  • Whats the deal with the price drop Sony, its not really a price drop if you’re not going to have that SKU to sell. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot,

come out with a statement on the blog.

  • @TheTwelve

I guess Sony built this Blog to get answer and feedback from their customers.

Well, from MY point of view, I WON¨T be spending 100 dollars on something that it is not worth it.

If 60 GB is not enough for you, neither will be 80GB. If they were 120GB, thats another story.

  • If you stop production of the 60gb at 499, you will lose to Microsoft! Why would you do something so idiotic? After a good E3 and price drop soaring sales, why would you go and screw over your consumers? Nobody is going to buy a PS3 just because it has Playstation in the name! Oh well, enjoy your sales going back into the dump.

  • If I were Sony, I would leave the bundle ideas to the retailers, and just release a system at the most suitable price for consumers. If people do want to get a bundle, then Walmart, Best Buy, and so many other retailers offer great bundle packs. Heck, even gamestop/EB themselves offer bundles that are worth getting. PS3 needs to find its way to have a core model like the PSP. And Sony are the only ones to guide them in that direction.

    @Danrider

Thanks for the link. Glad to hear great news about the rumble featured controller. Then again, I stand by my statement strong regardless of all this thats going on, Sony knows what they are doing… No doubt about that.

  • @TheTwelve,

Sony’s track-record has indeed shown us that they are more than capable of pulling of stupidity of epic proportions. “Riiiidge Racer”, “$599 US dollars”, a closed format called UMD, the debacle of the PS3 launch, etc.

The powers that be at Sony need to understand that they are playing with fire here and that more negative PR against the PS brand could harm it beyond repair.

Sony is VERY luck that Microsoft built such a shoddy product in their rush to be the first to market.

  • Eclipsed,
With a bit or research (Amazon.com) you’ll see that 20 gb costs around 100 bucks in many places. Funny, the Xbox 20 gb HDD costs 90 bucks, yet you whine about 40. —12

  • RIIIIIIIIIDGEEEEEEE RAAACEEEEEERRR!

  • WHAT? you guys are pulling the 60 gig model and only selling the 80. That not s price drop idiots. God WTF, how are you guys so stupid. $599 is too much. Guys are killing yourselves. If this isnt true then you guys better say something cause the press is gonna have a field day

btw release some damn demos. live has like 4 and we dont get squat

  • I guess this means that the original PSP is going to be taken out behind the shed and shot in the face as well huh?

Gotta keep that $199 price point because a 90% increase in sales at $169 might actually pose a threat to the DS!

  • (this is fun)

Nismo, you’re once again looking at very recent information that hasn’t played out. You’re forgetting that Sony is the father of the best-selling system…ever.

I can run around and make logical arguments as to why the PS3 launch wasn’t a “debacle” and even with the UMD, but I’ll suffice to say that you’re view of Sony’s track-record is extremely short in terms of history. Try going back a couple of more years for a better and fairer picture.—-12

  • BETTER HAVE A PRESS ANNOUNCMENT VERY SOON SONY

clarify, or all you did a e3 will be ruined by the press with rumors

and fire that loser from europe, ill gladly take his job

  • @TheTwelve

Maybe you should be the one to do some research.

    60GB 2.5″ SATA 5400RPM drive – $50 – http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149054

    80GB 2.5″ SATA 5400RPM drive – $60 –
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136099

now tell me again how a 20GB increase in HDD space is $40?

  • Sony how can you say that you lowered the price of the PS3 if all you plan on doing is killing off the 60 gig PS3.

The thing I hope you do is come the Holiday Season is make the 80 500 then.

  • Supposedly there IS a demo…Nucleus anyone? XD

You guys did say ANY demo…altho I think we meant any as in Lair or Heavenly Sword :-P

  • or uncharted. :)

  • I just heard the news about getting ride of the 60 gig model! WTF say it aint so Sony. I dont even want the 80 gig, lets hope that this is just a big rumor!

  • @TheTwelve,

The PS3’s launch was a failure. First they didn’t have enough consoles to go around on launch day which caused all of the riots, violence, and other related carnage. Then they somehow managed to overproduce enough consoles to where it became laughably easy to find one only 3 weeks later. I won’t even bring up “Tretton’s $1000 challenge” a month later.

With regards to how short my view is on Sony’s track record, let’s just say that I have first hand experience with their loss to JVC and VHS and leave it at that.

  • Bad PR move sony you guy are trying to [DELETED] this up! Please dont I love sony

  • Bad PR move dont mess this up sony.

  • Whatever…another person claiming to be something over the internet.

    *rolls eyes @ nismo*

The PS1 and PS2 had launches that were less than desirable in many ways too…

…it’s not how you start. It’s how you end.

    12

  • Thanks for the great photos! I’m digging the new blog very much.

One thing for the PR dept. though, please clarify the statements by SCEE president David Reeves about the 60GB PS3 in the US…

  • You guys know what sucks…when xbl gets demos for games that are also on ps3 and we don’t get jack. — The Bigs is one added to that list.

  • What in the world do you think you are doing sony sales are flying high with the $499 price tag and then you go and discontinue it. Most People like me don’t care about a bundle we want the system to sell so you better rethink the decision and drop the 80(personally i tink it should be 120 gb) down to $499 if you are going to do away with the 60 gb. I am an early adopter of the ps3 since december but I want the system to sell. More sells means more of install base which means more game devs will work harder with the ps3. Use your head sony.

  • It is evident that Sony is seeing something that we can´t see. Although 90% or this Blog thinks the same way..

    We are wrong, right?…Right?….

    Right?…

  • @Nismo

Whats your debate over Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? You fail to high light the successes Sony has had/ and have, and only bring out their failures. No company is perfect throughout the products they release. Look at Microsoft for an example.

PS3 wasn’t a failure to make that clear to you. Compared with its competition, it wasn’t/isn’t doing too well, but thats because of one obvious reason we can think of, its high price and the lack of games(but that will change of course). The PS3 is selling well considering at what price its at, and people still buying it. The PS2 didn’t have an impressive line up of titles when it first released, but only as the months and years progressed, we started seeing the fruits of the PS2. Same will occurr with the PS3. It’s just a matter of making the right decisions and having a mind set of taking over the market offering the consumers what they want. Which is of course, quality games and not like the ones releasing on Wii just to take advantage of Wiimote receiving mediocre reviews. And an affordable price above all!

The comment you posted on this blog has no point to it, and has no truth behind it. Sony is still dominant in many areas that you fail to realize. I would consider stepping out of your fanboyish bubble and facing the reality. What is the reality you may ask yourself..? And I will say the reality is, Sony will once again be crowned as King of Consoles AGAIN!

    -The Chosen Few-

  • From the mouth of Peter Dille, Sony’s senior vice president of marketing for PlayStation:

“I don’t want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they’ve never done either. They’ve never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they’ve never had a tail. They’ve never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn’t exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said ‘we’re out of business, we’re moving on.

With the Xbox 360 you’ve got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don’t, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn’t even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don’t think that’s a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I’d put that up against the PS3 any day.”

YES SIR!!! PREACH ON MR. PETER DILLE, PREACH ON BROTHER!! by the way i want to be able to change the background on my PS3, please make it happen.

  • WE NEED DEMOOOOOS

  • For gaming sakes… dont take away 60gb…………………….. maybe take out 20GB but not the 60GB DAMN IT.

my friends are just planning on getting a ps3 within a few months, by that time, that model will be gone, they already swayed when they heard this news.

you already made a step forward with a price cut but this new model is sending wrong message to consumers.

  • Good move, Sony… Way to do some good and then take it all away. If every Ps3 owner is an elite owner in your eyes, what does that say to the PS3 owners holding discontinued models? 20 gig… dead… 60 gig… dead. Real Elite, Sony… Real, friggin’ elite. Don’t make a mistake… You’ve already sent your lap dogs out on MS in a wr of words with that Peter Dille guy… This is just stupid what you’re doing. Just stupid. I’m no business man and I’ve got a Ps3 already, so I’m speaking as an average consumer… Don’t drop price and the drop the system you droped price on. What an idiotic move.

  • Sony, you better be listening, cuz now your playing with fire. $499 was your best friend, $599 will absolutely destroy this system, no matter how many games come bundled with it.

  • if you dont have the 80 gig model for 499 by Christmas than your freaking stupid and will get destroyed by nintendo and MS. quite deservingly so too

  • on another note, remember EA is taking most of their sports titles down a notch to 30 fps on PS3, this quote for the guys that make PGR4 makes me wonder about why EA is doing this. It may be a good thing:

“We looked at that,” commented Adam Kovach, PGR 4’s global product manager during an E3 demonstration. “We debated for a long time… we looked at what we would be giving up if we tried to go to 60 versus 30 frames a second. We don’t want to lose the visual fidelity… we made a conscious decision that 30 frames plus all the effects in the game was far more important than having a pure 60.”

If this is the case, then it says that EA just hasn’t figured out how to truly work the PS3 yet, but they put a bunch of f/x’s in and the best way to notice it is by dropping the frame rate. If this is true then all the sports titles should look better on PS3. What do you think

  • I think that sony is doing a good job @ E3 . My only beef is that besides Erich no one else really seems to give a crap about this blog.

  • Kratos_ate_Snake

Man, so many comments, and not one response from sony. How busy with E3 can you really be?

What the hell is going on with all this 60gig talk. Sony consider yourselves stupid if you drop the 60gig and don’t at least drop the 80gig down to 500. Are you trying to fail this generation on purpose?

Just when everything starts going good for Sony (minus the PSN sucking and all) you guys go and screw it up with this lame announcement.

I support Sony so I gladly spent 600 on my PS3, but in case you have not learned anything this past month, no one alse wants to pay 600 for the PS3!

  • @ indigovenom ea is going to make the ps3 the base platform next year so I would say that 60fps will happen with next years games.

  • Fellow gamers chill. All is not lost. Sony will prevail. There is this crazy God of War spin-off in the works.

  • @thechosenfew88

I think that Blu-ray has been a great success for Sony and will fully obliterate HD-DVD by December 2007. This is primarily do to Sony including Blu-ray in all PS3s.

The flip side of that is that HD-DVD would already be dead if Sony hadn’t dropped the ball with the PS3’s weak launch. Furthermore Sony has had to drag the PS brand through the mud to make it possible.

I own a PS3 and overall I think that Sony puts out damn good products, however I also recognize the fact that Sony is ran by people and people are fallible.

The $599 price point was a mistake and Sony’s unwillingness to leave it may come back to bite them in the ass. They had better have a good plan because they are playing with fire atm, IMO.

  • seriously, how hard would it be to put up just ONE of the many demos that were playable at E3?

if someone at sony could just answer us and tell us why there’s no demos…at all… then i would feel a lot better becuz i would know that we weren’t being ignored

also, i seem to remember when PSN first went up there were lots of demos, so i’m pretty confused

  • @ Nismo

I agree, putting a fat $599 price tag was indeed a mistake, but they seemed at the time to just take a risk of how it will do. Seeing that it hasn’t been doing good compared to its competition, it would be even a more foolish mistake to keep it at that price, after they’ve announced the $100 price cut. (Sorry for being so direct and rude first time).

Hopefully Sony has a good plan as you’ve stated, and will not continue to drive themselves in a bigger hole than what they are already in.

What is kind of annoying, is how we post questions and questions about the same thing, and yet we get no response, but the two guys are over at joystiq in an interview,(Tretton and Kaz), and yet, no reason has been given for the news that has been released today regarding the 60GB model being discontinued.

  • @ChikenPac

the Heavenly Sword demo is on the Europe PSN.

  • @Destroyer41139

I hope all developers start workin on PS3. Although it would spell the end of 360, because games would start being to big for dvd. Soon most games will be on two disc for 360. And if they ever want to get a game like KillZone, that will be like 4 disc. I can’t wait for that publishing contract to run out so we can get GOW. Probably will get it in a 2pack with Gears of War 2

  • Sony hasn’t released any news about discontinuing the 60 gb version. To all the people believing what they are reading from 360 fanboy websites they neeed to get off and stop passing negative bs. This was a great E3 for Sony and you going to come on here with nothing thats a fact. Only thing you could really be mad about is the fact of a atleast one demo not being released on the PSN.

  • You know, I think that maybe if Sony drops the price once again for the 80GB model after the 60GB model runs out, it maybe be good since the price would be the same.

But here is the problem. They can not keep the PS3 for 500 all the time. Eventually it will have to be at a smaller price.

And what are they going to do there? Offer a special bundle with 2 games, 2 controllers and the bluray remote?

Excellent move to drop the price of the 60GB. Stupid move to discontinue the model. Is like saying “No, we don´t like this model anymoe. Please buy it quickly so we can take advantage of the most expensive one, and the one who give us more profit”

Because I don´t buy the idea that it is the same.

  • @Xenochaos805 right from Kaz Hirai: $499 SKU is just temporary

need more proof watch this video http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235

  • Deny it or not…the news of the $500 PS3 going away has sucked the life out of the after-E3 sony rules sails.

The internet is abuzz with Sony hate again.

Sony what the heck is going??

It took quite awhile to get back into the good graces of gamers and now you shot yourself in the foot.

News of 360 price drops have hit the net today..news of 400 Elites.

Gaming forums are flooded with Sony hate once again..

    Damn guys…just damn…

  • Ok i am back. Did some thinking.
Sony this is just an idea. How about you put 20GB HDD in the chrome model which as we all know will now emulate PS2 games. No problem we want to play PS3 games more now anyway. And offer HDD upgrade kits.

If this is done should’nt the price now be at $399.

    lets see:
    PS3 20GB for $399.

We are not blind to what you guys are trying to do. But Moving from 60 to 80GB is only an HDD swap. The PS2 chip is out ok so backwards capability is 88% who cares as long as we are able to play from god of war 2 and up no problem. But just please put 20 Gb in the new sku instead if it would help the price. 20GB is still really big. Most of us will be too busy playing your fantastic games that video downloads wont be big just yet.

  • @PKM

totally agree. There have been no Sony bashes in the media for the entire week. The first time that has happened since what..E3 of last year? It seems like Sony doesn’t want to get on the good side of the media.

I don’t know what the deal is.

  • Kratos_ate_Snake

There is no Heavenly Sword Demo up on the European store, is there? I don’t see it.
