As you probably know, PlayStation Network and some other gaming services were attacked over the holidays with artificially high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. This may have prevented your access to the network and its services over the last few days.

The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.
From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.
If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.

Since PSN has been down and now that it is back online supposedly, I am still unable to connect to PSN on my PS4 console. Whenever I try it keep coming up with this following message:
“he connection to the server has been terminated. (NW-31194-8).
I paid for 1 year playstation plus membership, what is the point of paying for service that I can’t even access. I am extremely dissapointed with PSN for their incompetence.
PS can someone please get back to me!

I Recently Started Up My PS4 And I Logged In And It Says That The Connection Has Been Lost
Experimenting with the MTU’s in the Network settings isn’t going to hurt your system, so try different numbers between 1477 and 1400. Heck, try lower than 1400, if you have to. MTU’s only determine upload and download speeds anyways. If you find a number that works for now, run with it.
Thanks for putting this back together. Has been working for me since yesterday morning (EST).
A few things you may want to look into, that didn’t help with the angst of the last few days though… :
* My PS+ renewal came out of my credit card right in the middle of the outage. I want to renew, no doubt, but it’s quite ironic to see that the only transaction that happened is renewing a service that was off during the renewal!
Worse: The PS+ games I have on my PS4 were locked due to inability to verify licenses
==> Looks like a single-point of failure to me. Have at least separate services (Store, licenses, online gaming, trophies repo…) depending on different servers so that one attack on one doesn’t mean everything is down.
* PS4 without network is lacking: Trophy list doesn’t show, profile doesn’t show (or maybe I just didn’t find the offline setting?). Please take a PS4, remove the network cable and ask a gamer to test.
* Compensation: You’ve always been appropriate with your customers as compensating them. 4 days offline at Christmas time was rough. We offered a PS4 to my son so we could play co-op together and had a few hours yesterday to try before he had to go away. Not fair, not right.

finally able to log on and in call of duty multiplayer i live in mo so hopefully everyone else up soon i reset my modem and ps4 lets hope it stays on
Not everyone can pay online yet tho. My ps3 still works online but my ps4 won’t. I only have one account and they are both wired connection. Somebody help I haven’t playing online ps4 in over a week. If I can play on ps3 I should be able to play on ps4 correct?

1) go into settings,
2) go into network,
3) go into view connection status and note down your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and Primary DNS numbers,
4) go back and go into Set up Internet Connection,
5) choose between wi-fi or lan cable,
6) choose custom for internet connection,
7) choose your network,
8) choose manual and then add your values for all the things listed in point 2)
9) press next
10) MTU settings- choose manual
11) Change MTU setting from 1500 to 1477 or lower. Don’t be afraid to keep trying smaller numbers. Max MTU’s is 1500.
12) Proxy Server should be set to Do Not Use
13) Test Connection.
I can’t even sign in to my PSN on my ps4. But PS3 is ok. PS4 without being able to sign in to your ps4 is worthless. Might be switching to x box 1 hate to say it but I give it one week if I still can’t log oN my ps4 with an active PSN and a plus membership looks like in going to Microsoft
And no, modem or router has nothing to do with this. If it did, you wouldn’t be able to post online. lol

As far as I can tell, changing the MTU setting in Network settings manually fro 1500, to anything between 1477 and 576 works. If one number doesn’t work for you, try another. You have like 900 numbers to choose from. Something is bound to work for you.

Well it’s the 29 Dec and I still cannot access PSN with my PS4!! Tried using the online support feature which gave me a phone number to call……the number doesn’t work! Not happy as everyone else I know is able to get back on. Anyone else experiencing the same?

Days later and my family still can not sign in on our PS4. We have done all the recommended resets but still nothing. As most of the oldest child and dads games are online only this is starting to become a serious piss off.

I am still without PS4 after several days! I have reset my router and rebooted my PS4 several times to no avail! What is going on!!!!!

For every day you cannot connect due to Sonys incompetance i suggest that you all pirate one of thier movies each day.
Hit them in the wallet, do it in mass, and spread the word of the idea.
why is that I keep getting error code “NW-31194-8” when I try signing in to PSN ? when I asked my cousin to sign in of his playstation on my account it signed in fine? has this hack messed my console up? it would be nice to hear SONY explain all the problems this may be causing because its p**sing me off!!!!!

I just changed my MTU to 1450 and bam! My kid is now gaming! :)
In network settings i just put everything on automatic exept MTU of course.
I wish Sony would have told me this days ago!
@royal_43_stiles You tried all 900 numbers between 1477 and 576? I can only tell people what worked for me, which was 1475, and then restarting the PS4, then trying to sign in. Worked first time I tried. Since then I’ve been testing all the MTU numbers, that’s how I came up with 1477 to 576.
Still not working for me this is stupid you expect people to pay for a system and the for the plus said of it yet you can not keep it safe from this sort of thing it is bad management and laziness
I still cannot connect to the network the last 5 days of my Plus account, and I couldn’t even use it. May be small potatoes to a corporation like Sony, but in my world, dollars for frivolous things like Plus are not priority. Thanks for cementing my opinion about your QS.

Why should Lizard Squad be prosecuted? Because SONY Engineers are incompetent. Because the Sony security team can’t do their job. Now I’m a PSN play like all of you, but your blame is misplaced. We should be mad at SONY( a multibillion dollar international juggernaut) who allowed some young punks, albeit very smart punks, to crash their entire network. This should be on SONY for not protecting us, their income, their customers. #hailLIZARDSQUAD
Changing the network settings is only a temp fix, you should def change it back to the 1500 once they officially working again. Also we shouldn’t have to do any of that – either say the PSN is online or don’t, and i’m even more pissed off because i pay monthly for this, i should get the equivalent in credit to my PSN Wallet for each day i was not able to sign in, not fair.
