PS5 September System Software Update launches globally tomorrow

Includes new UX features and customization options, 3D Audio for built-in TV speakers, and M.2 SSD storage expansion

Tomorrow, we’re pleased to launch our second major PS5 system software update to all PS5 owners globally. The update includes a variety of enhancements to the PS5 console experience as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. It also features M.2 SSD storage expansion, which enables PS5 players to store and play PS5 games, PS4 games, and media apps directly from the expanded high-speed storage.

We’re also expanding mobile features with support for PS Remote Play over mobile networks starting tomorrow, and the ability to view Share Screen broadcasts on PS App beginning next Thursday, Sept. 23.

Thanks to everyone in the community who participated in our system update beta — your support and feedback was valuable. Here are some of the key new features coming to PS5, PS4 and our mobile apps:

PS5 September System Software Update Features

PS5 UX Enhancements

The PS5 September Update features new UX enhancements that make it easier than ever for players to view, personalize and manage their game content and console experience:

  • Control Center customization. Players can now customize their Control Center more freely by rearranging or choosing which controls to hide or unhide at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enhanced Game Base. Players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center.

While viewing Game Base in full screen, players can also see how many of their friends are online, busy, or offline, as well as accept, decline or cancel multiple friend requests at once.

  • Game Library and Home Screen updates. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they’ll now appear separately in the “Installed” tab of the Game Library and on the Home screen. Each game’s tile now also clearly indicates its platform.
  • Screen Reader controls.  Players can now pause or resume Screen Reader (Press “PS + Triangle buttons”) and have it repeat anything it reads (Press “PS  + R1 buttons”).

New Gaming and Social Experience Customizations

  • PlayStation Now resolution selector and connection test tool. PlayStation Now subscribers can choose between 720p or 1080p (depending on individual game) to accommodate their preferred video resolution for game streaming. A streaming connection test also helps them identify and troubleshoot any problems with their connection.
  • New Accolade Type: “Leader.” Following an online match, players can award others with a fourth accolade type, “Leader,” which is visible on players’ profiles.

  • Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. When players compete in challenges for a better time or a higher score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge card in the Control Center, or from their Media Gallery. Players have direct control over this functionality via their Captures and Broadcast settings.

  • New Trophy tracker. We’ve added a new Trophy Tracker that lets players quickly access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.

3D Audio Support for Built-In TV Speakers

The PS5 September Update adds support for players to experience 3D audio through their built-in TV speakers. Once enabled in the Sound menu, this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.* Players can measure the acoustics of their room using the microphone on their DualSense wireless controller to apply the 3D audio setting that’s optimized for their room.**

3D audio via compatible headsets on PS5 has been a popular feature among fans and developers. We’re thrilled to bring this feature to life for players directly through their built-in TV speakers, in addition to the headset support that’s been available since launch.

In addition, players with a Pulse 3D Wireless Headset now have access to equalizer settings within Sound Controls, allowing them to customize the sound profile according to their preference.

M.2 SSD Storage Expansion

Starting tomorrow, PS5 players around the globe can expand their storage capacity with an M.2 SSD, a type of high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in the PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console.

Once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. You can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options.

Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the minimum performance and size requirements outlined on this page. Using an M.2 SSD also requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure (such as a heatsink) that meets the dimensional requirements. Please read the page linked above carefully before purchasing any M.2 SSD or cooling structure for use with PS5.

Here’s a look at how to install an M.2 SSD in your PS5 console:

PS Remote Play App and PS App Enhancements

  • PS Remote Play App over mobile networks
    • With the PS Remote Play app, players have enjoyed the ability to remotely stream and play PS4 and PS5 games, switch between games, and browse their console’s menus on any compatible device connected to their broadband network.*** Now, players using the mobile app for iOS and Android have the option of using a mobile data connection when WiFi is not available.
    • Broadband internet with at least 5Mbps is required for PS Remote Play. For the best experience, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbps.
    • To help manage the amount of data used through a mobile connection, players can select their preferred video quality for mobile data streaming.
    • Please note the quality and connectivity of your Remote Play experience may vary depending on your mobile carrier network and network environment.

  • View Share Screen broadcasts on PS App
    • Starting next Thursday, Sept. 23, a PS App update will begin rolling out globally and give users the ability to view their friends’ Share Screen broadcasts together.
    • To start, join a party voice chat from your mobile device with a friend who’s playing on a PS5 console. Then ask your friend on PS5 to start their Share Screen broadcast. Please note, only players on PS5 can broadcast via Share Screen.
    • The Android version of the update is a phased release and may take one week until the update is available on your mobile device.

PS4 Console Enhancements

We’re also introducing some new features for PS4, including the ability for players to view their PS5 trophies on their PS4 profile and Trophy list. Players can also view other players’ PS5 trophies on PS4. On both PS4 and PS5 consoles, Party owners now also have the ability to disband a Party without having to remove players individually.

Which feature are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments.

*3D audio for built-in TV speakers needs to be enabled manually through the Sound menu in the PS5 console’s system settings (it’s off by default).
**A DualSense wireless controller update releasing alongside the PS5 September update is required to activate this feature.

  • What time does the update release? Will it be available at midnight.

  • Does anyone know what time it will drop? Is it midnight or later in the day?

  • Can you add an update to allow ds4 controllers for ps5 games? Dual sense hurts my hands; unfortunately I cannot use it. I’ll have to sell my ps5 otherwise If alternative controller options don’t become available.

    • This would be a nice update.

    • That would be nice. But there are unique functions of the Dual-sense that games could use,.. without those features it might break the game. Sony wants to avoid people to buy PS5 games and get angry that their older DS4 controller breaks the experience.

What about the Dual Sense controller hurts your hand? I would really love Playstation if they made an Adaptive Controller like Xbox did. It helped a lot of people play games that they would not be able to experience any other way.

Maybe Scuf will release a premium controller for the PS5 that you could customize to not hurt you hand as much.

    • I think it’s the tapered handles combined with slightly more inset sticks (compared to the ds4). It’s especially bad with games that heavily use the triggers. I’m bummed I can’t finish Demon’s Souls! It causes pain in my thumb joints particularly. Weird, because I’ve never had issues with controllers in 30 years of gaming. I wish I could take part in the excitement over the DualSense, but instead I’m just really hoping they allow ds4 at some point, or like your said, a third party option.

  • 几点更新

  • 在几点钟更新

  • Next 1440p support pls. There are many PC monitor users also playstation fan.

  • Jag skulle vilja kunna lägga mina spel i mappar på ps5 som man kan på ps4. Det blir inte lika mycket på skärmen, lättare att hitta olika spel och skulle se bättre ut.

  • what time will it be released as i thought it would be midnight but still nothing

  • Anyone know what time the update comes out. Because I’m trying to get all my games downloaded on my New SSD asap when the update comes out!

  • Seeing an iPhone and not a Xperia makes me sad

  • What time on September 15 will the update be available

  • Why haven’t you guys uploaded the most import features, like the Activities section? Being able to like, comment, and share things. Some gamers don’t like the mundaneness of FB, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media outlets and we really want what we had for the PS4 for the PS5. To tell you the truth, it’s one of the reasons why I don’t buy a PS5…come SOA stop messing around…

  • Maybe this is just my settings I don’t know, but I’d love to see a fix for having to re-download a game or app every time it gets an update.

  • What time will this be available?

  • Awesome!!!
but hey can we get a PlayStation Companion App for DESKTOP? id love to chat with my friends on playstation party while I’m on pc. And I mean Companion app not the remote play app. pretty please.

  • I’m having troubles with my 4k movies crashing every 30 mins, anyone know if this will be fixed in this new update? Very annoying issue, I’d love to watch my movies on the PS5 :)

  • Aaand, still no web browser for PS5. -_-

  • In terms of 3D audio, what about my stereo system? It is connected via an optical cable. Does it also support 3d audio? Or is it just about the TV speakers?

  • The new PS5 system update has a September 15 release date. There’s no official launch time, although previous downloads have been available by midday. According to the patch notes, the new update makes lots of significant changes to the user-interface and overall experience.

  • Really hope they’ll add Dolby Atmos or ‘3D audio’ that supports a surround with height speakers in the near future…

  • and as normal with sony they have kept us waiting all this time for the update and they say its being released today you would think it would it would be available for download from midnight but o no its 8.30am and still nothing its a bloody joke

  • Serious Question: Not trolling; what time will the PS5 be?

  • Bring Support 1440p please Sony many user want this

  • When will the firmware roll out in the uk. nothing so far today,

  • 1440p, VRR and a PRO/Elite controller

    • What features do you want to see in a Pro/Elite controller?

I have never hated a controller enough to spend like $150 to find a better solution.

  • CAN’T WAIT FOR THE UPDATE I HAVE A 2TB M.2…. AND I THE PLUS HEADPHONES TOO…. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK SONY

  • I’m excited about the remote play over mobile network. Now I’m able to play games at work. I’ve been hoping/Wishing for this for a long time now!!!!

  • This is great and all but as a fan of themes and the great lengths I went to get some for my PS4 I would love for ps5 to plz get to support them on the system.. vrr support obvidouly would be great.. also Disney+ to have support for 4K streaming… still play the system everyday..!!

  • Would love the ability to remove/unpin game tiles without being forced to delete the game, especially if I’m done with the game, and have moved it to my extended storage or have accidentally booted a game installed on extended storage. Also, don’t automatically pin PS4 game tiles that are being downloaded/installed onto extended storage to the Game menu – add an option to manually pin the game tile of a PS4 title installed onto extended storage you want to play to the Game menu without having to boot the game first.

  • Bluetooth support for wireless headphones like the Switch

  • Badly need 1440p support, PLEASE!
My monitor can’t downscale 4K to 1440p so it looks pretty bad on my monitor. We need it!

  • Sony can we please get support for UAC2 DACs for USB audio out?

  • I’ve reported you multiple translation issues about the beta on the official feedback channel, none of them are fixed in the public fw version. So why should we report anything…?

  • Okay, but why did the PS5 & PS4 versions of cross-gen games have to separated instead of being merged under one icon? It takes four seconds to read what version you’re about to use. Could’ve at least give us an option to turn separate icons on or off.

  • Any chance of giving 4K movie playback, with HDR switched on. Whenever I try playing a 4k movie through my Ps5 as soon as I switch on HDR the screen just flickers constantly. This only stops when I’ve closed out of the player app and switch off HDR.

    Cheers guys

  • Where is 1440p support???

  • Dear Sony

    Please add the 1440p support.

    Respectfully
    Gaming community (poorer majority)

  • Thank you for the update.
But I have a question how about doing another update that will let you delete trophies for games that no one has anymore because I hate going thru my trophies list seeing games that I had on my PS3 & PS4 now that I have a PS5.

  • Ok, the update is launched now. It’s going in the right direction but still, the lack of making folders for the games is still a big ??? Even the ps3 could handle folders. Is the ps5 not strong enough to be able to handle folders one makes to place games in?!
Also, when will you bring back the more social aspects of PSN to the Ps5? Now there is little reason to check up on what other friends do as one have no possibility to interact like one could on the ps4 with commenting on trophies taken or games they started up and played and so on.
That whole nice social aspect on the ps4 you just took away. Very weird.

Also, why did you decide to remove themes?! Again is the PS5 too weak to handle stuff like this or what?!

Can’t help but feel the UI that is currently on the ps5 is a very dated, old trial version you have used and decided “it’s good enough”.

  • what about the rest mode issue is it fixed will it ever be fixed?
other thing also i would really like to see folders come back

  • The “trophy tracker” doesn’t even track trophies. It’s just taking up screen space to remind you what the trophy is.. Doesn’t even track in real time. Thought you’d have the sense to do it like Xbox & allow it to be turned transparent.

  • PLEASE add 1440p support. Many of us clearly want it. Many of your games run at native 1440p and then get checkerboarded to 4k anyways.

Why can xbox implement this and VRR since last gen? (4 years ago) but you guys cant?

  • -Can we PLEASE get easier navigation to and from the full trophy list of whatever game we’re currently playing? Why not just add another tab next to the “Recently Created” tab when you press the PS button that takes us directly to the full trophy list of the game we’re playing? If I’m already playing a game and want to check my trophy progress, I obviously don’t want to check the progress of literally every other game I’ve ever played in my life. It wastes time having to do this.

-I know the big pretty pictures are fun to look at, but can we have a vertical trophy list instead like the PS4? It sucks having to scroll through and click on each individual trophy just to find the ones we’re looking for. At least this way we can read through multiple trophies at the same time. Its faster that way.

-Why don’t we have themes anymore? Customization makes your PlayStation feel like it actually belongs to YOU and its not just some carbon copy of everyone else’s.

-Can we get different colored faceplates? If you’re going to sue people for doing it on their own, why not just offer the option from the beginning? There’s obviously a market for it and you felt threatened that someone else was going to make all of your “potential” profit because you guys were too slow and hadn’t given players the option yet. Otherwise you wouldn’t have sued. Again…customization.

-Can you guys stop being tightwads and add Bluetooth Audio? I know you want people to buy your PS5 brand specific headsets, but let’s be honest, players never actually asked for PlayStation branded headsets to begin with and its a market that you shouldn’t have tried to break into. There’s too much competition, especially when the headsets you offer don’t measure up to the quality that other headsets do. I bought the Sony XM4 headset specifically for my PS5 just to realize it’s not compatible. That makes no sense…IT’S THE SAME COMPANY! Stop being stubborn, take the loss, and let the people who want to pay top dollar for quality do it. If people want to be cheap, they can buy your headsets instead. You guys are already making a killing on the PS5 and your stock prices are through the roof, so taking a small loss on headsets isn’t going to kill you. Throw us a bone…

  • What is a screen reader. What’s it’s function. Also what Android updated version should we have. Does anything before 10 work?

  • What about more options in the media player, not being able to turn subtitles on and off is a pain.

  • Anyone having problems getting the update to work? It keep putting me in safe mode.

  • Where is are game folders that I edit!?!?!??! It super frustrating to not have all of my PS VR games in a folder on my PS5.
    Please add this basic feature.

  • Do you have a VRR display? What model do you have?

  • Some of the PS4 Game did not show up on recent play summary , Sniper Elite 4 is one of them

  • Please, fix the licensing problem with some PS Plus games for active users. Can’t access Destruction Allstars, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, COD Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered among others. They got the lock and restoring licenses doesn’t fix it.
