Since launching PlayStation Plus in 2010, SIE has been at the forefront of innovation with game subscription services. Today, we are pleased to share with you official news about changes coming to our subscription services. Benefits from Essential and Extra tiers are also included. Local pricing will vary by market.

The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, our key focus is to ensure that the hundreds of games we offer will include the best quality content that sets us apart. At launch, we plan to include titles such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. We’re working closely with our imaginative developers from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences available with a library that will be regularly refreshed. More details to come on the games we’ll have on our new PlayStation Plus service.

When the new PlayStation Plus service launches, PlayStation Now will transition into the new PlayStation Plus offering and will no longer be available as a standalone service. PlayStation Now customers will migrate over to PlayStation Plus Premium with no increase to their current subscription fees at launch.

As this is a massive launch effort, we’re rolling out the new PlayStation Plus offering in a phased regional approach. In the June timeframe, we’ll begin with an initial launch in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the world where PlayStation Plus is offered. We aim to have most PlayStation Network territories live with our new PlayStation Plus game subscription service by the end of the first half of 2022. We also plan to expand our cloud streaming benefit to additional markets, and will provide more details at a later date.

Building upon more than 25 years of expertise in gaming innovation, this change to our subscription services highlights our continued efforts to evolve our network services business to match our customer’s preferences. With the all-new PlayStation Plus, we’re focused on delivering a compelling game subscription service with curated content from our exclusive PlayStation Studios team and our third-party partners. The newly enhanced PlayStation Plus will enable our fans to discover and engage with more content than ever before, and deepen their connection with the PlayStation community through shared experiences.

We’re providing an early look at our new PlayStation Plus subscription service today, and we’ll plan to share more information with you as we get closer to launch. Stay tuned.

*Local pricing may vary by market. PlayStation Plus catalog titles may also vary by market and tier, and may change over time. • Current PS Plus will remain the same and give us 2 free monthly games. Except we currently get 3 games a month….

  • It’s absolutely amazing how tone-deaf your executives are to your fans. This info was leaked about 2 months ago and the internet blasted it into the ground calling it hot garbage. You haven’t changed or tried to improve one thing!!! You have literally just combined PS + and PS Now into a tiered system. I love Sony and Playstation, but come on… Please do better! This is one of the biggest disappointments ever announced by Playstation.

  • Didn’t really read the entire blog until it said original Playstation. Now if this new Playstation plus service includes classics like legend of dragoon bloody roar 2 & 3 wild arms 1 & 2 and rival schools as Playstation classics which they were then I’m all in for dropping $119 yearly.

  • Quick question! If I’ve already paid for a few years of PS+ what will that do to my subscription? If I have 2-3 remaining years of PS+ subscription, will this just add 60 to upgrading to Premium or something similar? Thanks!

  • Has no one noticed this bit yet… “PlayStation Now customers will migrate over to PlayStation Plus Premium with no increase to their current subscription fees at launch.” Lucky PSNow Customers!

  • I hope this means you’ll be adding a bevy of new games to the service. Maybe even with trophy support.
Though a little disappointing this Gamepass competitor is lacking the ace in the hole of Gamepass (some triple-A games being available day 1).

  • Biggest question ever, there will be a trophy system for PS1 / PS2 / PSP?

Still sad about PS Vita but I understand why.

  • So nothing for New Zealand again?

  • Putting demos behind pay walls … Jim Ryan at his best …

    • not gonna lie i liked things much more as a consumer under kaz

    • Aren’t there demos on PSN store? I remember both demos and Time-Limited Trials being available on PS3 for people with a PS+ subscription… (In fact, the old Time-Limited Trials are still available on PS3. 😆)

Demos are making a comeback on PC, so people should switch/stick to PC if they want to “vote” with their money.

  • Sony please consider allowing Premier members the ability to delete trophies less than 15%. This way, we can sample the variety of streamed games without the commitment to platinum them and have them linger on our accounts.

  • I’m cautiously optimistic about the new higher tiers until I see exactly what games are offered and exactly how well the “old” games work on new hardware and on wide-screen TVs (particular the handheld games), however I find a few things strange about the tiers assuming the details here are exactly right…

Firstly the fact that PS1, PS2 and PSP games will seemingly be available to stream and download, while PS3 games will seemingly be only available to stream.

But the strangest thing is that it makes no mention of the Vita (Sony really seem intent on removing it from history!)

All in, I’m intrigued but not blown away right now.

  • This is worse than what we have now. Instead of being able to choose ps+ OR psNow you have bundled them but kept the price. So now there is no option to ONLY have psNow. Its locked into a high end ps+ membership. You’ve given us less flexibility and nothing new under the guise of a fancy new label. Weak sauce Sony. Your better than this.

  • Compared to Gamepass and how Microsoft handles its older console games this offering from Sony seems kinda weak…Your streaming service isn’t up to par yet.

To be able to have a PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc and download a digital copy is an option you guys need to consider.

We want the option to download PS1, PS2, PS3 games upscaled to constant 60fps 1080p not just a weak steaming option where the quality will be lacking.

All they did was merge Plus with Now which needs improvement.

    • You can download the ps1,PS2 and psp, but PS3 probably will never happen due to the Cell

    • Thats right. Sounds like no enhancements like 4K/ AutoHDR/ FPS Boost for legacy games. Not even Day 1 games. No perks like spotify/disney+/paramount etc. Inferior cloud and save data solution.

Objectively PS+ Premium isn’t really premium. Its just a slapdash repack of old tech to generate some cash and to appear to offer something like GamePass. It really needs to be a moderately priced($89) service for what it offers.

    • Forgot to say, no EA Access as well.

  • But that is just an worse version of Game Pass….

  • ps now isn’t substantially lower than it has been and benefits for highest teirs aren’t worth the price so …no thanks for me, honestly ps+ has been lackluster for years now so i’m probably just not gonna reup as this revamp isn’t that good.

  • What will happen to my current pre paid subscriptions to Playstation plus that I have 3 years left to use???

  • My psn plus expires on 2024, how can I upgrade my plan?

  • It would be incredibly disingenious to offer PS1/PS2/PSP games downloads via subscription but not provide access to the same games if someone purchased them on PSN earlier. Hope they have some solution for honoring existing purchases.

  • So $120 a year for the ultimate PlayStation subscription package? Sign me up ASAP, Jim!

  • So, this means finally we have local PSN servers now in our country (Hungary)? No? Well… then thanks, but NO! Most of the time (hello weekends) PSN internet connection and download speeds s*cks, game stream quality (for youtube and twitch) bad, streams has very low bitrate… Also I tried PS Now once with UK account, there was a huuuuge input lag and quality problems… This is not acceptable for a service which costs money….

  • Please expand the Ps2 ps1 catalogs, that tiny ass library of no name titles is worthless

  • This looks like a W to me. Rolling these services into one package is smart, and simplifies things for everyone. No price change for the standard PS Plus tier was super necessary to avoid pissing off those (nearly 50million) customers. They had to beat the Gold + Live price and they did, with two new packages offering good value. No day and date promise is alright as long as you’re cheaper. They did commit to bringing high quality AAA games to the service though, which will be a big value add if they can keep it consistent. PS Now subscribers will be rolled into the premium tier, so a huge win for anyone who stocked up on that subscription while it was cheap (I bought 3 years worth on Black Friday 😁).

They only thing I really think is missing is a family option/tier. right now it’s not very easy to share this content with others in your household. For an extra $5 on each tier, I think they’d get a lot of takers on a family plan.

  • I hope the ps1,2,and psp have trophies. Also can we get digimon world 1-3 on there please.

  • Compared to game pass this looks really weak

  • And how about the feature to move the region of an account? I moved from one country to other and would like to change my account and don’t lose my progress. Probably thousands of people have the same problem.

    • +1

I also changed country a few years ago and this is the first year I stopped signing because of the lack of this feature. Every store has this option to change region checking a valid card. I won’t resume my subscription until this is possible. Will stay with my Game Pass instead which gave me freedom to change region while keeping my games, progress, etc…

  • Hmmm very interesting! Pricing isn’t too bad. I’m definitely curious as to the retro games catalogue as I agree with the others on here regarding the PS3’s massive library. I’ll never let go of my PS3 due to the sheer amount of games I own and still play but would love it if Sony added more titles with this new overhaul along with PS1 titles.

  • So how will this work with transferring current PS Now subs over to Premium? If I currently have12 months of PS Plus & 12 months of PS Now, will that convert the PS Now to Premium as it states 1:1, and then stack on top of my current PS Plus sub, or will it simply merge my current PS Plus and PS Now in to 12 months total, since this new offering is basically both combined.

What happens with 6 months of PS Plus and 12 months of PS Now, how will they merge that? You can currently buy 12m PS Now for £40, so it could be worth buying it cheaper and letting it convert over, depending what it does with any Plus subscription you currently have.

  • Gotta say this is disappointing. Where are 1st party day 1? Why only a 10% game discount? GP is 20%.

Also streaming for PS3 and probably most PS2 games?

This doesn’t compare to GP which has day 1 first, some 3rd and indie games. It has EA Access included and rumor is it’s getting Ubi + too It’s also going to have day 1 Activision soon along with Bethesda and their entire back catalogs.

I love my PS5 but I know you can do better Sony… If this is the answer to GP (especially since it’s priced the same as GP ultimate which also has PC) then you’re literally handing MS the future.

Think about it.. they keep COD & most Bethesda games on all platforms but on PS5 you pay $70+ and on Xbox you pay nothing and get it on console and PC… Yeah you pay for GP but.. so? Also you can basically get GP ULT for free forever by using rewards and rewards are just downloading the GP app and doing quests that involve playing games. It usually takes me maybe an hour total per month to do every quest. They also give you reward points for every $1 you spend.

So right now using rewards I’m paid up on ultimate through Dec 2024 and I extended it that far over the last 12 months. Now I earn like $40 a month that I can use on games or movies… I’m pretty disappointed here.

Also the free ps5/ps5 games you’re offering are ones most people already own!

  • I was hoping to see the base subscription get some love, or at least a temporary increase to premium to celebrate the launch. Seems like a good idea.

    • You expected this from a company, that just a week ago ruined their flagship title (GT7) by updating it so no one who wants to own top tier car can get it without paying for MTX?
Sony is showing its greedy face now, and it’ll only get worse with time.
      For the Moneys!

  • I’ve been through two generations of console PS4 and PS5 and seen no need to pay for PlayStation network. I buy physical or PSN games yet don’t have PSN sub at all. I’m a casual gamer so don’t have much time to play they games I have. So the concept of even more choice doesn’t work for me. I just want to play the physical or online games I purchased.

That said if they got rid of the monthly games, member discounts. Instead just offer online multiplayer, cloud storage, share play and PS5 game help, I’d pay for it. Maybe £20-£25 for 12 months. Or £100 for a “lifetime”.

PS3 had the right idea regards online. Oh Sony should also sell a one time emulation upgrade £50-£70 e.g. the cost of a game to cover the development. So a good portion of my PS3, PS2, PS1 games would be playable from the discs straight on the PS5. Again no game streaming.

So I guess these newly announced changes just make PSN Essential seem worse value. E.g. for a little more U get more bundled games… Or double I get older games from PS1 and PS2 to download and PS3 to stream.

Thing is I have working PS1 and PS2, but my PS3 died. I have FTTP broadband so streaming PS3 would probably work pretty well. But I’m not a fan of subscriptions or streaming. Otherwise I’d have looked at PS Now.

Launch a PSN Base with no bundled games for £25 yearly, I’d purchase it. Write a local PS3 emulator for PS5, sell it standalone (and use it for your PS Plus Premium)

  • Seems interesting. The only thing i really want to hear is DLC for ps3 games. I love Batman Arkham Origins, Fallout 3 and New Vaegas and have to keep my PS3 just to play the DLCs. With the status of PS3 store on the always feeiling uncertain, the only way to play these DLC for those games (on playstation) is to have it on ps3. I would totally love this news if they included the option to buy the DLC. Honestly, for these old games they should just include all the DLC for PS3 games. I would love to play some of these older games on ps5, especially the fallout games to see if they run any better. Fallout 3 gets pretty choppy sometimes once you progress further in the game.

  • I have ps plus service until 2024 sometime is there going to be a way to upgrade the my existing membership to the new for a smaller fee or do I have to buy it out right at new price does anyone know?

  • Trophies for PS1/PS2/PSP games?

  • Why is the Show a game series you guys develop is going to be on Gamepass Day one but not for your own console? Will you guys quit releasing PS2 games like you did last generation with the PS4 pitiful offering?

Sony makes all these decisions and never ask us the consumers what we want…They rather tell us what we’d want.

  • What willen happen to my playstation now subscription? If I knew this would be coming I would,ve never bought ps now, but ps plus instead.

    • anyone who has a active ps plus will still keep it and it will be on the £49.99 for the year you will just have new options to upgrade to the £99 for the year so dont panic NOBODY IS GONNA LOZE THEIR PS PLUS who has a active one

    • PlayStation Now customers will migrate over to PlayStation Plus Premium with no increase to their current subscription fees at launch.

  • Will there be Day One releases for PlayStation Studios Games?

  • The moment you bring PS3 games *DOWNLOAD* is the moment you kill Gamepass. Don’t even need first parties to launch day one. Cloud streaming? 🫤

  • So if I have another year and a half on plus and upgrade does it get converted. Not that happy how we are not getting day one exclusives I have the series x and the day one exclusives among other day 1 games was a no Brainer to pick up ultimate. Also why are we losing a plus game now I’m guessing it will be the ps4 game right ?

  • Still can’t believe cloud storage for saves is a paid feature. I only use my PS5 for single player games so I don’t pay for a PS Plus subscription, but that means I have no way to backup my saves. Being unable to backup PS5 saves onto a USB drive at the very least is also so scummy.

    • ya, it certainly is. There is a way to backup saves for ps5 games through usb, but they purposefully make it very hard for users to find it.

  • Wow, expensive and puts backwards compatibility behind a pay wall. After decades of supporting the PlayStation brand, I don’t see myself paying for anything above the “essential” tier. Especially since everything is streaming when it comes to the higher tiers.

$119 a year to play cloud versions of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games. I’ll just keep using my PS3 and play the games I’ve already given you money for.

    • 🤔That’s why they are offering multiple tiers. It’s actually not expensive at all if you want what’s on offer.

    • A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations

      you can download PS1/PS2/PSP games

    • It actually is expensive based on what’s on offer. Especially for the ones that have a library of games already and they just want to play them on their newest console along with new games.

  • So far I like what I’m seeing. I’ll definitely be subscribing to tier 3. I already have plus and now so it’s definitely an upgrade for me. Its cheaper and the library is getting an expansion also, what’s not to like…..well, apart from the Ps3 content being stream only, not a deal breaker but I’m sure they could work it out if they really wanted to, maybe some day.

    • 1. it’s not cheaper. it’s the same price as it is now.
      2. library seems to get a hit as well, as currently there are 375 PS3 games in PS Now, while with new plans they talk about 340.
Also now we are getting 3 games per month with Plus, and with new plans it’ll be only 2.
Now wondering how many of those 400 PS4 titiles will be the ones, that were in PS Plus already. My bet is it will be more than 50%.

  • Let us play PS3 games properly, figure it out like MS did. Streaming sucks and isn’t even available in many regions.

Thoroughly disappointed with this announcement but don’t know why I expected any different.

  • What tier does current plus members move to.

    • Lowest. It says right up there. If you want something more than you’re getting now, pay more.
Also – prepare for a downgrade, as now we’re getting 3 games, and with those new plans it will be only 2.
      For the players!

  • I hope tier 1 and 2 will be available in all country region in tier 3 i have zero interest.^^

  • Give me jrpgs.

    Give me the xenosaga trilogy
    Give me suikoden
    Legend of dragoon

I’m ready to dump cash into this lol

  • My PS Plus subscription just renewed in February,my PSNow subscription renewed in December of 2021, will I have to pay anything to receive the premium subscription or will I be grandfathered in until my current PS Plus subscription ends? Anyway, I’m super excited about this!

  • Curious to see how existing PS Plus members can upgrade to a higher tier.

  • I would have bought in if I could play ps3 games natively or via emulation. Seriously have 0 interest in Cloud streaming this crap.

  • $120 for premium seems a little high. Like I get that’s the price of both psnow and psplus but wouldn’t you want the new version to be better. Also why can’t we download ps3 games, the past should be able to make work, idk about the ps4.

  • Have we received a list of all the games that will be playable? (PS3 games mainly)
