Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.
This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.
Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:
- The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
- The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

I want to buy my wife a PS3 Slim for the living room, so she can listen to MP3s, but I’m not doing it until Sony fixes that fading text crap. If this firmware doesn’t do it, then I guess she will get a Denon iPod dock instead.
You hear that Sony? It really is that easy to get my $350.
So when will we get PS2 backwards compatibility BACK into the PS3 so it’ll do everything again?

It would be nice if you guys at sony, could just improve Playstaion Home.. I mean lets say I downloaded a Movie and My friends want to watch.. all we would have to do is go to myspace in the P.S Home and watch it on a Tv you guys could throw in the P.S store for free.(lol).. and also vs each other in mini games, and listen to Music. i think that would be cool.. and that way the ppl at microsoft could eat there hearts out ;-)
I never had the compulsion to leave a comment before, but after two years owning the system, it’s time I start voicing my opinion, which you will find largely follows the general consensus.
1. CROSS-GAME PARTY CHAT
No excuses. This should be the primary component of the next firmware update. It will fix the often disjointed nature by which some developers handle (or botch) voice communication during games if anything. The party part of that is important. Make it 8 if possible, and seamlessly background whether ingame or just on the XMB.
2. BACKGROUND TROPHY SYNC
Again, no excuses. The reason people complain about it is because their console shouldn’t have the same things visible a PC has in all instances. This should be a permanent background function of the PS3. It souldn’t take more than a few seconds after a trophy pops to ping the server, and SHOULD NOT effect gameplay.

3. RSS SUPPORT
You know all those nice radio stations the PSP has? The PS3 is EASILY capable of the same and more. RSS support+that radio “app” installed on the PSP gives us that. Also, make sure it runs in the background of games, and you have a real winner.
4. FRIEND LIST DISPLAY
You got a lot of flack on this last update, and for good reason. The cosmetic changes were a step in the wrong direction. The XMB was always very classy and clean, and now it looks very bulky and unnecessarily alien to the rest of the presentation. Do this instead:

Just updated, turned on the trophy sharing facebook thing, and now I get error mssgs. when I try to sync trophies… Good work guys…

Here’s what people have been asking for that you have ignoring in every firmware update.
-Cross game voice chat
-Universal in-game music
-Internet radio
-Appear offline
AVATARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was said that we would be getting them in update 3.0 and still months later we haven’t seen not one new avatar any dates for any upcoming ones please! Oh wait I forget you don’t comment on rumor and speculation.
Another thing that I think is needed is an option to search for things by typing in the name of or game that we are looking for.
More music visualizers I’m tired of staring at the world globe when I play music why not incorporate some of the visualizes from the psp into the ps3.

*grumble* …so I follow the instructions and go to download the update. But when downloading the update it takes so long the update times out. Is it because everyone’s hitting the servers at once, or it there a real problem going on? Help us out Sony!

Just downloaded the update and I’m disappointed. I went to connect my account to Facebook but could not find the Facebook icon. At first I thought it might be a region based issue, but I’ve found that it can only be used by the main user account. Sub-accounts do not have the facebook icon. Which sucks as I was looking forward to using this. -.-
Sony, PLEASE fix this and release a 3.11 update allowing all accouts to use Facebook. Why you would limit it to just the main account does not make sense and is not fair to the rest of us who have sub-accounts.

wtf I just downloaded this piece of crap update opened the browser and went back to the movie I was watching online and it says application not supported. I was just watching it what kind of update is this

I’m unable to download the update and I’ve been trying to download it for the past hour. I’ve gotten to 6% then and it froze, I restarted and it got to 12%.

How long does PlayStation take to update version 3.10 on the web? I tried to update my PS3 by using an USB drive, but I was only able to download version 3.01.
If anyone knows a link let me know! I am having problems downloading the update directly to my PS3.

I have a similar problem. The video that plays for the preview of 3.10 right here on the blog now has an application not supported sign.

There is a website, PS3News.com, which has a link to the 3.10 update for download. The file is 159MB in size. Is this the legit 3.10? I thought it was only 23MB.

my personal opinion, but this update should not be mandatory.. its been 20 min already and its only @ 3%. not including the 4 prior error messages saying that network error cant log into system. if this update has nothing to do with the gaming network or lobby connection, then why im i having an issue with downloading? im not the only one, there are fellow gamers that are having the same issue

3.10 and 3.1 are the same thing. The 0 just isn’t necessary, so it can be taken out. They are the same.
3.01 miss type i did it and it asid that i already had 3.01 installed already
miss type, i did it and when i tried to install from zip drive it said that version 3.01 was already installed. waste of time

Please consider:
1) “Sort by name” in more folders (in particular, the memory card utility)
2) An option to post trophy milestones to facebook instead of all trophy data. I’m thinking specifically of a) platinum earned, b)new level earned and c)x50th trophy earned (50th, 100th, 150th, etc). Getting (and sending) trophy updates for every trophy is going to get old fast. But milestones would be more worthwhile.
Add a feature for Twitter and a feature to show that your signed out. Kind of like a hidden feature.

start your downloads and make sure you check the box that says turn off the ps3 when the download is done. Now turn off your Tv. and close your eyes.

the download process of the update is dragging almost too 15 minutes now and only 13% done. This is very disappointing Sony I thought your servers would be much better then this!

Yeah this is stupid, I hate that you have to do the update though it pertains nothing to a game that you want to play. Come on, get it running, flawlessly.
Agreed…unless this is addressing some serious issues regarding the firmware of the system, I don’t see the point in a mandatory update. Sure, the photo organizer will be nice, but I really don’t care about posting my trophy collection on Facebook (nevermind bragging about my purchases!). Sorry Sony, but that only appeals to fanboy basement-dwellers.
The friends list is even worse now. The color that your friends set their game card to now changes on your friends list as well. If I set my color to a certain one, all the ones on my friends list should appear as that color as well. My friends SHOULD NOT have any influence on how my friends list appears. Change the friends list back to how it looked pre-3.0. It was classy and looked way better than the one we have now.
Great but downloading it is a pain. Tried all evening and I keep getting a server error.
When I agreed to this update on the PS3 it only mentioned the picture UI change. Putting this other social networking junk in there without notice is fraud. Please talk to your legal department before your next update.
