Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

No, this thing is stupid. Why are we backtracking? To quote penny arcade. “What normal people want is voice chat.” Why in the world would I want to take time out of playing my game to chat with my friend on the console. Why can’t I use my phone or laptop right there with me instead, if I absolutely have to talk to someone while playing. Those tools are more versatile in that I can talk to them even if they are not playing. If they are, everything would be much better with voice chat, so I don’t have to make the arduous shift into the text chat within the system. This is a new day and age of technology folks, lets not devolve. On the whole, this update is functionless.
I’m happy that Sony releases frequent updates but the two things that I would like to see in the next updates would be
1. Better video codec support : Divx, wmv, mp4 etc There are still a lot of files I cannot play.
I understand that it would be difficult to cover the sheer number of codecs available but I would like to see improvements made to it with each release.
2. In game voice chat.

i want you to make an option for the friend list to be able to see it like before the patch 2.70
We need voice chat not text chat. I hate to say it but xbox has it when will the ps3 ever get it.

I think that some new features that you can add on the next firmwares could be the chance to change user in-game, because so many times I’m playing and to use other profile I should to go out to the game and login again, make those and waste the time is boring
Great update Sony!
Things I would like to see in the next one:
1). HD movies to own instead of just to rent on Playstation Store!
2). More selctions on the Visual Player when playing music instead of just the current 3!
3). PS2 games for download for those of us that have backwards compatability!

Being able to move stuff off of the PS3 is nice and expected, but how about something more substantial? Like FLAC support.
why is it that ur a re able to do all that but u still cant play my own music in game…

i do greatly like the backing of video files and larger 1Mb to 3Mb i love that
it’s good and all but the thing that would make the Ps3 100% osm is in-game music. and not just online. during campiagn and everything
Text Chat is a great feature, for leisure activities, or online, but like some users say, it’s too complicated on the controller. It would be better with PS Keyboard, etc.
Also, that’s one nice TV. :P

To everyone who says the text chat is lame.. you’re more right than you know. Using the controller to enter text sucks, and using a keyboard is pointless. The text entry box maxes out at half of the line width on the screen.. I get about half way through the sentence I want to type and it stops. WTF!?!

After updating to Firmware v2.70, IT NO LONGER SUPPORTS ALL MY VIDEO FILES (MP4, xViD, MPEG etc) that used to play perfectly with Firmware v2.60! It’s Like the CODECS that were natively supported up till v2.60 were either disabled or removed. What kind of an upgrade does this? I would expect Sony to follow a simple rule: First-Do-No-Harm! As there isn’t a way to roll back to v2.60 please address this issue with an immediate fix. I’ve also read complaints about game controls and such being broken after upgrading to v2.70..This is horrible!

Sony, dear dear Sony… what has happened to you? You used to be such a great company with great products and insight into the future of tech but the last few years you are really losing it. Just whos idea was it to implement a lame text chat system that is so short on character limit to begin with? I am starting to wonder if the Sony most of us know and love is dead and gone ;(

My family has the Wii, XBOX 360 and PS3 along with the PSP3000(along with all of the older consoles), and SONY, you are FAR behind from Microsoft.
The reason my friends and I hardly purchase games for the PS3 is simply because, YOU CANNOT IN-GAME PRIVATE VOICE CHAT. Texting? Who in the heck wants to TEXT during a game?
Horrible management decisions!!! During KillZone game, how can friends cooperate with each other, without hearing all of the dang little kids. Users do NOT want to hear what everyone is saying.
SONY, if you want US to purchase more games, ENABLE PRIVATE VOICE CHAT. Until then, I actually purchased GTA IV for the XBOX, although I purchased it for the PS3 long ago, simply because my friends and I cannot talk to each other, privately, IN A GAME!
This is such OLD SCHOOL ideas, but ESSENTIAL to move CONSOLES.
SO, MY PS3… CONTINUES to be a BlueRay Player… other than that… IT SUCKS as a GAME CONSOLE.

SONY, GO PURCHASE your competitors product and see why THEY ROCK. XBOX 360 (in which I have as well) rocks. It is sad that 9 out of 10 games I purchase, MUST be for the XBOX, simply because I play with friends; IN GAME VOICE and MUTING are ESSENTIAL.
Text chat? I assume this is some kind of April fool’s joke. I assume that because voice chat–in and out of games, as well as across games–is what we want, and what the Xbox has had since its inception. You know what else would be nice? When I see that someone on my friends list is playing a game, I could pop in that game and join their server. You know, like you can on Xbox.
I am extremely pleased with my PS3. However, the PSN is kind of a turd in the punchbowl. It’s barely useful, and all the features that we actually want are being passed over for features we don’t want (e.g. Playstation Home).
Make it easy for me to meet up with my friends in games, and talk to them. Is that so damn hard?

I updated the firmware on one of my Playstations 3 machines and now I am unable to play any avi files on my media server from that machine. Anyone have any ideas on why this is so? I sm able to play them if I put them on a removable drive and then connect it directly to the USB port.
These are files I could watch prior to the upgrade. As a matter of fact I was in the middle of one and stopped to upgrade then went back to it afterwards and the file says “File not Supported” and in the information it will show the title as in atthepark1.avi, but no other information such as date and time or size, length,resolution or video codec information.
Anything anyone knows that may remedy this is surely appreciated.

I noticed Xbox live has the option for those ppl who have netflix to use there 360 to watch movies useing there console. When is sony gonna let us do the same? I’ve had netflix for a very long time now would be nice not to have to move my desk top to the leaving room when i wonna watch a movie.

The new update has screwed up my system too.
White dots all over my videos, the options screen does not load and icons are pixelated and pink not white.
It has froze up on me three times today, since the update.
Not impressed, I would love to undo the latest update and feel we should not be forced to apply them.
