Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5 is rolling out this week

VRR support is coming to Call of Duty: Vanguard, Destiny 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village, and more.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support will start rolling out globally to PS5 players this week. On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.* Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

In the coming weeks, the PS5 versions of these titles will receive game patches enabling VRR support:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

These are just a few of the PS5 titles receiving VRR support and we’d like to thank their talented development teams. Please stay tuned to their channels for updates as you’ll have the best experience with VRR once their game patches are live.

Getting Started

VRR will arrive globally through a PS5 console update over the next few days (make sure you are connected to the internet to receive the update). Once you’ve received the update, VRR will automatically be enabled for supported games if your PS5 console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or PC monitor. You can also turn it off under “Screen and Video” in system settings.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using, the game you’re playing, and the visual mode you’ve selected for a particular game (if it supports multiple modes). For more details on VRR settings, check out this page: https://www.playstation.com/support/hardware/ps5-4k-resolution-guide.

We’re always listening to your feedback and excited to bring you new fan-requested features. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Update: Arkane Studios has also announced that VRR support for Deathloop will roll out this week. It has been added to the list above.

*Results may vary by game, the TV you’re using, and the visual mode you’ve selected for a specific game.

  • It’s not working for all TV’s with HDMI and vrr freesync. I have a neo QLED 85a connecting the ps5 in the 2.1 gaming HDMI but it’s not activating de vrr. When I go to the ps5 options it is showing vrr automatic, however at the moment to open a game with vrr support like RE village my game bar menu on the tv keeps showing vrr off. I can play rachet and clank with fps boost up to 120 but it’s showing vrr off as well. I can play devil my cry 5 with 120 fps boost but also vrr shows off. Idk if only works with some tvs but it really sucks. This tv has vrr working in pc and Xbox but no ps5. Resident evil is showing 60 fps only and always vrr shows off.

  • Where’s 1440p support? If games are rendered close to that and upscale why not just have the option. I know the majority use tvs of 1080p and 4k 60hz but is it that difficult to add it?

  • Where is the FreeSync support for the millions of people with FreeSync displays???? Am i living in a dream?

  • 1440p please SONY!!!!!

  • Please, enable freesync support!!!

    • Seconded. So many monitors are left out that could expand the pool of users of VRR. A great feature like this should be more accessible.

  • Hello PlayStation I have the new Sony sound bar HTA-7000 and I needed to unplug it from the sound bar to the tv to enable vrr. Does the new Sony soundbar not support vrr? Or am I doing it all wrong. Help I would love to have vrr support and My amazing sound.

  • Why doesn’t this work with backwards compatible PS4 games?

  • Step in the right direction but so many monitors have been left out that support VRR on PC and other consoles that will remain unnamed. It is such a useful feature and I would hate to see it locked only to such an exclusive group of mostly TV users. I hope VRR support gets expanded to more screens that support it with HDMI 2.0. I obviously am not aware of the hurdles but I am sure it would be welcomed and appreciated by people currently unable to access this feature.

  • FreeSync support please. 🙏

  • How about 8K support? Still waiting.

  • DV

  • Any chance you’re working on adding VRR support for older versions of HDMI? Currently have a 1080p 120Hz monitor with I believe HDMI 1.4 and says VRR unsupported. Appreciate the effort just wish I could take advantage without purchasing more new hardware

  • Cool

  • 48Hz bottom is simply not good enough and makes no sense why it’s not at least 40. For games like Elden Ring, the framerate goes below 48fps in both modes and would require a patch to work properly. With a 40Hz floor it wouldnt. There exists displays outside of your own departments.

  • Too bad it’s not FreeSync so that more people (including myself) could actually take advantage of this great technology. Why is it not FreeSync? Who knows. I guess PS5 is too good for it.

  • Thank you for this highly requested update! VRR update for Horizon Forbidden West, and GT7 coming soon?

  • Fix this VRR, because there are at least 120 monitors “VRR compatible”, but not supported by PS5. And hdmi 2.1 is no excuse, because many tvs are hdmi 2.0, and they are functional.
    It is shameful.

  • You guys made me to buy a pc monitor hdmi 2.1 with vrr…

  • Still waiting on a fully customisable Home Screen, Facebook integration and the option to delete trophies. The last one isn’t a big ask! I don’t want to hide them I want to delete them please :)

  • Love that VRR is coming it would also be nice if you made it so you can choose the colour of leds on the console when it starts up and the controller instead of having to get them silly stickers

  • now we need 1440p support pleas, i am still playing in 1080p on my 1440p monitor.

  • Please for the love of God 1440p

  • I really wish you would add freesync as well because it works on more devices, or at the very least allow VRR to work from a lower hz instead of only 48 to 120 hz.

  • When do we get Dolby Vision??

  • That’s cool. Can you guys release a back button mod for the dualsense though? I’m playing so much these days, it would help.

  • Amazing services great work

  • PS5 the supposed next-gen system that is nothing but pathetic performance with weak a** games (tech wise),worst PS in history.

Nevermind that though, hey Sony how about fixing your crap since you got time for such gimmicks?…how about fixing the issue of the PS4 Store removing the things from your cart?…the Store refreshing itself when you’re halfway the list of games on sale bringing you all the way back to the top?…this crap has been happening for years.Unbelievable guess you guys don’t try out your own Store, who am I kidding?…of course y’all dont.

  • when can we expect actual freesync support over hdmi 2.0? Would be nice if the 99% of us who don’t have $2000+ Tvs, but do have freesync compatible monitors could enjoy VRR as well.

  • Please Sony give us 1440p support! Haven’t got 2k to spend on a tv.

  • Please add support for Freesync

  • So when is Sony gonna fix this controller update problem?? Both my controllers haven’t been connecting in months!

  • Why oh why aren’t Sony utilising Freesync for VRR? The version you are using Sony, which is based on the HDMI 2.1 spec, is not working on Panasonic TVs. VRR via Panasonics are maxed out at 60Hz when VRR is enabled on the PS5.

Please look into and fix ASAP.

  • Still waiting for 1440p support, Please add it.

  • Please add 1440p support.

  • Unfortunate that vrr is only supported on hdmi 2.1 displays. I have an LG Gsync monitor and vrr is supported on my pc and Xbox but then when I go to turn it in on on my Ps5, nope! Gsync is meant to be a form a vrr!

  • Please add FREESYNC support as well. It would help out 80% of the gaming monitor community that plays on PS5. I have a VRR capable monitor and my PS5 swears up and down that my monitor isn’t supported. I want the features that I paid all my hard earned money on. It’s really the right thing to do Sony, it will help a lot of people out. Please hear us on this and don’t ignore us please.

Sounds nice, but I think it would be more important for Sony to solve the storage problem. It is around $900 to buy an internal 4gb ssd that will work in ps5. That is too much money just for storage. Only giving us a small amount of internal storage is unacceptable. Sony’s answer is store your ps5 games on the external and then when you want to play transfer it over because they say it is faster than re-downloading it. I find sometimes it is faster to re-download it than transfer it.. Copying ps5 games back and forth to an external is just too much of a pain in the rear that I don’t want to buy any more ps5 games. I would need a transfer to happen in 2 minutes or less for me to be happy with it. I think Sony should have given us more internal storage and they should have told everyone you can only play ps5 games on a small amount of internal storage (after the software, that amount isn’t much bigger than 1/2tb) before people bought the console. Had I known this I probably would not have bought it until they figured out a better solution. I was looking forward to the new VR that will come out and that is why I bought the ps5. But if we have to keep transferring software, I might as well buy an Index and stay with PCVR. Was really sad once I knew this.

  • Please add 1440p. Don’t ignore so big part of customers

  • Insomniacs implementation of VRR on R&C and Spiderman is excellent! Can Sony please make their performance options a PlayStation 1st party standard and patch already released games to take advantage of VRR 🙏

  • If there’s no hardware limitation, 1440p with G-Sync support using HDMI 2.0 would make my Acer Predator’s day. Also, why put more stress on the PS5 and force it to supersample when the native rendering resolution is acceptable for a lot of people? Having 1080p, 1440p and 2160p as choices wouldn’t hurt.

With the arrival of the PS5, I can finally enjoy “enhanced” old gen games like TLOU2 on my 1080p 60Hz Bravia. Solid framerate and mostly a walk in the park for my PS5, unlike my mighty PS4 pro and its jet engine.

  • I have a question. I have an samsung q800 8k TV. When I have the vrr on the black areas on my screen flicker a distorted color. Is there a patch for this? Dmc 5 and Rachet has done this.

  • They’ve been dragging their feet on 1440p support for 2 years. Disappointed.

  • It means nothing if we cannot buy it in Indonesia. Resellers give a wayyy higher price.
    ****

  • It’s halfway the week after, and I still don’t have the update :(

  • Where is 1440p support? It‘s so annoying having to ask for a basic feature….

  • Lol and where is LFC? 😂
    If fps drops bellow 48fps

Jesus christ Sony…. This is Unbelievable

  • Great feature finally reach PS5! Thanks for the update guys!
A remark following test on elden ring: please consider decreasing low framerate limit currently set as 48 fps, below this value VRR is not active and judder is back..
Keep up the good work 😉
