I already have my PS5 but at the moment, with the shortages AND the price hike it would be really HARD TO WANT for me to buy your console. Shameful.

  • Is this because you guys had to go and create that PlayStation Movie Studio that no one asked for? So now the VIDEOGAME players have to pay more to subsidize the movie studio run by the gaming division? Seriously, you can stop the movies and tv tv tv and just give us back $60 games and actual sequels that we want. Putting out a Days Gone movie AFTER you shot down a sequel is a slap in the face. And Twisted Metal TV show? Really? Like, when was the last TM game, 2 generations ago!? How about remaking those instead of wasting money remaking The Last of Us AGAIN. Sony makes money hand over fist and you guys have repeatedly told us the brand is not in trouble, so something like this just absolutely REEKS of pure greed!

  • Sorry, but i’m leave the boat

  • “Hi guys, I know you are struggling, so we as a billion dollar company, that just had an excellent financial year, decided to increase the price of our product that is already hard to get.

Please understand and thank you for your support.”

you, Jim. I have a PS5 already, but I am hoping Microsoft is going to decrease the price of their Series X and completely decimate PS5 sales.

I know it is not going to happen, but, I really hope it happens. This level of arrogance is disgusting.

  • Someone please tell Jim Ryan that Mark Zuckerberg’s lead is not the one to follow.

  • A price hike in general was to be expected with the pandemic, the war and now inflation ruining everything. But it feels Sony were too quick to pull such a move. Soon as inflation manifests, poof, the PS5 gets more expensive by 10%. I expected them to wait for another 6 months or so, after Christmas, before doing that. It’s not good, but it won’t affect demand for the PS5 in the least as supply is very limited. The only really bad thing with the price hike is Sony charge everyone with higher prices except the effing USA market. This isn’t the first time Sony have treated American gamers preferentially, and make us Europeans feel like we pay for Americans’ continued gaming wellfare.

    • Nothing to do with treating someone better… € is now lower than $. It’s not Sony’s fault for the European economy suffering because of Russia, the UK and everything else happening…
The PS5 is actually still probably cheaper in Europe because taxes are included in the price. Here we have to pay that on top of advertised prices. I paid $440 for my PS5 D, even if the price you see is $400.

  • So it’s ok for literally everything else from cars and gas to food and rent to increase prices, but not the PS5?
It has nothing to do with Sony, capitalism is a mess.
Xbox will announce theirs very soon.

  • 👎😕

  • Last nail in the coffin for PS5. Even though I already have a PS5, I’m still incredibly upset about this. The newer CFI-11xx model already costs less to manufacture than the launch model, digital content prices are still incedibly high, you launched the new PS Plus, so I though you wouldn’t increase the price, since it clearly is a dumb idea. Right now, competition has a clear advantage, better supply, while PS5 is more expensive and still nowhere to find. I honestly still can’t believe you did this, this is a huge disappointment for the fans.

    • While I agree with your comments, I also would think maybe the currency exchange rate might also be a contributing factor.

I still don’t have a PS5 yet and I hope to get a disc version this holiday season or get a PS5 Pro if they announce something like that later.

Your point about the newer SKU being cheaper to manufacture, digital content being expensive, the PS+ tiers being more expensive…. Those points are also valid and a bit surprising to see PlayStation deciding to increase the cost of the console. But on top of what I mentioned, I wouldn’t be surprised if another reason for the price increase is to combat the scalpers & bots? Maybe they’re testing out the price increase in those regions and if it proves effective enough, maybe they’ll do a price increase in the US too?

  • It’s understandable that due to the global supply chain shortages and chip shortages, things like consumer electronics are more expensive to manufacture and ship out to retail stores. Also, there’s still the issue with bots and scalpers buying out entire stock of PS5s. So I guess this price increase will help mitigate this issue somewhat in those regions?

Anyway, it is a bit surprising (to say the least) that your direct competition is not (as of now) raising the MSRP of their consoles yet PlayStation is doing so. This may change in the near future. But if it doesn’t, this will make PlayStation look greedy (to say the least).

While it’s nice that the US’s MSRP is staying the same (hopefully it doesn’t change) it doesn’t matter much seeing that it is still difficult to purchase a PS5. I’m hoping to be able to buy a disc version of the PS5 this holiday season. Or if a PS5 Pro is announced around then, maybe I’ll save up and get that one instead.

Also, it’s a bit weird that you guys didn’t post about this on Twitter when you guys usually post on Twitter all of the PS Blog posts.

    • In Mexico there are no PS5 scalpers, we’ve been able to readily buy the console for more than 6 months now. Also the Mexican Peso to US Dollar parity hasn’t changed since the PS5 launch

    • buddy this is the 3rd time they increasing the price. the console used to be $500. now its $750 to $850. and after this change it will possibly be 900 to 1.3k

    • Do you think a single scalper on earth is going to see a $20 price increase and go “Hmm, maybe it’s not worth it any more”?

  • Really terrible announcement. I have never before in my life seen a console price going up, not down, after launch. Sony has pushed for higher game prices and paid $10 cross-gen upgrades, and now higher console prices. Jim Ryan’s tenure is becoming inFamous at this point…

And with this, Xbox Series consoles have become cheaper and more readily available than PS5. I’d be surprised if Microsoft didn’t lower their console price just to push the stake deeper into Sony’s chest.

  • TBFH! The price increase looks really fair compared to what I could’ve been…. So For once I completely understand, you do you PlayStation, not everyone can be pleased.

  • They raise the price to almost the entire market except the American one? And they talk about inflation? It is not having blood on the face and doing that dirty trick to other users.

    • buddy new jersey has it the worst but in america they said inflation would go up by 5 to 8% it went up 50%- 80%

  • Well, as a Canadian I’m not buying one now. Already wasn’t worth the asking price, now it’s definitely overpriced.

Keep bringing your games to PC and I’ll buy them, but this decision can right off.

  • You are crazy people, horrible move. Hope you guys get a lot of backlash for this.

  • Shame on you. The only market that supports you strongly from day one since the psone days is Europe. But apparently you don’t give a…

  • It’s already too expensive.

  • So, people will have to pay more for a 2 year old console?

Guess I won’t get the VR now, as the price will surely be sky high in LATAM

  • This is uncalled for and a bad decision. Increasing the price in places like Mexico where there’s plenty of units in shelves and strong competition, and where the currency has kept its value compared to the USD is INEXCUSABLE and bad tactics.

  • you cant be serious of the ps5 price increase. its already around $750 and barley anyone can get their hands on it because of the bulk buyers. how about instead of increasing the price you sell one console per person. have a system with your name and id so bulk buying can be avoided.

  • in the USA $850 dollars takes ages to make if you got a minimum wage job. you cant eat for a month if you want to afford a ps5. 2 freaking years and Sony claim a “chip shortage” i say this is nonsense. its been two years and im still unable to get a ps5 because its already $750 to $875 just for the console with a controller.

  • I already have a PS5 but this is insanity. Price hike on a 2 year old piece of tech? Surely you’ve found cheaper manufacturing processes in two years, no? Big time L

  • For those saying “US has no increase because we already pay more with Taxes” remember than everywhere else we have to pay for importation fees. a PS5 can cost around $1000 in local currency in Latam, and now it will probably be even more expensive.

  • Greedy anti-consumer move, especially when you guys are making profit and announced it.

Also while you’re at it, make it a point to release a PlayStation plus basic, that only has online multiplayer and storage. Stop forcing people to buy PlayStation plus with a game attached to it I barely ever touch it or download it because I’m a buyer, not a free game rent/collector.

  • Disgusting that Sony are choosing to jump on the inflation bandwagon despite having no actual need to as they are making more profits than ever. This and the £70 games, Sony really is for the payers rather than the players this gen 😡 Sony may have some exclusives but Xbox and Gamepass are the best value proposition by far, they were before of course but Sony’s greed over the PS5 price just hammers home the point.

Demand is probably high enough that it won’t but I’d love to see their console and games sales nosedive over this.

    Utter move Sony.

  • Yes, because increasing the price of it during the time people can barely afford anything is a good idea😑

I’m pretty sure Sony can sell this a loss due to the fact they probably make a ton of money back with PlayStation Plus, well maybe saying Hell that’s been kind of a lackluster.

And to anyone that says this is a need because low income families don’t need this. Some people like having game consoles for entertainment, however this is good probably encourage people to buy a Switch or Xbox more.

  • Thanks Sony! I really wanted a PS5, but £449.99? And now £479.99!? No thanks.

  • I love PlayStation and that but come on guys this really ain’t it. I already got mine but please reconsider.

  • I don’t know why Jim Ryan insists on having bad PR weekly. It’s like, lay low for a while, chill a bit. He must be addicted to bad press at this point.

  • Sony is doing too many thing wrong…
And why the price change doesnt affect USA? Very convinent…

The GLOBAL economic environment its the SAME for ALL THE WORLD…
This price change should be EQUAL for everyone…

  • I guess Jimmy didn’t see the “But don’t be a jerk” message

  • I’m gonna stick with my PS4 forever then.
    Thanks to this clown Ryan.
