Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.

We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:

  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

And if you’re attending PlayStation Experience in San Francisco this weekend, you’ll be able to play these PS2 games on PS4 at the show floor:

    Personally the ps2 is my childhood and some games id like to see are
    Test Drive Eve of Destruction
    all the nfs
    Fast And Furious
    Flatout 1&2
    Dark Cloud 2
    Nascar Dirt to Daytona

    this is personal as my dad had past December 20th 2012 and me and him both played ps2 games, so the games i listed were my dads favorites and honestly i still have a ps2. I want to see some of these on ps4 so i can play them to bring back the great memories i spent with my dad. he got me into gaming.

    We’re pretty disappointed with the backwards compatibility thus far, especially the pricing. Not seeing any titles that I was looking for…

    I hope to see these soon! This feature was the main reason we opted to go with PS4 over its competitor and so far, not too impressed with the selection and pricing.

    I really hope they add Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicle) to that list soon, along with every other game people are requesting.
    I don’t even own a working PS2 anymore so the more games the better, especially my childhood favourites.
    I’d also love to see the Kingdom Hearts games on here too as I’ve never played them, but with the new game out fairly soon they probably have other plans.
    But yes, please please please add Dark Cloud 2, I’d pay double even just to enjoy that game once again.

      Okay after looking up ‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ the word SOON may have been an overstatement.
      I also realised the Kingom Hearts games are on the PS3 already but only physical versions, that’s why I didn’t notice.

    There is a recurring theme throughout this comment thread, and that is Socom. Seriously, what will it take for us to at least be acknowledged by Sony. I will fight for a Socom remaster until I die. Please give us our game back, if you’re worried about money, don’t be. There is a huge community of us left, if you didn’t know that before, you should have known it after that seemingly pointless favorite ps2 game poll that it by far won. You could make more money off of Socom now than you did before, stop ignoring us please. SOCOM forever!

    Yoshida how can a game win fan favorite of the PS2 before the emulation gets brought out and you leave the game out?????? Socom 2 has a community greater than any other game and still gets disrespected. Look at our 10,000 people in our community…This is embarrassing. I see grand theft auto on the emulation which socom beat out. Please explain. Ill wait.

    I was more than happy to snag Rogue Galaxy, and was actually very surprised (in a good way) that it was one of the first. It is a fantastic game but not one of the highest profile PS2 JRPGs. This rollout gives me hope for many more good things to come!

    If I could only have one more, I’d throw my vote towards Final Fantasy XII, but in the end, the PS2 has an awesome library and I’m hoping we get to see many more JRPGs.

    Not sure HOW these come to be, but I’m also hopeful that Konami lets some of their stuff come over (The Suikoden games, and the Wild Arms games in particular.)

    I was excited until I saw that $15 price point. I will probably still buy Rogue Galaxy just to play it again since it emulates like crap still. Other than that, I won’t be supporting this ill fated venture with my hard earned money.

    Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 would be great. MGS1 too but that is a PS1 game. Other PS2 game that would be great to see are The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Fahrenheit, Spider-Man 2, Ultimate Spider-Man and The Getaway.

I’ve Always Been Loyal To PlayStation And Have Always Thought It Was The Superior Console.     I think everyone is missing a big issue. The ps3 isn’t getting these new ps2 classics! There is no reason we shouldn’t be able to get Dark Cloud on the ps3. I hope it’s coming soon, along with the rest. I don’t want them to stop releasing ps2 classics for ps3. I have $15 bucks for a new game. I don’t have $400 for a PS4. :( Please don’t forget about the loyal gamers you still have on the ps3.
