Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Its a nice feature, but the Friend List is akward. Maybe i can get used to it, but can you add an option to have it the old way?
I cannot play my NAS content properly either. I also tried copying a 1GB file over to my PS3…. and it turned into a 3GB file according to the PS3!!? Please fix this!!
yes please fix the battery over the time thing also. I know it’s minor but it is quite silly tbh.
Hi…well I have a little problem downloading teh 2.70 ps3 update in the computer and in the ps3 system, becuase when im instaling the update with a portable media divace its says that and error ocurred, and when im downloading un the ps3 system it happends the same plz I need some help =(
The thing i don’t like about the update is that my username had stars but not anymore!!!
Can we search for chatrooms in the text-chat?
I struggled with Flying Fox in Heavenly Sword, so it would be really cool if I could search for a IRC-chanell like ‘#Heavenly Sword’ and ask other players if they had tips for defeating him.. :)

man they need to put cross game invites and in game chat. Also we need in game web browser, in game music for every game, and well thats about it but i would like to see this happen soon.

what the heck ps3 is really slow..i hate to say but 360 been had this ps3 is way behind..a great update will be letting players listen to music during gameplay..release home already is not going to be that great anyway..NEW AVATARS FOR GOD SAKES,,,just bring a new life to the online experience and i promise you sony more people will play the ps3.thanks and i hope this really comes true…

The ability to play music while in-game was added in a long time ago. Killzone 2 has it. I believe Sony left it up to developers on whether they want to implement it.
can someone tell me what the performance is on 1 single SPE?
the limit in buffer memory size is only 256K per running program? or is this shared over 6 spe’s? is the core spe a bit like a PPC604?
Eric you really need a “party chat/cross game chat” because there are a lot PO’ed PS3 owners. 3 years is a long time to catch up the XBOX live. I think you guys really should work on what people REALLY want. E3 is a ways off. So make it happen. Does Microsoft have a patent on “party chat/cross game chat?”

Has anyone tried this update???? it is ******* horrible. try it and you will get the whole star thing. They limit you to 20 ish characters so it is like the header for your im chat. It’s so so so sad! Please add the voice chat we ALL wan’t, and a Ton of dedicated server space so we can game without problems. I’d like to ask all of your posting a simple question. If sony offered a ton more ban width and all the chat features we need, would you be willing to pay $15 to $20 dollars/ year to use them. Also if they offered a patch that made All ps3’s fully backwards comp. would you be interested in downloading it from the playstation store for say $30??? If so post @ Stoddard56 yes and yes or whatever you feel.

I like the new installments. Can i buy the firmware in a store? Or download it on my PC then burn it so i can install it on my PS3? It takes too long for the system to download it online. I’m afraid that the electricity might get cut off temporarily and inflict serious damage to my PS3. Pls help…
I’m worried about the EXACT Same thing, don’t worry, if that happens, all you have to do is restore your PS3 so just back up all of your files before you do the system software update.

Cool new firmware update, though if a PS2 to PS3 controller adapter is plugged in during the flash, it can cause the PS3 to stop working or to freeze on occassion, I’ve heard. I had a Pelican adapter plugged in, and now I’m experiencing some freezing. I hope a fix is in the works.

The update made it impossible for me to watch videos stored on my Netgear ReadyNas. Very annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For all of the problems we’re seeing (ie bricked consoles, peripherals causing freezes, loss of support for previously supported formats) you’d expect there to be at least a, “thanks, we’re working on a fix.” No, nothing of the sort. 1631 comments and not a single reply from Sony. Way to drop the ball.
in all your reviews of the software you forgot to mention that the new update makes it soo you can see “in minutes or hours” the amount of time left that a download will take place. i think this helps greatly

Before the 2.5 update, I could turn on my PS3 using my wireless controller.
After the update, that function has been disabled.

What happened ? I have just installed v2.70 and everything has got TOO SLOW or just keep turning and turning or FREEZES. I can´t play anything, I can´t come back from reading a message, can´t see or update trophies. PLEASE DO SOMETHING (I MEAN v2.71) AS A MATTER OF URGENCY !
Texting with friends while playing a game??? This is totally useless!!! If I’m playing Hawx or Warhawk and am in the heat of battle, why in the world would I take my hands off the controller and start texting my friends? You simply wouldn’t. We need to be able to chat with friends while playing a game. When will Sony give us gamers feature that MS seams to easily do for the 360 gamers???
Xbox360 still has Chat throughout the entire system. PS3 could up that by doing the same thing but also allowing us to chat with at least three persons. What happened to skype for the
PS3. Wouldn’t that allow us to chat no matter what we are doing. On my iPhone i can chat and play at the same time. The PS3 uses some parts of Unix coding so does the iPhone and the xbox360.
On the iPhone i can play and still be on a phone call think about that Sony.
DULL I Don’t use text chat at all when i have the BLUETOOTH…With a voice chat you would’ve been selling a lot of bluetooth…It’s just a regression to a teenager thing texting with msn. I will still just be inviting people via crossmediabar. I don’t have the time to text while i’m playing killzone2 or COD online DAH!!!
I have 2 PS3. I have installed update v2.70 in both at the same time. Just left a comment (1636) as RaqPlay and I am back to say that problems are the same in both consoles. So, It might be happening to everybody. Just to correct one of the problems I mentioned, if you enter a message, you cannot reply, cancel or do anything. You have to turn the console off. Again, Sony, could you please bring back v2.60 as v2.71 while you work in a patch ?
Nice update BUT…. Com’on, when are you going to update the visuals for music play back? As far as the visualizations go what do we have currently, artistic nasa photos of the earth, kinda cool. Our own picture slide show, kinda neat, and those last two, too boring to mention. Don’t you think it’s about time to update or release something never seen before. All praise the people who develope the personal music visualization creator program. If its out there I will surely want to create my very own since SONY is not down with the thought.
I really don´t see the utility to show all XMB in-game, it´s a bad concept from the beginning.
While i´m in-game, i´m not going to use change local user list, settings list, photo list, video list, psn list….
The only things i wanna use while i´m in-game are game list and friend list, (music list if you finally add this option).
So, it´s time to start thinking about redesign the whole “in-game” thing.
Make it more useful please.

I have to agree there is no reason to show the whole XMB while in game all we need access to is the friends list and messaging system. OH…. AND GET CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT NOW OR IM DUMPING MY PS3 and going where the features are present that the gaming community wants.
