Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

  • At least u did something i want to turn the light on my controller all the way off

  • Folders. That would be highly appreciated. Our lists are growing but the more apps/games/demo’s we download, the less efficient it becomes to find what you’re looking for. Please fix

  • You give us a box and we half to put all the stuff in it and its to limitted why cant we do more

  • How many billions of dollars did we spend we should get more

  • It probally wont ever be enouph

  • Im gonna dim the bulb in my brain now thanks for something new hugs and more hugs bye

  • When are we going to see the ability to video chat in chat parties and in game??? Its the only reason I bought the camera and I havent heard any updates on when it will be available.

  • Definitely love the update, Sony has always been my first choice. I have one issue.. Please allow us to add our own MP3 music to PS4 like we were able to back on the PS3. All tho I am a member to Music unlimited (a great service) There are many songs that arent on that app I have a lot of personal favorites & actual music I created that I would really enjoy listening to while I play my games. This was one of my favorite things about Sony last generation, PS4 is better all around than any other system out there right now. Why not just make it completely superior with this minor addition ? Its been done before I dont see why it cant be done again. Everything else I can deal with but this is a must have for me. (and Im sure many others) Or maybe an option to connect our iPhone/iPod to PS4 via bluetooth ? Like I said its a great app, but its 15$ a month for what ? I cant enjoy my own music.. Maybe upgrade the app, I would gladly pay the 15$ a month if I can add my own music somehow ?

Thank you for taking your time reading this its truly appreciated!

  • I see there’s new voice commands for Apps. If PlayStation/Netflix or IGN is in there you just made my day.

  • Great update but it’s not clear to me how the preload function works. I bought Watch Dogs but it doesn’t say anything about preloading, only it will be available at 12:01 am on the 27th of May.

  • It says that there is now a screen saver timer u can add, is the screen saver just when the screen goes dull or is it actually a moving picture , The problem i have is the blue background, i really wish we could at least change its colour and even have dynamic themes on it, i spent a fortune on them for my ps3 but not able to have them i kinda feel ripped off and its a really boring homescreen, plus trying to get my ps4 to recognise my usb drive is a royal pain atm.

  • Prettier Vita UI? ;) ;)

  • I haven’t read through all 10 pages of comments yet, but I’d love to be able to share videos directly to my YouTube channel. Thanks!

  • HDCP disabling doesn’t work.. Stop lying to us Sony.

  • Anyway that the PS1 (like crash and what not) that we already purchased will become available for PS4?

    Also possibly some ps3 games?

  • Can you please fix the headset support?

    5.1/7.1 sound via usb
optical sound input and voice chat through usb/usb soundcard support at the same time
optical sound and mic support via dualshock 4 jack

  • Big update !! thanks for the hard work and keep listening to your customers

  • @364 It does, test your equipment. Go to System Settings and turn it off!

  • Why would you use FAT32 for the USB Drive? 3 hours to copy 15 minutes of video to the USB Drive? Why would you make this almost useless? Not very “Next Generation”?!?!?!

  • I see there are a lot of comments already here so no idea if you’ll even see my post but wanted to add some suggestions of things that either hadn’t been suggested yet or add my support to suggestions as well.

1- support for mp3 files. So such as ripping an album to the hard drive or transfer via USB stick but most importantly streaming via PC. That includes games that will support custom soundtracks your able to still use PC as an option. Helps save space on the hard drive.

2- when someone leaves the party, a sound of some kind plays in the headset. When a disconnect happens and I’m on my tv or something it would be a way to know something happened.

    3- a dedicated YouTube app

4- the ability to upload videos to YouTube

5- themes for the dashboard or ability to change colors, more customizable things in general.

That’s all I can think of at the moment. So happy to see a company willing to listen to their customers, very refreshing and very happy with my ps4 thus far.

  • So I love how you choose who you respond too. Great updates they’re.

But you guys choosing to only Respond to the maybe 10 people that liked this update. You’re not listening to your investors.
Missing Video Playback from USB Device
Missing Audio Playback from USB Device

Listen to your Investors. Quit False Advertising too. Said That with the PS4 we would watch movies with other people VIA PS4’s. You have no ETA for this. (False Advertising). Just add the USB Device for Playbacks. You already made OVER 90 Million In Revenue but you cant add something from the Previous PS3 which would be a simple COPY AND PASTE of CODE. You’re Dumb.

    Sincerely,
    JakeTheBeast

  • PS/Sony giving us just what we want……!

Keep up the amazing and hard work everyone at Sony “everywhere!”

Now just get the 4 on par with the 3 in regards to media streaming/being a standalone HTPC for the most part! With the power savings of this system and the capability of having it be a HTPC as well would make me ditch my home setup now and just use my 4 whenever needed!

PLEASE!!! Give us this ability…….PLEASE Sony.!.!

  • This is Perfect! I Love it! Now The only features missing are Changing themes as the ps3 and add more apps .

  • Now this is a superb update for both platforms I already installed the update for my iPhone 5s gold yesterday. I know there will be more feature updates as the console goes along but this is a incredible major update!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My Update Wish list
    1. The most important to me is being able to change theme as the ps3 does.
    2. Ability to appear offline sometimes I would like to play without my friends knowing on onlne
    3. Navigate the menu with the touchpad.
    4. More apps youtube, HBO GO. I dont know if this one its possible ,Skype maybe?
    5. Again I want to change the theme of my ps4!!!!

  • I am so happy that the 1.70 update is available for PlayStation users! I was using my Elgato Game Capture HD this morning and I tried a mic check with myself and my friend. I could here myself PERFECTLY but i couldn’t here my friend talking within the Elgato’s recording software. We are in a party chat on the PS4 but you can’t hear my friend in the Elgato’s recording software. PLEASE FIX FAST

  • Fantastic update! I am very excited to start archiving my twitch PS4 streams. I always have people asking if they can check it out later ect. Also the video editor looks pretty sweet as I have a Roxio HD Capture Card and the software has a similar look which is a bonus.

It’s awesome that you are listening to your consumers Sony, keep up the great work!

  • Useless app is useless. How do I delete it?

  • This is a great update, but I really would love an HBOGo patch. Watching “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones,” & many more great HBO programs is fine from my computer, but they’d be so much better on the beautiful Playstation 4.
    Thanks again for the update,

  • 3D Blu Ray support would be great. Cant beleive neither XBox 1 or PS4 have it yet. I would love to not have to drag my 3d blu ray player around to watch my 3d Content. is that on the list? after all PS3 had it

  • GREAT update….a lot of what i wanted has alreay been said. Lets get to it PS!

  • OKAY, I take back all my negative presumptions on the PlayStation software dev. team being too slow and hard. I understand they must listen, consider and evaluate the players suggestions/ wishes and also they must go through creative implementation and QA.

So yeah , kudos for the latest update however … don’t rest on your laurels there’s still so much to improve on the PS4 and please do consider the most requested features now e.g media content playback, pause download, customize UI with themes, folders etc

One last thing, there’s too much stress put on “share”, as a cool as the feature is bring the gaming aspect forward and the least you can do is enabling us to share with PSN friends.

  • I know the answer to this is probably no, but can the PS3 get a update to turn off HDCP?

  • I personal just want 1 thing for my ps4 wishlist…… Please add Playstation Home to the ps4 lol you have alot of people who want it return on ps4 with countless threads on wanting it transfer

  • Great update guys, well done. I would really love to see suspend/resumeffeature implemente.

Being occupied with full time work and a busy dad I rarely have time to play ffor extended periods of time, both our PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS have the ability to enter sleep mode which we can resume playing after few hours or sometimes few days rright where we left off without losing game progress.

I do believe there was a mention of such feature update in previous playstation blog few months ago.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Still no mp3 playback, a usable browser or the ability to sort the GUI. Is there anytime frame or is sony still attempting to push music unlimited on its customers?

  • thanks for adding bluetooth so i can use my px4s on bluetooth chat. *sarcasm*

  • @83 PS Vita actually has DLNA support. I stream my Laptops videos on my Vita all the time. Same with music, I can transfer from it wirelessly too. PS Vita can stream, Music, Videos and Pictures directly from a computer only thing is it needs content manager installed

  • What time is the update actually rolling out? left my system in standby mode to update hope its done by the time I get home

  • What do we want? Remote control access to the system, mp3/mp4/rippable music, the basic functionality of the PS3…

For Pete’s sake, can’t we get back the media functionality already?!?!

  • Amazing update!!

    Still need:

    1 youtube app
2 access music from my PC
3 more integrated mobile app (like smartglass)
4 organise my apps & games
5 find friends thought facebook & twitter

I’m not very good at battlefield so put me with other bad people not level 1000 people!!

But keep up the good work!!!

  • Really excited for the sharefactory! Looks really fun to use. All these updates are very useful.
One more thing, are you guys ever going to get the youtube app?? Really hoping to get that soon.

  • After the updates I still cannot get the playstation app to find my ps4 on iPhone or iPad. When I contacted support via chat, I was told to wait for this update. I feel that there are some specific settings that need to be addressed but it seems like Sony does not like to support the app is its connectivity. When I mentioned this, I was just told over and over to wait for the update and that there was nothing that could be done. I love my PS4 but the second screen was a big thing for me and I have not been able to use since I bought the machine. Is it possible to get more support for connecting playstation app to PS4?

  • will not buy before USB media, DLNA, and 3D Bluray coming.

  • STILL no friends online notifications??

  • when will you be able to download this update off the internet to usb?

  • Please add the ability to stream videos from portable hard drives through USB. I would love it if I could make my PS4 my main media device in my living room.

  • Very important missing features for PS4 (please note your competition already has ALL of this):

Already on PS3 and much needed in PS4:
    1. DLNA
    2. Audio/Video playback (MP3, MP4, AVI, etc.)
    3. USB Mass Storage
    4. Enable Friend sign-on/off notification per favorite friends
    5. YouTube app
    6. GUI clean-ups and customization including Themes

    New:
    7. PSN name changes
    8. Reputation system
    9. Suspend/Resume remembers game state
    10. Music Player/Pandora app
    11. All voice commands work with PS4 controller mic, not just camera add-on

  • Sony, I love you, but please make DLNA support a priority sooner than later — myself and multiple friends are holding off on buying the PS4 until DLNA support is announced. Thanks!!!
