Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5 is rolling out this week

VRR support is coming to Call of Duty: Vanguard, Destiny 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Resident Evil Village, and more.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support will start rolling out globally to PS5 players this week. On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.* Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

In the coming weeks, the PS5 versions of these titles will receive game patches enabling VRR support:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

These are just a few of the PS5 titles receiving VRR support and we’d like to thank their talented development teams. Please stay tuned to their channels for updates as you’ll have the best experience with VRR once their game patches are live.

Getting Started

VRR will arrive globally through a PS5 console update over the next few days (make sure you are connected to the internet to receive the update). Once you’ve received the update, VRR will automatically be enabled for supported games if your PS5 console is connected to an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or PC monitor. You can also turn it off under “Screen and Video” in system settings.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using, the game you’re playing, and the visual mode you’ve selected for a particular game (if it supports multiple modes). For more details on VRR settings, check out this page: https://www.playstation.com/support/hardware/ps5-4k-resolution-guide.

We’re always listening to your feedback and excited to bring you new fan-requested features. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Update: Arkane Studios has also announced that VRR support for Deathloop will roll out this week. It has been added to the list above.

*Results may vary by game, the TV you’re using, and the visual mode you’ve selected for a specific game.

Please lower the refresh rate floor and support LFC. A number of games drop below 48 fps, which renders PS5’s VRR support meaningless in these instances. Clearly Insomniac has done a great job by implementing is within their game, but without system level LFC support I fear this will continue to be a problem.

  • Loving VRR on PS5. Will we be getting LFC as well in the future?

  • When is there going to be an announcement for additional PS 5 consoles this year 2022. Date of comment 4/05/22

  • It’s been a long time now, where is the 1440p native support? come on, do it already, it is a basic feature.

  • Why is the VRR floor so high (48Hz)? That “other console” will enable VRR down to 40Hz, I’d like the same on my ps5

IT’S SIMPLE. WHEN WE SPEND TIME AND MONEY 💲💰 INTO SOMETHING THAT MEANS ALLOT TO OUR KIDS AND OUR FAMILY IN GENERAL. SUPPORT IS KEY 🗝️🔐 SPECIFICALLY TO SONY A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY IN THE GAME IN SECTOR SO SUPPORT SHOULD BE YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY AND ACCESSIBILITY WITHOUT THAT THERE IS NO TRANSPARENCY AND IT SEEMS ONE-SIDED TO BENEFIT THE CORPORATION NOT THE CUSTOMER JUST SAYING SOMEONE AT SONY SHOULD BE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS. RESPECTFULLY F.V…

  • It’s honestly insane that you would do this update and exclude HDMI 2.0 monitors with freesync and that you still don’t support 1440p. Like I haven’t used my ps5 in so long because it’s just not being supported for the whole community. My PC and my Xbox receive way more play time than my ps5 and that’s a lot coming from someone that almost exclusively played their PS4 and PS4 pro all last gen. Y’all are just losing more and more loyal customers.

  • Please support VRR on HDMI 2.0

Also 1440p and a media player with DLNA support

  • Thanks for finally adding VRR. It’s a good start. Please let us know when it will support:

    Sub 48hz range
    Freesync VRR
    1440p resolution

If those things are tricky to do, let us know why. Thanks.

    • Please Sony that’s all we ask. Communication. If something is impossible to be done please just let us know that, please stop leaving us in the dust with information. A lot of people bought hdmi 2.0 and 1.4 Freesync monitors just for VRR and then y’all restrict us. We just need to know the real Sony this isn’t cool or right. THIS IS WRONG.

  • I would love to use this feature! Especially since I purchased a TV capable of 4k 120 hz, and vrr. I was so excited to apply this feature to games that have unlocked their framerates and shown a stutter free gameplay I haven’t ever seen since I don’t game on a pc. So I have a vizio h1 oled. I’ve seen people post gameplay of the series x using the same TV and it applying vrr in 120hz mode. The ps5 on the other hand can NOT use vrr at 120hz. Plus it’s not applied to framerates lower than 48hz. So presently I can only benefit from this feature if I’m gaming at 48-60hz. I hope someone at sony is see these issues and is trying to find a solution. I’ve been a loyal ps fan the past 15 years. Please sony, fix this issue.

  • Please sony give us 1440p support so many gamers need this option for monitors.

  • You now need to add an ALLM toggle please. You are locking out gaming features on my T.V. that I used to use but now can’t.

  • 1440p support please.

  • Please let me turn off Allm….. it is horrible without my tv Settings (LG C1)
Ps5 is actually useless for the most Games, for me

  • Please add 1440p support. A lot of PlayStation fans want and need it.

  • spectacularnova

Please kindly add 1440P (2k) support for PS5 as most gamers out there, including me, own a 2K Monitor (Asus VG27AQL1A for me). VRR on it would be awesome just like how it works on the xbox. We do not want to buy another 4k Monitor or TV with HDMI 2.1 which is insanely expensive, not to mention that right now most of us are already paying the scalpers for PS5. We are not rich peasants.

Please don’t take too long time for consideration, just make it happen as soon as possible.

  • When can we expect 1440p ?!??
