Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

I OWN, the PSP3000, Wii, PS3 and XBOX360. 90% of my time is on XBOX. More and more companies are leaving SONY.. because of guys like ERIC LAMPERT.
PS3 has better hardware.. but ERIC LAMPERT does not know how to tap into its capabilities.

… umm, ERIC LAMPERT still can’t figure out how to do PRIVATE, IN-GAME VOICE CHAT, GAME INVITES, MUSIC DURING GAME PLAY… and a CLEANER USER INTERFACE.
SONY, here is some advice, FIRE ERIC LAMPERT and invest in this OLD technology.

Instead of actually using our VOICE and talking about our strategy, I think it is cool to be DIFFERENT than Microsoft, so we allow our users to TEXT. This can take about 2 minutes to just TYPE, ‘Hey, you go to the right and get the bad guy, I will cover you!’; but I think it is a GREAT FEATURE for KILLZONE.”
What, is the guy that STUPID? TEXT CHATING during KILLZONE. Why did SONY buy the Developer for KILLZONE (Guerrilla Games), ERIC LAMPERT is DESTROYING IT! I can see it now, “BUY KILLZONE and you can TEXT YOUR FRIENDS DURING GAMEPLAY!”

When I see people talking about how great it’s going to be creating text chat rooms on their next-gen gaming system, the extent of their Stockholm Syndrome becomes apparent. They have begun to empathize with their captors. What normal people want is voice chat. And they want it inherent – available throughout the experience, an assumption. It’s entirely possible that Sony doesn’t understand the importance of the feature.
TEXT CHAT? LOL!!! I have NEVER used TEXT CHAT for ANY console… well, sorry I lied, I did for the first day, and then went to the store and PURCHASED a MICROPHONE!! WOW!
I have watch ERIC LAMPERT DESTROY the PS3 for the past year. Don’t get me wrong, I LIKE SONY, just not their ONLINE, NETWORKING experience, which is BASICALLY why people purchase the systems, to PLAY with friends and family, ONLINE!
So, ERIC LAMPERT, needs to, at the minimum, be a MAINTENANCE ENGINEER, better yet, LAID OFF!
Everyone, I mean EVERYONE says the 360 DOMINATES… DOMINATES over the PS3 multiplayer, networking experience. And ERIC LAMPERT puts out TEXT CHAT ROOM? LOL!!! Again, THANK GOODNESS I have the XBOX 360.. which me and the friends played on tonight.
IN FACT, we did play the PS3 for a bit.. but here is what we did.. We turned on the XBOX 360, and he sent me a VOICE CHAT invite, and then we talked over the microphone while we played the PS3, for all of about an hour. Cause that sucked.
SO WE USED the MICROSOFT VOICE CHAT while we played the PS3.. (LAUGHING).. HOW PATHETIC!!!

I personally think the txt chat is a stepping stone to the voice feature. As a test if people actually use it and the messages are recieved correctly, quickly then they will step it up to voice. They need to be sure the transport system is functioning then allow higher traffic.
I am experiencing issues with my controllers, noise on blue ray movies, no mp3list after playing a playlist, no option functions, even display button, and freezing since the update. I am not a gamer, but the in game private voice chat and music would be enjoyable when I do play.
In no way should our messages between friends be censored. If you don’t like what a stranger is saying block them. Excuse me while I go reboot my frozen PS3 (again today)

Congratulations Mr. Lempel. I believe that you are now one of the two most hated figures of the Sony PlayStation staff. The other would probably be Mr. John Koller. Could you and Mr. Koller possibly bite the bullet and let the more responsive (and more responsible) individuals in the corporation help out your company?

This update killed custom soundtracks in WWe’s Legends of Wrestlemania.
If you choose two wrestlers with custom themes, it only plays one theme.
also on a wired connection now, I keep getting kicked of the PSN.
This firmware update has caused my PS3 to stop playing ATRAC music files. It is saying “unsupported content” yet I ripped these using the PS3 and they were playing fine before. What’s going on, Sony?
I still wish they would add an update so that you can choose two options on the Audio Output Settings…and how about Netflix streaming…?

Not only is the new text chat ****ing *** in itself, it even lacks the basic functionality OF a text chat. what do we get, 20 – 21 characters at a time? Sweet! I didn’t have time to type anyway, I’M TOO BUSY PLAYING MY GAME!!!!
What else is awesome, well, the de-evolution of the friends list just rocks. Sure it already organizes my friends to their online and offline status so I can easily see who’s available, but now I have the ability to tuen it into a cluster **** so I have to dig to find them! You are true visionaries. I never would have even though of trying to ruin THAT specific feature.
Reading through these post (which is something YOU have obviously never done or there wouldn’t be sooooo many complaints) I’ve noticed that you have not only managed to add a bunch of new useless stuff, you’ve also managed to break a buch of stuff that actually DID work.

I don’t understand, this is not the best way to communicate so why give us this. What the people want is cross game chat, in-game, voice messages, etc…. So I have to pause just communicate with friends, c’mon is taking game experience away. My guess we going to wait until 3.00

anyone who cant take 3 seconds out of their game to look at the message will find it a problem, sure, but give Sony some damn credit for putting this together and making it work so well.

While it is easy to resort to name-calling and such to vent one’s anger, let’s all try to keep these posts civil and on point. That’s not to say there aren’t some SERIOUS problems with Sony’s management of PS3 firmware R&D and customer communication.
Franky, I believe Eric Lempel needs to step down as Director of PSN Operations. It is abundantly clear that he has neither the vision nor understanding of the competitive nature of this business to hold such a key strategic role within Sony.
He also seems incapable of even the most basic forms of customer service and communication. NO ONE with his level of ‘visibility’ to customers should be allowed to let +1725 blog comments from unsatisfied customers go unanswered. Seriously, not a SINGLE reply from Mr. Lempel after dropping this questionable 2.70 fw into his customer’s laps.
Please Mr. Lempel, step aside and let a more able person take the reins. This is not the job for you.

.Voice Chat: cuz is the only way to communicate and play at the same time.
.Backwards : Lots of people don’t make the jump to ps3 cuz they cant play all the games on the ps3 so they just wait until ps3 drop price..but if you put backwards they gonna sells their ps2 and buy a ps3 .
.Price: to be honest I’m okay with the 400 dollars but perhaps sony need to put some goodies like headset and hdmi .

Eric Lempel, I have an idea. The text chat is fine for now since it seems to be the only thing you guys could think of. How about in game chat where you can highlight which friend or friends to talk to and be able to hear them through your headset (not through the tv like socom’s stupis a**es)?
i’m just saying, it would really give the PS3 the edge it needs over the 360 if we could have that kind of in game chat where it didn’t matter if my friends are in Home, the same game as me or in another game as long as i have them highlighted (in case i don’t want to talk to all only certain friends) i can talk to them and it dosn’t mess up the game i’m in or their’s because its through the headset!
I agree with a majority of people saying they want “Cross Game Voice Chat” i agree with the “In Game Music” for every game…yes these are all great features…
I can honestly say though, “B I T C H I N” about it isn’t gonna do much, once things are noticed and resolved…sony/playstation will fix it…what was it “2.40” that froze and bricked ps3’s? they fixed that…
Be patient…things will happen, but being disgruntled on the blogs is no way to get these points accross to people…

This is a really cool update. I still really want the crossing of when I’m on YouTube, and when I go to a new window that the music dosent mute. that would be really awesome to have. And not just for YouTube, but for Pandora, and most audio software’s. I think this would be a great update, don’t you guys think so too?
please can you bring private chat to ps3 so you can have a chat with someone on your headset while playing different games or not in lobby, please please please!! !! !! THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please read and let me know if any of this is possible or even taken into consideration for the next firmware update:
1). The ability to use the In Game XMB for PS1,PS2, DVD and Blu Ray titles!
2). The ability to own not just rent HD movies on the Playstation Store!
3). The ability to have more options to choose from on the Visual Player not just the current 3!
4). In Game Chat with a highlight option to select which friend or friends you want to talk to and be able to talk to them no matter if there in Home or another game (through the headset)!

Hi eric, about the update i think your hard work is paying off. The backing up feature is awsome. I just stream media from my pc anyway. But now you can back them up give me reason to purchase now. before no. Hope it changes a few other peoples minds. The text chat, not so gr8. Now, i just pause my game press ps button, go to friends list and send a message. We dont need chat rooms. We got home. That was funny. New screens for audio player would have been better than that… and cheaper. all around 8/10 for the update and keep up the gr8 work. I know i appreaticate it. You hit the nail right on the head with movie backups great feature. Now the text chat is garbage. You can’t pause online so why stop and text just to die? You have to wait until you respawn or the match is over thats not good. Also going back and forth is not what i want to do while gaming esp. online but the campaign pauses so thats fine. The Friends list is so messed up and not even alpha. no more why? Generally we need voice chat because its faster and easier to talk. I hope it comes soon because people will not use text chat unless they are playing campaign not online.

well its nice to see so many people demanding in game voice chat..a feature that the ps3 should of launched with…like kmbold i too use my xbox 360 to chat with my friends while playing my ps3 nearly two years later..my friend asks me do you think there will be a day when we dont have to use the xbox 360 to “PRIVATE’ chat on the ps3…my reply to him was yea when we have flying automobiles..ahahaha lame i know but seriously sony i have been waiting a long time for private chat..i thought it was coming with the in game xmb nope…i thought it was coming with home..nope and now this text chat…really?? sigh

– Much faster browser ( modified ”Firefox 3” or a ”Webkit” based engine for example) with much more plug in support (Quicktime etc.)
– Back up the entire Savedata map (now you must copy/back up savefiles one by one)
– Faster load time of the XMB in a game.
– Auto sync of trophies in the background.
If only the half of the list will be added in the near future…..I’ll be happy

Thank you for creating us this senseless update, which makes more trouble than new features.
This is the first time i really got disapointed.
1st:
What the hell is happenend with all my AAC music files on my hdd, which i encoded with lots of time? Why i can’t play them anymore?!
Do i really need to reencode them to mp3?
2nd:
why so of my divx files doesn’t run anymore via media-network?
3rd:
why you put a chat function, when i just can write lines of maximum 20 chars. This doesn’t make sense for me.
And the most stupid thing:
I use the XMB in german, and when i write some german words into this chat line, i get on simple words (for eg.) as “nicht” , which means in english “non” or “nothing” a censoring (*****). Damn, i didn’t know that “nicht” is a dirty word in germany.
I know many people did mention this points, and i want to mention it again, to make sure you Sony staff read this disapointments as many times as possible!
I think, we can wait one month longer for an update without problems. We are not on hurry, but Sony seems so!
Now we have to wait for the reaction,
A proper 2.71 could be the first step!
