Upcoming PS4 System Update to v2.00 to Add Share Play, YouTube and More to Come

PS4 Logo

Since we first unveiled PlayStation 4 and its deep social capabilities, including the SHARE button, we’ve seen an outpouring of excitement from gamers. The PS Nation has rallied around a culture focused on sharing epic gaming moments through Live From PlayStation, interactive streaming, SHAREfactory, What’s New and Photo Mode in exclusive PS4 games like Infamous Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Let’s go a step further together. Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time. Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

We always want to hear your feedback and look forward to what you are most excited to experience together first Share Play when the feature comes to PS4 this fall. What will you co-op first with Share Play?

  • Cool feature. I’m not sure about the fixation on DLNA or audio/video formats. I don’t use any of my consoles for that stuff. I use them to play games, but do enjoy watching my vudu movies or using Amazon Prime on them.

I do hope that some sort of better UI organization is in the works with this update as well as external storage support. The PS3 should have had support for external storage, that was a huge oversight and disappointment. I’m hoping that Sony has gotten over their mindset of having to have game data on lockdown (or whatever their issue was with not wanting to allow us to store or even play our games from a connected HDD/thumbstick).

I don’t usually like to play the “well so-and-so has this, or does this better” game, but Microsoft actually got it right with their recent update to allow for external storage device(s). You can simply move files to and from, you can choose where a game gets downloaded/installed to, and play games that are on the external with ease. That kind of flexibility and user friendliness should be a goal as Sony [hopefully] moves forward on external storage support.

  • The share play feature is really nice for friends that want to try out games with you, without coming by.
But i think that the External HDD support really is neccesary for some people.
    Like me xD.
But i hope that the HDD support is coming so… SONY PLEASE HDD SUPPORT!
And themes and/or backgrounds is nice if thats coming too.
    Please Sony read this.
    Greetings!

  • Ah ps fans such hypocrites i remember when microsoft said they had a family sharing plan and you fanoys did nothing but dog them saying it was a glorified demo and thats is exactly what this share and play is 2 hrs for one game is misleading and they need to start pumping updates out faster and put **** in them we actually care about …

  • Still waiting for a name change feature….hopefully I won’t die before that gets here. You say you need demand. How much demand? I have no problem finding many pages loaded with request on the feature.

  • Where are all these so called people wanting these features eh?

As far as I and my mates go, we want the more immediate and more often used features added – like someone else mentioned here.

    Online privacy settings.
    Folders
    PS Button responses to:-
Friends online notification; instant panel with invite to game or chat or exit back to game
Trophy Notifications; instant panel with info and option to expand to full trophy browsing or exit back to game
    External HDD support
    MP3
    DNLA

These items are bread and butter daily use.

Sony you have it wrong. These new “high on the list” touted features are useful but frankly I couldn’t give a rats ultimately whether I have them or not. What I’ve listed above though are far more useful and sort after features that the gaming community (at least as I perceive it) really wants and right now.

    IMHO

  • any word if this will work with the up coming diablo 3 game for ps4?

  • Seriously people calm down and let them work without having to hear you complain every time they announce an update. Sony’s heard it and they’re working on a lot of it. While not officially confirmed an anonymous Sony mob has announced that mp3 support is coming this holiday season and DLNA will be arriving next year. Keep in mind they’ve said there are more features to 2.00 then what they’ve already announced and various multimedia file support, including mp3, is probably among them.

As for most of the other stuff people are harping about they’re working on a lot of it but frankly from a dev point of view most are low priorities. Stuff like game folders and menu customization are nice but they aren’t gonna drastically effect the user experience. The same goes for various notifications and sorting options. Large external HD support isn’t gonna happen til there is some native multimedia support and even then don’t expect to ever be able to put games/apps on them. More bluetooth headset support is likely coming but Sony put the jack in the DS4 for a reason. In short you’re not likely to see a lot of these low priorities til they make good on the big stuff they promised before launch which Share Play is among.

  • all i have been waiting for since xmas is DLNA support / ext HDD (2tb) support

  • Probably too late to get a response but I was wondering how many players the virtual couch stuff will work. Like could you play a 4 player offline coop game or does it only work with two players?

  • Okay guys, come on. First thing y’all need to deliver is the update to allow the use of bluetooth headsets. It was coming at one point, have y’all given up? After that, get an official twitch app. Let us watch streams and archives from non ps4 sources. Make external drive support the cherry on top.

  • You guys really need to add
-ability to hear party chat when sharing videos
    -add ability to pause downloads
    -add folders
-notify when friends get on and off
-fix up chat audio in the party to make it better my old xbox 360 had good quality
    -add DLNA support
    -add media playback
-i don’t know why but the ps4 tells me voice features cannot be used with my friends which means i have to leave the party and join back
-add more titles to ps now and make them more controller to screen responsive

I hope someone from sony sees this because i love my ps4 and have played both ps1 and 2 switched to xbox 360 and then back to ps4

I also love how you guys made share factory which is awesome and love the ability to stream and watch streamers. Lets play is also awesome and cant wait to try it out . I love the exclusives as well just want GT7 and GoW announced

  • Hey Sony! Microsoft is doing it first… http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/15/more-details-on-upcoming-xbox-one-updates. This makes trading in the PS4 for a One a little more appealing. You may have got my $400 Sony… but Microsoft may have swayed my loyalty.

  • Needs:

    – Bluetooth Headphone Support (I rather use my surround sound over headphones)
    – Better chat voice quality, ultra sensitive mics are making me not want to talk to people.
    – Sign in on/off notifications for “Favorite” friends
    – Smoother party/game invite system
    – Ability to pause/resume downloads
    – Improved UI, Sortable Library (including a toggle to able to hide games you delete)
    – Comments in News Feed
    – Media Stream
    – Voice Commands. What ever happened to “Playstation Save Video” and the other commands? They silently disappeared. Not like they worked anyways.

    Wants:

    – Live TV via internet
    – Buy games online, system auto downloads it on standby so it be ready when I get to it
    – Monthly Firmware Updates
    – Video chat while playing with someone directly. Using the same broadcast “video box” in a corner while gaming.
    – Game DVRs to be “cloud accessible”

    Improve:
    – PS Gold Headset, a retractable boom mic probably would make it great. Voice quality is muffled and doesn’t really filter out noise
    – Playstation Camera’s mics need a sensitivity option + video chats
    – Playstation Live. See who’s broadcasting, follow/unfollow from feed
    – Web Browser.. it sucks.

  • I know by page 7, it’s just a wall of text, but I thought I’d add my 2 cents anyhow…

When I bought my PS3, it was partly because I enjoyed the PSOne and PS2, but also because it was going to be the center of my entertainment center.

I could use my PS3 for games, watch some things on YouTube, (along with Netflix and Amazon), as well as listen to music on it, and even every once-in-a-while show some pictures to my friends.

Literally, the PS3 was a hub for me. I have a HD TV, my PS3, and surround sound. No need for a separate DVD/Blu Ray player, no extra MP3 or any other audio player… my PS3 could do it all.

When I think of PS4, I think, ok, it can do everything my PS3 could do + it should be able to do even more.

I am not a social media person. I don’t blame PS4 for trying to more incorporate that, however I think it should be in addition to everything the PS3 can do. I feel like there is no way the PS4 went through focus groups. I see pages and pages of people here upset how much the PS4, so far, has been a step backwards.

  • OK Shareplay sounds like a cool feature but please keep working on MP3 and Video support, I used it a lot on my PS3 and that’s a feature i really miss on my PS4…
And I don’t know if technically possible but is there a way to “force” 3D TV? My TV is 3D Capable but the receiver is last gen (HDMI 1.3) and the PS3 and PS4 are not detecting it through it… I hooked my PS3 directly to my TV through HDMI and used Optical cable to have the sound play through my receiver, but I cant do that with my PS4, so no 3D Movies and 3D gaming possible with DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD (also not possible with optical on PS3)… If there is a possibility (like sending a SBS signal, which any 3D TV can convert to 3D) please look into implementing it in future updates…

  • I heard rumors that the new firmware update 2.0 will bring static / dynamic themes like PS3 has to PS4. Is this true?
Keep up the awesome job Playstation!
P.S. any chance bringing external HDD support to the PS4?

  • I just bought a ps4 the other day. I love the controller but feel like the software is in early stages of beta. I don’t understand the endless list of applications either. Oh and am I just missing it or is the ps4 missing an app for Facebook or Twitter ?

  • Bought the PS4 and a couple games 8 months ago because I’ve been loyal to the PlayStation brand for a long time. Was pretty irritated that DLNA was not included at launch (Looks like I’m not the only one). So it’s been collecting dust for a while as I’ve decided to not invest anymore in the PS4 until DLNA is added.

BTW, doing it right would mean launching with basic features that are common to generally all consumer electronics devices released in the last 4 years. Seriously, DLNA is packaged in everything!

    – A better second screen interface would be nice. Tried it on my phone, all the swipe gestures are backwards. Use the touch screen as a touch screen or a mouse. Not a D-Pad
    – Some way to get my ps1 and ps2 games into the ps4 library.

  • You had me at Youtube app :)

  • PORQ NO SACAN UNA ACTUALIZACION PARA PARA PODER VER DVD Y REPRODUCIR CD MP3 EN LA PS4????? ESPERO SU RESPUETA!!!!!!!!!!! PROVE Y NO SE PUEDE!!!!!!! HAGAN ESTA ACTUALIZACION YAAAAAAAA

  • I am not sure if I like this feature, for example if I am playing FIFA15 online and I am winning a game, that means the other player can let his friend who is maybe “better” or “more experienced” take control of the game and perhaps win for him??? that is not fair if that is the case

  • What about the flash drive plugin

  • Now I´m Kinda confused, and sorry to be a pain if someone already asked/answered, but with the Share play, are we gonna be able to play the game online with our friends even though we don´t have the game? or onli coaching like if we upload the video to youtube but in real time???

  • I’m very interested in a very little feature which is basically the total amount of time spent playing any of our library games.

I would appreciate very much if you can confirm first this is the system update 2.0 or in the upcoming roadmap.
And If not, at least, know which is the drawback, because other platforms like Steam already provides this.
For us the players, I really think it is very useful (and very easy to implement).

I’m delighted with the ton of features coming on this update, so first of all, thank you guys.

  • there was a guy at #37 i dont remimber his name but he said 100% of what i so mad about the dlns n mp3 not being in will effect wwe game players so bad we use the mp3 feature in ordewr to even play the game when u make wrestlers u give them intro music whitout that i am really thinkin of just buying the ps3 version of the game because i wont play the game all f* up like that no VIDEO OR MP3 UPDATE BEFORE oct 28 than i know were ill be at home playin my old ps3 .so sad at sony for this news

  • How does Share Play works? Via stream to the other friend? Does he have to download the game? Can’t imagine how it works with the ****** upload rates you get in Germany.

  • YES! I am super excited about this, now I can play with my friends around the globe. I have a few in diff countries I could share with I am picking up a second PS4 (Destiny Bundle). What I am wondering is it a 60 minute time limited per day … or when the 60 minutes are up, can you re-share with the same player for another 60 minutes? an to that end Can we just get unlimited Share Play?

  • I am in total agreement with #324. Every other current gen system has a play log type app or feature in the UI that allows to view logged time per game. All Nintendo systems, XB1, and Steam. PS4 does not currently have this and PSN doesn’t allow for tracking using services such as Raptr. This is a small feature but something that is actually important to me, as well as many other gamers. Can we have a verification that this is in the works??

  • 327 why do you need a play log type? you should know what you have been playing like its your system. why do you need a Play log to tell you what you all did.

  • It’s a fun statistic. I like knowing how long I’ve played a game for. It’s a popular feature, and as I said it’s on every system but Sony ones.

They could hide it in the library as a separate app so it would be optional.

  • Hi Mr. McCarthy,

It would be possible to get some feedback on comment 324? Or… if this is this is not the right forum, to point me the right one?

    Thanks!

  • Please add MP4 support in some way, whether external HDD or DLNA, this is the only feature stopping me from buying my PS4.

  • I am aware this post is a few days old, but I would like to leave a request to make PS4 CD compatible and possibly allow me to download my music to my Hard Drive. If playstaion 1, 2, and 3 are all capable of reading CDs why shouldn’t Ps4? Otherwise I agree with all the other suggested updates and I am sure you have them all listed in priority.

  • I’m gonna go out on a limb and say people don’t reallllllyyyyy even care about the Whole MP3 thing, its just because its not here and it was on the ps3 that makes it seem like a big deal, how would you want mp3 over shareplay, come on now.
You guys are just being difficult.

  • Seriously just what the hell are they doing over at Sony HQ?
Sony should of been working over time to get the PS4 up to the PS3 standards at the very least ASAP!!!

Seriously Sony get your fingers out your “£%$£”! and update the PS4! i want folders, external storage, customizable themes, i want usb media playback! MKV would be awesome but i doubt it with Sony. Don’t get me wrong Shareplay is an amazing feature but we need the basic stuff first then the new stuff.(if you could do them both at the same time then it would be awesome)

  • All of these features are great but are you going to add personalization on the home? Or music? And it would be cool if you guys added the who just got online feature from ps3!

  • Don’t you just love it ,it like a really good tv series where you get feed a little at a time and you can hardly wait for the the next week to see what you gonna get. the possibilities are endless, I get moist just thinking about it Hoyaa

  • So i can trade in my Ps3 how about;
    Dlna support
    External hard drive support
    Browser zoom like Ps3
Flash Player support ( It’s far from dead no matter what they say )
It Seriously can’t be that hard.

  • An option to delete Video Unlimited & Music Unlimited
These i believe to be the reason for some of the Players requests being so long coming. Lets see if the NO competition clause that is more than likely in their contract, is for 1 or 2 years.
That said the option to Delete the Foxtel App would also be good.
Maybe update your Slogan as well.
    NOT FOR THE PLAYER
    BUT FOR THE MONEY.

  • Where are the themes? :/ I want to customise it and Blue is my least favourite colour =(

  • What is DLNA?

  • I am still in mild disbelief that a year down the line we can’t watch our own films on a PS4 or play music and photos?? I understand all the ‘It’s all about games” rubbish, but if you’re soft enough in the head to believe that you need help.

PS4 has been gutting for me, i want to love it, but i can’t. I still rely on a PS3 to play films and actually do what i want to do. PS4 is self-crippling and i am still amazed that it sells so well with such an Achilles heel. Had i known when i bought it that my 6 year old console was superior, i would have kept the money.

    Get a grip Sony.

  • I wouldn’t think of it as a coincidence if this came out on the same day or shortly after the release of Destiny…Or when PS2 comes out either.

  • 1/ DLNA with MP4/MKV support please
2/ Support for new Sony BT headsets.

My Sony TV and PS3 can handle the above, why can’t PS4 do it?

  • So the more to come only means themes after all….pff

  • Hello y all and Sony I really like ps4 but all I need is friends notification mp3/usb support I like to change wallpaper so theme and change colours on controller

  • Hi I want Sony to add pause and resume in download list and to be able to resume after turning off the ps4 and also add Iran in your countries supports and add Persian language.
It was better if Sony establish some agency in our country
    thanks for being awesome.
can Sony do what I’ve said?(I know Sony can do them but I wanna be sure)

  • The two thing I really want are 1.) Custom wallpaper (Just like the PS3) and 2. Bluetooth headset support (like the PS3).

  • Music/Video/Photo support.
    Demos
    Apps. Apps. Apps.

  • Would love to be able to upload pictures, music etc through USB support. PS3 allowed it. Loved putting pic on my ps3 and also used picture files from USB stick to add soccer jersey logos in my favorite game pro evolution soccer. Please add this USB support feature to ps4 so we can upload pictures, music etc like on ps3.
