Upcoming PS4 System Update to v2.00 to Add Share Play, YouTube and More to Come

PS4 Logo

Since we first unveiled PlayStation 4 and its deep social capabilities, including the SHARE button, we’ve seen an outpouring of excitement from gamers. The PS Nation has rallied around a culture focused on sharing epic gaming moments through Live From PlayStation, interactive streaming, SHAREfactory, What’s New and Photo Mode in exclusive PS4 games like Infamous Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Let’s go a step further together. Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time. Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

We always want to hear your feedback and look forward to what you are most excited to experience together first Share Play when the feature comes to PS4 this fall. What will you co-op first with Share Play?

  • This is some concept art for ^ http://imgur.com/Db4X9iD

  • lot of whiners – for my $$, they’re doing pretty well and moving fast to add features – mp3 is coming – 3d is here
would love the dlna or some form of cast to implementation – i imagine it will come – certainly has the power for it – imo, miles above the x system

  • SharePlay and YouTube are cool additions, but where’s the promised DLNA??

  • Can’t wait for proper Youtube support. Any word on the “suspend” feature mentioned last year?

  • PLEASE EXPLAIN MORE ON THE PLAY SHARING, AND HOW IT WORKS EVEN THOUGH THEY DONT OWN IT?

IF I’m on my PS4, and want too play 1 of the “ELIGIBLE” games too SHARE PLAY, WHAT DOES THAT OTHER GAMER NEED TOO HAVE?

    Is it PS4, ONLY?

Is this STRICTLY, PS4 too PS4 Share Play?

Or PS4 too PS3 Share Play?

    THANK YOU

  • This is totally awesome.
To be perfectly honest though, I’ll be very happy once I have the ability to organize my library on the home page.

  • My Most wanted are
    1. Please Let me open new folders, i cant di that laggy **** anymore with 20 Icons…
    2. Put the picture folders to the upper List, if i didnt User it for a while i have to search that thing, could also go in There over the settings instead..
    3. Please allow recording my friends voice, Let himself agree or anything, but damn how stupid is it to talk to myself after recording a Video with my friend over the party?
    4. Background wouldnt be bad…
    5. Fix the sharebutton.. I think its the game that failes if my recording doesnt work how i wanted to, cant always Press square for the Video
    6. There are much more but These are the most Importen for me… Thanks for reading and maybe insert a few of them in 2.0 (all wouldnt be bad too, but tage it easy

  • SharePlay sounds like a great feature but will co-op gameplay that requires split screen in the game, change to full screen for both players? For Example Call of Duty 2 player Online Muliplayer or Extinction.

  • Don’t forget “”FLAC”” audio file plzzz

  • Tossing my vote in for improved BT headset support, not just third party (as referenced in post 96), but first party as well. I have a CECHYA-0076 (and 0075 as a backup) purchased a few years back that would be nice to use instead of a wired. With the new “virtual couch” mode forthcoming, it would be a decent compliment.

And one minor tweak, an option to turn off the controller LED when not charging (not just dim it) to further extend battery life.

  • Looks really fun, but if you’re gonna do this for Fetch you guys better show Eugene and Hank the same courtesy.

  • Lack of DLNA support is what is holding back from purchasing a PS4 at this time. Come
on you had it on the ps3 and I use it alot. And just read the XBOX One will be supporting DLNA in the near future.

  • DLNA and MP3 support needs to be on here. How the f is Sony one of the pioneers of DLNA yet they don’t even support it on their flagship device.

  • share play sounds awesome and i certainly can’t wait for the dedicated youtube app. but PLEASE can you make the the unit record more like a dvd so if I’m not recording when an epic moment happens(as i never am) i can hit the share button and have it record the last 5 minutes or up to 15 played. my box is full of recording with none of em being any good.

  • Interesting to read all the suggestions people are submitting. DLNA/MP3/CD support is something I can see why people are upset about yet I don’t need/want those features. Folders/UI customization is needed. PSN name change would be awesome. Improved chat sound quality is needed. The twitch/share UI feels outdated. Backgrounds. Etc, still real happy with my PS4 though.

  • where is the Vita news? seriously! All of us who owns one knows how amazing the system is. Why does Sony no care about it?

  • Awesome update! We like feature updates. Quality of quantity always! It’s nice when we aren’t seeing bricked consoles because of some rushed feature launch. Also, It says a lot about Sony to take the time to allow you to play a game without purchasing it–since the ENTIRE industry has been fighting this since online play came about.

The days of splitscreen are almost gone, this is splitscreen 2.0

    Save gas… have fun :)

  • Will this mean friend notifications are coming soon?

  • Finally the Youtube app. :)

  • What about actually FIXING the SHARE button first? Since it doesn’t always record the last 15 minutes played and will instead not record at all or it’ll be the first 15 minutes of playtime once the console turns on.

  • Still nothing about PSN ID name change. I care less about share play than I do being able to change the horrible PSN ID I’m currently stuck with, or streaming my personal digital content via DLNA. Call me old fashioned but, some of my best gaming memories, are ones of difficult games I have conquered ON MY OWN rather than have other people do it for me.

  • Bravo Sony – great to see the features you pushed before launch are finally coming.
A huge request, which a lot of the community has begged for are: having the friend notification when they appear online/offline (hoping it’s sooner than 2.0) – especially since “playing with friends” is a huge deal for the PS4, the home screen being customisable, such as folders or re-arranging icons, and the ability to pause/resume downloads. minor things but somewhat major also.

  • Sony please can you add support for MP3/DLNA, I am very impressed with the ps4 system and all its features, but I enjoyed using my ps3 to listen to music while playing games, but I find it hard to do the same with my ps4. Again I really admire everything the ps4 has to offer, but I would really appreciate it if the ps4 supported MP3/DLNA.

Ps. Why aren’t we seeing much out of the ps vita

  • Name Change! Wallpaper support! MP3 support!
Also would like to make it so I can choose who see’s me joining a party chat.

  • TWITCH/Ustream follow button!

  • It’s been mentioned a lot, but I’m going to mention it again.

We need options to manually sort our games and add them to folders. This should be the first thing that gets changed. Honestly I can’t believe that it hasn’t been changed yet since it’s been a major lacking feature since day one.

  • A question about this “couch coop but online”, will this only be available for selected games or will I be able to do this with any game of my choice e.g. FIFA 14?

  • all these cries for all these new features ( which yes probably should already be implemented ) are all great, but what really needs to be done is streamlining the interface, at the moment it is just a big long list of **** installed on the console, no organization at all. and the social engine should be fixed and debugged, after all for the last 3 or 4 updates posting trophies and some events to facebook and sometimes twitter does not work.

with this being a socializing console i say we should have themes to personalize our system and when a friend views out profile that theme/wallpaper is shown as it represents who we are and what we feel. there are tons of other ways to listen to music, watch movies or look at pictures.

it is time to fix and improve on what is already in place before the code gets to distorted and integrated it becomes near impossible to figure it out without breaking more things

  • Would there be a possibility that we can record the party chat using the ps4 recorder and capture cards? I remember somewhere there use to be a option on the 360 to have the party chat and game audio go out the tv and your headset at the same time. That would be a huge plus with me!

  • Please fix the UI, I need folders to organize my games and wallpaper support.

  • I am very happy that sony is concentrating more on the gaming experience than media playback at this stage. After all, we have brought GAMING consoles, media can come later. Things I would like to see are :-

    Friend Notifiactions,
    Full bluetooth headset support,
    Menu theming/better organisation

  • What about the ability to move the overlay of the ps4 camera while broadcasting to twitch? It gets in the way of most games stuck up on the top right corner.

  • So, where is the MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3 MP3

    Update?!

  • Hey, maybe we should create somewhat like a petition about DLNA and MP3 support.
Anybody know where it can be created? So people will sign it and Sony will see the number of people who are interested in such features!

  • 1. Customizable home screen
Particularly, I’d like to be able to hide apps I don’t use. Other visual and functional options (wallpapers, etc.) will be nice.

    2. Mp3s (beyond system support for the format)
Listen to my own music no matter what game I am playing. (Idea: game music reduced, game speech enhanced so it isn’t drowned out by my own music).

    3. Share Play
    What I understand:
“invite a friend to join your game” = local co-op (e.g. Call of Duty: Ghosts)
“assist a friend” = local solo (e.g. just about any game)

Will all “couch” modes can be used through Share Play? They would be playable if we were on the same couch.
    For example:
Can I hand over my controller so my friend can play online multi-player? (e.g. Assassin’s Creed’s online multi-player)
If a game allows 2 players on one system to connect to online multi-player, will this work with Share Play? aka Combo co-op? (e.g. Borderlands 2)

    4. And playing PS1, PS2, PS3 games will also be nice. Since PS3 games are on Blu-ray, it would be relatively simple to have a download and play of the game using a disc check feature without needing to read game off the disc.

  • When could we expect an update to customize the main menu somewhat like the ps3 had? If there will be at all?

  • How many people can participate in the couch co op? Is it just 2 or can it be 4 for games like Sports Friends?

  • Scott McCarthy

Please Look after Playstation Vita too.

    – Allow us to use multiple acounts (usa, eur, jap) on Vita and Vita TV
    – Unlock 3G version for use another 3g carrier
    – More games

  • When are we going to be able to change screen names without making a new account

  • Please bring the Sony 4K Video Unlimited service to PS4!!

  • You’ll probably never read this, but we’d like it if when we stream that our viewers can hear people in our party chat as well. Please add it, make streaming and streams more enjoyable to watch and listen.

  • Hi! Thank you for being consistent with the PS4 updates! Keep it up!

A really important feature both the PS3/PS4 need is to organize content, the PS4 should allow you to arrange your icons in anyway you want and “lock” them in (also folders, as was mentioned before) but the PS3 really needs an option to let you view your games alphabetically please! It’s a small yet amazing thing you can do for both systems!

I’m really excited for Share Play, it’s a revolutionary step in gaming, BRAVO!!

(P.S. The option for the PS4 to turn off after the game is done downloading is also a must! :) I really enjoy this setting on my PS3)

  • I am curious about the Youtube application coming to the ps4, and will it correlate with the SHAREfactory so I could edit and add different sounds and intros to my video then upload? Because I don’t want to have to go buy a 200$ capture card for this, I would rather it be an all in one package. TY

  • I see that alot of you talking about you want more game centric feature on your ps4 updates and I also see that alot of want more media tuned updates.. well I as the consumer want BOTH.. why can’t I be able to listen to my favorite tunes while playing NFS Rivals, or when the latest version of NBA 2K is released why should I be prohibited from fully customizing the arena music just like I was able to do on the 360 and PS3.. some of you people say that those or better yet have the option to stream ot upload my own personal videos or music files on to my 500gb hard drive.. alot of you people say options like that doesn’t matter but it truly does because it the little intangibles that most of took for granted on the last gen consoles is what we’re truly missing.. I also would like to posses the option to be in the middle of a game and switch to netflix, watch one of my favorite episodes of what show that I’m into at the time or.. go to a web site real quick and then return to the game that I was playing at the very same point where I left off??

  • SERIOUSLY!?!?… we just got the ability to play games FOR FREE with friends without downloads and all everyone is talking about is DLNA support and External HDD (What is so special with external hard drives?… what is wrong with upgrading your internal one?)

  • I spent 399.99 of my hard earned money.. for a console that’s supposed much more advanced than it’s last gen counterpart but yet it has one 3rd of it’s features.. I know that there are a lot of games that are supposed to be coming out soon, and I understand that they’re working on the new technology for this system.. however not having media playback whether its video or mp3 format is egregious on sony’s behalf.. I’m not much of an indie gamer. Resogun is pretty cool.. and fez grasp my attention no longer than 5-10 minutes at a time so why shouldn’t I be able to upload to some of my favorite music & videos on my 400.00 plus dollar (after taxes) console.. is that too much to ask for?

  • dlna and external hard drive, and uploading music and media via flash is very important.. it is essential to having those for people who enjoy listening to music while playing game without having to use a second device or having to pay 9.99 a month for a music that you already own.. and video play back is good for those who might want to upload they’re own personal video or movies without having to use netflix.. don’t get me wrong netflix is good.. I have a subscription with them but sometimes I might want to watch something that netflix doesn’t have. couch Co-Op sounds fine but that’s still no reason for sony to deprive of us of Local media playback .

  • Shareplay sounds like an awesome feature. There have been so many times when my brothers and I (who live in different hemispheres) don’t get a game because it doesn’t have online co-op. It is great that now we have another way to play. I only hope that lag between us won’t be too bad, but it never was on the PS3 so I have faith.

However, to add to the cacophony, we REALLY need DLNA, even before YouTube. I used to brag to everybody how great my PS3 was when watching videos and listening t music and now I barely turn it on. The games have been slow in coming (though that is about to change in the next few months).

Please, PLEASE, add DLNA in v2.0 so I can stop sitting at my desk to watch my movies.

  • that’s like buying a smart phone and then discovering that you are forced to buy music that you already own all over again from a 3rd party.

  • it really doesn’t matter to me about the volume of the gaming library.. I still need my music and videos.. that was an essential part of my gaming experience.. it was the total package..
