PS Plus: Preview September’s Free Game Lineup

There’s a little bit of déjà vu going on as our PlayStation Plus members will once again receive two games free the day they hit the PlayStation Store – Velocity 2X on PS4 and Joe Danger’s release on PS Vita. Of course, there are other great titles including Sportsfriends on PS4, PS All Stars Battle Royale and Hoard on PS3 and TxK on PS Vita.

On PS4, Plus members will be able to download Velocity 2X and Sportsfriends. Velocity 2X is the sequel to Velocity Ultra and features arcade shooting and puzzle platforming with a cool teleportation mechanic. Sportsfriends is the perfect title to complement your parties, as it features 4 mini-games – BaraBariBall, Hokra, Super Pole Riders and Johann Sebastian Joust– to bring out the competitive side in everyone.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you can nab PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, the game where you can get together with friends and pit PlayStation characters like Sly Cooper and Kratos against each other. And Hoard, an action-strategy title where you’ll play as a dragon attempting to get as much gold as possible.

PlayStation Vita owners can pick up Joe Danger for the first time on the platform and enjoy some good old fashioned stunt racing, as well as TxK, a remake of the classic arcade shooter Tempest.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting September 2nd. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Very disappointed with ps3 plus not enough free games and ever sense this 2 free games a month crappie started no real hid free games have come out if ps3 plus keeps ducking this bad I won’t be renewing my ps3 plus this year

  • Very disappointed with ps3 plus not enough free games and ever sense this 2 free games a month crap started no real good free games have come out if ps3 plus keeps sucking this bad I won’t be renewing my ps3 plus this year

  • This is some god awful bunch of barrel scrapes, one and all. At least this month had Dragon’s Crown, something halfway decent.

Yeah for the record if the games are so worthless that you would not even take them for free, then obviously there’s a perfectly valid reason to complain. Especially since we get much less of a selection than was available year round before, for whatever money grubbing reason.

  • @495 smoothboarder540
And you still haven’t noticed yet that popularity =/= QUALITY
“Most of those games you list as mediocre or bad are very popular and well liked games.” Obviously you’re just part of the brainwashed mass that just go with the trend.
Yes, “we all have different tastes”, but those are catogorized by “bad taste” and “good taste”. And guess what, what’s popular most of the time fall on the “bad taste” category!

  • This will be the first month since having PS+ that I don’t download anything. I don’t have a Vita, I already own All-Stars, but the rest of this does nothing for me.
When will the PS4 get a REAL game. We were suppose to get Drive Club at launch, and even though I am not a huge car game fan, I would rather have that than these Indie re-hashes.

  • September will be a really great!!!

  • I have PS3\PS4 as well as Vita and this is the first month when NONE of the games interested me. Terrible.

  • @Viewtiful_Gene Yes you are the ultimate god and your opinion means more than the “brainwashed mass.” My point for the person I was talking to is that their tastes appear to be limited and don’t fit with what Sony usually offers.

Sony tries their best to please as many people as possible, and that is obviously extremely difficult. The process is completely subjective, so what Sony does to help with that is to look at sites like Metacritic. This is where the popularity and positive reviews come into play. The result is a list of those games that AbscissaAbscissa calls mediocre and junk, and the majority of gamers disagree.

Did I ever say that popularity equaled quality? No I did not, however I do like many of those games. I’m not some hipster that hates everything popular. Bioshock Infinite is a great game. You can call me brainwashed if you want. I could not care less.

  • This is junk. I don’t care what anybody says about the diverse nature of gamers as exhibited by the comments here supporting all of these indie games, what it comes down to is that we expect a level of quality from the PlayStation plus instant games lineup and this month there is it one. Your AAA game of the month is seriously PlayStation All-Stars?

Sorry, and this is something I never thought I would hear myself saying but, Games with Gold destroys PS+ this month.

Or maybe, this is going to be the continuing trend. Keep giving us garbage games on PlayStation Plus so that will be forced to rent games on PlayStation Now. Don’t hold your breath. I’ve got 80 games alone on my hard drive that I haven’t even touched and a dozen on disc. even if you keep giving me junk I’m still going to have plenty to play.

And not for nothing, where are the AAA titles that we’ve been promised for PlayStation 4?

  • CaptainHawk1 I’d like to see where Sony said we’d be getting AAA games on PS4. Also, are you forgetting that we got Crysis 3, Dead Space 3, Dragon’s Crown, NBA 2K14, and Sly Cooper in the last three months? That’s only the major ps3 games over a period that costs a maximum of $18 for you. Yes, this month is not great for a lot of people, but you can’t win ’em all.

  • @smoothboatder540 you sound more like a fan boy. Maybe you still have a betamax system.

  • Month to month there are people that are vocally unhappy with the month’s freebies…. perhaps think about it like this: if you take advantage of any sales, especially those crazy flash sales: your membership will pretty much pay for itself. Now consider that your yearly membership would cover maybe 3-5 used games…. and you get 35-50 games over that year….. so if you only like 1/10 games you’re breaking even IF YOU IGNORE tbe aforementioned discounts and sales. I’ve tried lots of games that weren’t on my radar from IGC and found quite a few gems. I’ve only had a PS3 since Christmas but I’ve been so amazed with how over-the-top amazing IGC has been…. sometimes I just sit there doing nothing because I can’t decide between the 20-or-so IGC games on my backlog.
Keep up the good work you guys! You can’t please everyone and some people will always demand more no matter how much they are given.

  • Worst PS+ lineup in 2014…. PS all-stars is entertaining, but the online multiplayer barely works

  • Wow this service is getting really lame, come on what is going on guys?

  • Strangely enough, I’m quite interested in all of those games, lets see!

  • I was surprised to read that people were disappointed in the past few months. I’m looking forward to trying out PS All Stars!

  • Yet another lame month plus is a joke any more.

  • OMG Sony with all of these indie games for the ps4… You ruined my favorite handheld game console (ps vita) and now we bought a ps4 next-gen console to play indie games only???

  • @ShadowJR Wow, namecalling will never end on this blog, will it? But you are right; I am a fanboy of video games. We have all of the major consoles in our house. I will admit that I did not know what the betamax was. Considering that you do, and that you have the PS3, PS4 and Vita, I wonder if you’re being a tad hypocritical.

I enjoy a wide variety of video games and Plus gives me an opportunity to play them for a very cheap price. Call me a fanboy if you like. I could not care less.

  • im very disappointed, i dont like any of the games, and i have ps all star so it will be a bad month…

  • I’m not overly impressed with September’s lineup, but I don’t really care. Never have. But that’s just me, and probably many others like me. See, many of us got Plus way before the IGC was a thing. We wanted the discounts and cloud saves. Maybe an occasional “free” game. So then the IGC arrived, and that was pretty cool. Free games. Now…I only say “free” because from my perspective, they haven’t cost me anything. I was already paying for Plus anyway. Someone mentioned Netflix. It’s true nobody says the movies on Netflix are free, but that’s mostly because Netflix doesn’t give you anything but movies and TV shows with your subscription.

Doesn’t mean you have to see it my way. Many subbed after the IGC was born, and many of those because of it. So it’s natural for those people to expect the same quality (subjective though it may be) of content. Even if you do see it my way, you may still think this month sucks. Fair enough.

  • The IGC’s perceived downturn in quality may very well be due to PS Now. But I have to admit that while I do like AAA games for free (or “free”), I haven’t played many of the ones we’ve been given over the years. While my overall backlog has a lot to do with it, just as often it’s that I don’t want to download a 40-50GB file. So I tend to buy the AAAs that most interest me at retail.

    /2 cents

  • Pretty nice month for Vita owners, I loved Velocity Ultra, let’s hope 2X is even better

  • As disappointed as I am with Joe Danger and TxK and as “meh” as I am about Hoard and Velocity 2X, at least this month I’ll actually have a buddy getting a PS4, and for a game with “Sports” in the title I’ve actually seen good fun things from it. I wouldn’t pay money on it, but I’ll gladly take it for free =P

And Playstation All-Stars…this one is actually a Godsend for me. After having to move to another account when I got a PS4 (I was sick of my old, stupid username and being permanently labeled a child account at 19) I had to lose a lot of data, in particular my downloaded PS Vita copy of Playstation All-Stars. So being able to re-acquire that game for free, in addition to being able to trade in my PS3 copy’s disc for some extra cash, more than makes up for an overal lackluster month for me. So for that, I tell Sony thanks.

Also, to be fair, This is the month when Destiny hits the shelves/harddrives. Pretty sure a lot of people will be more focused on that than whatever free games they get from PS+ for a month.

  • good one more month ,and im cancelling its been rubbish for ages

  • PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE US FULL GAMES FOR PS4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERY GAME BUT OUTLAST HAS BEEN CRAPPY SO FAR! I WOULDN’T MIND INDIES EVERY 2ND MONTH BUT EVERY MONTH WITH NO FULL GAMES IS REDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Don’t care for anything this month. Maybe if people quit giving great metascores to crappy games we would have a better selection.

  • Everyone is complaining, but I don’t know why. I’m more than happy with Velocity and Sportsfriends!

  • I would like to see these games in the US PS+

    1) Red Dead Redemption – Game of the Year Edition
    2) Max Payne 3
    3) Darksiders 2
    4) Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
    5) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
    6) Psychonauts
    7) Limbo PS3
    8) L.A. Noire Complete edition
    9) Beyond Good and Evil HD
    10) Dark Souls
    11) Last of Us
    12) Guacamelee

  • First time PS+ subscriber I am. Got it cause it felt like the right thing to do. After all having been an XBL Gold subscriber for 5 years and watching PS+ get some amazing games during that time. I wanted a piece of that action, I am also still waiting to get some of that action. Since PS4 launch… Waiting doesn’t come in 1080p @ 60fps… But all these indie games I am paying for each month do. So I guess that is a bonus. All I really feel like doing is justifying a purchase of a Vita just to get my moneys worth out of PS+ this year.

  • I have had playstation plus from the beginning and im sick of it now, rubbish games every month not worth my time once it runs out I wont ever renew its pathetic and this is the worst month.
whom ever is in charge of selecting the games should be shot and the worse thing ps now is coming and im sure you will rip us a new on the prices.

PLAYSTATION PLUS IS A JOKE I WILL NEVER RENEW AGAIN…. DISGUSTING

  • @DRCLARKEY People are annoyed because they spend 300-400 on a ps4 and got told how amazing it is???? well I can tell you now I have owned a lot of ps4 games and they all suck, they don’t do anything what a ps3 cant do.
I sold my ps4 and im glad and once my pathetic ps+ runs out I will not renew it, once ps now is out then all these games will be void anyway

MAYBE IF THEY OFFERED PS4 PLAYERS BETTER GAMES OTHER THAN INDIE CRAP THEY WOULDNT GET SO MUCH STICK……………………………. SONY HAVE LOST MY RESPECT THEY ARE BECOMING MICROSFT

    MONEY GRABBING WAN**ERS

  • It’s time to bring back a quote from E3….after the nightmarishly bad PS Vita showing there.

    “SONY, WE WILL NEVER FORGET”

  • Sorry for the double-post.

You can almost imagine what the PSN PLUS meeting @ Sony was like this month:

“Destiny comes out September 9th….why should we release our better titles this month when everyone will be too busy playing it? No one will notice.”

And then, September’s garbage is trotted out.

Look….I think PS + is a great value overall, for the price. Heck, for me, January’s amazing releases alone (Bioshock Infinite, DMC) practically paid for my subscription, and then some. Outlast for PS4 was a pleasant surprise to see as well, later on.

But many of us really get the sense that some months (like September), Sony just totally blows this thing off.

I have nothing against Indies, but when ALL your offerings are Indies, something is wrong.

I’m hoping the quality of these offerings goes up in the last few months of 2014.

  • Great lineup! Cannot wait.

  • It’s a little lackluster this month for my personal tastes. No big deal though imho. They all can’t be winners and guess what? It’s almost 4thQ! Destiny/NHL15/Madden15 this month.. DA3/LoTR next month.. plenty to play..

  • Pretty solid lineup if you ask me. Not sure what’s with all the complaining.

  • TxK needs to come to Playstation 4… I love the Tempest games, especially Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar.

  • The disappointment continues. After I got PS+ it seems there’s been nothing but indies for everything. There’s seems to be at least 1 good game each time though

  • Crappy lineup. Could have done so much better. I bet next month it will be great!

  • Add me to play Destiny and to become part of my Fire Team.
    -Become Legend

  • What happend to Sony? Seems like they dont care anymore. Its close to a year and we only received garbage. Why cant they just give us a decent game for the PS4? There are 40 AAA titles out. to be honest they gave nothing for us players who spend our money to push them forward on the top. i just want one decent title but they are even to greedy for that, can you image that? what happend to sony

  • Sony makes a lot of money with PS+, but they have no reason to put good games in the IGC, because its not the first priority, the subscribers need to pay anyway, so they dont care. they dont need big games to hold the customers because you need it to play online.
The Quality is irrelavant because you need to get Plus anyway for online. They keep the money for the onlineservice and for themselves.

its over with 2 good games, welcome to IGC INDIE GAMES COLLECTION.
maybe 2016 they will give you a decent game.

  • Oh, man these games keep getting worse and worse. I would rather have a better discount on AAA titles instead of these games..

  • I want to sell my ps4 n buy a xbox one, between crap/no games and servers being down. ps4 has been the biggest waste of money. Sort it out sony

  • August was a big disappointment and now September doesn’t seem much better.

  • Chose not to renew PS Plus last month. Was thinking about picking it up again this month if games were good. And… No.

  • I bought ps+ for the free games recently but regretting it badly now.

  • Surprise…. more garbage for ps4… You guys do realize that not everyone loves cheap indie games right??? First time I have been seriously disappointed with the lineup. There isn’t even a good ps3 game on there. at this point thinking of turning off my membership as the last few months has been trash especially for the ps4!!
