Media Player Coming to PS4 Tonight

Hello PlayStation Nation! Every time we announce new features for PS4 here on PlayStation.Blog, I love going into the comments to answer your questions and see feedback on which features people really like and which ones people still want to see. One of those questions I have been able to count on has been, “Where is our PS4 media player?”

If you were watching our E3 press conference pre-show, you probably heard the good news – Media Player for the PS4 will be available to download from PlayStation Store this evening. A Media Player icon will appear in the PS4 content area, simply select the icon and you will be taken to the PS Store where you can begin the download.

Media Player Coming to PS4

The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4. Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4!

Of course, we know what you really want to see: look below to see supported video and audio file formats and codec details.

  • When are we getting Google+ & The Hangouts app video chat please

  • I don’t see FLAC or DTS audio support listed. Will these maybe be added in an update?

  • Thx a lot plastation !!!!!!!!!! (synology+mkv+ps4 = <3)

  • Much love, Sony. Can you put out a media remote now, too?

  • The PS4 still doesnt accept some MKV files with regards to Audio, short of changing the file completely I cant seem to get it to do it. On my computer I need an AC3 filter for them to work and I know I cant get that on PS4. It’s definetly something that should be considered though.

  • Pretty much useless to be honest. Sorry!

    I added about 50 videos (all in MKV format) to a exFat formatted Hard Drive. The PS4 could see 3 of them. The only common denominator I can see is;

    All three were older files.
All three were less than 3gb in size.
All three were 720p or lower.

You have to update that Codec support because my SmartTV (which is also pretty useless at this sort of thing) could see over half.

Until you get this sorted I’m going back to my Western Digital Live TV player and forgetting this app actually came out.

  • Hey guyz if you video cannot be played or its not benn recognized Make a folder and name it as MOVIES and put the videos in it …it worked 4 me though

    • That doesn’t work. You name is movies or videos it doesn’t mean it will play. I tried that. It doesn’t work.

can i save music from usb?

  • Hello everyone I had a few questions…

1.What programs can i use on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop to setup a media server that the ps4 will recognize BESIDES Windows Media Player? Also, I have 3 MKV files i cant get to show up while all the other content if not most of it does…. not even folder there in.

    2. does this use internet traffic? (I have a data cap with my ISP)

    3. Has anyone had trouble with MKV files (20gb or larger) ??

    4. Lastly, If Windows Media Player is the only option I can work with…. when adding or deleting files from the directory I have added or designated for PS4 MEDIA PLAYER to use, will Windows Media player update with the new content(when adding new files and folders) and remove the old files (if deleted)?

Thanks… Any help is greatly Appreciated.

chatted with 2 reps but no avail.

    • 1. I think Plex is a pretty popular one, though I’m out of touch with Windows these days. Should do the trick.

      2. Only if you try to access if from behind your LAN. E.g. You have it set up in your home and you access it from your work/office/school/whatever.

    • Err. Sorry. Accidentally posted before editing. Here’s my answer again:

      1. I think Plex is a pretty popular one, though I’m out of touch with Windows these days. Should do the trick.

      2. Only if you try to access if from outside your LAN (for e.g. if you have it set up in your home and you access it from your work/office/school/whatever).

    • try universal media player, i think its better than plex and its a damn sight better than windows media player.

  • 1) Create/Arrange Folders

    2) Allow us to have a Wishlist on the Store, with notifications whenever an item we want goes on sale

    3) Either:
    A. Give PS+ members a discount on PS Now rentals/subscriptions (Even just 10% would be nice)
    B. Let us play games we can verify that we own on PS Now for free/cheap
    C. Give us a “Mega-Bundle” with a year of PS+ and PS Now for about $100

    4) Let us view our Friends’ Trophy screenshots when comparing trophies

    5) Make all PSOne Classics playable on the Vita. I’d still like to finish the Crash Bandicoot games.

    6) Start adding PSOne/PS2 to PS Now soon. Maybe even include some of them in the Subscription. PS Vita is more complicated, but it could be focused on later.

    7) Let us edit comments on this blog

    8) 16 Player Party Chat

  • Let me stream FLAC from my server and we are gold!

Thank you Sony for the background music streaming with this!

  • now bring this app to vita and ps tv

  • Great__Cornholio

Amen! This way way overdue. It’s been 1.5 years since the PS4 release. I’m a happy camper now

  • Podcast’s are not supported, FLAC not supported, MKV not supported….
there is no search function, you have to scroll through everything to get what you want. (if you can find it…)
updating Windows Media player wont show new content, this cant see it in the ps4.
tried talking to customer support?? they don’t know, and don’t offer suggestions or alternate options.

Come on guys, seriously?? I know the idea is awesome, but you can do better than this….

makes me kinda miss my ps3…

  • Awesome. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add a sort by DATE ADDED to the videos section. Anyone who uses DLNA has hundreds of videos, and scrolling alphabetically is terrible.

Also, it seems this app makes a noise while scrolling, even if you have muted those noises for the rest of the playstation navigation (is that a bug?)

  • Where’s support for Vita file transfers? Any ETA on when the Vita will be able to copy files over?

  • finally

  • Please, add subtitle support. I’ve been waiting for subs support since PS3. Subtitles is the feature to turn my PS4 into my preferred media player.

  • Nice! Can we get a native remote now??!!?!? Or at least patch in the use of the PS3 remote. It’s tough to watch content with my PS4 controller glowing brightly next to me.

  • Having issues playing back some mkv and mp4 files. Other than that thanks for this update.

  • Please make the PS3 media remote work with the PS4. I absolutely hate having to use the controller as the battery is constantly dying and it sucks having to get up and recharge it because its out of reach then. “OMG THIS “A dedicated BT remote (or make the PS3 remote compatible with the PS4)?” x 1000” x 1,000,000!!

Thank you for finally adding the media player. It was a sorely missed feature and there isn’t a good reason why it wasn’t included at launch. This is 2015 and with a lot of competing media players out there why would you want to push your users off to other brands/devices?

  • No FF on TS files

  • Will my external hard drive need to be a certain format for the ps4 to read it?

  • Great news!

Now give us a proper remote. Or better yet, allow us to use the existing PS3 remote.

  • 1. 2 step verification for PSN
    2. Ability to add a recovery/secondary email and number
    3. A pin code for PSN login and purchase
    4. 2 step verification and/or pin code for adding/removing a device to the PSN ID.

You have to in today’s security world.

  • Awesome! Been waiting for a long time. But could you please add -AVI Motion JPEG- support in the near future just like on the PS3?

  • add ability too add them to the ps4s hdd

  • any word on the specifics for mkv support?

specifically, do softsubs work, and does it support 10bit h264 / hi10p?

  • Just tried the media player. It didn’t work. I created a folder that said videos. It showed the folder and files. It said no playback. I tried mpeg, mpg, avi, gp etc. None of them worked. I don’t know what to do. Did I not create the folder to allow access I mean before I just put them on the flash drive and it didn’t show. I created the folder titled videos it showed them in the list but didn’t play. Sony can you help me out here.

  • Sony please add all the following!!!

    1. audio cd playback
    2. flac, ogg, wav and opus audio files
    3. dts audio in video files
    4. subtitles (both internal and external)
    5. vp8 and vp9 video codecs
    6. wmv, .mpeg, .mpg, .vob, .mov files
    7. ntfs, ext2, ext3, ext4 formatted drives
    8. selecting which audio track to play in a video.

  • Already buggy.

I first opened the app and it showed me “connect to media server” “Favorites” and the usb option like it should.

Once I allowed my computer’s media server to be connected to, it gave me a the screen explaining what the Media Player does, but doesn’t allow me to connect anything or back out of the screen. Only lets me open the browser to view the guide.

    Waiting for an update….

  • I NEED HELP! On the media player it won’t recognize my USB hard Drive and when I plug in USB from my IPOD to PS4 it doesn’t show any music I have in there. I also tried the USB stick my mom has and it still showed no music. Why?

  • CD Playback is a must!!!

  • Wallpaper feature where we can use our own pictures for Wallpaper on the PS4 is a must!!

  • Great job on the media player. Downloaded after the press conference and tried playing a few different files from my NAS. Worked amazing. Even better than the PS3. It may have taken a while, but it’s worth the wait. Thank you to the PlayStation OS/app development team for delivering one more great reason to own a PS4. And now to watch a bunch of movies.

  • Will my external hard drive need to be a certain format for the PS4 to read it???

  • Awesome! Now I would just like to be able to download my PS4 purchased TV and movies rather than only being able to stream them. I would also like to be able to stream that content on the Vita and PSTV rather than having them take up space on those small memory cards.

  • What about DTS support? I have a ton of movies all with DTS sound.

  • DTS Audio for MKV is a must!!!

  • It’s a good start but we need to be able to have games make use of MP3s in-game like MLB The Show’s sounds of the show. Will this work for that?

  • Glad to see this. Now we need

    1)Ability to appear offline
    2)Ability to change PSN name
    3)Backwards compatibility with PS3 games
    4)Personalization of home screen
5)Ability to download a different browser or push for flash player ability on browser
6)Ability to save music on HDD and have game play our music like on the ORIGINAL XBOX.
    7)More voice operability

  • Please add “Sort by Date” for the videos and Pictures.

  • Storing MP3’s on the hard drive is a must for MLB The Show fans!

We really miss Sounds of the Show!!!

  • I had a problem at first. I just put a mp4 video straight onto the usb, not in a folder or anything. Then I made it a avi file, didn’t work. So for the people that had this problem, I found a solution! put it in a folder!

  • Hey by the time I buy a PS4 it will be awesome.

  • will it play my old 78’s

  • Can we get WMA and WMV support soon?

  • Great. Now that you acknowledge we want to watch movies on our PS4, when will you allow support for 3rd party remotes?

  • OMG I saw this yesterday on my PS4 and I was like “WTF is this?…another piece of junk app?”….lol I must’ve missed them talking about it in the conference.I can’t believe we finally got this…and it supports MKV!!! goddamn MKV!!! that’s what I’m talking about.
Thank you, thank you Sony for hearing your fans,I can’t thank you enough for this.Best thing to come to PS4 yet….now PS4 is approaching the right to have PS”4” as its name.

    OMG THANK YOU.

  • Thanks for the media player! It’s great!
Is it possible if you guys add subtitle and audio switching options to the .mkv files? That’d really make it perfect!
