Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.

Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.

I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Horizon Forbidden West is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles on February 18, 2022! We were ecstatic to finally be able to share the release date with you last week during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, and to see everyone’s reactions to our news. 

Pre-orders for the game are available now across the globe, so we wanted to share more details about the various editions that you can get your hands on.

Horizon Forbidden West continues six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy, a machine hunter, has travelled west to investigate a mysterious and deadly blight. In these uncharted lands, she will meet strange new tribes and encounter ever more deadly machines. Together with old friends and new companions, she must brave this new frontier to find the answers she needs to save life on Earth.

Now, let’s take a look at the pre-order options you have available for Horizon Forbidden West. By the way, if you pre-order any physical edition from participating retailers (region specific*) or any digital edition anywhere, you will receive the Nora Legacy Outfit and Spear to use in the game. You will be able to redeem these items via PlayStation Store.

The cross-gen Digital Deluxe Edition is exclusively available on PlayStation Store, in addition to Horizon Forbidden West, you’ll receive the following content:

  • Horizon Forbidden West (Digital) PS4 and PS5 versions
  • 2 Special Outfits (Carja Behemoth Elite and Nora Thunder Elite)
  • 2 Special Weapons (Carja Behemoth Short Bow and Nora Thunder Sling)

    If you have a digital version of PS5 then a disc would not work. I understand why the CE and Regalla edition have no disc because those users would not be able to purchase a version that came with a disc. I was able to pre-order regalla edition. I do not understand what all the crying is about. If you don’t have a PS5 why are you concerned about PS5 version.

    Sony is starting to be a pretty non-customer friendly. Ps4 version cannot be used on PS5. Furthermore, the CE does not contain a physical copy… Meanwhile, Microsoft is give their exclusive games for free in game pass.

      So many Day 1 releases and hundreds of games for a cheap gamepass subscription is as good as free. Many gamepass games that I complete don’t really need to be purchased if I am done with them and ones that I liked enough to be purchased are bought afterwards on deep sales.

    You did not have a option before
    So free upgrade = only way
    Ask some mony new dlc separtely = somting diferent .

    If you ask more € from you base games = 70 -80 € = do not ask to upgrade in the first place .

    I would have already pre-ordered, but I’m waiting for Sony to fix this huge mistake with pricing…
    Don’t be greedy, it hurts the company image in the long run.
    Even paying $10 extra is wrong, but fine, just charge $60 for the PS4 version, $70 for the PS5 version and offer a $10 upgrade path from PS4 to PS5. Easy. I’m a huge fan and this is disgraceful.

    I got the PS5 Digital on day 1. I bought Sackboy and Spiderman full price on day 1. I pre-ordered It Takes Two, Ratchet and Clank and Kena this year and bought many more. I have no problem spending money on games.
    But I’m waiting for Horizon Forbidden West to go on sale to play it. It’s just wrong.

    But can we please include a physical copy in the $200 and $260 editions? You can do it like SE or Ubisoft, have the CE content separate from the game and just ship it with a physical copy or code depending on what people prefer.

    Hm, this is confusing. Upgrade from PS4 to PS5 is free, but the PS5 game on the store is still $10 more expensive and doesn’t include the PS4 version.
    Should I spend less, buy the PS4 version then and I’ll get the PS5 version for free?

Ok I’ll rent those unless they have more than just a single player. Still waiting on tLoU2 multiplayer. $70 is too much for a single player only or multiplayer only game.

If there is a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 (as Sony’s CEO states) then should’t they be the same price? In fact just make it a single product.

    Ok, it’s great that Sony acknowledged the misstep and it’s changing their policy on cross-game titles, specially on Horizon FW which was a mess. Thank you, this is the way it should’ve been since the beginning, but better a few days later than never, well done :)

    Now, please, there’s a BIG problem with licenses dissappearing for specific games on PS Plus after renewal (even if the subscription didn’t lapsed), this problem was reported more than A MONTH ago by many users but support can’t solve it. PLEASE, fix it ASAP.

    I legit feel embarrassed owning a PS5 and seeing a blog post like this.

    So you’re going to remove the cross-gen fee only for Horizon: Forbiden West, but not for the rest of future (god knows how many you’re going to insist on making) cross-gen exclusives? We are already paying 10$ more, do you want us to pay 20$ for both versions? Do high-end PC players pay more for the same game to use RTX or some better audio quality? No, they don’t. They are still sharing the same game price with all PC players. Let us share the same price with all the Playstation userbase.

    People seeing this blog post as Sony “listening” and being consumer-friendly are completely blind, they are not being consumer-friendly! They are covering themselves to not get a lawsuit after that Forbes article that went viral exposing their lie. If they were “listening”, they would’ve changed when GoT: Director’s Cut Edition launched and people were complaining about the abusive prices.

    Thankfully the Digital Version PS5 edition was unavailable when I got the PS5 and I got the Disk Version PS5 instead, I would’ve got scammed into only buying games in your PS Store platform where I would be unable to find decent deals for your exclusives even after 8 months of release. Instead I will make sure to keep on buying your PS Exclusives for almost half of the price after 2 weeks of release through second-hand shops and even retail store deals.

    So disappointed.

      Well, if Ghost of Tsushima is anything to go by, it will be identical to the PS4 Pro version, no better LOD, no better textures, not even native 4K 60fps.

      Exactly and now hopefully most the sales will be on PS4 now so at least there was a point to holding the game back for PS4.

      Or we will have a RE8 situation where PS5 sales make up 50% the total sales of the game lol.. with that gap only getting bigger the longer it takes for GOW2 and GT7 to get here.

    You fixed the free upgrade. Now put physical discs in the collector’s editions. One for PS4 AND one for PS5! Or is the PS5 disc backwards compatible with ps4?

    This is the problem you’ve created and are now trying you to dance around. Just implement an Xbox like smart delivery where discs act as a key between PlayStation platforms. Because even though I own a PS5, I’m now incentivised to buy the PS4 version and upgrade in game so that I can share the game later with my little brother on ps4.

    We’re not xbox fans Jim. A lot of us still care about physical games. And you’re not paid to do your job halfway. Give us the physical disks!

      I like your spunk Andrew. Jim Ryan needs to be called out because every third word out of his mouth is problematic. Jim, you betrayed us on the “we believe in generations” line. And no, it wasn’t a lie (technically) but it was a betrayal. Because YOU KNEW how we would understand that and you exploited our excitement for it when you didn’t have to. We would have supported PlayStation regardless.

      Then you promise free updates but want to have your cake and ruin it too. Cross gen games should be free updates. Charge $70 for PlayStation exclusives, fine. But if it’s on ps4 also, that means the full suite of ps5 tools weren’t utilised. So don’t charge us for nothing.

      Also, stop with the greed. Just stop it. We’ve shown up for PlayStation time and again. Fastest selling console right? We’ve shown up for your $70 games. We show up for your state of plays and other conferences. How about you show up for us? Be upfront, transparent and fair. We built PlayStation, why are you trying so hard to let greed besmirch that work?

    The update/apology is still not great. Given it was only done because of the immediate backlash so no sincerity there… The whole $10 upcharge for PS4 to PS5 for what is just a slight enhancement/extra trophy list is also ridiculous. It’s why even with my PS5 I’m not currently or likely ever getting the Ghost of Tsushima PS5 version…

    Given I paid full price from original release and bought the expansion more so recently. So unless a friend gives me $10 and I got nothing else I want I’ll live without the PS5 version. Well Microsoft as far we see doesn’t pull this or say how the growing nature of Sony slowly putting games on PC. Why should I pay more for what is still in most games a free upgrade/update?

    “Play has no limits” Slogan is a pretty bad PR joke given how leadership is nickel/dime things most publishers aren’t. Unless trying to mimic the worse of EA and 2K is the smart/cool thing nowadays… I get making profit and trying to find new avenues to make money. Just please do it in a way that isn’t blatantly trying to rip the customer off and at times try to degrade them…

    Have many friends on PSN who barely or stopped this generation and went PC. Because to them and me Sony has stopped even pretending to look pro consumer or better balance with profit. Only reason I’m around is because of a massive backlog. If things continue to worsen I’ll leave as I did with Microsoft and Nintendo many years ago.

    I mean I don’t get much interaction as mentioned most friends left do to choices made by Sony last four or so years… So outside of playing my backlog I have no connection left. Most news by Sony for recent years has pushed me to stop. Once I do I’m out for good as how my past with other things…

    I only say all this because I hope that doesn’t happen. Mind me complaining online won’t do or change anything. Just pretty much ranting just to relieve so growing agitation.

    it’s amazing how sh*itty sony has become after the success of the ps4. What a waste. even the $10 upgrade is ridiculous when it’s the same damn game. it should be free. it’s not longer a gen difference. it’s a game purchase, it shouldn’t matter what console i have in the moment. Xbox is looking way better right now.
