PS5 September System Software Update launches globally tomorrow

Includes new UX features and customization options, 3D Audio for built-in TV speakers, and M.2 SSD storage expansion

Tomorrow, we’re pleased to launch our second major PS5 system software update to all PS5 owners globally. The update includes a variety of enhancements to the PS5 console experience as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. It also features M.2 SSD storage expansion, which enables PS5 players to store and play PS5 games, PS4 games, and media apps directly from the expanded high-speed storage.

We’re also expanding mobile features with support for PS Remote Play over mobile networks starting tomorrow, and the ability to view Share Screen broadcasts on PS App beginning next Thursday, Sept. 23.

Thanks to everyone in the community who participated in our system update beta — your support and feedback was valuable. Here are some of the key new features coming to PS5, PS4 and our mobile apps:

PS5 September System Software Update Features

PS5 UX Enhancements

The PS5 September Update features new UX enhancements that make it easier than ever for players to view, personalize and manage their game content and console experience:

  • Control Center customization. Players can now customize their Control Center more freely by rearranging or choosing which controls to hide or unhide at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enhanced Game Base. Players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center.

While viewing Game Base in full screen, players can also see how many of their friends are online, busy, or offline, as well as accept, decline or cancel multiple friend requests at once.

  • Game Library and Home Screen updates. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they’ll now appear separately in the “Installed” tab of the Game Library and on the Home screen. Each game’s tile now also clearly indicates its platform.
  • Screen Reader controls.  Players can now pause or resume Screen Reader (Press “PS + Triangle buttons”) and have it repeat anything it reads (Press “PS  + R1 buttons”).

New Gaming and Social Experience Customizations

  • PlayStation Now resolution selector and connection test tool. PlayStation Now subscribers can choose between 720p or 1080p (depending on individual game) to accommodate their preferred video resolution for game streaming. A streaming connection test also helps them identify and troubleshoot any problems with their connection.
  • New Accolade Type: “Leader.” Following an online match, players can award others with a fourth accolade type, “Leader,” which is visible on players’ profiles.

  • Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. When players compete in challenges for a better time or a higher score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge card in the Control Center, or from their Media Gallery. Players have direct control over this functionality via their Captures and Broadcast settings.

  • New Trophy tracker. We’ve added a new Trophy Tracker that lets players quickly access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.

3D Audio Support for Built-In TV Speakers

The PS5 September Update adds support for players to experience 3D audio through their built-in TV speakers. Once enabled in the Sound menu, this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.* Players can measure the acoustics of their room using the microphone on their DualSense wireless controller to apply the 3D audio setting that’s optimized for their room.**

3D audio via compatible headsets on PS5 has been a popular feature among fans and developers. We’re thrilled to bring this feature to life for players directly through their built-in TV speakers, in addition to the headset support that’s been available since launch.

In addition, players with a Pulse 3D Wireless Headset now have access to equalizer settings within Sound Controls, allowing them to customize the sound profile according to their preference.

M.2 SSD Storage Expansion

Starting tomorrow, PS5 players around the globe can expand their storage capacity with an M.2 SSD, a type of high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in the PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console.

Once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. You can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options.

Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the minimum performance and size requirements outlined on this page. Using an M.2 SSD also requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure (such as a heatsink) that meets the dimensional requirements. Please read the page linked above carefully before purchasing any M.2 SSD or cooling structure for use with PS5.

Here’s a look at how to install an M.2 SSD in your PS5 console:

PS Remote Play App and PS App Enhancements

  • PS Remote Play App over mobile networks
    • With the PS Remote Play app, players have enjoyed the ability to remotely stream and play PS4 and PS5 games, switch between games, and browse their console’s menus on any compatible device connected to their broadband network.*** Now, players using the mobile app for iOS and Android have the option of using a mobile data connection when WiFi is not available.
    • Broadband internet with at least 5Mbps is required for PS Remote Play. For the best experience, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbps.
    • To help manage the amount of data used through a mobile connection, players can select their preferred video quality for mobile data streaming.
    • Please note the quality and connectivity of your Remote Play experience may vary depending on your mobile carrier network and network environment.

  • View Share Screen broadcasts on PS App
    • Starting next Thursday, Sept. 23, a PS App update will begin rolling out globally and give users the ability to view their friends’ Share Screen broadcasts together.
    • To start, join a party voice chat from your mobile device with a friend who’s playing on a PS5 console. Then ask your friend on PS5 to start their Share Screen broadcast. Please note, only players on PS5 can broadcast via Share Screen.
    • The Android version of the update is a phased release and may take one week until the update is available on your mobile device.

PS4 Console Enhancements

We’re also introducing some new features for PS4, including the ability for players to view their PS5 trophies on their PS4 profile and Trophy list. Players can also view other players’ PS5 trophies on PS4. On both PS4 and PS5 consoles, Party owners now also have the ability to disband a Party without having to remove players individually.

Which feature are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments.

*3D audio for built-in TV speakers needs to be enabled manually through the Sound menu in the PS5 console’s system settings (it’s off by default).
**A DualSense wireless controller update releasing alongside the PS5 September update is required to activate this feature.

  • The ability to expand the storage like “omg finally it’s here” took you guys a year to make it possible but i still appreciate it.

  • It’s nice to get improvements, but please, bring on game folders functionality!

  • Hi there, whats the arrangement for Beta testers. Do we have to revert to the regular system software then upgrade or is done automatically?

  • M.2 Storage finally! GJ. Now bring VR back please…

  • FINALLY WE HAVE 3D AUDIO FOR TV SPEAKERS!!!

    BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FEATURE.

    THANK YOU SONY!!!

  • Oh, great, another psn connection failure schedule for tomorrow… thanks for the heads up.

  • How about an update on actually allowing us to use our PS+ Cloud storage? Its pretty ridiculous that I can have 97+GB of storage “free” yet be told I can’t upload because I’ve reached the limit on the number of files that can be stored. Why is there a storage size limit when you can hit the file number cap with less than 3% of the storage limit reached?

    • I’ve already run into the problem. It is ridiculous to limit the number of files. The 100 GB cloud storage is just a marketing gimmick.

  • Is the 3D audio update going to benefit my sound bar now also??

  • They should add the equalizer settings to other headsets if possible.

  • Cool update, cheers.

  • How about fixing system crashing issues before QOL improvements? My system still crashes when I use Rest Mode, which is unacceptable. For a year I’ve been told you are working on it. I guess I’ll just request a brand new PS5 from you before my warranty expires.

  • Still no ability to add folders for games. Seriously – if it can be done on PS4, why not PS5?

  • So… no folders? Pls, that’s all want

  • Please, fix the problem with some games getting locked out for active PS Plus members, can’t play Destruction Allstars anymore after extending my subscription

  • At least now I can play on my own data rather than the schools wack WIFI on the PS Remote Play App.

    • One question I have is if my PlayStation 5 disc drive supposed to be some what loud when inserting and starting PS5 games? Only happens with my PS5 games and not my PS4 discs, blue-rays, or 4K UHD movies.

  • I’ve loved using some of these changes in Beta! Unfortunately my PS5 has been shutting down whenever I use rest mode since launch. Would love to see a fix for that!

  • Please add 1440p support! The Xbox Series supports 1440p without any issues and you all have basically the same chips. There are tons of us out here that use 1440p gaming monitors to play PS5. Having it only be 1080p really sucks.

  • No one cares, add 1440p support.

  • Amazing!

  • at what time itll be available for download?

  • Please add 1440p.

  • 1440p!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!

  • Good stuff so far just keep it coming ;P

  • Really disappointed that we haven’t gotten the option for native 1440p output on PS5. :/

  • We need folders please Sony!
This is such a basic yet essential feature, it should be at the top of your list to implement. I have hundreds of games in my library, and while I know what I’m looking for, it can still take a while to find at times.
But when my kids are looking for something to play, they can never find everything because even with parental controls on, the library still shows the games they can’t play. This could so easily be solved if I could place all the kid friendly games into a single folder for them to browse.
    Please make it happen.

  • Please for the love of all things good, add the ability to backup PS5 saves to a usb drive!

  • Nice work on the trophy tracker! I use it all the time on Xbox, can’t wait to start using it here as well.

  • Alphabetical library default option, please.

  • 1440p support please! ❤ 1440p 120 fps is a dream! 4k 120hz tvs/monitors are waaaay too expensive. Please Sony ❤

  • Still can’t find. PS5

  • What about VR Support

  • So what about (3D) Audio for Receivers?

  • How about that Disney App not being able to watch content that is in 4k? Or is that a Disney thing. PS5 the only device I own that doesn’t offer 4k.guess gotta continue to stream on Apple tv for those movies…

  • Cool news overall but I’m here to add to the hundreds (maybe thousands) of other comments requesting basic updates like 1440p resolution. Cheers!

  • Please Sony add ultra-wide 32:9 support to ps5.

  • I don’t like how PS5 displays trophies. Can we update them to be like they show on PS4?

  • For the love of God add 3d movie playback back so I can get rid of my ps4. 3d movies in psvr is awesome. Can’t do it on my 5 such a disappointment.

    • Oh yeah for sure.
VR headsets finally gave 3d movies justice.
I bought quite the catalouge of them since I figured out you could watch them in the VR headset.
Quite unbelivable that the ps5 doesn’t support it as it’s even a much more powerful console and there is even a new VR headset on its way for the system.

  • What I’ve missed in the beta:

    – folders
    – more game tiles on main screen
    – PS5 save backup to USB
    – update history for PS5 games
    – option to default A-Z game listing
    – good old trophy pop up sound
    – VRR

    • You’ll never see PS5 save backup to USB. They removed it do to ramped cheating on PS4. while it did take about 2-3 years, eventually the encryption of saves was cracked and save hacking became a thing.

even if PS5 improved that, we all know someone would crack it eventually…unless of course they never allow saves to leave system in first place.

I hate it too, because some games still have 1 slot saves in 2021 for some damn reason and it’s more tedious to do cloud backups of them to play new games cause you have to first disable auto cloud upload and then of course eventually at some point have to go “do I keep this new save or revert to old cloud one?” because without USB save you can never choose to keep both. :\

  • So looking forward to this! I am just a few hours away from getting the update, and I’m gonna order the SN850 right after that.

  • Great job on adding mobile network support for remote play but when will remote play work with a PS5 controller. Right now it is useless. Unfortunately there is no need for the other update without the support for PS5 controller.

  • I’m excited about two main features. The 3D audio on Standard TV speakers and of course the M.2 expansion being enabled. Unfortunately I did not make it into the beta phase and my WD Black SN850 M.2 drive is sat here glaring at me. Thanks Sony for this exciting update!

    • PS one option I would like add in the future is an option to pin a number of titles to screen so they don’t drop off. My children play lots of different games and I have to hunt for the current game I’m playing. I know about profiles but there’s a reason they use my account, online gaming. I cannot afford ps plus for each child. How about a PS plus Family price so up to 5-6 profiles can access plus functionality.

  • When will there be a fix for the Rest Mode crashing glitch? That is a huge issue that many are experiencing. When will I be able to safely use Rest Mode?

  • Please add option to force 120hz like xbox is doing. Or please add the resolution in the edid of the x900f Sony TV. Works great on PC. Why cant my PS5 display 120hz on my Sony TV! No sense!

  • You are trying so hard to push your 3d/special audio, yet don’t actually support industry standards like 5.1.2 or 7.1.2 setups that are literally same thing. You aren’t winning points reinventing wheel while ignoring industry standards

You doon’t even have to licene dolby atmos if you want to be cheap, but you should at least let users make software selection to say “this is a 5.1.2 system, not a 7.1.

It improperly detects mine as 7.1 and surrund is messed up in games since it sends audio information wrong (obviously) unless I set it to 5.1. It’s an inconsistent messy experience. Meanwhile, the other guy not only supports 5.1.2 but even upmixing and filling channel with audio even if application doesn’t support it via dolby atmos upmixer. Technically I can do that too by upmixing your bad 5.1 signal but it’s not quite the same as a proper implimentationi that developers could also tap into and use properly.

your hardware is amazing, controller is amazing, game is amazing, software support is kinda abysmal and stuck in 2010. Please do better.

  • M.2 HELL YEAH! I don’t see this mentioned a lot but “Output to Headphones” setting needs to be added to the Quick Menu. You have to go all the way to SETTINGS > SOUND > AUDIO OUTPUT > All Audio or Chat Audio. I swap between them a lot and it is very time consuming when I’m in the middle of an online game. Also I hope they figure out 1440p 120hz mode! my tv is limited to hdmi 2.0 but can output 1440p 120hz and I prefer butter smooth turning over 4k 60hz. HDR 1440p looks good enough for me.

  • I’m excited PS remote app allows over mobile networks without the need wi-fi I can travel around LTE or 5G networks.

5G is pretty enough to steam any want with an unlimited plan.

  • So loving these improvements a lot !!

But I would really love to see Dynamic themes ( I miss my LastOfUs2 day and night one)
folders we’re so handy in keeping our games organized
Activity feed miss seing what others post from trophies unlocked to screenshots

I would love see PIP also in being able to watch Youtube while gaming
More Activitity cards supported in PS4 games

  • Anyone know the exact time when the update goes live? Hoping for a midnight release so I can finally put in my 2 TB ASAP!

  • Still no themes still no folders still no vrr support still no 1440p support come on Sony tbh scrap the themes part they need to fix the messy ui first but all the other things are no excuses Sony shipped their tvs with vrr advertising as ps5 ready yet the ps5 doesn’t support it come on Sony do better please

  • Showing your app on an iPhone??? You don’t even take your own brand serious… Ridiculous.
