I just read the interview with SCEE President Reeves on gamesindustry.biz
I did fear this could happen, no price drop in EU and only a temporary price drop in the US, till all 60Gb units are sold out.
But I just can’t believe you really do intend to do it!
The problem for the gamers still sitting on the fence is the high price to get into the PS3 experience. Not everyone wants/needs 2 controllers without rumble feature. Not everyone wants Motorstorm and Resistance.
You should let them choose for themselves and bring out the 80Gb PS3 for 499$ or even less in the very near future. If you just drop out the 60Gb version and let the 80Gb bundle for 599$ be the only alternative, it will be just like raising the entry fee by 100$ again and that’s just crazy, makes no business sense at all…at least not in the uncomfortable position Sony is right now.

You do a great E307, but somehow mange to screw it up a little with doing some strange things.

What if Sony when finish phasing out the 60GB version, decides to price the 80GB at $499 instead. Now would’nt that be reasonable.
Because an $80 GB 2.5 SATA drive only costs about $59.99 and i am sure Sony gets it cheaper from the factory.
Anyway Sony i aint leaving you but you got to do right by us who have been defending you throught the year i am having a headache. E3 was great.

We’ll see in one or two months what will happen with the PS3 prices.
I hope they just want to get rid of the 60Gb versions before announcing the 499$ price tag for the 80Gb version a little bit later.

Then you will notice another fact about the 60 gigs and the compatability issue with the 80 gig.
for now its better to buy the 60 gig and later when the compatability through software makes the 80gig better they will lower the price of that

just checked out the Store (Europe) and there are loads of trailers from E3 but no playable demos, well, there’s Nucleus… bit of a shame really, Sony could have given us at least one kick ass demo to play. more ammo for the 360 fanboys i guess. and for those moaning about the price, the PS3 costs $800 in Europe, so you Americans should think yourselves lucky!!

He might have made some good points about the PS3 really being the future and that new ip content is what will grow the market nothing we havent heard already but to say things about the 60GB before you make any statements its as if he is trying to undermine you Jack. Skip up ahead to about 1:40… Kaz himself confirms that PS3 is $600 and that the 60GB is out of production ALREADY. I’ve been a Sony supporter since the launch of Playstation 1 and now selling my PS3 for good. Goodbye fellow Playstation fans, it’s been a great decade of dominance.
Thank you for the update on the Playstation store on Thursday. Truthfully it wasnt what the Playstation community really wanted, but there’s one more day of E3, so who knows, I have faith in you guys to take care of your customers.
On a side note, say whatever you want, you guys did a great job at the E3 presentation. You guys seem to be rather approachable people which is cool. Oddly enough, I have the urge to hang out with Phil Harrison at a local pub and have a beer with him. It would kick ass, seriously.

You can buy a 60gb PS3 and stick your own 120gb hard drive in there if you want, its not the end of the world really.

What I don’t understand is that people weren’t buying the PS3 before at $599. Everyone, from publishers to retailers, was telling Sony that they need to drop the price of the system.
So Sony does, but only to clear out current inventory. After that it’s back to $599 which is back were we started: people aren’t willing to buy a PS3 for $599.
I mean… it just boggles the mind.

You all jacked up BIG TIME. First Reeves interview along with his submissive and yet traitorous comment about Nintendo being the reason the gaming business is where it is at today (WTF?) That doesn’t help the PS brand AT ALL. Then Kaz tells us the consumers respond mostly to 1 SKU rather than 2? You people are discontinuing the one thing that could’ve boosted the install base.
You tell your users that you give them options and yet you REMOVE any options other than the most expensive version. The 80gb is a piece of junk. 20 more gbs is NOTHING. You removed the 20gb version because you thought that people didn’t want it, well people didn’t want the 60gb that much more simply because there isn’t anything on the system really worth having right now, especially not over what the competition has. It’s cheaper to upgrade to a higher HDD on you rown. You all just killed the great news that had people wanting to buy a ps3 now.
You will never gain a profit if you all keep this up. Software sales are dismal as can be for ps3, so no gain there. It’s not attracting more support for the platform. We have plenty 1st party games coming, a few timed exclusives, and not much else. You guys need a reality check on what consumers and developers want.
Now unless you all are placing a stand alone 80gb in place of the current 60gb, you’re in for a backlash.
Sony, you had better clarify what is happening with the PS3 IMMEDIATELY!!! If you lowered the price to $500 for a 60 GB PS3 only to take away the price drop a couple of weeks later (for an SKU that is cheaper for Sony to manufacture) for $600, the PS3 has just lost the console war. This is a disaster if true. Please clarify that you haven’t ruined the future of the PS3. It was finally at a price at which it was starting to sell…

Why are europe being treated like a joke. The market is as big as the US shown by similar PS2 hardware sales (with more potential growth) and yet we’re being treated so poorly.
The reason behind low PS3 sales in the UK is not because we don’t think we get enough for 425, its because 425 is not enough.
The latest bundle is rather ridiculous and the reasoning behind it is worse.

I think the biggest point about the two SKU’s that Sony is missing is that the 20gb version didn’t sell for a REASON; THE 60GB HAS MORE USEFUL FEATURES! This 80gb version DOES NOT. It comes with 20 more gigabytes and a copy of Motorstorm. That is NOT a compromise that people would like to make.
Who cares about adding more GB to the system? Sony really needs to focus on keeping the price point where it is for now so they can continue to rake in the customers. That’s what ANY successful business would be trying to do: GAIN CUSTOMERS, NOT LOSE THEM.
But I forgot that Sony is run by monkeys who are out of touch with the very people that sign their paychecks. DO NOT RAISE THE PRICE AGAIN!!!

While I can understand how you would want to minimize the bleeding on hardware, killing any chances you have of maintaining good public PR and increased sales (doubled according to Jack Tretton) is NOT the way to do this.
If indeed you read all the comments like you guys mentioned towards the beginning of this blog please speak to this issue, because people aren’t going to stand for it.
I’m sure as hell not buying one if this stands because I didn’t plan to do so until at least August when I feel I can afford it.

Okay, don’t jump the gun here people. There are two things confirmed here, David Reeves is a PR disaster and the 60gb unit is going but that was inevitable since it’s a waste not having the extra 20gb on the platter. Two things unconfirmed now, the 80gb bundle will be the only available PS3 and will stay at $599 or it will drop to $499 when the 60gb is gone. Now, if it is the first one, that would literally be the biggest mistake ever with the PS3! I don’t think it is when the other option, the price drop of the other unit makes much more sense. Obviously you can’t announce the new bundle will drop in price when the 60gb unit right now is selling at $499 as it would not make people buy that version as they would wait for the better version. Same deal with the new rumble controllers.
David Reeves made a huge mistake and will now cost Sony a lot of sales either way. Granted, not as many if the price of entry for a PS3 stays at $599 but sales would already be low if that was even true.
K .. i really think SCEA should step up today and just clarify all of this … just when momentum was going our way too .. i hate corner offices!
I don’t think they can or will either way.. It will just be “Our pricing structure is always changing and we want to pass savings onto the consumer.” That is probably the best answer to give, again assuming the number 1 thing I said isn’t true.
I made the following point on another story of Sony’s so I’ll just quote it here and save keystrokes…
“WTF? ARE YOU SERIOUS!? What you Sony guys should have done is slowly phase out the EE chip in the 60GB PS3s, therefore making them cheaper to produce and give you (possibly) a continued profit into the holidays. WHen holiday time comes, THEN phase out the 60GB PS3s and lower the price for the 80GB PS3s. That way, you’d have your larger hard drive space satisfied and us consumers continue to get our cheaper PS3s. Makes sense, right?
But for the love of all that we believe to be holy, don’t shoot yourselves in the foot! Introducing a lower priced 60GB PS3 for the sole purpose of clearing out the inventory for a higher-priced, larger hard drive model won’t work! You guys tried something similar before w/ the 20GB PS3s, look how well that turned out for you guys.

PS: Some news sites are reporting that the 100$ Price drop on the 60gb only lasts for a certain amount of time, then all you will sell is the new 80 GB pack. Can you confirm or deny this?

I feel sorry for SCEA in a way, Mr Reeves’ and Mr Hirai’s interviews really have left you guys looking rather silly after your on stage announcement about the price drop of the 60GB, forgot to announce that there would be no further production of that SKU from thereon.
I think you guys need to come forth now, put that MotorStorm 80GB bundle in at $549, not $599, then once the 60GB units have all been sold, bring a barebones 80GB SKU in as the sole SKU at a price of $499. Everyone goes home happy. Save face Sony in this matter, if you bump the price back up to $599, there goes all hope for you this gen I’m afraid to say.
