I agree to that, but Europe doesn’t really matter as much as North America. Since PS3 is basically neck and neck with 360 in Europe, it only needs to win North America to overtake 360…
The LOGICAL thing to do is:
1.Clear the retail channel of the ton of existing 60 gig units and introduce the new one.
3. Introduce the new limited edition SKU with the new drives and a packed in game, cut the 60 gig price so that (they hope) it flies off the shelves.
4. When the 60 is no longer easily available to consumers, the pack in goes poof and the 80gig is sitting at $499.
Jack Tretton needs to clarify this ASAP. If the PS3 is 499 today, the price can’t go back to 599.
Just explain this Mr. Tretton, confirm that the PS3 will NOT go up in price.

He won’t. He lied to us… Well he didn’t, but he didn’t tell us the whole truth either. PS3 is still $599 and on the way to becoming this gen’s XBOX… *weeps a tear for the downfall of the greatest game console*
By the way, the move you are making in America is just a bad! A couple of days ago you were making a big announcement $499 for a 60 GB PS3. The 80GB was only for the people who are taking intense use of the PSN store (a bit hard because there isn’t much content), but now it turns out that the 499 dollars for the 60GB is limited, just till the stock runs out of the normal 60GB version. And the more expensive 80GB is gonna replace the 60GB. This means that you lyied to America and the rest of the world!!!! The so could ”price-cut” in America was just a farce to look good at E3. A really really really bad move Sony. You damaged the trust of a lot of Playstation fans. This whole story is really gonna back-fire at you. I think a lot of people are gonna switch to the 360, because they are tired of this game. The 360 is much cheaper and has a great line-up this year. PS3 has a better line-up, but the price is really an issue. You lyied Sony and people are not gonna forget this.
I think it would be good if SCEA came out and cleared this thing up quick before it gets out everywhere, it might do wonders for short term sales, but SCEA is going to cause a lot of anger amongst people who were looking to get their PS3 at a later date this year if true.
I can understand the phasing out the 60GB and bringing the 80GB SKU in it’s place, but please don’t raise the price back up again. Would be unwise.
Australia is getting ripped off as well, don’t forget the little guy Sony!
If I bought my console from the U.S I would save $400!!! that’s $400!!! that’s a weeks rent down here and cheap to.

The 80GB is gonna replace the 60Gb model. BUT, the point is: it should cost 499 and NOT 599 with a game, when 60GB is not available anyomre.
This is the logical thing to do. NOT maintain only the 80GB with a game for 599. After the 60GB, 80 GB should cost 499.
If not, SOny just screwed again. They had a beautiful showing at E3, and then they screw up with this bs of only having a PS3 at 599… again,
Sony, what are you thinking? You just followed up a great E3 with a self-defeating move.
Do not raise the price back up. A lot of us have been waiting for a price drop, and are planning to buy one by the end of the year.
We DO NOT care about an extra 20 gig’s, we want a cheaper console.
If you replace the 60gig with the 80gig and keep the price at $600, I will not buy a PS3 and many others will refuse as well.
If you keep the price high, adoption rates will stay low, and companies like Kojima Productions will start abandoning ship and making their games (i.e. MGS4) multiplat.
Get rid of the Motorstorm bundle and give us a $499 console. Or get rid of the 80gig model and keep producing the 60gig.
But do not raise the price back up to $599.

Sounds fishy to me. This guy doesn’t exactly know what SCEA is doing which is sad for the company if they are not comunicating. either that or he is trying to calm down consumers in the UK. Whatever it is, it sounds like SCEE is trying to compete with SCEA like they are selling two different things. The way he speaks sounds a little condecending. Hopefull SCEA wont do this, and i don’t think they are being that Kaz is backing the sales, but if they are I hope they will drop the 80gig price or at least try to get StarCraft II on PS3, would be nice :)
I agree. I’m sure not only I, but Sony supporters around the world feel betrayed as well. Thank you for making us losing consumer confidence after building it up greatly with E3.
Jeez, people, this isn’t even an official announcement and you’re throwing a fit over it. Why don’t you wait until Sony AMERICA says something on the matter before jumping to needless conclusions.

Howard Stringer even admitted that if they lose this gen, it will be because they positioned the PS3 as the “Mercedes” of the videogame industry.
So knowing this full well, WHY KEEP POSITIONING THE CONSOLE AS THE MERCEDES OF THE GAME INDUSTRY?

Look clearly at the bottom, it says that it is LIMITED EDITION. Meaning, the $600 PS3 will no longer even be included in a bundle. All that happened was $600 for 20 more GB… This is truly disgusting Sony.
No, we are not taking what he said out of context. He clearly states that once the current stock of 60 gig’s runs out, that’s it–supply of the model to NA will stop.
I seriously cannot believe how foolish this decision is. The most important objective early on in the console race is to capture market share. Sony’s direct competitor–Microsoft–has benefited the most not from its own efforts (which are admirable), but from Sony’s behavior of repeatedly shooting itself in the foot.
A bundled Motorstorm will not drive market share. A price drop will.
At the very least, test out how well the 60gig sells at the new pricepoint vis-a-vis the 80gig before discontinuing the 60 gig altogether.
The 80G will probably be priced at $499 without the bundle… 80GB HDDs are cheaper now to mass produce than 60GB HDDs.
It’s pretty clear to me that the 60GB SKU will be phased out, and just the 80GB SKU will remain.
BUT… when this happens, the 80GB SKU shouldn’t cost 599 like David Reeves is saying. The PS3 should NEVER, EVER be 599 US dollars again.
We all want the PS3, we wnat it to succeed, but damn Sony, you’re shooting yourselves with this 599 again for a PS3.

As far as I know, this is the only place where Sony representatives might listen to our opinions.
When everybody complained about the lack of HDMI in the 20gig PS3, Kutaragi added it in. Now we need to make a bunch of noise about the elimination of the 60gig, or else the following is likely to happen:
1) PS3’s price will remain high, and potential consumers will remain disaffected.
2) Seeing PS3’s stagnant sales, companies like Konami and Square Enix will revoke exclusivity for major titles like MGS4 and FFXIII.
3) With the major exclusive titles gone and an imposing price, consumers will turn to cheaper alternatives like the 360 which offer them the same quality of experience for a lower price.
So keep posting your disappointment with this decision in every new entry on this blog until Sony listens to us!
no but that is why you should go by one now if that is true. anyway, YAY!!! DIRT demo coming the the PSstore maybe next month but for sure before the game is released in September. YAY NOTIFICATION OF SOMETHING GOOD!!!
WHAT THE **** SONY?! WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS? The whole reason people were excited is BECAUSE you dropped the price to 499. We don’t want bundles, and we DON’T want the old price scheme again! Why oh WHY? PLEASE tell us at least the 80gb version will stay at 499!!!
I don’t really understand the idiocy behind this move. Sony, you have regained a lot of fans with the price drop and the system is selling admirably now. But if you proceed with this news (and holy hell will it spread across the net… it has already), you will be setting yourselves up for the ultimate failure. People will be even less inclined to even give your “truths” a second look because they’ll be more likely to have the train of thought that you will lie to them again. DON’T DO THIS!!! FOR YOUR OWN SAKE!

I agree with everyone else. Keep the 60GB around at the $499 price tag or when it’s discontinued, move a bare bones 80GB model onto the market. Whatever you do, don’t let the $599 model end up the only model on the market *AGAIN*. You, as well as all of us, know how sales are at that price.

Sony, you had such an amazing E3 and it looked to everyone like you were finally starting to get in touch with your fans. Now to smack your potential customers in the face because of your greed is unacceptable. I have been a loyal PS fan ever since I played the first playstation in a target way back when, and have stuck adamantly by the decision to defend your name from naysayers and fanboys who always have something bad to say about you guys. However, with this news, I cannot and will not put up with it any longer. If you go through with this move, i’m afraid i’ll have to gladly join the arguements against you, Sony, for you will have brought all the negativity upon your stubborn little heads.

You know what, I was thinking about Friday the 13th soon after Sony’s conference and how something could go wrong for PlayStation fans seeing how well this E3 went. Prove me wrong and address this info as ‘FALSE’ please.
Not reading every comment and skipping those about SCEEs interview, but I’d like to add:
You had live demos, running on PS3s at the show. Would it really be that hard to upload 2 or 3 of those to the PSN?
We want demos, we’re ready to accept them even if they are incomplete.
After all the excitement of the price drop and a amazingly done E3. Now Sony would just smash the face of everyone that supporting them all these years once again. Even loyal fans are being loyal but does not mean the others. The people still not yet picked side will be stay loyal. Your successful campaign in just this week had already strike in many audiences heart already and I had so many friends want to buy a PS3 just because how awesome this week is. For us to have a choice, for us to have a better chance to fight this console war. A price drop is needed. I sure no one would mind you have both 60 and 80gb around so people can pick and choose. Even the combo idea is awesome just if you put resistance in there instead. But the interview I just saw totally broke the morale of all the PS3 fans. Especially the one that still picking side. You need those people to help. All I know is a formula. If the console sold of PS3 is increasing. It means more people will at least buying few games. The higher sales on all these console will inspire third party developer to create games for PS3. Then you guys will make your money back. I understand you guys got pressure from the board and stock holder. But you guys just have to have confident on the wonderful console you guys had create. It can gain back grounds just because how amazingly you guys do this week. Just keep it up and keep the 60GB here. For all of our loyal PS fans and for the future of gaming.
I really don’t see the reasoning behind these SKU’s with bigger HDD’s when Sony themselves state IN THE PS3 MANUAL that you can just swap out the HDD to a larger one. WHY ARE WE GETTING THIS BS?
