Media Player Coming to PS4 Tonight

Hello PlayStation Nation! Every time we announce new features for PS4 here on PlayStation.Blog, I love going into the comments to answer your questions and see feedback on which features people really like and which ones people still want to see. One of those questions I have been able to count on has been, “Where is our PS4 media player?”

If you were watching our E3 press conference pre-show, you probably heard the good news – Media Player for the PS4 will be available to download from PlayStation Store this evening. A Media Player icon will appear in the PS4 content area, simply select the icon and you will be taken to the PS Store where you can begin the download.

Media Player Coming to PS4

The Media Player works with both your home server and when plugging a USB stick with media into one of the available ports on the PS4. Your home server will appear as a media option in the player automatically and finding your media is simple and quick. You may also simply enjoy music as background music on your PS4!

Of course, we know what you really want to see: look below to see supported video and audio file formats and codec details.

  • Some visualizations would greatly improve this application. Any plans?

  • I just tested many Mkv files i have and not a single one worked. >:(>:(>:(

  • backwards compatibility Please!!!!

  • dope feature now if we could at least have the options of storing those songs, videos or pictures on our systems instead of streaming them from external devices then we’d b all good, being able to use those picutres as wallpapers would b awesome as well to make some wut of a custom theme

  • Multiple audio track support (for switching between e.g. stereo, 5.1, DTS, different languages, etc. …)!

  • *Skype
*Remote Play from the PlayStation App
    *Remote Play for split screen
*Elite DS4 (with a mic built into the controller) to rival the new Xbox controller
*More games that make use of the Camera
    *Time Warner Cable

PSN has the potential to be a social network.. Imagine your PSN profile was like you FB page and you could post and share with PSN friends… Think about it Sony!

  • Finally! We can watch movies from USB! Now only if it actually worked. smfh

  • tackleboxthegrea

Very nice. I would like to see external hard drives being compatible though. Would be a lot easier to use you know? Please make this happen :(

  • Is it possible to add folders that contain videos or music?
Mine only shows whats in my downloads folder for videos

  • NICE! FINALLY CAN WATCH MY MOVIES ON MY EXTERNAL HDD! Although they also promised to be able to plug in our external HDD & hit play like on the PS3. When is that coming?

  • Though I just recently got my console, I still have to say…. FINALLY! It’s a start. I’d like the option to save media TO the console, like the ps3.

  • Mine will not play content. I get a ‘Cannot play the media’ message. Anyone else have this?
file is mp4. Codecs are avc aac.

  • Thanks for this! I am now seriously considering shifting to PS4 for all my multimedia needs! A few bugs I have noticed in videos played through a network server (WMP server):
    1. Some MP4 (AVC) files will stutter badly despite being playable normally in other players.
    2. Some MP4 files will not generate thumbnails but are playable.
    3. I noticed that the player will remember where I left off in videos but sometimes this is reset for some videos. This appeats to be random.

Other suggestions to improve PS4 as a media/video player:
    1. Please remove the install shortcuts for Video apps because they just clutter the screen with apps I don’t use.
    2. A way to separate and organize apps and games on the home screen without going to library.
    3. PS4 media remote please!

  • The media player is a step in the right direction, hopefully through time you will add more file formats that will play on it, FLAC being the most important to me and I also hope to see a 1.5x speed option added as well as i use this all the time on my PS3 and the PS4 not having this option yet is the only thing holding me back from moving over to my PS4 for everything.

  • Am greatly appreciative of the new MKV capabilities. Now if only it would accept certain mkv files. Not sure what the problem is. Assuming it doesn’t like part of the audio codec? Plays just fine on my pc. Hoping for an update someday to meet my video needs. Until that day I guess I will be forced to sift through my files. Also I JUST noticed this problem; my anime doesn’t show the subtitles? So some flaws are to be expected I guess. Just want an update :'(

  • I am honestly extremely excited that they added in this feature to the ps4. I absolutely loved using it on my ps3. I do have two problems though. I was hoping that we could connect media via call phones. Also, I was expecting to be able to download the media files onto the ps4 itself after you connect your device to it. I could do both of those things on the ps3, so why not on the ps4 as well? If those two things could possibly be considered, I will become an even happier camper. Either way, I am still excited to be able to listen to music on the system.

  • Great after this long time at last the media player is here. I have some request for features. A volume control for movie playback and showing information about the used codec during playback like it had on the ps3 would be nice.

  • They add MKV support….yet don’t support DTS audio…lol…f’ing Sony. So most of my MKV files are useless on a PS4. As for MP3’s…it plays almost none of them. All i get is the broken icon when i try to play a track. No idea why it will play some MP3 files and not ALL of them. The USB Music Player works way better too. If you choose a song through the Media Player and hit the home button, the music restarts. Using the USB Music Player…hit the home button and the music continues without issue. They got some updating to do with the Media Player. Doesn’t read my Subsonic folders correctly either. I wonder if Subsonic DLNA is the issue of why the player wont play most MP3 files for me. Setting my phone as a DLNA device…plays MP3’s no problem. Hmmm

  • This is a very lame question, probably beneath all of you, but can someone please tell me how to set up a media server on my PC so I can start using the PS4 media server app? I searched online but obviously not asking the right questions because I can’t find the answer anywhere.

  • The Media Player needs a ALL MUSIC feature for usb music. I hate having to go from album to album why cant I just SHUFFLE ALL MUSIC? The USB Music Player you guys removed had it why isn’t it here?

  • Frank_Garrett316

Can someone confirm if this will have subtitle support?

  • I plugged in my external HDD which is loaded with avi files (and plays fine on my 360, the only thing I use it for now!) – yet the PS4 Media Player displays no files at all !!

Anyone know if there is a way for me to fix this?

    • SONY decided to get stuck in the 90’s and use fat32….As someone leaving in the 21st century, you probably have a hard drive formatted in NTFS…you fool!

  • Are you coming out with any college sports games in the future?

  • Kodi is also a great Media Server that will also work with the PS4! :)

And there is also Universal Media Server.

  • No doubt about it this new PS4 “Media Player” is going to need a lot more codec support or it will fail!!

  • It would be nice to hear from the team that created this Media Player and see if they can answer our questions.

  • No WMA Lossless support = EPIC FAIL! Now I will have to use my Xbox One to stream music from my home server. AND NO FLAC EITHER? REALLY???

  • Thanks so very much for the media player, Sony! I’m very grateful for it!

What I would so dearly love to have now is an improved store. The one we currently have is awfully difficult to navigate. The store we had on the PS3 prior to the current one was so much easier to use and navigate. We could see Sooo many more items at once, and finding things was a breeze. Things were organized a lot more effectively. No, it wasn’t perfect, but it was easier to use by an order of magnitude. (It also didn’t crash when I went to my cart to pay.) we can’t but what we can’t find. Please consider revamping the store. Thanks!

I’d also like to thank you for button remapping in the last update because I didn’t do that last time. I’m LOVING IT! I play a lot of first- and third-person shooters, and prefer firing and aiming with R1 and Lq, and when I come across a game that tries to force me to use R2 and L2 to perform those functions, I become all discomboobulated. Thanks to button remapping, my games aren’t ruined, so thanks a million! You’ve improved my gaming experience a lot!

Really, truly happy about the media player. Please keep up the great improvements! I’m a very happy PS3/PS4/Vita gamer!

  • no support for subtitle? ive tried movies with srt, not showing up

  • FAT32 in 2015…..really guys, and you call that next-gen…LoL

  • with a delay of 2 years ! aleluiahhhh !

  • it’s pretty sad my comment was deleted. i didnt even say anything bad…….just the truth about me not being able to use my external drive like on my xbox…….

  • Video chatting that was fun with online friends.

  • This new feature is great.

I would also like to see you transfer PS4 media (screenshots and video recordings) through the network onto a PC.

Gets annoying transferring videos and screenshots onto a USB stick or external HDD then onto the PC.

If I can transfer straight away onto a media server PC, that would be awesome.

I’m lazy, but it would be a great feature to have added to the list.

  • Wow, SRT subtitles DO work, you just have to turn on Close Captions settings in PS4 setup and reopen the media app. You will then have a new CC button for playback menu. Pretty hidden but priceless!!!

  • Why no xvid support?

  • Anyone more than me that cant play mp3 files? Videofiles works but when I open a folder with mp3 files it says that there is no media to play (in swedish)

  • It’s great to FINALLY see this feature! Thanks so kindly.

The playback controls leave a bit to be desired. It really doesn’t stack up compared to Netflix and even the old PS3 player. Please consider adding in the “Scene Search” feature that we know and love from the PS3!

  • Anyone able to get it to read Plex server? Yes I know there is an app for it but would like not have to pay for it and have it stream like it does on my PS3

  • Ability to link to Itunes on a NAS and play Apple Lossless Music.

  • Next I would love to see support for external hard drives. Also if PlayStation wanted to put a boot on the neck of XB they would make PS Now free with your PS Plus. And PS Now has way more games.

  • To enable srt subtitle. Try to re-save the .srt into utf8. Open srt with notepad.

  • Hi:
I really don’t understand why you disable all the Featured the PLAYSTATION 3 already have in the PlayStation 4. The worst part is to read all people saying “Thanks” as if this were something new… STOP!
We deserve it and it’s not a favor.
Now, when will give you COMPLETE Backwards Compatibility for PSOne, PlayStation 2 on PlayStation 4? Don’t you feel ashamed after this E3 215?

  • How come whenever I plug my external hard drive it says, “The USB storage device cannot be used. The The file system is not supported.”????

  • The only thing i really miss from my PS3 is the Videochat, which i used everyday and all day, right after a long game day or night or before a long game or night. So McCarthy what ever happen to,
(I love going into the comments to answer your questions and see feedback on which features people really like and which ones people still want to see)
you have not answer anyone at all and there’s 400+ comments and still counting. And i know you are not going to say anything about a videochat on the 4 but would be nice to see one up in there. I had one on the Vita, why not on the 4??

  • why can’t I play my old cd’s on the new media player.

  • Thank allot for this. Media player is a great addition for the PS4.
One feature I’m waiting for as many others is the support for
external dives. The games today are really big and even if I already
have upgraded my internal dive I’m beginning to get little space. Being able to
add external drive would solve the problem. It could also work as a backup drive as well.

One more feature I badly looking forward to see is being able to play my games that I purchased
on blue ray without having the disc inserted. This must be possible to solve. Some games I really liked to OWN
due to exclusive bundle and packaging. I do buy missy of my games from psn but still it would be a great feature.

    Cheers

  • At long last my major issue preventing my purchase of a Playstation 4 has been resolved. I’ll have it soon. Sorry PS3, you no longer can’t do everything. I’M SO HAPPY!!!

  • Please add PCM support.

  • I’ve tried plugging my Galaxy s5 in and it absolutely will not read it. I have a music folder named Music on it, I tried connecting to PSApp while trying, turned on tethering on my phone, everything I could think of, and the media player wouldn’t work. Shouldnt have to deal with this kind of trouble. I think until we can burn a library to the system, I’m going to stick to playing my computer through a separate set of speakers…
