Major PS4 System Update Out Tomorrow, Updates for PS Vita and PS App

At PlayStation, we love hearing the great feedback we get from our passionate community of gamers. That’s why I’m excited to announce that our highly-anticipated system software update for PlayStation 4 (v1.70) will be released tomorrow, with a huge number of your demanded features, and expanding upon what we believe is the most socially connected console experience. One feature that I’m most excited about is SHAREfactory, our new rich video editing app. In addition, we’re launching updates for PlayStation Vita (v3.15) and PlayStation App (v1.70) that will deliver greater integration with your PS4 system.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect with tomorrow’s software updates:

PlayStation 4 v1.70 Update

  • SHAREfactory: After you update your PS4 to v1.70, an icon to download our free SHAREfactory app will appear on your PS4 system’s home screen once it’s available. Once installed, SHAREfactory allows you to easily customize your gameplay videos with special effects, video commentary with picture-in-picture capability through PlayStation Camera, and custom soundtracks using the included audio tracks or your original music imported from a USB drive. You can then share your videos on Facebook or export them to an external USB storage device. The app is packed with plenty of cool, but accessible, tools. It’s simple enough to use for beginning editors, while functioning as a rich video editor for those with more creative aspirations. Check out our new SHAREfactory video that provides a walkthrough of what you can expect:

  • Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.
  • Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.
  • USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.
  • Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.
  • New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
    • Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
    • Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
    • Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.
  • New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.
  • New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.
  • New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.
  • PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.
  • More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.
  • New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.
  • Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

PlayStation Vita v3.15 Update

  • PS4 Link Update for Remote Play: Linking your PS4 and PS Vita together will now be easier with the 3.15 update for PS Vita. It’ll enable Automatic Device Registration, which will automatically detect and pair both systems when they’re both online and the same user is signed in to both devices. This makes it even quicker for you to get started on Remote Play or access other second screen features.

PlayStation App v1.70 Update

  • Push Notifications, Friend Requests and More: This new PlayStation app update will give you the option to receive Push Notifications for select PS4 updates you want to receive, such as gameplay Invitations, Game Alerts or Friend Requests. You can also receive Friend Requests via email or text messages with the app update. Also, it’s now easier to change your profile picture right from your mobile device by uploading an image from your photo library, or taking a photo using your in-device camera.

I’ve covered a lot of the key updates in the post, and additional details can be found here.

We can’t wait until the software updates are released so you can start enjoying all of these great features. In particular, I look forward to seeing your SHAREfactory videos and seeing all the creative ways you can make your gameplay moments memorable.

Let’s keep the conversation going – we love getting feedback from you and seeing what else we can come up with to continue making PlayStation 4 the best place to play. Please let us know and we’ll continue to always serve up great content and features to you – the gamer.

  • Honestly, I don’t know why you would want to upload directly to YouTube from your console. A youtube video is supposed to be well edited highlight video, but it’s great seeing that you can export to usb. Uploading takes too long compared to just throwin the file onto usb. Love the update Sony! Keep it coming. You guys seriously went all out on the ps4 and it’s paying off!

If I could throw in “something i want” please give us a “friend came online notification” with the ability to maybe make a list of who you want on your notification list, so if you have a lengthy list of friends, you can select who the system tells you comes online. Just an idea ;)

  • Good to see another update, but can we PLEASE update the UI so we can set it up how WE want it…..I am tired of looking through 15 icons in the tv and video section…..shouldn’t we be able to delete the ones we will never use???

The UI is sleek but very much a locked down system. At least the ps3 gave us some options….even though they were not great. Why not take a page from the evil empire and give us the option to make a tab with the games and apps we like to use frequently.

  • This update is making my scream with joy!!!! Keep up the good work Playstation Crew!

Maybe next update you can add more dynamic background options instead of the default blue one (like how the ps3 one change colors every time you logged in)……

  • Looks like a lot of hard work went into these updates, and some of them I am eager to try out. The updates listed on most important I am extremely unhappy about not being added to the PS4 already. These need to be added ASAP

    Most important updates

    3d blu ray
    Bluetooth headsets
MP3 Playback / listening to our own music
    Video support for mp4s
    Photo Gallery viewer
    DLNA

These next ones I would like to see at some point in the near future

Ability to organize games into folders
    Ability to appear offline
    Friend online/offline notification
Private video chat like on ps3

And the last set of suggestions are if you get around to it that would be great

    Custom themes or wallpapers
Delete games from trophy list that are 0%
The ability to change the gamer name

  • Please please can we get a media share function. I have to use my PS3 to access my media drive which kinda gets in the way of PS4 usage :P

  • When is 3D update coming out to PS4

  • I would love to have a virtual avatar like on Xbox One in the form of a Sackboy or ModNation Racer!!!

  • I’m not sure if its been asked, but for Vita (yes I’m an avid vita player) – I don’t like scrolling on the home screen, can you increase the limit of items you put in folders? I’m looking for better organization of my card games (I have 40+ or so and it’s a mess) and PSN games but 11 or whatever it is isn’t enough and I hate having multiple folders. Also I don’t use any of the social stuff, is there a way you can let us delete apps that we don’t use such as email, calendar, etc. so save valuable space on the memory cards?

  • still no mp3 playback or our own media what a joke i really regret buying a ps4 i assumed it would have all the features the ps3 had but have better graphics , it seems graphics is the only feature it does have but even that comes at a premium £15 extra for the same game . plus you cant back up the vita to this as you could with ps3 . it seems like your trying to take every penny we have by paying for ps plus music unlimited and your videos . i know you will ignore this as you only reply to the posts were people thank you and call you amazing for giving them an app which is basically advertising games for you. iv owned every playstation plus psp n vita and have spent thousands on your games but wont be spending a penny more and im cancelling ps plus right now

  • Mp3 mp3 mp3 mp3 so annoying… Typed on a Sony Xperia Z1S

Oh did I mention ADD MP3

  • My question is, when are we going to get the HBO to GO app and the others that the PS3 has? It shouldn’t take this long to get an app like that. Should only be a few tweaks to make it work.

  • thank god i can finish dim the light bar awsome keep up the good work sony

  • If playstation add the avatar in the form of mod nation characters, like xbox avatar would blow it out the box in the console war i know alot of people who wont buy a ps4 because of that smh but it would be great even if their charged like $10 just to start it

  • There’s still a lot of functionality I’m waiting for, but this sure is a great update! So happy about the lightbar control and video exporting. I wasn’t happy with the quality of my recordings before.

  • Dlna mp3 dlna mp3 people are tired of the BS. Otherwise a great system.

  • I would like to be able to organize my games at least into a folder it feels very messy the way it is.

  • you guys really need to add direct upload to youtube seriously who wants to be the next famous facebook gamer nobody facebook was dieing way before the console was released why would you go with a dieing company that is trying to get compition with you through the oculus rift you guys have project morpheous why even associate with a company that is also a competitor that is like you guys handing over the dualshock 4 to Microsoft the only thing that I wish you guys and Microsoft could do is allow players to play with each other online weither on an xbox pc or ps4 it would be so much fun and the community would be so much larger and there would be no need for this competition because sales would just continue to rise because the online gaming community would enjoy having battles like team xbox vs psnation that would be great im tired of all of this controvesey in my opinion pc gamers are the true winners because they clearly have a more powerful system so why would you argue specs without having the specs to argue

  • What I want is pretty simple. I’d like to be able to use the avatars I purchased on the PSN on my PS4 and PS Vita.

  • It would be great if sony release an update with:

    Play/import/export media from USB
Play music while playing a game
Personlization of the menu that looks disorganized and confused
    Youtube app
    Backwards compatibility
    Friends notifications.

PS4 is a great system, but if you look to its predecessor you will find basic features that are not on the new system, it results disappointing.

    Cumps

  • Just wanna be able to use my own music in games like MLB the show and Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes is that really too much to ask

  • Twitch or Ustream app of vita, and a option to record gameplay on vita.

  • I still don’t understand why I can’t play my 3D movies on PS4. I can play the Trine 2 demo and Zen Pinball in 3D but not my movies. I have to leave my PS3 out for those movies. As soon as they update that then my PS3 can go in the other room for the kids. This is a little annoying, other than that I think this is a good update!

  • thank you so much. this is an awesome update. so happy i bought my ps4

  • great update….few things i’d like to see added:

custom soundtrack in games…please let us use our own music

    video playback from USB

SiriusXM app….it would be great if we could stream satellite radio through the PS4 while playing

please add these things and i’ll be good!!! Thanks

  • i have downloaded share factory but when i open it , it says that i need a license

  • thanks sony :)

  • YouTube App, HBO Go app, GameTrailers app, Flash support for the web browser and Ability to be invisible while being online.

  • Oh and also a Photo Viewer and Wallpapers.

  • Will Paypal have geographic restrictions, as in PS3?

  • Seen a lot of comments about friends coming online notifications for a while now, seems that got ignored. Can we please stop worrying about sharing, and maybe get the thing up to at least as good as the PS3. Netflix is terrible, sound doesn’t work right. Would be nice to change themes. Still can’t play a movie from my computer through here. Got a nice G930 headset that barely is able to work with this thing, that I wouldn’t have even bought if the bluetooth headset that works great on my PS3 would work on here….

  • Please turn on DLNA functionality.
Are we going to get DLNA or not before summer?

  • Nice update. But where is flash capability? Music player, personal picture upload? Fully functioning social networking? Posting, sending/receiving media. Ability to upload my own playlist to my nba 2k like ps3? There is potential for ps4 to be full of hoped for satisfaction for its users, but having to revert and resort back to my ps3 for internet browsing is frustrating.

  • This is really disappointing. So none of these features are what my friends, family, or I care about. No DLNA, MP3, 3D Game/Bluray Support, theme support, ability to organize library, ps1/ps2 support, etc. Unbelievable. This sucks.

  • PS, where is the update for the bluetooth mic and the availability to output the mic to the home speakers!?

  • Love how Sony ignores user comments

  • Cool! Like the shareFactory feature! Awesome.

  • LOVE THE UPDATE. THANKS SO MUCH.
    Regarding the VITA,
I have a suggestion for a future update.
I like to remote play to the ps4 a lot but certain games (such as bf4) are just too hard to play due to control mapping for L2, L3, R2, R3 etc.
I have seen that there are quirky ways around using your DualShock4 to control your vita using multiple accounts, etc, but a simple option to control your vita using your DualShock4 using Bluetooth would be very convenient.

    Thanks!

  • When are we going to have DLNA support? Please I am begging you… I cannot purchase a PS4 until I can also have access to my server!

  • My PS4 update wishlist:
    1. Like the PS3, see when my friends log in and log out. Something about knowing makes me feel more connected.
    2. Pressing the Playstation button takes you to the related notifications subject.
    3. Ability to sort XMB, may it be alphabetical or by folders or by recent activity. Im afraid of having so much content my XMB will get forever long.
    4. Functionality to try before you buy. Im really looking forward to Sony’s Rental program releasing soon.
    5. I can download apps to my phone from my computer via Google Play store. Would like to see this functionality between the Playstation App and PS4. Correct me though if im wrong and this already exists. Its to my knowledge that the file is waiting for you to personally turn on your PS4 so that it can download.
    6. A simple media player to play music while cleaning the house. I love music and i love playstation.
    7. Maybe a computer program to connect my computer via blue tooth so i can stream music or videos. Like Apple TV but Sony TV.
    8. Youtube App for sure
    9. Facebook App
    10. Skype App

    KEEP IT UP!

  • How about adding 3D Blu-Ray playback, I want to retire my PS3 from that duty.

• Great update! I’m looking forward to trying out the new sharing options when I get home today; However, lack of news on DLNA is disappointing.

DLNA (both in network streaming and from USBs) is at the TOP of my feature list for this generation of consoles. Please release an update soon so I can box up my xbox 360 and let my PS4 take over my entire entertainment center!

  • Love the update! Thank you for adding adjustable light bar settings! though I request that you go one step further and add an off option.

Also, adding a more accessible controller off button rather than going into adjust devices>turn off device>select controller. Having a “Turn off controller” icon on the first screen would be wonderful. Thanks!

  • Please read. The new features are nice but can you work on the getting the core of the system correct. The menus are incredibly slow. We need our wireless chat to work without a wire. Let us adjust the volume of our friends in the chat so i can hear them all equally. On future systems get the bottom of the system flat so it doesnt rock on a flat surface. I hope this helps.

  • Also please add support for Media playback from portable storage devices like the PS3 can!!!!

  • will there be a feature for using a usb stick in your ps4 to watch movies

  • I set up the download and my system won’t turn on any help?

  • I set up the download for the ps vita and it turned off and won’t turn back on any help?

• Pretty good update, nice to see Sony listening. New system updates still scare me as I always wonder if an existing feature will be removed as it has been in the past. I’m not really interested in the sharing options myself, although I might enjoy watching what others come up with. Hopefully dimming the controller light results in longer battery life.

    My PS4 wish list:

    1) Youtube App
    2) Music Player (MP3, FLAC, WAV, WMA)
    3) DLNA Support (still don’t understand why this wasn’t brought over from the PS3, although hopefully it will be improved upon)
    4) Some way to sort/organize games & applications. One long horizontal scrolling list does not scale.

And that is it really. Other than these things the system has everything I want and even the above should not be too hard to achieve. So should I expect to see these in the 2.0 update??? :-)

  • The 1.70 update seems to be causing issues with running Plex from the PS4 web browser. Any idea as to why this would be and how/if it could be remedied? I understand adding DLNA would be a huge undertaking, but we need access to some sort of local media streaming service and Plex was the only option, to my knowledge. Thanks!

  • Great update. In the future I’d love the ability to preload patches. The discs install so fast on PS4 but then I have to sit and wait while a patch sometimes in the multiple of gigs runs kills the hype of loading up a brand new game
