Upcoming PS4 System Update to v2.00 to Add Share Play, YouTube and More to Come

PS4 Logo

Since we first unveiled PlayStation 4 and its deep social capabilities, including the SHARE button, we’ve seen an outpouring of excitement from gamers. The PS Nation has rallied around a culture focused on sharing epic gaming moments through Live From PlayStation, interactive streaming, SHAREfactory, What’s New and Photo Mode in exclusive PS4 games like Infamous Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Let’s go a step further together. Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time. Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

We always want to hear your feedback and look forward to what you are most excited to experience together first Share Play when the feature comes to PS4 this fall. What will you co-op first with Share Play?

The majority of the people want these features, they should be on top of your list for crying out loud. It doesn’t make any sense.

  • I have to say, right now, I like the PS3 more than the PS4. The four is like a paperweight to me right now.

  • @djxtc25 I understand man, but you can’t say you bought the system for those features as they weren’t marketed as having them. You bought the system assuming they’d have them because the last one did. People who want those types of things may walk, but people who want to play games will stay, imo.

Sony a bunch of social crap

  • @djxtc25 if you have a WiFi enabled smart TV you don’t need the PS4 to do any of the dnla/mp3/video.
Obviously not suggesting you go buy one but if you have one its an option.

  • Music player and custom in game playlists!!! Why is this such an issue? You can allow people to play games across the world via the internet, but you can’t get music to play on a modern machine.

  • No local media support, no money from my wallet. Simple.

  • Way too many people constantly complaining on this blog lately. This is a freaking amazing update and we should all be excited! Now I’ll be able to play local co-op only games like Octodad with my friends who live states away from me. How cool is that! Really can’t wait to check this out.

You guys had a great showing at Gamescom today. Lots of cool AAA games and some really unique stuff on the indie front. Keep it up!

  • HBO Go? Showtime Anytime?

  • @frankmagnt well according to what @steadydecline has said, looks like if Sony doesn’t cough up the same support for media files Xbox is by November, I’ll just trade in my PS4 for an XBOX one (never thought I’d say that either. I’ve been a long time supporter of Playstation).

  • how about skype? I mean look at xbox one, they can use the kinect camera for other things not only for games but also for other things like skype video calls, gesture control, advance voice command….so far you can only use ps4 camera to just dance 4, sign in face recognition and playroom….we wanted to chat with our friends via ps4….Sometimes I don’t get use my ps4 camera because it doesn’t offer video chat like skype or yahoo messenger….Sony do something about this and I am sure more people will buy a ps4 camera if you could use ps4 in other things!

  • Please update ps4 so it can work with more bluetooth headsets (mono and stereo)!!! (jabra etc.)

  • I would really like an update that gives you a notification when a friend comes online or goes offline. It’s just something that’s bugged me that we don’t have yet and how we should! But I’m very excited for this upcoming system update!

  • In Order of Important to me at the time writing this.

    – Record everyone’s Voice in Party Chat when recording/streaming.

    – Suspend/Resume

    – Standalone viewing YouTube & Twitch App

    – I want to see more Filter options for Trophies and options like the PS3 to hide trophies you rather shamed of showing or weren’t important.

    – Filter “What’s New” to see what’s important to you the gamer. I want to only see PSN Friends Pictures/Videos they upload. I also only want to see Gold and Platinum Trophies in What’s new in the list. We all known Bronze isn’t that important for a status post. More filters so It only loads the things a gamer want to see each time they come to What’s New.

    – You Also need to use “What’s New” for new PlayStation Blog Posts so you as a company can spread news quicker to your followers. That would have to be in a filter as well because not everyone would want to see that stuff.

    – Friend List Status change to Orange from when the player is inactive for a period of time. And there name filter to the bottom of the list since there less important to see or interact with.

  • – Friend List Custom subgroups/ organization of Friends list (example: Battlefield 4 Players)

    – Friend List Status Comments Box like it is on the PS3. I like to make a statement or post my emotional state so others can see I’m feeling happy or sad or when I’m sick. (These comments also should be view able offline so when you get back on you might have some friendly messages when you get back online)

    – MP3 Support & Multimedia Video Support to save to HDD or read off USB Flash or External HDD.

    – Change Background Colors for every different color of the month like it was on the PS3. (also the option to add background picture for those that like to add there personal pictures) me I prefer color changes.

    – Link PSN with Twitch so friends on PSN can also Follow on Twitch and by notified when that person starts streaming (also link on PSN Profile to launch Standalone Twitch Viewing App or within Live with PlayStation.)

    – Game Folder for manual sorting or by Game Type like it was on the PS3.

    – Multiple Account Support on PS Vita & PS TV.

    – Friends online/offline notifications (Option to only see this while on Dynamic Menu ONLY or both in-Game & Dynamic Menu)

  • Super upset that the next Tomb Raider won’t be on PS4, oh well.

When will music get its place on the PS4? When will we get more info on this 2.0 update?

Also, congrats on 10 million sold!

  • Sony, why did you lie that soon after the start of sales will be added to the function mp3, why bother to have to clean up all the media opportunities PS4 PS3? if I had known that you do not care about the consumers would buy from Xbox, and now, when I realized that you do not care for us, I’ll buy Xbox -Be advise it to everyone and I do not care anymore if you add this feature or not, and you add it as you steal all the chips from Microsoft, and they have already announced support for these function.LOL))goodbye sony

Almost forgot, Put this high on my list like 3 or 4th on my list,

Video Chat via Google Hangouts using the PlayStation Camera. We need to make a deal with Google because allot of people use Android Smart Phones including myself and Google Hangouts is a Chat/Video Chat service and would be used across a wide range of devices including Sony’s very own Smart Phone and Tablet devices. (This would be awesome)

  • What about Skype?! I thought that was supposed to roll out the same time the YouTube support..!!

  • @chekrzn62, WAVES BYE, Wont miss you.

  • Playstation i love the way you are handling things about hard drive support and mp3 music its gonna sound harsh but this is a console if you allow people to connect there hard drives its gonna happen the same as it happen to ps3 that everyone hack it and you guys are gonna losse money because people will buy ps4 with a small hard drive and insert their own hard drive keep it that way so hackers dont keep ruining games and cosoles few things do need to be fixed i agreed whit people about pausin downloads and resuming it aswell as organizing the games would be fun as well to be able to add moving wallpapers and to have more games available to pre order at the playstation store .

  • The lack of an announcement on MP3/DLNA being included in firmware 2.0 made me ponder this question:

Does Sony hate their own fanbase that much?

  • Y’know….if you guys had external hd support (Like the Wii U has) I’d go all digital with my purchases….just overall would buy more from PSN because I’d have no fear of filling up my sole hd.

This social media stuff is jsut bs. please fix up the UI, and add external hd support. That stuff is cool but it seems fixing the core problems should come first.

  • rimm2300 <—-you can hack an internal hd just the same man. No, most of us just want to go all digital and have a much easier time doing and even having the ability to have multiple hds to hold more content…as much as we'd like. You don't care fine that's fine, but if that's what you think is the one thing that will let hackers have their fun…you are dead wrong.

  • I hope you can deliver on 2.0 sony. Lets hope by years end that ps4 can do anything ps3 can do and a whole lot more. Crossing my fingers.

  • Well done on 10 million sold to consumers sony.

  • SONY’s new name is now SOON™Y

  • well this is an awesome news! this is gonna optimize our gaming experience but how does it work! lets say i don’t have a copy of a game my friend has and i want to join him is that spesific game going to be streamed to my ps4 or i have to download a portion of the game? in other words is it going to be a streaming service?

  • Last October, when Sony unveiled its FAQ about the PS4, there was a major outcry about the lack of MP3 and DLNA on the console. It was so major that Sony actually addressed it.

If we can make a big enough outcry this time around about firmware 2.00 and the lack of announcements on MP3, then Sony will have no choice but to address it.

  • I would really like to see Bluetooth headset support so I can use my headset.

  • I don’t care, Sony. Yes, this is a beautiful feature, but guess what? “Share Play” has the word SHARE in it. And until now, sub accounts have not been able to do ANYTHING Share-related! So this probably does not apply to ANYONE with a sub account!

Announce that sub accounts can be upgraded to master accounts, add that functionality, or this announcement will be just a moot point!

  • ALL I WANT IS.. DLNA player and local media player. really, that is all. i could care less about Music and Video Unlimited services when my own personal cloud at my home has my already paid for content that my last gen console can easily play and hell my TV and my Phone but.. my PS4 still can’t.

that is all i want.. DLNA player w/o Cinavia protection.

  • When is the TV streaming Service that you guys announced at the beginning of the year coming anyway? (that you said would be out this year)

  • Here’s what we need gaming wise;

.Friend Notifications when they go online and offline
    .Ability to change your Theme
    .Ability to change your Avatar
    .Folders for games
.Deleted games should be at the bottom of your library
.Ability to Appear Away, Busy, and Offline
.Have a comment above your name
.All notifications should be on the right side how it was on the PS3 because it interferes with the radar on FPS games etc
.Automatically appear Away for being idle for 10 minutes
.Have a folder for every game you played that saved on your hard drive, that when you go to manage it, you can delete a specific thing, like DLC, an update, camos, etc, deleting the whole game, or updates, you have to re-download everything back, and that is annoying and was very annoying on PS3
.When you looking at your friends list, when you click the options button over there name, it should say delete, message, etc like how the PS3 was
.Notify the user multiple times when your controller is low on battery like how the PS3 did, instead of just once and you forget about it and then it dies
.Ability to see when your friends were last signed in, like how it was on PS3, I.E. 0 minutes ago, 100 minutes ago, 2 hours ago 46 hours ago, etc.

  • @Scott McCarthy Is there more features in this update or is that all of them?

  • ^^Theses are some awesome features that should be added, and I would love to see them added…

  • Also a Twitch TV app, and we should be able to follow channels from Live from PlayStation on PS4, if they have a Sub button we should be able to see it and click on it, and mod support needs to be added…

  • Please add external HDD support. The hard drive in my PS4 will soon be full, and it will not be possible for me to install games.

  • We need to be able to listen to music CDs on the console very annoying that we can’t. Also like others have said don’t know why we need an endless icon on the main screen.

While I’m here is it better to leave the ps4 in standby or turn it on and off everyday?

  • @ + Azuske

stop being so high and mighty in the “enhances the game experience” by trying to underplay the idea of listening to our OWN music in game is not a priority or gaming-centric feature.

look through the four pages of comments. funny how DLNA, MP3 are in 80% of the posts. so yea.. we do want it since well, our previous gen console had it and in turn we built our livingrooms around this stuff or at least i did. i have a my own 12TB cloud that hosts all of my media and i don’t feel that i should have to pay AGAIN to stream said movies when they reside on my nice NAS.

  • Please allow us to change backgrounds and ad theme’s and that sort of stuff i really cant stand those annoying waves at my background right now…….

    Please

  • “you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared ”

Will this be powered by the PS Now streaming tech? .. streaming your game on a friends computer while they take over and play the game for you?

  • i’d like to see mkv support

  • UI upgrade please.

There is got to be a better way to organize games. Also, there should be more trophy sorting options. Why does the PS3 have more features regarding this than the PS4? Confusing…

Other than that, keep up the great work!

  • How about you fix the recording bug, rather than disregard it completely… “The PS4 constantly records your last 15 minutes of gameplay…”, instead they completely got rid of it with the 1.7 update, it doesn’t even try to record anything anymore. The suspend feature would be handy too. Thanks for the updates btw, but don’t get rid of features.

  • great features i will never use… why not give us DLNA video & music support with music playback during games & better multitasking of apps. We are in next gen yet last gen can do all these features.

  • great sony so NOT listening.

  • Are there any plans to add customization to the UI and the theme settings that we had on the ps3? I would really love to be able to customize the look of my home screen.

  • Great features, very innovative!

Of course like most others I’m still greedy and want my MP3, Media Player and DNLA support.

  • Everyone bugging about MP3, Video and other media support, you might want to stop.
Sony should be working on the idea and they have said multiple times that they hear their fans.
    They will listen to us.
The other thing the PS3 had better was a more organized UI.
The drop down menus showed you the contents of what you wanted to do.
I think many of us enjoyed the dropdown menu.
With all the games being in a line, it may take a while to get to the last one.
What would be nice, is have the sorting option like the PS3, and you can have games drop down.
Sorry about my bad editing, but this could be an option to make it resemble the old XMB
I didn’t mean to copy “The Race” icon but you get my jist.
I love the new XMB, but this is just an input of my idea.
