PS5 Beta introduces 1440p support, Gamelists, and more

System software beta kicks off today for invited participants in select countries.

Since PS5 launched, we’ve been listening to your feedback and working every day to bring you more community-requested features. Today, we are rolling out a new PS5 system software beta that includes 1440p support, gamelists, and additional updates to enhance your gaming experiences and make connecting with friends easier on PS5.

While beta access is limited to invited participants in select countries*, our goal is to bring these updates to our global community later this year. If you’re selected to participate in the beta, you’ll receive an email invitation when it’s available to download today. As always, some features available during the beta phase may not make it into the final version or may see significant changes.

Here’s a look at some of the new features:

New Gameplay and Personalization Options

  • 1440p HDMI Video Output
    • The PS5 beta introduces support for 1440p HDMI video output, enabling players to choose an additional visual setting on compatible PC monitors and TVs.**
    • If the game you’re playing supports 1440p rendering you can experience native 1440p output on your display.
    • Or, if you’re playing a game with a higher native resolution like 4K, then you may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling down to 1440p output.
    • You can check if your HDMI device is compatible by selecting “Test 1440p Output” under “Screen and Video” options within system settings.

  • Gamelists
    • In your Game Library you can now create gamelists, which make organizing your games even easier.
    • To start, go to the [Your Collection] tab and select [Create Gamelist]. Choose games to add to your gamelist, then decide what to name it.
    • You can have up to 15 gamelists and 100 games per gamelist. All games under the “Your Collection” tab of your Game Library can be added to a gamelist, including disc, digital and streaming titles.*** You can also add the same game to multiple gamelists.

  • Compare 3D Audio and Stereo Audio
    • You can now listen to and compare the difference between 3D and stereo audio on the same screen, and then choose your preferred setting.

  • Easier Access to In-progress Activities
    • When resuming a game, in-progress activities are often shown prominently at the top of the game hub to make it as easy and as fast as possible to get back to where you left off.

New Social Features

  • Request Share Screen
    • You can now request party members to start Share Screen to watch their gameplay. Go to the voice chat card, select the party member you want to send the request to, and then select [Request Share Screen].

  • Joinable Game Notification
    • When you join a party and a party member is playing a game you can join, you’ll now receive a notification. You can join the game directly from the notification.

  • View New Friends’ Profiles
    • When you accept a friend request in the [Received] list, you can now view your new friend’s profile in [Accepted Requests].
  • Send Stickers and Voice Messages in Game Base
    • In the Game Base card, you can now send stickers and voice messages to your groups.

We’re always grateful to our beta community for helping us take new console features for a spin. Thanks to all our players for your support and feedback!

*PS5 beta access will be available to selected participants in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany and France (same countries as our last system software beta).
**1440p compatible TV or PC monitor required. Results may vary depending on the game being played. Please note: VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.
***Streaming only available in select countries/regions with PlayStation Plus Premium. For details see here.

  • All I want is for yall to overhaul the main trophy interface on PS5.

  • Alguma previsão de quando o VRR passará a funcionar na configuração de 1440p?

  • Y folder isn’t in home screen like ps4, pls make it in Home Screen

  • Great to see 1440p finally supported. Let’s get that Discord voice chat integration now. Really hope we see it in this August/September’s major firmware update.

  • Very excited about this update.

Biggest improvement for me is Gamelists (or folders). So happy you can add the same game to multiple lists. It sounds like a little thing but it makes a huge difference for me.

Without having tried it my two requests to improve it are

    1. Allow game Icons to be added to gamelists even if the game is not currently installed on the system (include the cloud download button over the artwork to show it is not currently installed.)

    2. Increase the number of lists you can make and the number of games you can add. Realistically 15 Lists and 100 games per list should work for a good amount of people but I know there are plenty of people who could spend hours making lists (myself included).

Again I am excited for this update and cant wait to see what the team adds from here

  • A lot of 1440P monitors are hdmi 2.0 but still support VRR. Would be nice if VRR was not limited to hdmi 2.1 monitors as well.

  • “VRR on PS5 supports 1080p and 4K video output but not 1440p.” is it also the case when down sampled from 4k ?

  • I looked at buying a ps5 recently but could not find a single compelling reason to buy that model over the ps4 so I got a PS4.
Since I have played gt7 on both consoles and it proved to me that I bought the right one. The game looks the same on both from across the room.
Maybe we’ll get a PS5 after the ps6 is released.

  • ICU Sony, Listening to the constructive feedback surely (atleast the Software/UI team). Were getting there, so much little things that make the overall experience better for a wider audience and trust me it goes a long way. simple as 1440p, I imagine widescreen support on the future consoles and higher FOV settings. blur the lines, add support for more VRR standards

  • I’m still wary of installing a beta update on a console, myself.

  • Still to this day I am not able to get a ps5. Bots should not be able to purchase all the ps5 consoles when released not allowing everyday people the ability to purchase one. This is sickening that they allow this.

  • If the game lists can’t be added to the Home Screen then they are kind of pointless. Don’t understand why devs make something so simple complicated and over engineered. I personally hate cluttered screens and thought the PS4 interface was simple and elegant and easily managed to MY PREFERENCE. As the gamer (and owner of the system) I should be able to organize the content I see the way I want to see. I hate the constant barrage of items on the Home Screen. If some people like great but it should be optional and is 100% why I kept my PS3/4/5 offline most of the time. Keep it simple. Add folders back to the home screen and allow the user to decide what content is present.

  • Quick resume needs to be added
And I get PlayStation stars but why haven’t you integrated Sony rewards and PS Direct into PlayStation store like Xbox has this should be implemented within a major update

  • 1440p big W guys

  • custom wallpapers please thanks

  • Don’t care about 1440p, i just want the 3d audio support for hometheater systems.

  • Are they finally gonna fix the “Remote Play Connected” message thats stuck to your screen when using remote play? I’ve been waiting ages now for them to fix it, and have reported it aswell. But with no luck on either side.

  • That’s cool, I know a lot of people have been asking for 1440p since before the PS5 came out, just like they were asking for VRR for years. But now there’s still no 1440p VRR. The long wait to properly support a small bunch of resolutions and all the relevant HDMI 2.1 features continues. Pretty embarrassing.

By far the most important system software feature I’m waiting for us the ability to disable those horrible game cards. Knowing how far I am through the current quest is a spoiler! I have to avert my eyes every time I want to put the console in rest mode.

  • Love to see that the ball has been dropped on any proper 3D audio profile support for actual receivers… over a year after 3D audio was said to “replace” Dolby Atmos and/or DTS/TrueHD formats. Thanks guys….

  • Very happy to finally see 1440p, and supersampling included too!
Would be nice if the collections can be added to the home screen, like folders on PS4…

  • Thank you!! ps: Please don’t remove folders with PS6.

  • Let us play our entire digital playstation library on ps5 and ps4 and a new handheld

  • That’s good sony knows it’s hard to get most 4k TV and Gaming Monitors.

  • Custom friends folders is a must for me.
..and an option to view in list mode is too.
This icons only thing is utterly abysmal.
    Also..I’m tired of space limitations.
M.2 drives are too expensive, and my 1tb one is already full.
..and honestly, I’m not interested in transferring games back and forth between the PS5 internal and an external hdd every time I want to play something.
I’ll gladly take the performance drop just to play directly from the external hard disk.

It would also be nice to have an option to turn off HDR on the PS5 home screen, HDR should only be enabled when a game or app supports it. Having HDR enabled on the PS5 home screen makes browsing media, like screenshots and trailers, look bad while browsing the games PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus game catalog.

  • This is very good to hear but hopefully in the near future we can also get the social feed and themes back which would be awesome.

  • Patch notes for PS5 games like PS4 has for PS4 games.

  • Still hoping to see Discord Integra pop up here eventually. Glad these changes are here nonetheless

  • And…Discord?

  • Some nice features, but I take it as I don’t see it anywhere in the notes, we still can’t play with others who don’t have the beta??

It’s my number one complaint, I love being on these betas, but I’m always put off by this one problem.

My scenario is this, I have a friend on ps4, that I play with daily, in some coop games.

And take this beta, would love to try it, however I won’t , purely because I wouldn’t be able to play with my friend.
    Btw, I’m ps5, there ps4.

So like I say I’m guessing it applies this time as well ??

  • It’s a very sad day for the PlayStation Blog commenting community – now they won’t be able to whine about 1440 support on each and every blog post!

  • 1. What my PS5 says about my Epson projector: ****
“The connected HDMI device doesn’t support 1440p output”

    2. What my PC does with my Epson projector: ****
“Source: HDMI1 Resolution: 2560 x 1440 Scan Mode: Progressive Refresh Rate: 60.00 Hz”

    Good job, Sony 🤦‍♂️

Can we expect a fix to this?

  • LEFT__4__DEAD__2

I cant wait to see what I can do with 1440p, arigatou gozaimasu! 🥰

  • When are we going to have Friends activities back??

  • Finally 1440p

  • When you make a jump for joy because you think they added folders, but then notice it’s only within the Game Library…. :'(

  • I reregistered for the beta program yesterday when I heard 1440p was included in the new firmware update and I was accepted today! Downloaded the new update and I was in 1440p heaven. Games look awesome on my Odyssey G7. Thanks again!

    • Hey. I own the same monitor. Is it better than the upscaled 4K? And does it have 120hz support at 1440p as the monitor only has hdmi 2.0.

  • INDIVIDUAL LANGUAGE SETUP PER ACCOUNT, please!!

I’m not a native english speaker but i do enjoy my games in english (text and speech) nonetheless, yet both my kids prefer to play in their native language (french, for instance).

When will get the option to set up one language per account, and have the console automatically switch to the correct language when launching the desired profile?

  • Any news on Tempest support for surround sound systems or even better, Dolby Atmos support for ps5 games?

  • Could you please enable selection of mic input and party audio output separately from each other? Specifically, I miss being able to hear party audio from my TV (as I used to do on my PS4) rather than being forced to hear it from the controller speaker, just because I am using the controller’s mic. The UI on PS5 feels like a step backwards from my PS4 in some places, and this is probably my biggest pet peeve since buying my PS5.

  • For media, mp4 videos, movies that are on external hard drives, can we please get a better UI for the PS5? Can we get the same video controls similar to the PS3 or better yet a blu ray remote like the PS3 too? Video controls on the PS5 are limited to play,
pause, 10 sec rewind, & 10 sec fast forward! Please bring back the screen preview blocks when u fast forward or rewind so we are able to search & see the location in the movie where we want to go or left off! Also can we get a repeat button to repeat a
video & to repeat all videos in the folder! Basically the same video controls that the PS3 has would be perfect! Please deliver these setting, it would be appreciated!

  • Ok I love the ps5 , I love the games but there are a couple of gripes I have with the ps5 and I hope this is seen by sony , I love how you guys brought vrr , and now is bringing 1440p support , please I beg you sony to unlock the bandwidth for the ps5 why is it capped at 32gbs bandwidth through hdmi 2.1 when hdmi 2.1 is supposed to be the next standard, the Xbox series x has 40gbs of bandwidth and I know the ps5 has the hardware to do 40gbs bandwidth hdmi 2.1 I really hope you guys will unlock this in a future update also , another gripe I have is why is there no support for dolby vision gaming at all when the Xbox supports dolby vision gaming, Sony please bring a update for dooby vision as many ps5 users do own either a Sony Bravia oled tv or a lg oled tv which supports dolby vision iq I would love to play my games in dolby vision and watch content in dolby vision these are the 2 things I hope to see in future updates for the ps5 40gbs bandwidth hdmi 2.1 and dolby vision update please make it happen

  • Good features added but with some caveats.

AMD Freesync should be enabled to allow VRR and 1440p
Gamelists/Folders require many steps to reach them. Users should be able to pin them in the dashboard

  • Is 120hz available with 1440p?

  • Great features coming and I’m sure there’s more coming in the future.

Does anyone know how to sign in for beta testers ?

I did sign for the previous one , but I can’t find a link for this one.

  • Bring back themes where are they ??? It’s like every ps4 feature we had isn’t on ps5 when it should of been from the beginning like folders and themes also could you allow PS5 save files to be copied to a USB? PS4 had it and PS5 should too in my opinion but most definitely bring back themes

  • Still no option to back-up my PS5 game saves to USB stick? :( I just don’t understand why I can’t do that this Gen for??? If my PS5 dies then I will lose all my PS5 game saves? And I don’t always want PS PLUS to save them to the cloud but I feel like SONY is forcing me to get PS PLUS every year now so I can just back-up my PS5 game saves.
Very disappointed in this I really am :(

    • Even with plus I can’t backup saves because of a stupid limit to the number of files and not the amount of space left.

  • Everything is running smoothly the only features missing is VRR with G-Sync/FreeSync support.

  • Please unlock full hdmi 2.1 support so 4k and 120fps is not limited to yuv422. It always makes the image look washed out.
