PS5 and PS4 System Software Updates release globally today

Variable Refresh Rate support is coming to PS5 in the months ahead.

Our next PS5 and PS4 system software updates are rolling out globally today, so we wanted to provide a quick look at some of the new features. We’re also glad to share new details on Variable Refresh Rate for PS5 on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, which is planned to release in the months ahead.

New features for PS5 and PS4

Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones.

You can read more about these system update features here.

For a refresher on PS5 features like how to apply game presets on your console, pin videos and apps to your screen while you play, or share your screen with friends, check out the new “Pro Tips” cards in the Control Center.

PS App and PS Remote Play enhancements

Starting later today, we’re gradually rolling out the ability for PS App users to create or join Open and Closed Parties through the app as well. We’ve also updated the PS App Game Base UI to make it easier to access the Friends, Parties and messaging features, delivering a consistent player experience with PS5.

PS Remote Play mobile app users can enjoy a new “dark mode” based on their phone setting and choose from new Screen Reader languages for both iOS and Android, including Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek, Thai and Chinese (traditional and simplified).

On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5

We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off.

Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing. As we get closer to the feature’s release, we’ll share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch.

Our teams will continue to work hard on ways to enhance your gaming and social experiences on PlayStation, so stay tuned for more updates!

  • Do I need a new TV for my PS5? I have a hisense roku – probably

  • Any news on when the glitch due to the system update be fixed?

  • Another useless update, that isn’t going to make any difference.

  • Who ever came up with the new useless update needs a few kicks to the head.

    • More like fired. I think Sony is just getting Lazy and cheap. There is so much potential for the past and pat and they come up with this. Pathetic.

  • Well this update sucked for the PS4. I couldn’t watch any films on Netflix, Disney plus, Plex…etc for half hour for all for this rubbish. 😡

  • Please add a small demo or an option in the Video settings menu to test a 4K resolution @ 120hz. A lot of HDMI 2.1 cables are fake and do NOT really support 4K @ 120hz or 8K resolutions – but it’s nearly impossible to find out wether the cable is the problem or something else (you might use those cables for a PC as well). But if there is a TV with a real HDMI 2.1 input and a PS5 you could easily test each cable with such an option in the settings (or a small demo, as I mentioned) …

That woud be great and should be easy to implement. Thanx in advance !!!

  • What time today does the Ps app get updated?

  • Hdmi 2.0 supports VRR and Freesync. Why is Sony making us go to xbox to game with VRR and VRR our tvs and monitors. Sony is not supporting AA majority of its stakeholders. My 18 month tv and one year old monitor are neglected. Booooo!!

  • Cool update i’m not dissapointed

  • Honestly it’s been a year and the UI of the PS5 is so absolutely terrible it’s insane.
The fact that we still dont have more sorting options (like local multiplayer) in the library, folders, VRR, Atmos, a web browser, PS3 back compat, bluetooth headset support, usb save files, an easier way to see trophies – and biggest of all – the ability to output at bloody 1440p…

It makes this console a chore to use. It needs a full redesign honestly but at the speed y’all work at that’ll be a good decade from now.

    Really thinking of selling it

  • Too bad the TV advertised to be “Ps5 ready” and poster boy for PS5 is still hot mess with false advertising, and likely will never be fixed. The x900h.

120hz mode not true 4k,half vertical resolution.

Vrr mode a mess, barely works right and disables color features, which makes the image quality terrible and mode pointless.

Dolby vision has no game mode, terrible input lag.

To make matters worse, each feature is an entirely seperate hdmi mode and cannot work together.

I hope this update has better quality control.

  • “pin videos and apps to your screen while you play.” Is under the multitasking pro tip. When will we be able to pin apps?

  • Now we need access to our PS3/PSV/PSP/PS2/PS1 digital libraries as it is time to not only put your PS fanbase first again, but have the opportunity to relist all those unbelievable numbers of games back on the store [uploaded on the new storefront and licencing relinked to accounts]. Then you should look into 1) ensuring that previously purchased versions are accessible and playable [you have the knowledge to emulate these now, even if PS3 would require a bit of effort], 2) considering a “PlayStation Legacy” service attached to PS+ [imagine your choice of a select number of titles per month across the platforms], and 3) universally pricing them for those that want to buy them [i.e. nowhere near full price; not even close; like seriously, nowhere near].

  • hey yo!

  • 更新完后 港服不能联网游戏

  • Noice update i like and I’m hyper fot tha update 10.00

    • Well, this entire thread was a bunch of people whining they didn’t get their desired features, so I’ll whine about my desired features as well.

1- choose audio output from sound card so you can toggle all audio /chat audio from there.
2- folders. Don’t have to be on the homepage, could be at the top of the library.
3- just announce there won’t be 1440p support so these people can shut up about it. We all know it’s not coming.
4- themes. Since you’re not giving them 1440p, at least give them themes to appease them.
5- we need switcher to work as intended which basically means to emulate ‘quick resume’ on Xbox. This is a must.
6- you do need to let people back up saves via usb. It’s not right you took that away.
7- unlock customisation. I know you want certain tabs always visible, but someone who never uses the store shouldn’t be forced to see it.
8- allow non primary console to upload /download save files. There’s a game save stuck on my girlfriend’s ps4 because I forgot to manually upload it to the cloud before leaving, even though I have ps+, own the game, and was playing on my own account. It also makes it inefficient to own multiple console in one house because you can’t just seamlessly pick up and play where you left off. That’s bad.
9- you really need to have some sort of smart delivery. When you insert a ps4 disc in ps5, and there’s a ps5 version available, it should query the user if they’d like to install that version instead. Also, inserting a ps5 disc in ps4 should act as a key to unlock that version of the game.
10- don’t listen to the haters, you’re doing good for the most part.

      Adieu.

  • This is great! Would also really like to see 1440p support added! Please look into it :)

  • I am glad that VRR support is coming, but it really do need more support to older version of HDMI 2.0 because I have Samsung Odyssey G7 Monitor that is 1440p 144hz with nVIDIA G-Sync/FreeSync in it. I would love to use my monitor to its full use of it with my PS5.

  • I would love to see a Party Chat option that was Open, but just for Friends, not Friends of Friends. Any possibility of this happening?

  • I downloaded the software update today I got an error message and now my system won’t respond and stays on the error message

  • Please, please, please add 3D bluray support, so once again we can enjoy the wonders of 3D movies on PSVR 🙂

  • Still waiting for themes to be added home screen looks boring and plain without themes and background music.

  • All I really want to know is WHEN WILL MY PS5 GET A TRUE “QUICK RESUME” feature so I can pause multiple games at ANY point as I do on my Xbox Series-X?!!!

    Please advise.

    Thank you

  • Cool, still waiting for 1440p support though.

  • This update destroyed my system….I can’t use anything because the stupid update won’t even work…and it’s forcing you to be psn which I now cannot use. I’m all digital
    …thanks Sony

  • So many xboxers pretending to be PS fans here it’s sad .
Thanks for the updates from us PS fans who own 4k HDMi 2.1 TVs , we appreciate it . I literally bought my TV before PS5 came out and knew exactly what to get because they clearly stated they weren’t supporting 1440p and did say they were supporting HDMI 2.1 so why did you expect otherwise ? You can get a nice LG OLED for a good price these days check it out the picture quality is awesome .

  • Is anyone else having issues with the PS5 Dualsense since this update? My controller will connect for about 5 seconds when the PS5 is turned on but then will turn off and not reconnect. I’ve tried factory resetting and using different controllers but it’s the same result. It was fine before the update. Just wondering if this is a widespread thing.

    • Did you update them with a wire plugged in the system?

    • Same issue, bump

    • Same… with USB it disconnects after 1-2 sec, with BT it lasts for maybe 20 sec?

    • Yeah I did everything right. Plugged the controller to update it and all. I hope they fix this ASAP. I hope it’s an auto update. I can’t update it if I can’t use my controller.

    • Right after updating it should ask you to update controller with a USB cable. So kind of strange it didn’t ask for that to be done. It asked me for all 15 controllers I have to be updated every time I turn one on in the last few days.

    • any fixes? still have the same issue, tried everything same as you!

    • same problem. try everything and 2 times factory reset. nothing helps. I can use ps5 after frist time reset but next day same issue. controller not working or is it PS5? any help? thx

    • Yes same has happened to mine. Have you got yours sorted yet?

    • Nothing yet. I called PS support on Friday, explained the situation and that I wasn’t the only one with this problem. The guy didn’t seem to be aware this was happening to people. He just took my email and told me someone would be in contact with me. It’s funny because there’s loads of articles about it being an issue but Sony haven’t said anything.

    • Right so I’ve made a discovery. Everything works if you turn your Internet off or use a LAN cable from your modem to the playstation. So the issue must be the wireless connection between the internet and the console itself. The update could have messed up the wireless on the console. Hope this helps.

    • So Sony emailed me back about the issue. They basically said that my controller is broken and that I need to replace it. My controller clearly isn’t broken and I’ve already said it multiple times. It’s the software update that broke the connection between the controller and the playstation. And the email was in German even though mine was in english. Seems like they’re very out of touch with this issue.

  • It broke my entire ps4 lmfao

  • Guys, if you want 1440p look into the mClassic. It upscales to 1440p.

  • Thank you for all you do for our consoles Sony. I was also wondering if there are any improvements for the PS5’s USB Music Player incoming? It certainly could use a few significant improvements that would at least result in it being as efficient as it’s PS4 counterpart, such as when backing up one folder it won’t take you to the root USB menu, maybe faster scrolling, etc? Please and thanks!

  • Why is the Voice Command preview only available to U.S. and U.K. accounts? Is the Canadian accent so much different than the American accent? Or is it that we spell “colour” with a “U”… but can’t be, as the British spell it the same way. Is this also why I can no longer get beta build invites? Got an invite only once during the M.2 beta. What is the reason Sony!!???!!

  • Luckily I just got a PS5 for the single player exclusives.

Tried hooking up my gaming monitor to try out WZ now that I can turn crossplay off. Discovered it ran like. No VRR or 1440 support is crazy. If I didn’t have a Series X and this was my main console I would be loosing my. Sony has dropped the ball for you PS guys this is. To read VRR is only coming to 2.1 is ridiculous, it’s been available since launch for HDMI 2.0 spec on the SX.

Well I guess I’ll be sticking to Spiderman and God of War for now.

  • This update as soon as it finished has stopped any controllers being able to pair and stay connected with the console. I have tried resetting the console and controllers and using different cords etc. If i turn it off manually then turn it back on with the controller, it stays connected for a second then disconnects. The console has essentially bricked itself! I have been trying for hours and am currently in isolation so this has frustrated me to no end. Please issue a fix or if anyone knows a way around it please help me as I am currently losing my damn mind here!!

  • When to solve the green screen crashed problems? It can’t be your hardware problems, right?

  • So this update just bricked the controllers/inputs?
TL:DR: after update the controller disconnects in seconds, regardless of connection method (USB or BT). After disconnect cannot connect again.

Just updated the system, then after reboot I was informed about an update for the controller. Was asked to connect it using USB, which I did, then selected “Update” and left the system to do its thing. Left then came back, and the system was off. After turning it back on I was told power saver kicked in because the unit was idling.
That is when I realized after the update the controller DISCONNECTS IN A FEW SECONDS, and It won’t connect back anymore.
Should I use USB, it disconnects almost instantly, after 1-2 sec, if I connect wireless, it works for maybe ~20 sec?

The system itself does not freeze, as I can see menu animations, and I can suspend it or turn it off via the power button on front.
It even recognizes my controllers (I have two and a media remote) either by USB or BT, but those only last connected for a few seconds, then once its gone won’t connect back.

Tried clearing software cache and rebuilding database (multiple times) using safe boot, but nothing changed.

I’m fairly certain the controller update didn’t brick my controller, because
    1. I have a 2nd one acting the same
    2. Same story with media remote
    3. Same controller works as intended in safe boot menu

  • So does the future also hold a media player with DLNA support? I know that took a long time for the PS4 too, but as it stands I still use the PS4 more than the PS5.

  • When will we get 2k at 120fps. The Xbox has it, why doesn’t the PS5 have it! So frustrating.

  • How can I turn off the gaming mode feature? Why is this not optional? My tv already has no input lag and looks better without gaming mode. Please allow us to make this feature optional!

    • I’m going to keep commenting about this too. I didn’t pay over 700 for a tv to be forced to use game mode which looks absolutely horrible and imo makes my tv unusable. If they are going to give us features at least give the option to turn them off because right now I don’t even want to use my ps5 because of this so I essentially have two large tech ornaments that don’t fit the purpose they were made for

    • I found others with the same problem about the TV getting stuck in game mode due to a forced ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) done by the PS5!

Please people, we need to keep pushing this to Playstation, you guys might have not seen it yet but your TV’s lost quality with this mess, I lost the motionflow from my Sony TV and you just can’t mess with your settings, and if you change them it will turn to worse!

  • Can you makt the next update or 2 to add to where I can send my friends screen recordings to the ps4 please but all and all I enjoy this ne update

  • 1440p??? For when Sony?

  • I wish they would work on the on screen controls on phones and tablets in the Remote Play app. Tried it out and it is horrendous to the point of being basically unplayable in its current state. The main issue being that the controls drift. When you turn the screen just keeps turning even when you remove your hands or go back to straight. You end up having to fast tap the thumb stick to incrementally move in the direction you wany to go. This was repeatable on every device I tried. After a few minutes I just gave up. It’s also very lame that Sony doesn’t have a Linux client for their remote play (in 2022!). It’s time to help your customers break free of Microsoft, my dudes. Linux is a wonderful OS for gaming these days, and it would be amazing to be able to remote play my PS games on my Linux machine!!

  • We need a feature where party owners can mute someone for everyone, or have them not be able to hear us. Like discord. Maybe a thing where other people in parties can remove people? Like a second owner basically.

  • I have downloaded the latest system software update for one of my PlayStation 5’s and the current controllers I use for this console has just stopped working. I reset the controller it worked for only 20 seconds after logging to my profile and then just stops.

  • My controller isn’t turning on anymore

  • Hi it seems like after the update i can’t play online games i can do everything except playing online games will there be a fix for this

  • BIG PROBLEM!

I OWN A SONY TV XH90 WITH MOTIONFLOW WHICH I LOVE TO USE IN GAMES, WITH WHIS NEW UPDATE THE TV LOCKS THE PICTURE IN GAME MODE AND TOOK AWAY MY CONTROL OVER MONTIONFLOW, THE TV INFORMS THAT THE OPTION IS UNAVAILABLE WHEN ALLM IS ON, THERE IS NOW WAY TO TURN OFF!

DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS RIGHT NOW!

PS5 HAVE TO PUT AN OPTION TO TURN THE ALLM OFF, I BUY SONY TV’S SO I CAN USE MOTIONFLOW DURING GAMING, THIS IS VERY BAD FOR ME! MAKE AN OPTION TO TURN GAME MODE OFF.

PEOPLE CAN SAY WHAT THEY WANT BUT NOTHING BEATS A GAME WITH MOTIONFLOW ON, NOTHING! TO ME TURNS A GAME WITH 30 FPS INTO A GAME WITH 60 FPS.

  • add 1440p !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So I tried to update and now it won’t turn on just leaves me with a black screen. Please help!

  • After this update I’m having trouble with my controllers. They are (sometimes) working for 15-20 seconds and after that they just stop.

I’m in desperate need of help here!
(Hard reset doesn’t work and controller is fine.).
