PS5 Beta introduces 1440p support, Gamelists, and more

System software beta kicks off today for invited participants in select countries.

Since PS5 launched, we’ve been listening to your feedback and working every day to bring you more community-requested features. Today, we are rolling out a new PS5 system software beta that includes 1440p support, gamelists, and additional updates to enhance your gaming experiences and make connecting with friends easier on PS5.

While beta access is limited to invited participants in select countries*, our goal is to bring these updates to our global community later this year. If you’re selected to participate in the beta, you’ll receive an email invitation when it’s available to download today. As always, some features available during the beta phase may not make it into the final version or may see significant changes.

Here’s a look at some of the new features:

New Gameplay and Personalization Options

  • 1440p HDMI Video Output
    • The PS5 beta introduces support for 1440p HDMI video output, enabling players to choose an additional visual setting on compatible PC monitors and TVs.**
    • If the game you’re playing supports 1440p rendering you can experience native 1440p output on your display.
    • Or, if you’re playing a game with a higher native resolution like 4K, then you may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling down to 1440p output.
    • You can check if your HDMI device is compatible by selecting “Test 1440p Output” under “Screen and Video” options within system settings.

  • Gamelists
    • In your Game Library you can now create gamelists, which make organizing your games even easier.
    • To start, go to the [Your Collection] tab and select [Create Gamelist]. Choose games to add to your gamelist, then decide what to name it.
    • You can have up to 15 gamelists and 100 games per gamelist. All games under the “Your Collection” tab of your Game Library can be added to a gamelist, including disc, digital and streaming titles.*** You can also add the same game to multiple gamelists.

  • Compare 3D Audio and Stereo Audio
    • You can now listen to and compare the difference between 3D and stereo audio on the same screen, and then choose your preferred setting.

  • Easier Access to In-progress Activities
    • When resuming a game, in-progress activities are often shown prominently at the top of the game hub to make it as easy and as fast as possible to get back to where you left off.

New Social Features

  • Request Share Screen
    • You can now request party members to start Share Screen to watch their gameplay. Go to the voice chat card, select the party member you want to send the request to, and then select [Request Share Screen].

  • Joinable Game Notification
    • When you join a party and a party member is playing a game you can join, you’ll now receive a notification. You can join the game directly from the notification.

  • View New Friends’ Profiles
    • When you accept a friend request in the [Received] list, you can now view your new friend’s profile in [Accepted Requests].
  • Send Stickers and Voice Messages in Game Base
    • In the Game Base card, you can now send stickers and voice messages to your groups.

We’re always grateful to our beta community for helping us take new console features for a spin. Thanks to all our players for your support and feedback!

*PS5 beta access will be available to selected participants in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany and France (same countries as our last system software beta).
**1440p compatible TV or PC monitor required. Results may vary depending on the game being played. Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.
***Streaming only available in select countries/regions with PlayStation Plus Premium. For details see here.

  • Is there any word on a Discord app?

  • Of course Sony does this when I sold my 1440p 165hz monitor, I have a 4K 144hz one now but Sony should’ve had these features from start.

    • I can’t sell mine. Hyped!

    • Yeeeeeah I’m sure the invisible difference, especially in the zero games that run at either one of those framerates, will be staggering.

Good GOD the technologically ignorant are funny.

  • just registered, wish i can get involved in this beta

  • 1440p support…finally 🥲

  • Does anyone think we’ll ever see the 32Gbps HDMI bandwidth cap removed via a software update? Or better yet 120hz, HDR and 4K with RGB, instead of YUV422?

  • If the “folders” are not in the dashboard I don’t see the point. They are useless to me outside in the collection screen. An extra step moving to another screen just to have access to this feature that was so convenient on the PS4’s main screen. Try again.

    • Agreed. It’s nice to have. But weird that they knew what we wanted on Ps4, then just decided to not do it on their next console

  • The “Game Lists” sound pretty good, although I would have preferred classic Installed Games folders.

Here are my suggestions for improvement for future PS5 system software updates:

    New features:

    – Dolby Vision for gaming (available on Xbox Series)
    – Decrease disk drive volume/speed when starting console and starting a game (like on Xbox One/Series)
    – A feature compared to Microsoft’s “FPS Boost” (available on Xbox Series)
    – Automatic updates of all games installed, not just last 10 played/installed (available on Xbox One/Series)
    – Create a possibility to manually check all installed games (incl. external drives) for updates at once (available on Xbox One/Series)
    – Enable controller updates without a cable connection (available on Xbox Series)
    – Add an icon directly to the trophies, settings and storage management in the Control Center
    – Add a menu item to end a game in the Control Center
    – Show controller battery status in % and not just in 3 bars
    – Remove the PS Store Wishlist limit of 100 entries
    – Remove the PS+ cloud storage limit of 1,000 files, so 100 GB of storage space makes no sense
    – Bluetooth support for headphones / headsets
    – Create the possibility to use the microphone of the controller, but still output the voice chat via the TV

    Bringing back old features:

    – Create a possibility to sort installed games according to your own needs e.g. with folders or groups (available on PS3, PS4, Xbox One/Series, 3DS, Wii U, Switch) => the announced “game lists” could do that
    – In the options/context menu for the installed games in the library show the same options as on the home screen e.g. the option “check for updates” (available on PS4)
    – Bring back the activity feed (available on PS4, Xbox One/Series)
    – Change log (update history) for PS5 games (like PS4 games)
    – Themes/Themes/Wallpapers for the home screen (available on PS4)
    – An option to set the number of games on the home screen to unlimited (available on PS4)
    – A search function in the game library on PS5 (available on PS4), on the web PS Store (library.playstation.com) and in the PS App

    fix bugs:

    – Increase the battery life of the controllers back to what they were before the controller update in early 2021
    – Fix the bug that often the playing time is not counted in the profile
    – Fixed the bug that the PS4 label is not displayed in the profile on the PS5 for PS4 games
    – Implement an M.2 SSD benchmark that displays correct values and can still be executed after formatting
    – Fixed the bug that soundtracks, artbooks etc. are not shown as such in the profile on PS5, as opposed to when viewing the profile on a PS4
    – Fix PS5 Games Saves PS+ Sync error

    Trophies:

    – Bring back the trophy “ping” sound
    – Save the sorting of trophy lists (available on PS4)
    – Jump to the current game when opening the trophy lists in the list (available on PS4)
    – Make the trophy tracker transparent and as an overlay element so that the screen is not clipped when tracking (available on Xbox One/Series)
    – Track trophy progress for each trophy, not just a few (available on Xbox One/Series)
    – When getting a trophy, not only the name should be displayed, but also the unlock condition (available on Xbox One/Series)
    – Remove the trophy level cap from 999, the world’s top trophy hunters would already be at level 1800+

  • Took a little longer I would have liked but at folder are finally here. Now for themes to comeback and that’ll be it for me

  • Wow, 6 years late to the 1440p party. But better now than never. Nice.

  • Thank you!! Hopefully we get the update soon

  • I just need to get my hands on a PS5 to enjoy the console.

  • I appreciate how often Sony is putting out updates for the PS5, and they are all updates with features that I use every day on my PS5.

  • Really excited for these updates! But why is VRR not supported for 1440p? :(

  • AmazingCass_2019

Game Lists are awesome sounding – right off the bat, I plan to make one for my ridiculous Resident Evil collection. I have everything from RE Director’s Cut PSone Classic thru the PS3 titles and unto PS4 remasters, and finally PS5 native games for RE2 Remake, RE3 Remake, RE7 biohazard and Village.

  • Still waiting for the ability to disable tiles going to the left of the list after use. I hate my games getting pushed to the side by the gallery tile every time I look at a screenshot.

  • The main thing i want to see is the abiltyto play ps5 games off of external ssd hardive like we can with ps4 games.

  • Bravo Sony!!!

Now I can finally make a trophy room, with my platinum games.

  • Can we get a way to sort our trophy list? Alphabetically and by trophy progress?

  • Can we get a patch so we can sort our trophies by game? I’ve been collecting trophies ever since Burnout Paradise was patched with trophy support & from the time between then & now I often go through my trophies to see what trophies I’ve earned & the dates I’ve earned them on & it’s getting really annoying having to scroll for a long time through hundreds of games until I can find the right one.

  • I curious why the 1440p mode doesn’t support VRR? Is there a technical issue or is it just plain laziness on Sony’s part.🤔

  • Can you please let us check for updates on the games that aren’t on the main scroll bar? On the PS4 we could go into the library and manually check for updates on any game we had installed.

  • Any plans for Dolby Vision support or at least HDR10+?

  • Sony, PLEASE let us use streaming services as Picture in Picture while we game.
I want to grind in games while watching Netflix or Disney+ OR Youtube in a corner at the same time. PLEASE !!!
    Also add and Discord app…

  • This seems like a great update ! Looking forward to it. Only thing I would add is the ability to alphabetize your trophy list. It’s something we had on ps3 but for some reason haven’t had it since. SONY can you please give us the ability to alphabetize trophies ! ? Thank you

    • Sony likes to take away features to add them later to make it a “new” feature again

    • Definitely, it’s super tedious to find game trophies now. We need an alphabetical list option and some filters

  • I can finally create categories for all my PS4/PS5 games? Yay! I’m really big into that. I love organizing my games. I’m not sure how many categories I’ll have to make on PS5 though. On Steam I have too many to count and on Xbox Series X I have 33 groups/gamelists, but then again on XSX I have 490 owned games and over 300 Gamepass games. But you say that PS5 will only let you make 15 categories/gamelist? Hmm… Hopefully that’s enough. Been waiting for this feature for a while on PS5. Thanks Sony!!!

  • Thank you for listening and adding these much requested features.

The only remaining features that I would like to see added are:
    • FreeSync
    • Backup individual game saves to external drive

The latter one is essential. The ability for a user to not lose their game progress in the event of a device failure should not be behind a paywall. Otherwise, make cloud backup free of charge/PS+ not required. On Xbox and Steam cloud backup comes standard for all players. No subscription required.

  • Can you add, when a trophy is unlocked and it says the name of the trophy, instead of clicking the ps button to find out what it was unlocked for, would be nice to have it shown on screen, instead of it saying trophy earned, its annoying pressing the ps button, so much easier having it all on screen together. Thanks

  • This is happening sooner than I expected. Awesome.

The only thing I’d want added is FreeSync VRR support. Songs VRR update doesn’t work with my TV, but Xbox has no issues. I’d love more parity.

  • Also to add to my previous comment I know for a lot of people this wont seem like anything exciting or something Sony should do but I’m just throwing ideas out there to try and get the ball rolling. How about a TROPHY ROOM?? a space similar to the trophy room that was found in Astros playroom where you can actually walk around and look at your trophies in a space that’s more then just a list. for example the user and can download this app from the store that is saved to the hard drive. the app then places your games in small areas that you the user can walk around in using Astro, you the user can decorate and organize using items you’ve unlocked through completing trophies. so as an example say your playing resident evil 2 you walk over to the little space that’s been created for resident evil 2 and your able to unlock say concept art that you can put on display while you look through the trophies that you have completed. the little rooms that your trophies sit in can be themed around the game so again to use resident evil 2 as an example the room could look like a SAVE room from the game that maybe you have concept art on the walls and can sit at the desk and go through a scrap book that has your trophies in it. just a thought, but honestly id like a way to better engage the player with trophies being some kind of interaction to it if possible. anyways ill stop rambling now. take the idea SONY if you’d like its there if you want it

    • Great idea.
It could be a personalized museum. Astrobot is a tourist and guide, controlled by the player or guest.

There should be a large picture on the wall, showing which trophy it is. You all know that there is a special picture for each trophy.

Below the picture is the date the trophy was won, and the name of the game.
In front of the large picture there should be a pedestal, on which the trophy is placed.

The entire museum can be edited by the player with various accessories that he won or bought, collectibles, etc…

The museum should be displayed with a special image, for example a capital M or a museum icon, and should be on the home page of the user profile.

  • So when do we have 3D audio for home theater systems since we can’t get Dolby Atmos? Also game folders are good but should of been there from the start. Idk why features are taken out then made new again on new consoles.

  • Also can we not lock games behind the PS Premium subscription. I can’t even download Resident Evil Directors Cut even though I have purchased it back on the PS3. And there’s no option to purchase it since it’s locked behind the subscription.

  • This is great, but what happened to tempest audio for 5.1 and 7.1 sound systems? It was talked about months before the PS5 being released and we never heard about it again.

    • Thank you! Someone else has talked about it. The sound settings for the PS5 don’t accommodate for a 5.1.2 setup with heights.

  • I’ll never use any of these features. UI needs revamping. Trophies are even worse now they’re horizontal again. First click gets you that ugly separate “card” that insists to start tracking, then you have to ‘View All Details’ to read the actual full trophy description. Can we finally get the option to delete games from trophies? And better contrast between trophies earned and not, the little striped background you added does little to differentiate between both. I also hate those ‘mandatory’ descriptions in the upper right corner, like when you mute your mic, make those optional? Dynamic themes would be nice too.

  • How about you let me pop in a ps1/ps2 disc and play it, if your emulator plays it fine, if not then I’ll play it elsewhere, but I don’t need to pay again for a game I own just for you to add trophy support. Give us the emulator we all know you are holding hostage. Yes, to the haters , I could go play it on my ps2, but sometimes it’s nice to have one system that’s already plugged up and pop in an old game for a couple of hours.

  • Any chance for “FreeSync over HDMI” support when connected to supported monitors/TVs?
AFAIK XBOX Series does support it, why not PS5? Especially since 1440p support is a clear opening towards gaming on monitors…

  • congrats sony on new beta some good features including 1440p at last..

  • 1440p support is the only update I’ve been patiently waiting for. Thank you for finally supporting it. My ps5 will actually see some use.

  • Cool. Is lists like PS4 folders? I finally managed to get myself a PS5 the other day and was a little confused I couldn’t arrange all my games into managable groups like I could on PS4.

    • So weird that they went backwards. PS4 players begged for folders for years. Sony knew that’s something we wanted. Then their next console they just remove that feature and add it 2 years later? Weird.

  • Please add Dualshock 4 compatibility to PS5 games.

  • Tell Psyonix to add supersampling to Rocket League on PS5, or just do it yourselves (like on PS4 Pro?)

  • Nice. PLEASE add the option to “check for updates” to games installed under “Your Collection”, just as if they were on the main screen.

  • Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.

There’s always a catch! lol smh.😢 Oh well, i’ll cry about it later but i’ll take the 1440p update for sure.😊 Been asking for that. Folders update(game list) is nice too.

  • Now we just need VRR with FreeSync/G-Sync support because kinda a shame VRR doesn’t work on anything other than HDMI 2.1

  • Good features, next add Themes, I want to use the game exclusive themes I got with releases (Nier,FF7R,Star Ocean etc) with ps4.

  • Playstation: If your going to announce this you have to support all monitors that support native 1440p, not just for 2.1 monitors

  • And 1080p monitors supersampling?

  • Love these new enhancements and features; PlayStation is truly the best place to play.

    Playstaaation! 💙

  • I don’t even use it but it’s just daft how long you’ve taken to add 1440p support. Loads of PC gamers actually bothered to buy your console for the exclusives and if their 1440p gaming monitors don’t support a 4k input to downscale to the screen then they had to settle for 1080p. Xbox has supported 1440p since the Xbox One S, you’ve had no excuse to have it missing for such a long time. People are buying your expensive machine and keeping you in business, the least you could do it have such a simple thing as a resolution output available from the get go. Hell even the box for the console was a lie from the start saying 8k on it when the console couldn’t output that either.

  • Some things I’d like to see.

Auto updates to work on more than just the games that are on the recently played list. Seriously.. Why does it not even check for updates on any titles that aren’t on list..

Ability to manually check for updates for games not on recently played. Just like auto updates, can’t even manually check for an update before launching game first and moving it onto recent list.

Fix the bug where if you are at 4k, bluray player does NOT switch to 1080p/24hz output, instead it stays at 4k/60 or 4k/120, which doesn’t allow tvs (even your own) to do better quality processing of 24hz content. I have too manually change consoles to 1080p first before opening blu ray player, THEN it’ll change to 1080p/24.

ACTUAL support for 5.1.2/presence surround sounds. It doesn’t have to be dolby atmos if you really want to be cheap about it,, but to have software that can only detect 5.1.2 as 5.1 or 7.1 is annoying. I have to set it to 5.1 otherwise it’ll treat it wrong as a 7.1….Worse still, I only get 5.1 watching blu rays instead of true 5.1.2 because system again cannot be configured as a 5.1.2.

  • Can Game Lists be seen on the home screen or just in the library?
