Media Player Coming to PS4 Tonight

Hello PlayStation Nation! Every time we announce new features for PS4 here on PlayStation.Blog, I love going into the comments to answer your questions and see feedback on which features people really like and which ones people still want to see. One of those questions I have been able to count on has been, “Where is our PS4 media player?”

If you were watching our E3 press conference pre-show, you probably heard the good news – Media Player for the PS4 will be available to download from PlayStation Store this evening. A Media Player icon will appear in the PS4 content area, simply select the icon and you will be taken to the PS Store where you can begin the download.

Media Player Coming to PS4

The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4. Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4!

Of course, we know what you really want to see: look below to see supported video and audio file formats and codec details.

  • The media to player still doesn’t recognise my Samsung 2tb hard drive when connective via usb

  • Well done Sony! It took just a few years to do what the PS3 had since the first day. I have been a huge a complete fan of the PS brand. I have played since I have memories, unfortunately I love my classic music, which rarely comes either on a USB or on the unbearable spotify of yours.
I STILL CANNOT LISTEN TO MY MUSIC, and I AM STILL PXXXED.
I am seriosuly thinking of buying a second PS3 and bring back this one.

It is grotesque that the PS4 does not offer a quite simple service that the PS2 had already (!!!!)

  • This update is great, definitely a step foward. That being said, I am having problems playing apple lossless files. These are still M4A/AAC files and some of them seem to play, which is confusing. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

  • While this is good and all, I’d like a remote like the Blu-Ray one for PS3 if you could.

  • So is this only through USB? We still can’t store media into our internal HDD?

  • Why do you cancel my comment?
Because I do not praise you far having introduced after years a basic feature of any console?
Plus I cannot play my CDs on this great PS4 of yours.

You, and your music service, are just ridiculous,

    • Sony does not have a music service. PS Music is Spotify, and in my opinion it is complete crap compared to what we used to have with Music Unlimited, so they will not be getting any money or ad money from me using the service any time soon. Unfortunatly, niether Sony or microsoft shipped their systems with optical drives that read CD’s, so unless the can figure out how to read a CD with the DVD or Blu-ray wave length, we will never have this.

    • I agree with kbg29. the quality of Spotify is just Crap compared to Music Unlimited.

  • More game with 4 player split screen I have 4 controllers that I am NOT using I feel like I’ve wasted money on them because nobody is using them. PS3 has COD 4 player split screen zombies & multiplayer games. And I would think if you want to show off the graphics and how will the PS4 plays then 4 player split screen would be a good way to do it. thank you.

  • What About Backwards Compatibility when will we be able to play ps3 discs on the ps4

  • screw these updates why not try to out do yourselves and update the ps4 to make it backwards compatible like x1 and that was just a update they did and not a whole new system. i might as well return my new ps4 for a x1 since i cant even use dlc from ps3 on ps4 you guy need to step it up some soon your going to be old news and there will be a new company replacing you with better stuff.

  • I am very excited to see this feature finally added. One major question though, what format does the external hard drive need to be in? That is all, can wait to play all the ps4 exclusives. No man’s sky looks incredible!

  • Well, I’ve already bought a computer for the lounge since PS4 didnt have DLNA, and before that, I was already using Plex from the PS4 browser. Now PS4 has Plex app which is everything I wanted from DLNA… PLUS MORE!!!!!

It’s great that DLNA and media support is finally coming, though, a little redundant now xD

  • Great been waiting for this for ever thank you Sony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would love to see support for external sound cards (external USB audio interfaces), so that I can finally play games through my delicious speakers.

  • FINALLY!!! it makes the ps3 media player run like windows 95! So awesome. I just hope they patch the ability for it to read a partitioned drive larger than 2TB. It doesn’t pick my 3TB as 2 separate drives like how the ps3 does….BRING ON A FANCY ASS NEW REMOTE PLZ:)

    • Excuse me good sir. Did you have to download any software on your PC for the media player to work? Because I just downloaded the app on the PS4 and it`s not finding my home network “automatically”…

  • I5 does the work. Won’t play ANY of my video files. My TV IS A SMART TV with dnla support and I have no problems playing them directly to the tv though. Such a shame.

  • PristineSneakers

This is a fantastic step in the right direction! There is only one thing left to do:
Let us get the media on the HDD.

This isn’t even so much to do with media storage, but with game features. I recently bought MLB The Show 15, and when I learned that Sounds of the Show isn’t available for PS4 players, since there is no media storage on the HDD, I asked for a return. I printed out my return packing slip today, and will sadly return it tomorrow. I want to play the game, but I can’t tolerate the loss of such a significant feature in a newer edition of a game, and on a newer platform. There are other games that use custom music as well, both on PS3 and on the PC platform. To have those shut off from the PS4 is a real shame.

Seriously though, the new media player is great on its own. I just think we’re not 100% there yet =)

  • It says it plays mkvs so why doesnt it???

    • mkv is a container. think of it as a big box that you put video and audio streams into, and there are a ton of different codecs those streams can be encoded with..

the ps4 knows what to do with the mkv container, but it doesn’t necessarily know what to do with the different codecs that you used. this is just like if you take a fresh windows 95 install, and try to play a divx movie (that is using the avi container). windows 95 might support avi out of the box, but it has no idea how to play back the divx stream inside the avi container.

  • Do I need to download any software on my PC? Because I just downloaded the app on the PS4 and it`s not finding my home network “automatically”…

  • Great job sony, I can finally listen to the first five seconds of my songs. I’ve always wanted my music to spend more time buffering than actually playing.

  • That’s well and good but where is the backwards compatible? It’s great we can stop using our ps3 for media but we will still need it for our huge collection of ps3 games…

  • One thing about the ps3 that I loved, was I could download audio entrance music from YouTube to customize characters on wwe games, ps4 will not allow that, when will that become available

  • SRT Subtitle Support for the hard of hearing. Also naïve DTS support from media player.

  • Guess I will check it out tonight…

  • I tried my WD ultra 2tb, which is filled with movies, and a notice came up saying that it is not compatible and I could not open/play media. Anyone know the reason for this?

  • So Any Ideal with this Media Player will be able to talk with Mac? I tried to connect no go.

  • Thanks for implementing HDMI Device Link with the new Media App. It’s great being able to use my Sony TV remote to control playback, instead of having to reach for my controller.

  • Thank you!
Now, get ps classics, ps2, and ps2 games to BUY not rent in the Playstation store or through psnow or give us backwards compatibility. The ability to organize the menu bar would be nice too as it gets clustered with all of the games and apps. Friend online notifications! I love my ps4 but we need the little things to make it that much better.

  • I love that we now have a media player thank you so very much! You guys are doing awesome with bringing the feature side of the ps4 to match up with what we had on ps3 and it is very much appreciated!

Features I would love to see:
Allow us to make our own custom themes again like we could on ps3, including setting our own wallpapers. It adds a very nice personal touch to our systems

Video chat would be nice to have back without having to do playroom or something streaming like that. I liked being able to setup the video chat function on ps3 with family and friends during holidays or what not to connect with everyone easily.

I would like to see games have a 3d enabled option again on them, i have a 3d tv and was kind of sad to see a lack of games on ps4 that had 3d on them.

Backwards compatability with ps3, ps2 and ps1 games would be great, i know that the now service is available but i have quite the library both physical and digital that i would like to be able to access on the ps4 without having to pay for games on now that i already own, or own the rights to play.

Excellent work Sony please keep it up, and continue bringing your supporters the features and games that we love and miss!

  • Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I tried all of those video file types and not a single one of them worked every one of them said can not find file.

In the end it was convert to m4v and back to plex

  • I was so excited when i turned on my PS4 and saw it, my eyes went 0.0

  • Will I be able to use a drive formatted in NTFS or ext2, ext3, ext4 or other file systems other than fat16 or fat32

  • Great idea! Great app!!! but…
It’s almost disappointing that there is no support for external subtitles files.

  • I HAVE ONE WISH!!!!!!! AND THAT IS FOR SONY TO GO BACK TO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY!!!! Microsoft has done it with the Xbox one! ….Now if Y’all at Sony would just do that! I would Die a happy Gamer!!!!!

    • You may die disappointed bc Sony wants to make as much money as possible and backward compatibility would be a loss in their eyes.. I think it would be a gain for game companies cause I know I would spend money on ps3 games for my ps4…

  • ok everyone, try your TV remote, it works awesome with the PS4 mediaplayer! you know all these useless buttons in every TV remote, the pause, >> > <<.
well, they finally have a reason to exist! I love it! if your TV is a smart TV you will most likely have that feature "BRAVIA SYNC" or any CEC enabled TV. just sync your TV to your PS4 or PS3 and enjoy useing your TV remote with the XMB and the media player.
I hope this would help anyone who's been wanting to use a remote on PS4. I've been using it for ages I even turn my PS4 using the TV remote. my TV is a sony BRAVIA, but most other good TVs have the CEC feature with an other name.

also for sony! THANK YOU SO FREEKIN MUCH! now I respect you. MKV!!!! please improve it more? dual audio and FLAC audio? I love you! … :D

  • Ps3 media server works pretty well with this

  • persainreddragon

hi thank you sony i waiting for this too much and just it need to supporting of subtitle so asking you to put subtitle support in next update
and it very good if supporting persain sub in thats update becuse in iran there is many PlayStation user that need this and it beter persian sub support will be for all regions especially 2 thank you

  • coldblooded_1989

it is best ps4 app thank you sony but it need to support subtitle espcialy persian subtitle in srt and sub format please add this support in next update

  • Support for subtitles would be great.

    • I heard from enabling closed caption in accessibility settings it would enable them but still no luck.

Bring us the subtitles Sony Please!!!

  • Great, but please add support for subs in videos (MKV/AVI/MP4/…) !!

  • Why can’t the media player play files in the .mpg container? The system is capable of decoding mpeg as it has no trouble playing DVDs so why do I have to put my mpegs into a .m2ts container to make them play? The PS3 plays .mpg files without issue.

Better yet, since mkv is supported, why is mpeg video not supported in the mkv container? Why does only .m2ts support mpeg streams?

  • Without Apple Lossless (also .m4a) support this is of no use to me at all. Why not include this as well? It’s a free and common codec, so where’s the problem?

  • AMEN!!!!

  • praise Jesus!!

  • support external hard drive and the ability to erase games from library.

  • I read this on reddit, this is on USB drive, don´t know if it works on dlna:

“You need to enable Close Caption
    System Setting
    Accessibility
    Closed Captions
    Display Closed Captions.
    Probably restart the Media Player.
    Load Movie.
Option > CC > Turn ON.
    *work for external .srt
I tried with embedded srt, it doesn’t work”

It worked for me, but it could not handle special characters like ñ áéíóú and like that

  • More voice commands!! :D

  • Needs Ogg support (video / audio)

  • It’s great that Sony finally added a Media Player along with being able to access Media Servers on your network. However I really hope Sony did not just create this Media Player with the current supported Codecs and call it a day. There is still a lot of different kinds of Audio and Video Codecs that are not supported by this new Media Player!!!

Sony trust me on this you will make a hell of a lot of people very happy if you keep updating the Media Player from time to time with more Codecs being added. Take a long look at Media Players like VLC and Potplayer for examples of the kinds of Codecs you need to be adding. More people will buy a PS4 if all there favorite Codecs are supported!

Please Sony don’t stop at “Media Player 1.0” :)

If possible please add all the Codecs that everyone is requesting here!!!

    Thank You

  • And yes a Remote for the PS4 like the PS3 has is now really needed!

  • Add free streaming of PS Now titles if it detects the disc in the tray, and free streaming of PS Now titles of games purchased digitally. Also, allow “suspension” of any PS Plus title downloaded for free, so that the user may buy it to keep it forever without having to wait for their Plus subscription to expire.
