Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

  • Do you actually read your own forums? Non of this was highly anticipated and most people are very disappointed of what I read there.
You don’t listen, you just say you do…

  • With software update 3.10, support for the DualShock 4 controller has been added to the PS Vita TV, that previously supported only the DualShock 3.

Please give us DualShock 4 support for the PS Vita!!

  • @298 I mostly agree with what you say… it is factual! I also agree that I should have been more positive… But after so long of waiting for promised things that didn’t make it in almost half a year of PS4, just pisses me off really!
I stand by my words though… Sharing is really just a gimmick! On top of all, this works mostly for Sony interest (free publicity through gameplay and whatever). I really wonder who has time for sharing gameplay… But alas, everyone should do whatever they are happy with!

I just strongly feel this was not an urgent update and that all things promised were much more critical!

Talking about FLAC (which I agree with), I wish I could have SACD support back (the audio HD format that Sony helped creating and then neglected it completely…)!

Bottom line… It is great Sony is (FINALLY) bringing updates to their system! I just feel sorry these are the wrong things being updated!

  • @294 Take that back, FAT32 seems to be more reliable with bigger drives. Just hope my content won’t get bigger than its file size limit.

  • this update was a joke vita still cant download crash or spyro and tha screen dim feature needs to be removed or a option added to turn it off. doubt u will or care tho because u already hav our money.

  • The PS Store severely needs an option to search your download list, or at the very least split the download list between systems. Having to scroll through years of purchases just to find a single game is pretty annoying.

It would also be nice to be able to split purchased games and PS+ games.

It’s surprising that such a simple but huge improvement has yet to be implemented.

  • @306 i totally agree

  • Thanks for all the hard work on the update. Now can you please concentrate on bringing the PS4 more inline with the PS3? We need folders, music player, video player, photo player, themes (one of which I would like to be the XMB), avatars, multi audio output, YouTube app, PSHome, 3D support. Please and thank you…also, one more thing I haven’t actually seen anyone mention. Can we use the touch pad as a cursor for the web app? That would be swell, thanks again.

  • i signed in to just thank you guys for this awesome update,i know the whole being able to not play our own music thing is a problem for many people including myself but i know it’s coming. you guys just don’t wanna give us all these cool things at once and not have a lot of other things to be excited about on future updates lol but seriously being able to play our own music should definitely be on the next update,it’ll make ALLLL your loyal customers extremely happy. great job on this new update and once again THANK YOU ALL very much for listening to our suggestions.

  • Still no fix for playing Blu-Rays on a monitor? it plays them on freaking 480p….

  • The update is looking very good so far. One feature I would like to see is notifications of friends signing online. Hopefully we get to see that soon. Other than that, it’s looking good.

  • Cool update but i am sure more people wanted MP3/DLNA/Folders/Save Gameplay direct to YouTube than some of these features? So SONY is listening to the wrong people i think(i guess it’s just PR talk) :D

  • awesome guys. thank you aor all your support ;)

  • 313@ aor = for i’m sorry about that !

  • Recommendation for the next update (and quite a few people agree)……..

    3D Support for Blu-Ray, 3D Support for Blu-Ray, 3D Support for Blu-Ray, 3D Support for Blu-Ray!!!!

PS3 did it, and you expect a next-gen machine that comes after that to support it also. Absolutely stunned when I put my 3D disc in and got ‘that message’.

    thanks

  • come on Sony, it’s high time we had….

    1. DLNA support
    2. YOU TUBE APP
    3. Able to play own music in game

Would also like everything mentioned in the survey, especially player feedback.
These should have been your top priorities.

  • playstation should make SHAREfactory for the psvita i sure would use it a lot and they should make it to were we can record game play too that would be awesome.

  • Does the remote play update also fixes party chat on vita?… would really like to use party chat while using remote play!

  • Hi, good update, but still waiting for:

    CD/Super CD/MP3 CD audio playback.

    Blu-ray 3d

Music/video steaming from PC, tablet or phone.

To be able to play own music in games from any device.

    Themes/Wall paper

    PSone, PStwo PS 3 EMU.

    Thanks.

  • Audio and video quality of SHAREfactory are noticeably lower than the raw video. While the slightly lower video quality is acceptable, given the limited functionality of SHAREfactory, the audio is terrible. Audio is highly muffled, and a touch lower in volume. Improve the audio quality, and add shadow options for the text effects, and we have an acceptable innate PS4 video editor.

  • At this time I have to keep my PS3 and my PS4 in the same room as my PS3 does so much more than the PS4, I was hoping to put my PS3 in my kids room so they could have Blu-ray playback & video streaming, but because the Ps4 does not have video streaming & cannot play Blu-ray 3D (3D Blu-rays on my TV just look so good its something I do not want to give up) I have to keep using both systems.

Come on Sony the PS4 should of been better from day one than the PS3, not just have better looking games.

  • What’s up with the USB offload it’s horrible. I created a video in share factory it was just under 15 min which is the max time limit in share factory (why) and rendered it. Went to the video and selected copy to USB device. It says it’s gonna take 4 hr to copy over 905 mb. Wow I thought there was at least 2.0 USB ports in the system. I copy 2 to 3 gb of photos over to my ps3 in lists than 10 to 15 min. And no I don’t want to put all my gaming stuff up on my Facebook all the time my family doesn’t want to see it all the time I want it on my YouTube page. I was so excited for this update but it not what I expected at all.

  • All good, but when are we getting Youtube and 3D for the Blu-Ray player? You know, like the PS3 has?

  • no psn lvl 100 cap lift in the update? :(

  • Love what you have done but CD playback is something most of us want this really needs to be in an update soon. Plus with games like WWE 2K15 coming this year to PS4 it will be very hard to add our own custom theme music to our characters when we can’t get the music onto the PS4. This is an update that we need soon.

  • PS3 style DLNA Support would be awesome

  • And with CD playback that includes MP3 and Youtube. Come on when the PS3 is still better than the PS4 because it can do so much more there is clearly a problem. You are not listening to the masses you are only listening to who you want to hear from. Do the right thing and give us what we REALLY want, MP3, CD, Bluray 3D, & Youtube, come on guys get it together.

  • So what about the bluetooth profiles for headsets, will we ever see that? I do hope so, i don’t want to keep my px4’s tethered to the controller.

  • Very nice! thx, will update my vita and PS4 this morning. already updated my app on my phone!

  • just got the update, and the favorite i like the most is using the keyboard w/ the touch pad on the controller. I’m like why was this not implemented on release its just….O.o

  • Is it just me.. But i noticed that i left the controller on… The light bar turned off after a few minutes … Then i picked
up the controller… I no longer had to sign in, in order to keep playing… :O nice!!!!

  • @pauln241, i agree man i have my PS3 sitting here also in my living room just so i can watch 3d movies as well, sure seems sony has moved on from this feature even though a ton of movies still sell the option to buy 3d blu ray. hope this is sorted by the end of the year. I’m patient with it seeing how i only use the ps3 in my household but still would be nice to have that option for PS4.

  • Love my gold wireless headset as well.. wonder when the next update all have some more features for it as well!

  • Awesome update!! Coming back to playstation after a hiatus since PS2, glad to see you guys really working on it. I’d LOVE to see the ability to buy and play old PS3 games over the store. While there aren’t a huge selection of games for the PS4 and there probably wont be a very diverse selection for another year or so having access to more titles would be awesome.

  • I know this isn’t software related, but…I would like a DS4 in the shape of the DS3. The DS3 fits PERFECTLY in my hands, which makes gaming for hours comfortable. The DS4 is too bulky, sits awkwardly in my hands. Can’t play for hours without discomfort. Maybe give the PS4 DS3 comparability. Please and thank you.

  • Hello Sony,

why can all you TV’s can play mp3, mkv, mp4, wmv etc., but NOT your so called “NEXT GEN” Console.
    This is so….FAIL.

why can’t i pause my 40GB Assasins Creed Download
    This is so…DAMN!

why is there no youtube? you remember? that small, petty video platform noone uses?
This is so….SONY? HELLO? WE WANT YOUTUBE!

why am i not allowed to stream anything in my homenetwork? my tv does this, y cinema system does this, my pc does this, my smartphone does this. Who not? Suuuure an Sony High End Console.

It’s ok Sony for making a great Job about Gaming (except there are’nt many games).
I love you Sony. But i don’t like your way of marketing.
NO MP3? Are you seriuous? We know, you want us to use Music Unlimited.
WE WILL DECIDE ON OUR OWN if we pay money for your streaming or not. But that is no reason for disabling MP3 support.

So Sony please, don’t be like apple. Be the Gamer and give him what he wants, so the Gamer will give you all of his money ;-)

  • I would like to see more u shoul be able to do everything u do on ps3 i dont know why u cant and the free games on ps4 for most of them have just as good graphics as nintendos first console come on this isnt an atari its a ps4 use the power to make more visually exciting games i need better games im bored with the same stuff and i dont want to buy a game that doesnt look better than ps3

  • This update is going to be EPIC! Especially ShareFactory, thank you Vegas team!

Would love to see native YouTube/Google+ sharing, I know you can export with 1.7 but that’s going to be a whole thing. Also love to see native resolution and frame-rate capture.

Another thing that I’m not sure if it can be addressed in a software update but I noticed since I leave my PS4 in standby is when the power goes out the PS4 will not go back into standby upon power restoration and also when powered back on the first time after the outage complains of being turned off improperly. Short of getting a battery backup or having advance knowledge of a power outage so that I may properly shut down, I’m not sure of a solid fix.

Still awaiting hopefully MP3/FLAC playback as well as DLNA or better yet Plex support and hopefully DLNA and MP3/FLAC in game audio. Sadly Music Unlimited is completely useless to me unless/until I can upload my own music, matching will never work as Music Unlimited will NEVER have a good majority of the rare and/or local music I have and failed a lot of the commercial music I have even Sony’s own artists.

    Greatness!

  • I do enjoy my ps4 and you are way more friendly than microsoft i hate xbox there thiefs thank you for not ripping people off i really enjoy your costumer service there very friendly and that goes a long way in my book your rated number 1

  • I am glad to Sony investing into gamers.

I have too invested into sony buy commuting to their brand for their gaming products. I am enjoying the 3 system out now and I am very pleased at how well everything has been going .

Please Sony, Please continue to invest in gamers and I and we will continue to keep invest in you.

Things I would love to see come to PS4 PSN and the SONY Brand,

    PSN Shopping Wish List,

Ability to Gift Games over the PSN

Classic games like Poker, Chess, Backgammon, checkers, Euchre, Cribbage, available to PS plus members done in public and private tournaments for for or a fee. Prize could be tradable, useable coupons to games for discounts or freebies,
Just a thought.. get people playing the older games again and a perk for paying for plus…

  • I was really looking forward for this update, but not for the anticipated Share Factory. For me that’s fluff. I was hoping to see many of the PS3 feature to show up in PS4. I guess I was expecting too much. Really disappointed in this release. As someone else said earlier, I guess Sony listens, but only what they want to hear. Oh well, so much for the ultimate multimedia platform. I was really looking forward to start streaming videos again from my network, but that’s too much to ask. Hopefully in the next release.

  • Would you please add the option of making a notification if one of your friends goes online and also the option to sign in invisible so that no one would know you’re online? Please and thank you.

  • I think alot of these updates should have been already installed and i feel sorry for my friend who has slow internet

  • Help us

  • I want a better free game if theres no good games out ps3 gets better free games why cant i get them on my ps4

  • Come to think of it… This update improves nothing about what the PS4 itself can do. The only improvements are outbound… The only thing that I see improved on what the PS4 can actually do, is changing the profile picture via the PS4 iOS app. That is all… And that is, frankly, kind of sad!

  • I rented a movie on my ps3 upstairs i shutt it off went to watch it on my ps4 couldnt watch it i was mad i can do it the other way around

  • just updated the vita & PS4. wow the vita update def helped! i like being able to dim the light bar on the controller, will mess around with the other features later this afternoon. thx again sony! def a happy customer right here.

  • Make a way to EXPORT the video clips in your usb drive NOT _COPY_
    Copying takes A LOOOOOONG time
