Media Player Coming to PS4 Tonight

Hello PlayStation Nation! Every time we announce new features for PS4 here on PlayStation.Blog, I love going into the comments to answer your questions and see feedback on which features people really like and which ones people still want to see. One of those questions I have been able to count on has been, “Where is our PS4 media player?”

If you were watching our E3 press conference pre-show, you probably heard the good news – Media Player for the PS4 will be available to download from PlayStation Store this evening. A Media Player icon will appear in the PS4 content area, simply select the icon and you will be taken to the PS Store where you can begin the download.

Media Player Coming to PS4

The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4. Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4!

Of course, we know what you really want to see: look below to see supported video and audio file formats and codec details.

  • This is great news!

I would love it if you could add the following down the road:

    1. FLAC audio support (PLEASE!)
    2. DTS support
    3. Subtitles/Audio track selection for MKV/MP4 files
    4. Information of type of audio track (AC3, DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1, etc) and type of video file/bitrate

And if you’re still listening can we PLEASE get more cloud storage space for our saves? PS4 saves are too large and I’ve already hit my limit. Thank you!

  • Cute, when do we get folders and grouping for our xmb?

  • Really need to update some of those codecs, put a number of files (with encoding specifically in that list) on a stick and none of them even showed up on the list of videos.

  • Will it finally read CD’s?

  • I just got through trying it. It works with some of my video files (.mkv, .mp4, H.264, x264) and it works with some and not others. I know it has many other factors than that, but I just wished it work with all the video/audio codecs, and just simply worked no matter what codec is used for audio or video. Works fine thus far on the stuff that does work.

  • So far I tested the MP3 files and works like a charm…. :) the video’s on the other hand, not so much… I don’t understand why they need to do this over an app… this is dumb.. they should of done this in a system update and and make more like the way the ps3 Media Player worked…. this is just a step back in time if you ask me… It’s not like I paid $400.00 for a PS4 to have more features or anything! [rolls eyes] looks like i’ll be watching my movies on my PC tonight….. Thanks Sony !

    • should of got the people that made the ps3 media server on this team to come up with something better…

  • 3tb internal HDD support through a firmware update.

  • Media remote now please.

  • Custom Wallpapers! PLEASE

  • you know what i’m done and i give up..

    no help here whatsoever.

can’t use plex cause i refuse to pay for a service that was free before,

can’t use the retarded media whatever that i downloaded.
so i’ll just connect my laptop to my tv via hdmi and call it a day..

  • Then PS Classics will be next, right? I’ve never had a PS2 before.

  • I gave you guys a lot of grief about this since the announcement and the launch and the excuses since then.

Kudos on doing this finally :)

Also, would like to echo the sentiment of more Plus storage space since saves are FAR bigger on PS4 now!

  • Please Please PLEASE!!!! Notify us when our friends go on and offline its so annoying not having this feature now and in my opinion its a must!
    Thankyou :)

  • Super happy surprise for me!

I’m using it right now, working great!

  • Thanks, finally but was hoping it would support subtitles.

  • Please add subtitles *srt and *sub! :)

  • Can you please add subtitle support in MKV, and please add ARABIC language for the subtitle
Thanks a lot for this great new player, PS4 is the ultimate entertainment device now !!

  • Good job!

  • Great! All i want now is an update that allows me to make folders for PS4 so i can organize my games better.

  • Awesome! All we need now id backward compatibility and I will be happy. MS did it now to step up to the plate Sony.

  • Needs better format support… seriously how are you not support all the formats that the PS3 did? (Wheres the Divx and xvid support?)

Needs the ability to stretch videos to fill the screen if they are smaller than the screen size to allow playback with no black bars. Even the Xbox 360 can do this…

Once this matures… it will be perfect.

  • This just shows how out of touch you guys are. Where’s support for Divx, Xvid, DTS, DTS-HD, and TrueHD? You obviously have no clue about modern media formats and how the general public uses them. FFS, there’s still no NTFS support. NTFS is pretty much globally standard.

  • That’s nice, but no native DTS support?

  • Wow, Sony. So it says playlist but it’s still in alphabetical order….. Seriously?

  • Thanks for the media player, it works for almost none of my movies though, I own over 300 dvds and over 100 Blu-rays, when i backed up all my faves to my media comp, i put them all in MKV and the highest audio available, such as DTS or DTS HD MASTER.
The media player does not play most of my files nor does it allow to change audio stream, since MKV allows for multiple audio streams, it would be nice to be able to select which one, example, audio 1 DTS HD, 2 AC3. Hopefully these changes will be added in a future update soon.

  • This should have been included at launch! That’s one area’s among many where Sony dropped the ball with the PS4. In terms of features, the PS4 was step backwards compared to the PS3.

But at least Sony took a step in the right direction by adding the media player.

  • Okay so the xbone will have backwards compatability with xbox360 games.. When is Sony going to admit that this will harm the ps4 and provide the same feature? I have so many ps3 games that I can’t play.. I’m never going to buy them for ps4 so…. Over to Sony!

  • Well the video and photo options seem to work just fine. Unfortunately the MP3 playback appears to be completely broken. It will not find files on USB drives and while they will find them when run through a media server they will claim to be unsupported/corrupted files when you actually try to play them assuming the icon means the same thing on the PS4 as it did on the PS3. These are files which worked just fine with the now defunct USB player so I know there shouldn’t be an issue with the formatting and they play just fine on every other device I’ve put them into so I know the files work.

    • I take it back MP3 files will play off a USB drive as long as you still put them in the music folder. Seriously Sony why did you give us access to the full directory tree then limit the folders where we could place media to the ones used by the PS3, that makes no sense from a software design point of view.

  • Good to have the option, would be better if it would actually work.
Supports mkv files as far as seeing them, but can’t play the one’s which the ps3 has no problem playing.
And when it plays some of them then it doesn’t support the audio from it. Makes a video quite useless.
Fix it guys please. It meant to be a very basic function from the very first day of the console. Just make it to do what ps3 can do and I’ll be happy.
And let us copy staff to the console please. Thank you!

  • Wow, Sony. So it says playlist but it’s still in alphabetical order….. Seriously?

  • Still can’t play CDs, and it’s not picking up all mp4s from my gig stick:(

  • I want to play psone and ps2 classics on ps4. Make it backwards compatible like xbox one

  • I’m not an Xbox fan, but after this E3 I have to say Microsoft won in hardware announcements.
The xbox one backwards compatibility is just awesome and we can’t even play our PSOne games on PS4! Even my PS3 does more than that I can play PS2 games (Thanks for the 60Gb fat model!)

But have to say the truth, the are truly making money reselling “HD” or remaster editions that you already have ;)

  • Please add 24Hz 1080p support for video output playback (good for MKV)

  • Add support for .srt and .sub, please!

  • Hell yes

  • It would be awesome if we can save music, videos and photos on PS4 without insert The USB each time.

I hope there will be update to do that.

    Thanks

  • I would request that you guys bring backwards compatibility to the PS4…..

  • Thanks but, why no DTS support when the console supports it? Bizarre.

  • Please add the ability to set our own images as backgrounds.

This would be extremely valuable on it’s own anyway, but especially so in conjunction with the PS4’s screenshot capability. And I presume it should not be hard to implement at all.

  • This app is a 9/10 for me, the only thing missing is volume control for videos. Its available for the mp3 section, why not the videos?

  • subtitle support please :)

  • please add H265, DTS, subtitles and audio language change option in the player, otherwise it is very limited for the use

  • The ability to play other PS formats on the PS4 would be really nice!

  • But, but…My poor PS3. Well we still have Southpark The stick of truth to finish up old buddy.

  • The player is decent, but music tracks are sorted alphabetically according to their internal tags and not their file names. Please fix this!

  • Finally, thank you!!! Now since you’re tight with Android, just let us cast to the PS4 and I will be eternally grateful.

  • finally, I’m super excited for it but its a nice start i have 2tbs of HDD and possibly buying the nyko data bank when the time comes the ability to save the media directly to the ps4 would be great as well

  • Really? Not even FLAC support? No DTS or High Resolution Audio? Better than nothing, i guess, but a better idea would be to do it right the first time.

  • Sony always wins
