Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

  • Wonderful! The best keeps getting better :)

Would be amazing if we could change our PSN user names though.

  • so psyched for this new update!! Can’t wait to play with ShareFactory and enjoy all the other updates!!

  • will this be out at midnight tonight?

  • Great additions! But I’d really like to see:

    1) DLNA support and local media storage, particularly so we can listen to OUR OWN MUSIC when playing a game. Music Unlimited is still buggy and the music selection is incomplete.

    2) The ability to use voice commands to record video clips. The Share button is nice, but now that I also own an Xbox One I have to admit that being able to just say “Xbox, Record That” and quickly capture a great gaming moment without having to pop out of the game is fantastic. PS4 needs to have a similar feature for recording short clips or making longer ones.

    3) 3D Movie playback. The PS4 supports Trine 2 in 3D. Where is the love for 3D movies? Furthermore, Sony’s support for 3D movie rentals on PSN is poor in general. 3D movies are still being put out in movie theatres on a regular basis, at least two or three a month, but we can’t rent these movies in 3D on Sony’s service.

    4) Music CD playback and MP3 ripping. Xbox One plays CDs and both the Xbox 360 and PS3 supported CD ripping and the aforementioned custom soundtracks.

    5) The browser, just like the PS3’s last generation, is TERRIBLE. It barely even supports Flash or other streaming video types.

  • So… when are you guys going to re-instate the PS1/PSP games support on the Vita that you guys “accidentally” enabled last week and just to take it away 2 days after?

    Pssh.

  • When will we see the ability to stream videos, etc from our PCs?

  • nice to have a big fix but the only thing i care about this one is dimming the light bar on ps4 controller. top 3 wants: DNLA streaming, BD remote support (using my ps3 for netflix and amazon than ps4 because it works with my harmony remote), 3D bluray support. love my ps3 cause it only does everything and i’d hope my ps4 was the same, only BETTER, not worse. love gaming on it tho!

  • Cant wait! looks good

  • I am still waiting until the PS4 could play mp3 and videos on an USB, as my PS3 does, before buying a PS4.

  • Awesome update! Keep them coming guys…. hopefully in the near future we can change out PSN Name.

  • I only care about the DS4 updates, the automatic downloads and additional voice commands, all features I will use, thank you.

I agree with the people who said the next Vita update should include an option to turn off the auto dim and auto sleep features. Becomes very annoying at times to have to tap the screen to keep it on.

Having said that, I’ll say that I love my PS4, my 2 Vitas and my 2 PS3’s (but not so much my PSP Go) so overall I am a happy customer. I just wish we had more of the awesome, exclusive features, choices, games that SCEJ almost always gets first.

  • Please, please, please hurry up on adding DLNA support! :-)

Would LOVE to see more support with video codecs than you had on the ps3, but even having the exact same video/music features as the ps3 would be fine! :)

Also, please update the amount of videos we can download on the ps4 from the ps3 store/licence. I’m sure there must be some difficulty in getting the same videos onto the ps4 store…but I’d love to be able to download what I already bought on the ps3 video store.

    Thanks!

  • I cannot believe you don’t have a fix for the TERRIBLE Wi-Fi speeds of the PS4.

  • trophies.!!!!NP-32157-8 BUG FIXED??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OKAY okay … what about Blue-Ray Playback and 3D Blue-Ray?

PS4 is 2 steps back from PS3 in terms of being a center of the entertainment in any living room / den.

    Tisk Tisk

  • its 12:04 what happened D:?

  • Update is up for me, PS4 & PS Vita, downloading now, yay!

  • Very disappointed.. I was hoping for A LOT more than this in the way of practical additions put out as a higher priority than what we have been given here.. Share Factory, Pre-downloading games and disabling HDCP i honestly couldn’t care less about.

These are the things i would much rather have Sony seen work on first as a priority personally: The options/ability to sign into the PSN Invisibly or not at all. Ability to turn joypad light OFF. A Youtube App is a must! Ability to see trophies earned at the touch of a button as you earn them and have them update right away automatically as opposed to having to do it manually. Make PS Vita games/game viseos/wallpapers and avatars available in the PS4 Store. Ability to rip your own music to the hard drive to play while gaming(preferably with a shuffle feature). Make the console power button turn off after 3 seconds of holing rather than the mammoth 7 like it is currently! And fix the six axis tilt on the virtual keyboard, so left actually tilts left, and right tilts right.

  • Definitely need to add a flash player to the Internet. You would think, a “Next Generation” console would have a flash player.
Notifications when a person signs in.
More apps – Facebook, Twitter, Skype all would be great to have.
    Music player
Ability to have two or more Applications running at the same time. For example, if I am in the middle of a Madden game, and my friend signs on and wants to play Battlefield, I would like to easily switch over to Battlefield multiplayer where I last left the game and not have to start the game over and watch the opening credits.

  • As a photographer/graphic designer, I love the idea of uploading a profile photo from my phone.

As a member of the internet, I’m afraid of the idea of people uploading profile photos from their phones.

  • In terms of feedback, I only have a couple of issues I’d like to address.
I understand the push for the Video and Music Unlimited services, but a LOT of people used the PS3 for its capabilities as a media server and streaming box. Being able to play one’s own videos and music on the PS4, either from a home PC or USB drive, would be great to have back.
The auto-recording feature also seems to need some fine tuning: I’ll be playing Call of Duty: Ghosts with my friends, have this spectacular moment, and I can’t share it because it just wasn’t recording whatsoever.
Last, this CE-whatever error crap has to STOP. It’s the same error, popping up and crashing games, apps, and generally being a major pain in the asses of everyone I know who uses a PS4. I lost the best game I’d ever played of Don’t Starve (18 days, an impressive feat for me) because this CE-whatever error crashed the freaking game. PLEASE murder that error painfully!

  • Software PS4 system update is live at 12 AM PST. Sweet. Can’t wait 2 try out the new exciting stuff

  • will share factory have sound for the game clips we record? every time i record a clip for nba 2k14 no sound records. i havnt tried other games.

  • Also, if the rumors regarding PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility are true, I trust this means I’ll be able to, at some point, download my PS3 PlayStation Plus games to my PS4 to play them!

  • Now its time for:

    – native YouTube app
    – TuneIn app
    – DLNA support on (PS4 and PS Vita)

  • local backward for PS1 and PS2 discs PLEASE!!
I want to play my old PS2 games on PS4 again :)

  • @Avalanche 273
You won’t get audio in NBA2K14. They (2k) blocked it due to copyright issues. Stupid decision. For now the only way to get audio is to connect pad to PC via minijack and record it. Then just export mute video from PS4 and connect them both with vdub or straight in youtube.

Copy speed from PS4 to USB is dramatic slow. 1MB per 6s… Clips have around 700-900MB. It takes over an hour to copy them…

  • Can you Please add DLNA to the PS4 systems, PS3 had them installed. DLNA allows me to watch video and home movies from mine computer thru the PS4 system to the TV. Can not understand why it was removed.

    Thank You
    NYRican3

  • Oh and thanks for the hidden feature. We can now switch between accounts without logging off :D

  • @274 Unless you don’t remember just how much the PS3 cost when it first came out then you must realized that will not happen, hardware-wise the PS3 will not be emulated by nothing other than a PS3. So no, just PS1 & PS2 emulation.

  • Feature I want the most, Cross-Platform Party chat. Let me set up a party from my PS4, to chat with my friends on PS3 or Vita.

  • Oh, and ShareFactory is up for download on the PSN Store as well!

  • Ability to appear offline, video (mp4x divx, xvid, mkv, etc…all video formats) and music mp3 playback support like on the ps3. Abilitity to sort the main list of games and apps.

  • @273 IF you use an HDMI capture device with HDCP turned off now you should be able to record your gameplay this way.

  • @274 Playing PS3 games on your PS4 seems to only be possible with Playstation Now streaming service. The PS4 isnt powerful enough to emulate a PS3 without having some specific hardware inside it that the PS3 had. Since it does not have said hardware, it is not possible.

  • There seem to be some nice features in there; the ability to set the DualShock 4’s light to dim will prove handy, especially as the battery life is relatively poor compared with other consoles and even the PS3 (I get around 6-8 hours at most before I need to recharge).

Also, will this update finally address the annoying grey screen bug that I sometimes get when viewing my in-game screenshots from my Profile? They used to crash the PS4 and return me back to the Home screen with error CE-34878-0 but now I just get a grey screen on occasion (fixable by Sharing to Facebook then cancelling so clearly a bug!!!).

  • Also, how about expanding the letter/numbered error code you get when attempting to upload to Facebook to include a more meaningful message about what exactly the error is like “Too many images uploaded. Please try again later” instead of baffling users with meaningless codes that only make sense to support staff?

Finally, why do you not Message all your online users that you are doing maintenance like what Microsoft do? It’s can be easily automated and is far better than turning on your console, only to be greeting with an error message because you didn’t know that maintenance was planned. Not everyone reads daily news sites which is where I typically find out about maintenance.

It’s simple stuff like that which would make the PS4 experience all the more enjoyable for everyone.

  • @268 Please read your PS4 manual, why are you turning it off every time? Make use of standby, that’s why it’s there.
Does your location not have reliable power?
And if you must turn off your system every time, use the PS button on your controller then go to power off, stop using the system buttons and it will be much faster.

  • @287 They added a “from playstation” to the notifications section, hopefully they do make use of that for announcements and scheduled maintenance. Good point there.

  • @277 I would try different thumb drives and hard drives, my WD is a USB 3.0 and had no issue with speed. It could also be a formatting issue so watch out for that.

  • A pretty poor update imho. I was expecting the return of many if no all the media options that the ps3 currently has, which makes the ps3 superior to the ps4; in most peoples opinions, if not all.

  • @269 All your app suggestions are good but it will mostly depend on the particular platform holder (Facebook makes their own apps and same for Google with YouTube).
As for Flash Player, Adobe once said they were refocusing from it to HTML5, and the web wants to dump it but they are being very slow about doing so. So take it from a web developer, Flash Player is a nightmare, unless you just trying to play games with it (guessing that’s why you want it).

  • @291 I hope they are listening and this is hopefully a ‘prepping the waters’ type of update (system foundation, and reliability).
Hopefully by the time we get to 2.0 we will have most if not all most requested features, that’s sort of how it worked on the PS3, that was a major update as well (if I recall correctly).

The media features will be coming, and I am surprised they are not here yet. I do understand that they focused on the games and (some) social features for the PS4, but when you come from a mature system like the PS3, the PS4 seems a bit lacking.
We will get there, but some just don’t seem to have the patience to get there.

Anyways, not everyone has a PC along with a PS4 to enjoy their media, this was something PS3 (It only does everything) owners did not have to worry about.

  • @290 I’ve tried iOmega 3.0 and wasn’t even detected. What file system you’ve got? FAT32 or NTFS?

  • Oh, one more thing, where can I send suggestions for UI mockups, improvements, etc.
The old channel for suggestions was abandoned and I got some really good input to share, don’t really want to keep spamming the blog.
In fact, throw a survey together with the option to link either a media site to share mockups or something similar.
I have a hard time trying to describe all the improvements to the UI in 2,250 characters on the blog.

  • Don’t want to sound ungrateful… But really, these updates are useless to me (obviously, I am not arrogant enough to say they are globally useless). Why not bring things that matter more? Like MP3 player, DLNA, CD playing capabilities? What is the percentage of people that care about sharing gameplay? I care about using my console, not spend my day sending messages, uploading videos and whatnot!!! Whereas, I am sure some people do this, I would bet the majority does not!

    So, summing it up:

    Resume/Suspend
    MP3
    DLNA
    Music CD

Those matter… Sharing is just a gimmick and doesn’t!

  • @294 Does that iOmega have a software partition (more than one partition, usually one that keeps the software that comes with the drive)?
Those tend to be an issue with multimedia devices and I suggest re-formatting them to only have one partition (make sure you grab all your data first).
That WD is formatted with NTFS and it worked right away. FAT32 should work as well, but the max file size is 4gb (or was is 2gb), so I wouldn’t want that.
Do you use Windows or OSX?

  • @296 While you do try to not sound ungrateful (can’t really sound grateful or not unless some really good words are used) do not forget that the rest of your comment was aimed straight at those that do find those features highly welcomed.
I am not into sharing my content just yet, really just getting into it. These updates will make this much easier.

As for the features you think they should be concentrating on, I don’t disagree, they are a bit overdue since there were promised with the system (Suspend and Resuming of games, not just some apps).
I think they just did not see just how much people really wanted their MP3s, CDs and that flipping DLNA.

If you asked me I would forgo MP3 and ask for FLAC support along with it, that’s just me and a bunch of other audiophiles.
But think about it this way. Don’t most of us have a secondary device that does this already, works with more formats and usually does it much better.
Why is it that every device have to have the same feature set? (I am being serious here, trying to keep the discussion going).

  • When will we be seeing a YouTube app for the PS4? Like the one we now have on the PS3…

  • DLNA SUPPORT.
