PS4 System Software 4.00 Will Feature Folders, UI Refresh, More

Our beta for PS4’s upcoming 4.00 update, codenamed Shingen, rolls out soon for everyone included in the public beta program. If you signed up and were selected, be on the lookout for an email with instructions on how to download.

Whether you’re in the beta or not, we wanted to give everyone a glimpse at some of the new aspects of this system software. We’re refreshing the system UI, adding tools for organization, updating the Quick Menu, and much more.

UI Refresh

We’ve made a lot of adjustments and improvements to PS4’s main user interface. That includes some changes you may notice right away, like new system backgrounds and a revised What’s New tab, to smaller changes like updated popup notifications and redesigned system icons. As a whole, it all adds up to a more refined and easy to use UI. The overall look and feel of the UI remains the same — it just has a fresh coat of paint.

4.00 beta Quick Menu

Quick Menu

As you know, pressing and holding the PS button on your DualShock 4 brings up the Quick Menu. We’ve overhauled this menu to make it faster and easier to use. One big change is that the menu now only covers a portion of the screen, meaning you don’t need to leave gameplay entirely.

We’ve added several new items to the Quick Menu, letting you quickly get info without having to back to the home screen. You can see the online status of your friends, and shortcuts to quickly access your Party, Favorite Groups, Communities, and more. You can also customize the Quick Menu, removing or adding items as you see fit.

4.00 beta SHARE menu

Share Menu

We’ve given a similar overhaul to the Share Menu, which appears once you press the Share button on your DualShock 4. Like the Quick Menu, it only covers a portion of the screen. It will save the last social network you shared video clips or screenshots to, making the process of sharing a screenshot or video a bit faster and more streamlined.

You can also upload longer video clips to Twitter (was 10 seconds, now up to 140 seconds).

4.00 beta Folders

Folders and Library Organization

One of the big requests we get is for more options to organize content on PS4. With this update, we’re adding functionality to create folders on PS4’s content launcher and Library. This will help collect your favorite games and select apps in one place for quick and easy access.

We’re also making some pretty big changes to the Library. We’ve added a new tab called Purchased, which will show all of the content you own — games, applications, demos, and betas you’ve participated in. As a result, the Games and Applications tabs focus on content currently installed on your system. This should help de-clutter your library, and make it faster to find the content you’re looking for.

There are some new sorting tools for your Library as well. You’ll be able to sort content by purchase date or install status, and search for specific games and apps via text input.

Trophy Improvements

This update brings the ability to view the Trophy offline. You’ll see a new “offline mode” option if your system is unable to connect to the network, letting you view your entire Trophy collection without an Internet connection.

We’ve also added a button that will let you view the content of a Hidden Trophy. The Trophy will still be hidden by default, but you can now choose to show the Trophy name and info.

Lastly, we’re changing the icons that show how rare a Trophy is. Instead of four boxes that fill, the icon looks like a pyramid with the ultra-rare Trophies at the top.

4.00 beta User Profile

User Profile

We’ve updated the look of the User Profile, making it easier to see relevant info for a player at-a-glance. For instance, you can now see your Trophy progress compared with another player right from their profile. You can also add a background image to your own profile — perhaps a screenshot you took in one of your favorite games.

The update has even more features that won’t be available in the beta, so stay tuned for additional info on what to expect. We’ll be back with more info on 4.00, including its launch date, in the coming weeks.

  • this update is great. access party from the quick menu, organize the quick menu. folders. nice clean new look of the quick menu. would love to be able to adjust volume of each person in a party.

  • This looks like Xbox One now. You’re going to get sewed Playstation.

    • Oh cmon do u really think this kind of big company is that stupid? It’s not your local coffee shop that rights ur name incorrectly :D

  • I got an invitation to download the Beta. It tells me it is recommended to back up my files before updating. Is it required to perform a back up, or can I update without doing so?

  • Dude.. By folders i thought they ment allowing us to copy files to our PlayStation once again but NOPE still gotta struggle with useless flashdrives and useless folders in the next update i doubt i’ll ever use or need.. Thanks Sony! . -.

    • And Also NO custom background for the Ui?? Cmooonnnn Sony, the PlayStation 3 is looking so much better in terms of customization and usefulness . -.

  • please allow full wired connection like whats in safemode.Theres alot of bluetooth issues. controller input lag range and simply not connecting.

  • I would much rather the code be taken out that stops me using my racing wheel with the PS4. The one I bought mistakenly believing the box that claimed it works with pC and Playstation only to find the PS4 forced people to buy a newer one. Fool me once as they say. Stop the greed Sony.

  • Dear SONY,

I really loved all the new features but would like to add more as:

    1. Customize the games you want first not what you’ve recently played so you can make the list on your home screen as you want it to be (to have these options, show/hide, jump right/left to customize it as you like it)

    2. Add the feature that allows you to put your own home screen background with the music you like and keep the themes as the dynamic features only.

    3. Add the trophy progress in (%) for example in A.C Syndicate when you have to destroy 5000 stuff. We kept destroying until it popped up we need to see at least how much % we achieved.

    4. This for the Japenese Ps4 versions, Where O is Enter and X is Back. PLZ make an option where you can make it like EUROPE because if you customize the keys it will be also in the game and we want the home screen and the game the same whenever O = Enter/Back because It’s so ANNOYING when O= ENTER and you want to send msg or invite from the game and now you can’t know O whether is it Enter or Back and it happens a lot.

    We will always support you!
    Thank you & Best regards

  • All I would like to see on my PS3/PS4 is the ability to DELETE the old and outdated junk from my Downloads list that I no longer wish to have or see any longer, like old beta’s, old demo’s, old theme’s, junk Avatars, etc…

THEN, after DELETING the JUNK I no longer want to have, I ALSO wish to be able to CATEGORIZE my PS3 DOWNLOADS List so I can actually FIND the games I am looking for, as I have well over 2 THOUSAND items on that Download list, and it’s a NIGHTMARE to find anything. The Demo’s I have UNLOCK KEY’s for are MILE’S APART!

Sony, PLEASE bring an update that can make this easier for all of us. Enough is enough with the security junk updates that do nothing but stop ODE and CFW users, please begin creating firmware’s for those of us that actually bought your PS3/PS4 consoles that use them for gaming still and those of us that buy your Digital products! Your Downloads List is atrocious to deal with, and it crashes after putting about 20 games in the Download Que, forcing me to REBOOT the PS3…FIX THAT!!

  • Also, the PS3 that I have can play PS1 games, and PS2 games and PS3 games, all on disc without a problem. What is with the PS4 NOT being able to do this? Is it REALLY that weak of a system that it cannot do backward compatibility, Sony? This is completely ridiculous that I need to STILL keep my Model 1 CECH-A01 PS3 at this day and age when the PS4 is supposedly like 100x more powerful, has 8GB of RAM compared to the PS1’s 16MB, the PS2’s 64MB, and the PS3’s 256MB, etc… and it still cannot at least play them using Emulation? Comeon Sony, your doing this just to sell this weak A$$ Digital PS1 and Digital PS2 “Up rendered” junk that we don’t want nor need when we OWN the Discs, and “Renting” the PS3 games that I already OWN on DISC is a slap in the face.

If your going to make a HUGE announcement of a NEW Firmware being all that and a bag of chips, at LEAST give us the most wanted features!

    • I feel ya, buddy :) Playing every Playstation game on one whole system is what we need because that way it will be way more easier than having to get your Ps1, Ps2 or Ps3 out from the cupboard and having to mess with it in order to plug it in.
Who knows, maybe Sony will do that in the future or maybe with the Ps5 :)

    • Well said, but as its a big company do you think they will listen to you? like you I still have all my original ps1 ps2 (sold my ps3) games and feel if you already own a game why would you rent it? I`d sooner be able to re buy it and download it to play when I want, I don’t play on line I have a real gaming PC for that but still enjoy my Crash Bandicoot games…..as I said Well said but Sony are only interested in your money I was hoping for a real up to along these lines like Xbox One has done.

  • At last !It has the ability to keep our own background for ps 4…..

  • I was finally accepted for a beta, and I’m on a holiday lol

Oh well, looking forward to trying out the new features this sunday.

  • Cool finally I have a lot of digital copy’s and all my games don’t fit on the main screen so I need to go to tha ligtbery to search for the game I want to play nice #thankyouplaystation

  • so ummmm, some of that is nice and all. but what i want MOST is the ability to invite or play people WITHOUT having to add them as a friend. and under the same note, much like Xbox. i want a RECENTLY MET tab in my invite/add friend options. i have to say. as my first time PlayStation owner since PSX, i am very disappointed with the GUI. it leaves a lot to be desired. also to note. they should have better filter options in the PS+ store.

  • The quick menu sounds very interesting :D

  • What about a counter of the hours played in each game? It would be interesting, for me. ;)

  • I’m liking all the new UI improvements and user profile backgrounds, which add needed customization. I do hope eventually the photo can come from anywhere and not just screenshots from a game.

  • Any change to “Notifications” like where I can watch a movie and hide friends coming online? instead of turning off all my notifications to watch a movie, then having to go turn them on again after i watch video.

  • I want to know if it going to fix issues with fallout 4 mod support or do I need to SELL my PS4 and get and XBOX ONE

  • So will this update be available to everyone? Just confused because I’m not exactly sure what the public beta is. Also, is there any information on when it will be out (For Example: September 9, 2016)?

  • Well I was hoping for some backward compatibility for older ps1 and ps2 games, I was holding off moving to the Xbox one to see it if was going to happen, folders option sounds good though but that’s about all, is it going to be you HAVE to update or can we have the option to leave it as it is, as they say if it`s not broken!

  • Hey Sony, are you going to add in copy music, videos, pictures etc in an update. Maybe make it that we can use a picture as our profile pic… Please?

    • You can use any picture as a profile pic since the beginning. And now in this update you can have one for your profile menu background.

  • WHEN WILL WE BE ABLE TO CHANGE OUR USERNAMES!!!!

  • GREAT UPDATE!!
I wasn’t really fond of the old popup notifications, including the sound. The new ones look sleek. Hopefully the sound is a bit more pleasing too.
Everything in this update is a step in the right direction. I hope Sony keeps this up!

  • Can’t wait for the Trophy enhancements

  • When is this update going to be released?

  • I wish there was a screen saver that could be turned on or off like the PS3 has.

  • All good and nice improvements.. BUT..WHEN THE HELL WILL YOU IMPROVETHE DOWNLOAD MANAGER?! It doesn’t restart downloads when it get disconnected (a feature that PS3 Download manager can do, shame on you! PD: Vita need this too!), nor You can manage in which order download, or prioritize wich downloads download first or faster…

Come on! is year 2016, that’s common stuff… DO IT!

  • Although I like my name, can we please have the option of changing it. The major thing I want is for the ps4 to let you play your own music in games. For example, if I create Jeff Hardy in WWE 2k17, I want to use his “No More Words” theme instead of that generic crap that’s already in the game. I hate having multiple superstars use the same song. Please make this happen. WWE 2k14 on PS3 allowed it so I know there’s a way to make it possible.

  • Me disponibilize tô version 4.0 Beta tô my PlayStation 4

  • Can the next up date have a video chat like Ps3 did but better

  • I wonder if we can get video chat on Ps4 like we can on Ps3 but better.

  • Gr8. Waiting for the official 4.0 update ASAP. Love the new UI theme named “Dual” and also the loading bars replaced with “Triangle, Square, Circle & Cross” animated effect. Thank you for making the PS4’s UI look more classy than ever.

    • Yeah, the loading shapes was a nice surprise. Don’t really know why they look so great and apecial, but glad that they’re there.

  • All we need now is external hard dive support

  • Im just waiting till the day we can leave comments on games on the playstation store. Giving a game 1-5 stars is good but being able to read what people have to say about the game before you buy it would be great too.

  • its going to be a good one, really was looking forward to something like this

  • We need a ps4 trophy tracking feature

  • This is gonna help me a lot!

  • This is the update I have been waiting for

  • Hope the additional Features are

    External HDD support
Trophy Tracking ( would be nice )
Skype or similar integration ( although Skype owned by Microsoft doesn’t matter PSvita had it )

  • With the new update 4 oo the profile picture looks so small …Please make it bigger thank you Sony

  • Remote Play on PC does not work. The App Says, it has to bee updated, but there is no update for it.

  • and there’s something I always want it.
having some screenshotes as UI Wallpaper
cause I have Awesome screenshots from UNCHARTED 4 and I wanna have it as UI wallpaper … c’mon please this is so important to me and other players … or you can simply put a voting about this feature …Thank you,,,

  • Please add custom wallpaper.

  • Still no “export to Dropbox” or something similar, eh? Maybe in 2019….

  • Folders would be nice to keep my games separate from my kids stuff

  • I hope with the folder option, they’ll have an option where you can just keep the app in the same spot, so your favorite game will always be in front without it moving backwards if you don’t play it. So you can put the apps in order from which you play the most, so it adds more organization.

    • You can arrange the items in each folder, so that you have the most important game of that group in the front

  • The only thing I want is to be able to video chat with my brother while we play online (he lives 1500 miles away)

  • So far Im loving the look of this update. Hopefully I can join the beta testing of the next one too. I did get a lil carried away with the folders tho I think.

And the new quick menu is beautiful how it comes up.

  • Finally! What is sad is most of these big changes have existed for years on PS3. How does it first off, not launch with the PS4 and second, take 3 years to add? Folders, Trophies offline, organizing content, etc.

  • One of my opinions about what we still need on ps4 is a way to organize our friends list… Like my Destiny friends, my Gta Friends, my BO3 Friends, like a way i can sort out the people who I play diferent games. That will be a good addition to the friends options. And will be more organized too like to find friends you can put some of the same friends in the same lis too just to find them quick. … Tell me what you think and if that is possible thanks!
