Upcoming PS4 System Update to v2.00 to Add Share Play, YouTube and More to Come

PS4 Logo

Since we first unveiled PlayStation 4 and its deep social capabilities, including the SHARE button, we’ve seen an outpouring of excitement from gamers. The PS Nation has rallied around a culture focused on sharing epic gaming moments through Live From PlayStation, interactive streaming, SHAREfactory, What’s New and Photo Mode in exclusive PS4 games like Infamous Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Let’s go a step further together. Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time. Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

We always want to hear your feedback and look forward to what you are most excited to experience together first Share Play when the feature comes to PS4 this fall. What will you co-op first with Share Play?

  • Scott,

Here is the problem that needs to be cleared up, a lot of people think the North America PlayStation team are just middle men/women for SCEA Japan. Basically we think the NA Team has little input on features that gets placed into Firmware updates. Then, you pass on the features ( your team and not us ) thinks what we need and then JAPAN does what they want.

SCEA Japan doesn’t give two poops what we think. They only think of the bottom line and what effects it and will only make a change when public opinion is not in there favor. Because if they did “hear us” these simple features would have been in system at Launch.

Prime example, it took you 7 months to enable Playback of Blu-ray 3D, 7 months just for that! What can we expect for the UI, 2 or 3 years?

“Sony asks for feedback all the time” Funny statement, in over 30 years of buying Sony products I have NEVER been asked for feedback. I have owned every Sony PS and have not seen or heard of a single poll or feedback from Sony.

So forgive me if I am skeptical when Playstation NA says, well anything.

  • your right about that.. but at the same time.. we can’t just sit here, stand idle, and do nothing..

  • that’s what these forums, and blogs are for.. so people can voice they’re opinion no matter how major or minute that opinion can be.

  • sometimes I feel like I brought a 400.00 paper weight.. I don’t feel totally satisfied without mp3 playback.. when I’m don’t with a game I feel like that’s it.. no other options.. I used to play a couple of games then switch to my mp3 files and watch cool graphics from the globe. but that’s gone.. and I don’t know if we’ll ever see it again or if we do whether it’s going to be anytime soon.

  • My PS4 is gathering dust and getting close to the sell pile. Without DLNA streaming, I can’t access my big investment into digital content. So unless they commit soon, I may as well get a Xbox One, which will support DLNA in a defined timeframe.

I am not buying any PS4 content or accessories until this is confirmed, so nothing to hold me back from switching. I need to keep the PS3 for the older games anyway, as no way I will pay again for old games to access via streaming.

Really quite disappointed, and most PS fans I know feel the same, and unless this is fixed soon, this may be the start of another big Sony decline.

    DLNA
    Remote Control support

  • Thanks Sony!
You guys have a little slow of a pace when adding new features.
Though you do come around to getting them done, so thanks for that, I somewhat understand how difficult it can be to maintain and develop new features while sticking to a schedule and meeting the public demand.

    Keep it up!

  • Hi, I’m glad there is new update in the future v2. But I’m really excited about PlayStation Home for Ps4. also mp3 support and DLNA for ps4

  • Why can’t we have Playstation classics yet? I miss playing the games I grew up on. I bought my ps4 1 week ago and I love some of the new games but I’m very disappointed so far with what I can and can’t do. The ps4 is the most powerful console but I can’t even change the background color. Why is it so hard to include software and features that are on other Sony products such as the vita and ps3? Please explain this to me.

  • small thing but hope 2.0 allows us to switch off the controller light. I know we can dim it since version 1.70 but OFF would be better and save battery.

  • Are there any non-social features coming? I realise that Sony wants to build loyalty among its customers by giving them the tools to build a community, but there are also plenty of people for whom the ‘Share’ button on the controller is utterly useless, and just want to play.

  • Someone mentioned suspend/resume–after Share Play this will be the final feature I expected the PS4 to have based on what was presented in Feb 2013.

  • Please, please, please bring the suspend resume feature to the ps4 in this 2.00 firmware update.

  • Yeah and still I can’t watch YouTube on a app from my playstation dashboard

  • Honestly, I’ve got two external 2TB hard drives just sitting here doing nothing. Let me be able to use these external hard drives… the dinky 500GB is nearly full and I’m not going out to buy a new HD because I just spent $500+ dollars on PS4 and everything I have for it… Let me be able to not only save games to the hard drive, but install the damn discs there…Ik Ik piracy… Your smart, you’ll find a way…

We want to keep you guys up to date! This fall isn’t THAT far is it?!”

Fall Starts on September 23 and ends on December 21st. So there is a few months of a time frame away for “Fall”. So at least a month away, not that far, but not that close either.

  • Backwards compatibility!

  • So far, I’d Share Play Watch Dogs and Blue Estate

  • Very cool! Share Play is definitely something I was looking forward to.
That said, I will say again something I’ve already mentioned before that I want to see: The ability to delete useless apps. I am speaking primarily of sharefactory, but there are others on there, too. These should be OPTIONAL – ie download them if you want them. I have absolutely zero interest in ever posting anything to twitch, youtube or any other service. These apps are just taking up space on my hard drive, and will probably just continue to increase in size as you force us to download updates to them.

  • Error CE-35460-8 Do not read The Walking Dead bluray season 1 version europe (spain)

so you can investigate and fix
    thank you

  • Thanks for YouTube coming. I won’t have my PS4 until Sept 9th. Can you download wallpapers and themes from the psn store to the PS4 yet? If not Sony can I get that.

  • How’s that possible?………anyway this is some amazing stuff.I wonder if its mandatory for all games or if devs will be the ones who will choose to use it or not.

  • Can we PLEASE get notifications for when our friends come online? It really can’t be that difficult to at least add that as a notification option!

  • This is really quite great! I think this is definitely taking the console gaming experience in the right direction. I love what the PS4 is offering and I can’t wait to try these features out.

I won’t lie, I’m also waiting for the other features most people are talking about, especially media playback, external HDD use, dashboard management, dynamic backgrounds, etc., but all of this other stuff is bonus content that I wasn’t even expecting. So, yeah, I’m psyched!

I’m selling my launch system, but it’s only so that I can get my paws on that sweet, sweet white PS4 coming out September 9th!

  • YouTube? It’s about time. Share Play, pretty cool. But what about what EVERYONE is asking for?

    1. Multimedia features – DLNA, audio/video playback. How about at least a PLEX app? X1 is now getting this too.
    2. User Interface improvements – a mess of games in a ribbon? Come on. Where are Wallpapers, Themes, favorites, etc.
    3. Suspend/Resume to include game state – this was promised over a year ago and X1 has it.
    4. Notification for select friends sign-on.
    5. Web Browser improvements.

This is PS3’s no-cross-game-voice-chat all over again. The System Updates are coming slow and not what the Community is asking for over and over. Not even a response to us about these hugely requested features. This is unacceptable, your competition is listening and you are not.

  • Please please give features to the PS4 that the PS3 had…
Surely its easier to develop for than the Cell right?
Thats what you said about the new hardware last year.
Where are the price reductions on non physical software?
Nowhere….Just like the record industry did with CD pricing for YEARS.

But seriously Sony, just add the basics. DLNA, MP3 and the features you showed a YEAR ago….

And to those people(and there are so many who want the above features) who say Playstations are
just for gaming. Do some research and look at what every Sony console has been able to do regarding media.

  • @Scott McCarthy

I know this has been done to death, and sorry for others not being reasonable and straight up rude about things.

Please take a look at this thread on the PlayStation Forums. This has a LOT of information of what everyone is looking for to be added to the PlayStation 4.

    http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-General/PS4-Update-Wishlist-What-do-you-want-to-see/td-p/42442285

  • Thanks PS team. I’m looking forward to the update. Can we get an option to condense the video channels, to only installed applications ? In addition, might I suggest folliwing Microsoft’s lead and include mkv file support for media playback? Fall is gonna be sweet.

  • Bug fixes and performance issues with Remote Play needs to happen. Always be improving Remote Play.

  • So in the future you can essentially “borrow” your friends games with share play? Would you play under their name or yours?

  • Can we please get external hard drive video playback please?

  • Can we please watch all Twitch streams?

  • Share sounds very cool – Is it dependent on a friend owning the game though? You guys should have lobbies that people can drop into. Not everyone has a ton of friends.

=== Super disillusioned by the lack of response to community feedback regarding CDs, MP3s etc etc etc.

X1 might be the way to go after all… sigh ======

  • Ive been so disapointed with sony the last few weeks, the lack of a media player on the ps4, the vita isnt getting any updates except to stop people from installing jailbreak software, and the special edition ps4s leave so much to desire. I am a huge fan, I have 2 ps2, a psp, 2 vita, a ps4 and a sony tablet, but its been almost a year and still no media player. but I am sad to say even though I dont like call of duty, but man the special edition xbone looks great, and I have been getting so many great games I just wish I could say sony was doing the same.

  • PLEASE update the twitch app so we can move the broadcast location display(camera) to where ever we want. Take it out of the top right corner. It gets in the way of most games while broadcasting….

  • What about the notification feature we had on the ps3 where we could see when a friend go online? I kind of miss that feature, it made it easier to know when I could invite a friend into my party.

  • Hi there,

This blog is about the new system update v2.00, which is absolutely good, but it still misses the fundamental features.
It is absolutely ridiculous that the ”old gen features” like dlna, media playback (mp3), customization (themes, wallpapers and especially order folders!) and such still isn’t available on the PS4.

What is the problem for Sony to make this tiny features possible?? Especially when i just read 6 pages of customer reactions about these missing features (dlna, media playback, customization).

Sony speaks about interaction and listening to feedback from their community. Well? Come on, do something already? Sony is all about social things… the customers are trying to interact with you sony.. please respond..

  • SharePlay is a great feature, but I think it would be more important to fix the remaining issues left on the current software version.
First, if you got more than 600 friends in your friendlist, it does take years to load them, to invite them to games or to write them a message. But even more important is the headset compatibility with fully wireless headsets, like the Turtle Beach PX4 / PX51.
Users have to connect a cable to their controller to use the microphone, although it is possible to use it without on the PC.
Another great feature would be recording or streaming party voice chat, which is currently not possible because of privacy restrictions.
Isn’t it possible to send anyone in the party a answer like “I would like to record/stream this party, is that ok for you”, which every member of the party has to confirm with “yes” ?

    Thank you for your attention,

    curryking

  • PS2 games on Vita and PS4.

  • So, about the one-hour Share Play limit, here’s my POV:

People who have PlayStation Plus and both have a copy of the game in question NEED to be able to play together without a time limit. There is no issue with this, and some games like the “Tales Of” series and “Child of Light” absolutely benefit from this feature.

  • This sounds like it will be a great way to help friends who have the console but not the money for games.

One thing I would like is if audio is set to go through your USB headset, that it can still go out through your HDMI connector. That is important for people who may want to capture footage via a capture card.

  • look, if they focus on media first, gaming second…. they would be xbox and that would lead to sales dropping just like xbox one… this feature is gonna be great as well as the youtube feature… good job sony

  • About the PS Vita and how to make it better.
1-Allow multiple PSN accounts per Vita like on the PS4.
    2-Memory Cards for cheap.
    3-Built-in memory.

  • will PS3 players be allowed to share play with PS4 players?

  • I’ll be Honest, i’ve been a Sony fan for a long time, i did buy the Xbox 360 to play with friends, i got Black Ops for the 360 (first and last game i bought for it) once my friends were done with that game i never touched the Xbox again. the one thing i am big on is DLNA/ multimedia, yes this may be a gaming system, but we gamers are Multimedia whore’s, we love/need all things entertainment, YouTube anyone? how was YouTube not launched with the PS4? anyway… my reason for posting here is i have been seriously considering buying an Xbox One strictly for the fact that they will support DLNA/Multimedia, it’s a sad day when i have to buy an Xbox just for that reason, and to never play a game on it. (waiting for V2.0 before i actually buy an Xbox one, hoping Sony will not be complete morons and actually add the features we all want)

PS. it’s also an extremely sad day when my Wii U supports an external HDD yet the powerful/almighty PS4 does not.

  • i think this is awesome, but Sony still have a lot to add e.g media support and external hard drives …. but stop complaining im sure sony will add these features soon … is a gaming console … they are more focused on the gaming at the moment, how ever these features should of been there for release.

  • I really hope we have the choice to opt out of the intrusive ‘real name search’…!

  • Why can’t Sony give all the features people want, i mean, i love my PS4 to play games but it lacks the other stuff that i did on the PS3. Stop trying to sell Music Unlimited, which isn’t even available im my country, and let people listen to music and watch their videos. And let us customize our PS, be switching themes and being able to choose the controller color so as the console light color.

  • I have a feeling the MP3/DNLA debacle on the PS4 is going to end up like the “Cross-Game Chat” request on the PS3.
It’ll be requested, rumored, and even said to be “in the works” by Sony, but in the end it will just never materialize.

  • @295 (xInfuzeModz): Yes it’s a video game console, but this is 2014, where there are a certain number of basics any shiny box worth its weight should be able to perform when connected to your TV and stereo.

All Sony consoles, even going back to the PlayStation 1 in 1995, have been able to play music CD’s. Now I don’t expect that to happen, but mp3? YES.

It’s obvious that Sony sees the PlayStation as more than just simply a game player based on all of the video and audio apps they’ve added, so why not add the ONE THING THAT MAKES THE MOST SENSE TO OWNERS? That which is the ability to play their own collection of music, much of it purchased from Sony in the first place.

  • I would want to see Sony work on letting people play their music while playing their video games. I know Sony can do it and I hope they could, as much I like game soundtracks n’ all but I do like to listen to my music at times while playing a good game. Anyone agree?
