  • Sony, omg omg omg lol. Seriously though, if you are actually going to keep the 80gig at 600 bucks, wow. Then I guess this will be the end of the Playstation as we know it.

  • Just to clarify something about the demos.

Like someone said, they sell the games. Third party titles, well, we don´t have much choice.

But first party, I think we only need a…

“You know guys, we would like to give you Demos, but for us is better to have the title ready faster and demos take too much time to make”

    Or even a…

“Demos are only for private stuff. You won´t be getting anything”

So we could stop asking for Demos. I don´t mind not having any demo, but if we have no response is like they are trying to do something but they don´t tell us what is the problem.

And I say again, I don´t mind having any demo. Is nice to test the game but at least they gave us trailers in HD give us something new every now and then.
I would rather have updated features or some answers to our posts that a demo.

    And I am honest.

  • Also, DEMOOOOOOOOOOOOOS!

goodbye E3 hype, we barely knew ye! Since y’know, your back to 599

  • Sony, you came through from the conference as pretty much the leader, now, I’ve been hearing rumors that say that you’re getting rid of the 60GB model once they’re gone. Were you to do that, your fans and prospect buyers would be left with the same conundrum, 600 bucks. Please do not get rid of the 60GB model. I love that it’s cheaper. And at the moment it has hardware emulation.

  • wow…i feel sorry for the people that work at sony. Do a price drop and then do the best E3 show…and then you get a bunch of people yelling and screaming,[DELETED] and whining…I wonder if the Xbots do this much complaining about their system…

  • Great press conference. I bought a PS3 early and it’s been a nervous series of months for me wondering if the system will make it or not. I would say things have finally turned up for PS3.

I don’t think I need to explain to you though the potential damage you will be doing your sales if the 60GB supply at 500$ dries up. Unless of course the plan is to drop the 80GB price to 500$ as the 60GB supply dissapears?

Either way, I think it’s been proven that people don’t want to pay 600$ for a dedicated gaming console, whether or not it’s worth the price.

  • And then how the hell can you get away with bumping the price back up when your Blu-Ray players are cheaper than your video game consoles that are also Blu-Ray players? FOUL!

  • Ohh come onnnn guysss

The reason why people chose the 60 GB model over the 20 Gb model was because they had so many differences. Wifi (Which also did not let you connect your PSP), card reader and so much HD.

Now you have that for 100 less. If people decide to spend 100 more on 20GB (Nothing) and a game is their choice. It just a starter pack. You still have the choice to buy it without the bundle.

The price HAS DROPPED. Cut that.

  • People can find deals on HDD’s and copies of Motorstorm anywhere; what you’re going to effectively be doing is eliminating the choice to the consumer when BY THE RECENT SPIKE IN SALES HAS SPOKEN THAT THEY ARE FINE BUYING THE PS3 IF IT IS 499. You are going against what your customers are saying by making them do something else. Not cool.

  • This is very dissappointing considering on how well Sony’s E3 press conference was. I for one, didn’t think things would end up like this. Once I heard of the price drop, I was so excited,(still am cuz I’m buying one tomorrow!!), but for those who weren’t planning on buying one till later this year at the price of $499 should be really pissed. And even for those who were early adapters, seeing the price go back up to its normal state. Because they will see PS3 right where it was when released.

The sales alone on Amazon show how well people received the price drop, why stop now?? Why!!!? When you still have the chance to dominate this gen, you decide to back up, and just hand it right in the hands of Nintendo and Microsoft basically. And with horrible news like this, everyone can count on now not even having MGS4 as an exclusive to the PS3, as Konami may even announce that they will release it on the 360 BECAUSE Sony decided to discontinue the 60GB model and make the 80GB model the standard at the $599 price point. I truly hope Sony does not continue this plan. Keep the 60GB model in the market, and just make the 80GB model a limited edition, as the box says, and advertise the crap out of the lower price one. Come on Sony!!!

  • After all this stuff about keeping MGS4 exclusive to the PS3 and you guys do it. Still not enough! Price drop, not good enough! Even tho I agree that you SHOULD NOT get rid of the 60gb…I still feel bad for you guys just cuz you guys do what people ask and still get $h1t on! I KNOW! heres how to satisfy EVERYONE

    1) PS3 FREE FOR EVERYONE!
    2) BUY EVERY GAME FROM EVERY COMPANY AND KEEP EVERY GAME EXCLUSIVE TO THE PS3
    3) DEMOS, DEMOS, DEMOS! EVEN THE GAMES YOU NEVER MADE YET…WE WANT THE DEMO OF THE IDEA THAT YOU GUYS HAVE THAT HAVENT EVEN LEFT YOUR HEADS
    4) GIVE EVERYONE A FREE 1080p LCD HDTV!

yeah…maybe after all that you guys can satisfy everyone. As for me and some other people, we’re happy with the progress you’ve made. Thanks Sony for pulling off the MGS4 exclusive, the HD video game trailers, and for making a system that will never break even if my house imploded upon it.

  • Sony is really hestating with any word on this “pirce cut” stuff. God damn you must be stupid Sony. And to even think that you want to compensate with a 80 GB HDD.

After a huge hype about the PS3, you just killed every good word. F you Sony.

  • Yes, emphasize the limited edition part, but MAKE SURE you keep a version that the consumer will gladly pay for. Granted, there are 3.5 million people who have paid 600 or more for the system, but just look at what a 100 dollar drop did to your sales in the past 3 days! They are selling out at an amazing rate!

  • @258

Im amazed that Sony things they can go on like this. 500 is what the consumer would pay at MAX on average.

Man I feel embaressed on behalf of Sony.

Great games, great show. Fatal PR slip.

You better re-think what the hell youre doing Sony. Right now anything anybody would buy is a 499$ PS3. 599$ continuation is REALLY pushing. Dont kid yourselves.

  • *REALLY pushing it

  • rukusa, it isn’t confirmed true, I know this is a bad decision either way but if it isn’t true, it is only David Reeve’s fault for creating a disaster. He shouldn’t have said anything, all of Sony can’t be blamed for this (hopefully) mistake.

  • If the 60GB version is out of production, how long will the Europe and Australian bundles last for, because they are all using the 60GB?

My guess is that they want people to get out there and buy those 60GB machines. If you say they won’t be that price for long, then everyone will snap one up. That will look good on this quarter’s financial report and make for good piechart showing at TGS.

I agree that PS3 sales will tail off but tail off before November, but will pick up again as we head into the holiday season when new PS3 games are due to ship. Families looking to buy a new system around Christmas time will say, “Ok I can buy a 360 + a HDDVD, but if I buy a PS3 it comes with a Blu-Ray player. 2 bits of hardware Vs 1. The TV area is cluttered enough as it is so I’ll just get a PS3, cause that does games and movies in 1, after all it is Christmas.” It will be seen as that luxury item that you will fork out a bit extra for just for Christmas. I think that from March 2008 that is when we will see PS3 sales start to seriously compete against the 360, especially if Microsoft has not solved it’s reliability issues. Coupled with the fact that you can access all your files (media and other wise ) on the move, via a PSP, for me makes it quite attractive.

  • I don’t think this is the time to be saying how stupid Sony is, and how they managed to mess everything up. All the hype that was built up during E3, with the price cut, and the new PSP model. Sony is still the same Sony. There is no need to be cussing them out now, after they’ve managed to come so far. Maybe they haven’t done much, but hey, they still got a long ways to go. I believe Sony has something up their sleeves in feeling so confident that they will be the leading console by March 2008.(That was also stated by Reeves). Thats why I’m not bashing on them by no means.

This is showing truly who are the loyal customers of the Playstation brand. Everything has a purpose, and thats how life is, and Sony obviously is not going to just sit back and bump the price back up to $599 without having a plan to follow immediately to win the holidays, and become the leader by mid 2008. Think about, I’m sure Sony is loving how well the Ps3 has been selling at the price of $499, and they will want to be there again. They know, that when it goes back up to $599, the sales will begin to slack, and then after that there will probably be the announcement of something we didn’t know…..Sony knows their own future.

  • @ K

It is true that Sony has not confirmed, but I don’t know if anyone has noticed this. When I went to gamestop.com and clicked on the PS3 60GB model for $499, and checked for availablity by typing my zip code, it shows how many systems each of my local gamestops have. In addition to that, it says whether or not there are more on the way . And at all of the gamestops, says a big fat NO. Has anyone else tried this? What do they list?

  • for video proof, here is Kaz Hirai stating it ON VIDEO. No more of this, “David Reeves doesn’t know the US”.

  • @thechosenfew88

Great post, but I think the ONLY thing that will sell more PS3’s than Wii’s is a smaller price tag. Doesn’t matter about the games because if people can’t afford the console, then they don’t need the games.

  • I feel bad for you guys at Sony. You’ve given us gamers what we’ve wanted for so long that you’ve created a generation of spoiled brats.

A Heavenly Sword Demo is coming this month, as confirmed by PS3 Fanboy. Sony gave the best E3 ever. The begged-for price cut is given and selling like wildfire.

So now that it’s selling like wildfire and that model is being sold out, Sony has supposedly messed up again according to the brats.

You complainers make me sick sometimes. Sony has never given us reason to doubt their track-record—so give them a chance. Sheesh.—–12

  • @265 They can’t say that there will be an 80gb version at 499 when they have a 60gb version selling NOW at that price. But I am done doing damage control here.

  • @TheTwelve

We are not spoiled. Just a FYI since you can’t read….Sony is discontinuing the 60GB PS3, leaving the 80GB bundle as the only PS3 option. And take a guess at what the price of that bundle is going to be? $599.

The price cut was just to clear out the stock of 60GB PS3s. it was not a permenant price drop.

Now, do PS3 owners have a right to be mad now? Sony has just RAISED THE PRICE OF THE PS3.

  • All the whining Sony saw of early adopters begging to get something free for buying the PS3 at $599, has convinced them to raise the price back up….LOL! I’m just messing. Thought I’d drop a little joke since everyone seems so mad…

  • @eclipsed4utoo

They will probably drop the price of the 80 gig after they sell out of the 60 gigs because in the 60 gig 600$ bundle they include another controller and the motorstorm game. You take away the controller and the game and bam you have $500 again.

  • @ Halo_343

Sony has something planned.. We just don’t know it. Something like you mentioned is possible.

One of the things that Sony has planned out, is to tell everyone the 60GB will no longer be available, so everyone rushes to buy one. They all sale out. Great sales for pie chart at TGS(as someone mentioned already.) After that, they price of the 80GB lowers to 499 and thats the standard. Good way to boost sales huh..?

  • @Halo

We can only hope that Sony will offer the 80GB as a stand-alone purchase for $499 and the bundle for $599. But I am not going to be optimistic that this will happen.

  • @Eclipsed—

You must be one of those brats I was referring to; thanks for identifying yourself.

Do you think you know more about the market and demand than Sony does? I guess you do.

PS3 owners don’t have the right to be mad because….they already have a PS3. Funny to me how you seem so concerned about the price of a console you already have.—-12

  • BREAKING NEWS: SONY DISCONTINUING THE 60GB PS3!

Although I’m skeptical that Sony could be this foolish, this is apparently straight from the horse’s mouth.

Once the 60gb PS3s run out of stock, they are going to be discontinued! This is a quote directly from SCEE President, David Reeves.

Quote from article found on Gamesindustry.biz:

“All they’re doing is taking their stock in trade that they’ve got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.”

When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, “In America, yes.”

That means everyone needs to tell their friends who want PS3s for $499 (instead of $599 for the 80GB model coming out soon) had better buy one now!

Also, everyone should know that the new $599 80GB PS3 model will NOT have the PS2 emotion engine built-in, which means not only will it be more expensive, but will have far inferior backward compatibility as compared to the original 20/60GB models.

    Full Article:
    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26704

  • “Far inferior backward compatibility”….

Says who? I’d need some more info on that.—-12

  • I have the Europeran 60Gb version (No EmotionEngine) And apart from Guitar Hero every single game I tried worked just fine. So BC aint much of a problem.

  • @TheTwelve

I guess you would rather have 3 million possible users to play against rather than 20 million possible users to play against. I guess you would rather have ZERO third party exclusives.

Yes, I already have a PS3. But does that mean that I shouldn’t care that future PS3 owners are going to get screwed? no. I care because those future owners will help us keep the exclusives we have, and possibly get more.

  • I’m glad to see that many people are as perplexed by this move as me. As I said in the other topic, people want lower prices, not more GBs.

How many months of low sales will it take Sony to realize something so simple.

People who need more space can just go buy a HDD themselves.

  • @JDPoZ

    You’re a little late there

    @thechosenfew88

Yes, that does sound like a great way to boost sales, but there will probably be a lot of bad press about this.

    @autoeclipse4utoo

I am pretty sure they will, Sony has made mistakes before, but they aren’t retarded.

  • @JDPoZ

“That means everyone needs to tell their friends who want PS3s for $499 (instead of $599 for the 80GB model coming out soon) had better buy one now!”

Thats exactly what Sony wants you to do. They have everything planned out IMO. Once they run out, they will lower the price of the 80GB model to $499 having fooled everyone who went to the store to pick one up before they ran out of the 60GB model. Thats the only logical thing I think Sony would do at this point. Sony knows keeping the PS3 at $599 no matter what it comes with, will not sell and not lead them to dominance over their competitors. I’m falling to it though, because then again, I could be dead wrong, so I’ll make sure to pick one up tomorrow…. :-)

  • @Eclipsed—

You seem to be speaking in very extreme terms out of fear. Sony is the master of their own destiny. You seem to be listening more to what Konami and Square say about Sony than what Sony says about themselves…

ZERO third party exclusives? Did you watch E3?

Sony will get their 20 million, no, 100 million gamers like before. Sony is not rushing this race like Xbox with their broke-down consoles, nor are they undermining the race by being cheap and fruity like Nintendo. By March 2008, Sony will be outselling both (perhaps not the Wii, but soon after).

Sony would not make any business move without being sure that they are capable of doing so. I don’t understand why you think you have grounds to think they will just suddenly commit suicide here.

    Relax.—12

  • @TheTwelve

Owners of a PS3 care about their “investment”, if the sales keep as low, where do you think third party developpers will concentrate their efforts?

On the 360 of course with it’s huge owner basis…oh yes the games may well come out on PS3, but they won’t be optimized for this console and could look worse than the 360 version or come out later.

Sony need to widen their owner basis fast, we’re not in 2001 were the PS2 was the first on the market (besides Dreamcast of course…)

  • @Halo_343
    Oh, sorry.
Didn’t read the other 200+ posts.
Probably should have checked before posting…

  • @TheTwelve

Look. It has already been seen for the past 8 months that a $599 PS3 WILL NOT SELL. Sony dropped the price, and BAAM, it’s already sold out on Amazon and in alot of retail stores.

Many publishers have stated that $599 is too high. Publishers/Developers will not make exclusive games for a console that has a small userbase. If Kojima wasn’t the GOD that he is, MGS4 would be getting ported to the 360(it’s rumored that Konami is trying to force Kojima to port it, but he refuses to do so).

What I am saying is, Sony has a great thing going with the $499 price. If they end up only selling one PS3 SKU at $599 again, they will be committing suicide.

  • Eclipsed—

It’s almost as if 20gb more of memory means nothing, nor does a Motorstorm game. Remember that this comes with the new model too?

But see, this means nothing to YOU because you probably haven’t used all of your gigs to feel the difference, and you probably already own Motorstorm.

We as owners have completely lost our ability to see the point of view of non-PS3 owners. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can.

You forget that the PS3 has sold 1/3 of the amount of their competition, and Sony is just getting started. After Lair comes out, we will have high-profile games every single week after that until I don’t know when, and you’re saying that sales won’t increase?

    That’s just not logical.

I mean, if Sony blows, it, Sony blows it…but sheesh, can’t you at least wait until Sony actually blows it until you speak doom and gloom on them?

    —12

  • This move of exchanging the 60gb model with the 80gb has to be the most stupid move ever or the most clever one.

    There could be two possibilities:

    1) Sony wants you to buy RIGHT NOW the 60GB and as soon as they are discontinued, they release the 80GB model cheaper and release a 120 model at the price of the 80GB, and so on.

    2) This is THE most stupid move ever.

  • I am speaking into existence that the price tag of $599 will never appear again on the market to purchase a PS3. Sony is clever in what they are doing, thats why I took these news that everyone sees as bad, as something to give me a sense that Sony knows what the heck they are doing. I have so much confidence in knowing Sony will lower the 80GB model to 499 once all the 60GB models run out. Does anyone agree with me?? If not… guess I’m in my own little bubble with Sony.

  • I am getting so pissed off.

    I don´t give a [DELETED] of E3 right now.

You better have answers. And good ones.

  • You guys can’t be this f**king stupid. If this is true then you’re setting Sony up for one of the worst PR/business disasters in the history consumer electronics and video games.

THE AVERAGE AMERICAN CONSUMER DOES NOT FIND ANY VALUE IN THE $600 PRICE POINT OF THE PS3 WHEN A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE CAN BE HAD FOR LESS WITH MICROSOFT’S XBOX 360.

You had better have some good answers for this, otherwise you guys just made yourselves look like a bunch of chumps.

  • Sony
Your E3 conference was amazing. I was extremely pleased with your conference and I thought I could buy a PS3 finally when Heavnly Sword comes out due to the price cut. The very next day I stumble upon news that you guys are phasing out the 60 gig sku. I am very disappointed. I do not want motorstorm and extra 20 gigs for extra 100$. The 20 gig sku didnt sell because it didnt have some features that 60 gig had. But the 80 gig is exactly the same with just the hard drive difference. If we want we’ll put a larger hard drive. You should not be trying to increase the price of PS3 but reducing it. The 80 gig sku is a very dumb idea and you guys should be trying to reduce the cost of 60 gig sku. Instead you are only increasing it. The 60 gig is futureproof right now and u can introduce sku’s with larger hard drives after 2 years or somethin. Right now reduce try to reduce the cost of PS3 instaed of increasing it. I thought you guys finally knew what consumers wanted with the price cut and all. I guess I was wrong.

  • Whine and cry, Blizzard.

Of course Sony wants people to go nuts over the 60gb…and they are. They will a lot more now. And perhaps if the demand for that model is high enough, Sony will keep making them. Give them a chance. I’m sorry, but…based on Sony’s track-record, you would have to stupid to start calling Sony stupid. Can’t you see beyond your nose?

    —–12

  • Why is everyone apparently giving up on Sony? Are we the loyal customers we once said we were. Not only was it annoying having 360 and Wii owners bash the PS3, but now having to put up with people who critisize and bash Sony on their own blog! Whats wrong with you people..?

Sony can’t be that arrogant to still say we’ll still sell our system without games. We clearly saw that at E3, their main focus was on delivering quality games this year and next. (And of course, until then). What needs to happen, is to have people go out and buy the 60GB model, so then we can know Sony’s further plans. Something is telling me that Sony will not leave a $599 model on the market alone. But of course, they wouldn’t want us to know that. So they said what they said. Stop complaining everyone, and watch Sony run the show here. The war just got started baby!!

  • @TheTwelve

20GB means NOTHING. after formatting and Sony’s OS taking it’s share, You will have less than 70GB of space.

    Try this:
    80GB PS3 = $499 (going off the 60GB PS3s price)
    MotorStorm = $60
    Total = $559

but the bundle is for $599. Are you trying to tell me that 20GB costs $40?

And yes, I do know how non-PS3 owners feel since I just bought my PS3 on Wednesday.

It can have all the games in the world, but people do not want to pay $600. Hardcore gamers will, but the casuals won’t.
