PS5 September System Software Update launches globally tomorrow

Includes new UX features and customization options, 3D Audio for built-in TV speakers, and M.2 SSD storage expansion

Tomorrow, we’re pleased to launch our second major PS5 system software update to all PS5 owners globally. The update includes a variety of enhancements to the PS5 console experience as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. It also features M.2 SSD storage expansion, which enables PS5 players to store and play PS5 games, PS4 games, and media apps directly from the expanded high-speed storage.

We’re also expanding mobile features with support for PS Remote Play over mobile networks starting tomorrow, and the ability to view Share Screen broadcasts on PS App beginning next Thursday, Sept. 23.

Thanks to everyone in the community who participated in our system update beta — your support and feedback was valuable. Here are some of the key new features coming to PS5, PS4 and our mobile apps:

PS5 September System Software Update Features

PS5 UX Enhancements

The PS5 September Update features new UX enhancements that make it easier than ever for players to view, personalize and manage their game content and console experience:

  • Control Center customization. Players can now customize their Control Center more freely by rearranging or choosing which controls to hide or unhide at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enhanced Game Base. Players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center.

While viewing Game Base in full screen, players can also see how many of their friends are online, busy, or offline, as well as accept, decline or cancel multiple friend requests at once.

  • Game Library and Home Screen updates. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they’ll now appear separately in the “Installed” tab of the Game Library and on the Home screen. Each game’s tile now also clearly indicates its platform.
  • Screen Reader controls.  Players can now pause or resume Screen Reader (Press “PS + Triangle buttons”) and have it repeat anything it reads (Press “PS  + R1 buttons”).

New Gaming and Social Experience Customizations

  • PlayStation Now resolution selector and connection test tool. PlayStation Now subscribers can choose between 720p or 1080p (depending on individual game) to accommodate their preferred video resolution for game streaming. A streaming connection test also helps them identify and troubleshoot any problems with their connection.
  • New Accolade Type: “Leader.” Following an online match, players can award others with a fourth accolade type, “Leader,” which is visible on players’ profiles.

  • Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. When players compete in challenges for a better time or a higher score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge card in the Control Center, or from their Media Gallery. Players have direct control over this functionality via their Captures and Broadcast settings.

  • New Trophy tracker. We’ve added a new Trophy Tracker that lets players quickly access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.

3D Audio Support for Built-In TV Speakers

The PS5 September Update adds support for players to experience 3D audio through their built-in TV speakers. Once enabled in the Sound menu, this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.* Players can measure the acoustics of their room using the microphone on their DualSense wireless controller to apply the 3D audio setting that’s optimized for their room.**

3D audio via compatible headsets on PS5 has been a popular feature among fans and developers. We’re thrilled to bring this feature to life for players directly through their built-in TV speakers, in addition to the headset support that’s been available since launch.

In addition, players with a Pulse 3D Wireless Headset now have access to equalizer settings within Sound Controls, allowing them to customize the sound profile according to their preference.

M.2 SSD Storage Expansion

Starting tomorrow, PS5 players around the globe can expand their storage capacity with an M.2 SSD, a type of high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in the PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console.

Once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. You can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options.

Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the minimum performance and size requirements outlined on this page. Using an M.2 SSD also requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure (such as a heatsink) that meets the dimensional requirements. Please read the page linked above carefully before purchasing any M.2 SSD or cooling structure for use with PS5.

Here’s a look at how to install an M.2 SSD in your PS5 console:

PS Remote Play App and PS App Enhancements

  • PS Remote Play App over mobile networks
    • With the PS Remote Play app, players have enjoyed the ability to remotely stream and play PS4 and PS5 games, switch between games, and browse their console’s menus on any compatible device connected to their broadband network.*** Now, players using the mobile app for iOS and Android have the option of using a mobile data connection when WiFi is not available.
    • Broadband internet with at least 5Mbps is required for PS Remote Play. For the best experience, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbps.
    • To help manage the amount of data used through a mobile connection, players can select their preferred video quality for mobile data streaming.
    • Please note the quality and connectivity of your Remote Play experience may vary depending on your mobile carrier network and network environment.

  • View Share Screen broadcasts on PS App
    • Starting next Thursday, Sept. 23, a PS App update will begin rolling out globally and give users the ability to view their friends’ Share Screen broadcasts together.
    • To start, join a party voice chat from your mobile device with a friend who’s playing on a PS5 console. Then ask your friend on PS5 to start their Share Screen broadcast. Please note, only players on PS5 can broadcast via Share Screen.
    • The Android version of the update is a phased release and may take one week until the update is available on your mobile device.

PS4 Console Enhancements

We’re also introducing some new features for PS4, including the ability for players to view their PS5 trophies on their PS4 profile and Trophy list. Players can also view other players’ PS5 trophies on PS4. On both PS4 and PS5 consoles, Party owners now also have the ability to disband a Party without having to remove players individually.

Which feature are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments.

*3D audio for built-in TV speakers needs to be enabled manually through the Sound menu in the PS5 console’s system settings (it’s off by default).
**A DualSense wireless controller update releasing alongside the PS5 September update is required to activate this feature.

  • Icons that I want to add to the Control Center:
-Save Data Management. Just take me right to that setting screen.
-Trophies. Go straight to my trophies. If I can’t disable trophies completely, at least give me quicker access to them.
-Settings. Yes, I know that it is at the top, but if you keep calling it a Control Center, but don’t take me to settings that allow me to control things, you are just being mean.

I like to see updates based on direct customer feedback rather than updates based on things the algorithm tells you. I was most excited about the changes to the Control Center, but it still doesn’t allow full customization. You give us a set of icons we can have displayed, and still, there are some we can’t remove at all, probably because you think that, if we can’t hide it, we will use it.

I don’t use the Switcher. I will never use the Switcher. It isn’t something that is important for me.
I would love an option to disable trophy tracking, so I don’t get one or two trophies in a game only to realize I don’t like the game and it is forever stuck on my account. I know that Trophies are used for market research, so y’all won’t get rid of them entirely, but that won’t stop me from complaining about them.

    • Checking trophies is a pain. Either have to go the game page, go down, past the dots to the right, or check my latest one in notifications and go to the full list via there… I wish the respective trophy list just popped up by pressing the PS button instead of those useless activity cards.

And yeah, some way to disable trophy tracking, or better yet, the option to delete them. This really discourages me trying anything outside of my comfort zone.

  • Why Minecraft did not show up on My recently played activity (PS5)

  • Great update… 3d through the tv doesn’t work at this time because each game will need to release an update to make it actually work. Just bad… Also where the heck is the VRR support?

  • Still no themes nor folders of any kind. The party chat system is still a mess aswell, we shouldn’t have to be forced in a group chat to make a party!

  • I am actually excited about the fact that I can look at PS5 trophies on PS4. I felt a bit lonely when I know that I have a PS5 but my friends do not and can’t see what I’m playing and my achievements lol.

  • Also one more thing Sony give us the option to disable start up sound I sometimes forget that soundbar is connected and it’s incredibly loud that would be much appreciated thanks

  • Nice. Let us play our entire Playstation library on PS5

  • Can we discuss when more PS5s will be available, for everyone to buy?

  • I’m hoping Sony eventually decides to add an option to customize a controllers dead zone for the analog sticks because I’ve had trouble with that on a few games and I want them to make that a feature

  • when is the ssd available for purchase

  • F1 2021 runs at 1440P 120FPS on the Xbox. It’s been almost a year and there’s still no native support. This is just one of the travesties along with the bait and switch regarding PS5 exclusive games like God of War (now it’s cross-gen).

This is turning out to be the PS3 era all over again. Please Sony, improve before you lose all goodwill.

  • Was really hoping they would fix the issue with the controller volume in chat. It works perfectly in games but when in chat it’s impossible to make out what anyone says its so quiet.
Please fix this. The whole reason I sat outside of a gamestop in the cold during Thanksgiving for 65 hours was to get a ps5. I can’t wear a headset for medical reasons and I thought this would be perfect for chat. Let down

  • Alguien sabe que puede tener mala mi ps5, cuando abro un juego tira pantallazo verde y se apaga

  • The Backbone One does work. I use it for remote play all the time.

  • Im looking forward to VRR support. 3D audio sounds flat and like it’s under water, be it TV or headphones, I keep wondering when the “immersive” part is coming.

    • Exactly, it sounds flat and discordant (on my LG CX). You might be able to differentiate sounds better (like I could hear the random chatter of the orcs in Shadow of War better) but in general it sounds bad. Might get better but for now I’ll leave it off.

  • The trophy list is vertical again but I think I already got used to it being horizontal… This way you can see more simultaneously but I liked the bigger pictures on vertical and how each trophy felt like a ‘separate challenge’ instead of a daunting list :p Maybe give us the option to change it how we like? Like with the white or black trophy pop ups.

  • @clutch_sam007 you’re so butt hurt that you don’t have a tv or monitor that has vrr or freesync that you go on sites trolling about vrr. lol what a loser

  • Ps5 order

  • This is all great but, where is 1440p support?!?! That is what’s wanted the most!

  • Please add native 1440p and VRR

  • Still waiting for a 1440p support

  • Since the update, share screen or share play has hard crashed my friends ps5 three times while trying to watch me play No Mans Sky. He has had to restart and repair his system each crash.

Side note, it is also harder to get to the party screen now because of the update, to even start a share play.

  • I would really really really like to be able to schedule game updates. Not everyone has high speed internet and in our house if the internet is brutally slow it is typically the Playstation downloading an update on its own. This makes doing anything else on the network near impossible. Can we get the option to allow game update scheduling so the updates can happen overnight?

  • Whoever said not many people use 1440p Monitors is an absolute moron. Not sure why they havent added 1440p in 2021 when majority of gamers use 1440p monitors.

  • Where is 1440p120hz(HDMI 2.0 max) support??? Guys???

  • Sony, what are you doing about your buggy update? Not cool for you to sit silent on the issues.

  • Great! Now if only the PlayStation 5 would launch so I could actually get one.

  • hey guys. after i download new update on my ps5 and dualsense my right analog drift left any one else have same issue?

  • Whatever you guys changed in this new firmware has an extremely annoying “feature” of showing both the PS4 and PS5 version of games in the home screen game list. Previously, if I put a PS4 disc in that has a PS5 upgrade, it would default to the PS5 version, so I just had to select the icon and start playing. With the new firmware, though, it now shows icons for both the PS4 and PS5 versions. Not only is it ugly, but I have to be extra careful not to accidentally select the PS4 version when I want to play the PS5 version. Sure, you can delete the PS4 version, but it just shows right back up again each time you start up the system again. :( There should be an option to allow us to hide games from appearing on that screen, or an automatic “Hide PS4 version if PS5 version is installed” option or something to that effect.

  • Update 9.00 has left my PS4 unable to connect to PSN. The update itself won’t even install. I keep receiving an error message while trying to install I’ve also tried updating via USB with no luck. Is Sony working on this issue?

  • hi Sony, I tried updating my PS4 with 9.0, And error message i got was different then most. su-24118-6 was the code, which was very common with 8.5 update. I followed all your directions from site, still same error. I now have my disk of SFV stuck in console as well. I had all my games backed up on external hard drive. but everything went down hill after the update issue. the disk worked fine the night before. Please help

  • Bro when I saw new features for ps4 I thought It was community partys. I am disappointed😭

  • Please I need help my ps4 slim does not want to update in tried anyway use until safe mode and still does not leave me an error su-42118-6 please help me.

  • Does anyone know if you’ll be able to see and edit the M.2 SSD storage from the app once it updates. Like you can now with the console storage.

  • Now I get error code ce 108255-1 on all my games

  • Thank for the improvements but we need 1440p and VRR support asap pls!

  • Why won’t you just give us 1440p support Sony? I sold my series x for a playstation and it looks horrible in comparison to how xbox on my 1440p monitor. It’s not even a hard thing to implement!

  • Can we have an option to revert to the old game tile setting? It was never a big deal to begin with, and arguably now having 2 copies of the same game on the home dashboard, taking up 25% of available quick launch icons, when you have a ps4 disc for a ps5 game, is significantly worse than it used to be

  • I would like to get the System Update but the problem is getting the PS5 console. Can I be added into the waiting list?

  • Could you please add 1440p support and dynamic themes to PS5.

  • V good. But hut, when will we get themes back? :(

  • Wouldn’t it be good if you added basic features like game reviews and ratings? You know, what was already on the PS4 for years.

  • Please fix new update on PS4. I do not want my PlayStation to become a brick. I will be extremely upset. Would seem like you purposely did it so people can buy PS5. Please take a look…

  • Where is the 1440P resolution???
How long will we have to wait???
Nowadays there is a universe of monitors with 1440P native resolution that offer an excellent image upgrade and in relation to 4K and 120Hz (or more) TVs and at a reasonable cost.
In 120Hz TV’s, however, you have to sell the video game to buy the TV at the same cost. By the way, Sony doesn’t even sell TVs in Brazil anymore…
Microsoft has been offering this resolution for a long time, as well as supporting technologies such as G-Sync, FreeSync and variable refresh rates (VRR).
Now I have a great gaming monitor, but I have to play in full HD with full features or 4K with dowscale giving up resources (like HDR – monitor limitation).
Sony declares that “if you are interested, you can make it available”, now PLACES THE FEATURE AND LEAVES THE PEOPLE FREE TO USE. The consumer will not be asking for GOING TO CHANGE PLATFORM.
Anyway, I should research you more before purchasing the PS5. But as the PS4 Pro looked really good on that same monitor, I didn’t think I would face this situation.

  • I want one ps5

  • I’m adding this update to my invisible PS5, don’t have one yet.

  • What really needs to be talked about, is System Software Update 9.00, because I personally feel, like this isn’t getting a lot of attention, when it really needs it.

  • I updated yesterday and shortly got the green screen crash shortly after for the first time. :/

  • Is this a joke? I have attempted to buy a PS5 for almost a year now. Hey have the nerve to tell me about software upgrades? New gaming experiences? What nerve.

  • this is all nice – but where’s 1440p support?
