PS5 September System Software Update launches globally tomorrow

Includes new UX features and customization options, 3D Audio for built-in TV speakers, and M.2 SSD storage expansion

Tomorrow, we’re pleased to launch our second major PS5 system software update to all PS5 owners globally. The update includes a variety of enhancements to the PS5 console experience as well as 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers. It also features M.2 SSD storage expansion, which enables PS5 players to store and play PS5 games, PS4 games, and media apps directly from the expanded high-speed storage.

We’re also expanding mobile features with support for PS Remote Play over mobile networks starting tomorrow, and the ability to view Share Screen broadcasts on PS App beginning next Thursday, Sept. 23.

Thanks to everyone in the community who participated in our system update beta — your support and feedback was valuable. Here are some of the key new features coming to PS5, PS4 and our mobile apps:

PS5 September System Software Update Features

PS5 UX Enhancements

The PS5 September Update features new UX enhancements that make it easier than ever for players to view, personalize and manage their game content and console experience:

  • Control Center customization. Players can now customize their Control Center more freely by rearranging or choosing which controls to hide or unhide at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enhanced Game Base. Players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center.

While viewing Game Base in full screen, players can also see how many of their friends are online, busy, or offline, as well as accept, decline or cancel multiple friend requests at once.

  • Game Library and Home Screen updates. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they’ll now appear separately in the “Installed” tab of the Game Library and on the Home screen. Each game’s tile now also clearly indicates its platform.
  • Screen Reader controls.  Players can now pause or resume Screen Reader (Press “PS + Triangle buttons”) and have it repeat anything it reads (Press “PS  + R1 buttons”).

New Gaming and Social Experience Customizations

  • PlayStation Now resolution selector and connection test tool. PlayStation Now subscribers can choose between 720p or 1080p (depending on individual game) to accommodate their preferred video resolution for game streaming. A streaming connection test also helps them identify and troubleshoot any problems with their connection.
  • New Accolade Type: “Leader.” Following an online match, players can award others with a fourth accolade type, “Leader,” which is visible on players’ profiles.

  • Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. When players compete in challenges for a better time or a higher score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge card in the Control Center, or from their Media Gallery. Players have direct control over this functionality via their Captures and Broadcast settings.

  • New Trophy tracker. We’ve added a new Trophy Tracker that lets players quickly access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.

3D Audio Support for Built-In TV Speakers

The PS5 September Update adds support for players to experience 3D audio through their built-in TV speakers. Once enabled in the Sound menu, this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion.* Players can measure the acoustics of their room using the microphone on their DualSense wireless controller to apply the 3D audio setting that’s optimized for their room.**

3D audio via compatible headsets on PS5 has been a popular feature among fans and developers. We’re thrilled to bring this feature to life for players directly through their built-in TV speakers, in addition to the headset support that’s been available since launch.

In addition, players with a Pulse 3D Wireless Headset now have access to equalizer settings within Sound Controls, allowing them to customize the sound profile according to their preference.

M.2 SSD Storage Expansion

Starting tomorrow, PS5 players around the globe can expand their storage capacity with an M.2 SSD, a type of high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in the PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console.

Once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. You can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options.

Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the minimum performance and size requirements outlined on this page. Using an M.2 SSD also requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure (such as a heatsink) that meets the dimensional requirements. Please read the page linked above carefully before purchasing any M.2 SSD or cooling structure for use with PS5.

Here’s a look at how to install an M.2 SSD in your PS5 console:

PS Remote Play App and PS App Enhancements

  • PS Remote Play App over mobile networks
    • With the PS Remote Play app, players have enjoyed the ability to remotely stream and play PS4 and PS5 games, switch between games, and browse their console’s menus on any compatible device connected to their broadband network.*** Now, players using the mobile app for iOS and Android have the option of using a mobile data connection when WiFi is not available.
    • Broadband internet with at least 5Mbps is required for PS Remote Play. For the best experience, we recommend a high-speed connection with upload and download speeds of at least 15 Mbps.
    • To help manage the amount of data used through a mobile connection, players can select their preferred video quality for mobile data streaming.
    • Please note the quality and connectivity of your Remote Play experience may vary depending on your mobile carrier network and network environment.

  • View Share Screen broadcasts on PS App
    • Starting next Thursday, Sept. 23, a PS App update will begin rolling out globally and give users the ability to view their friends’ Share Screen broadcasts together.
    • To start, join a party voice chat from your mobile device with a friend who’s playing on a PS5 console. Then ask your friend on PS5 to start their Share Screen broadcast. Please note, only players on PS5 can broadcast via Share Screen.
    • The Android version of the update is a phased release and may take one week until the update is available on your mobile device.

PS4 Console Enhancements

We’re also introducing some new features for PS4, including the ability for players to view their PS5 trophies on their PS4 profile and Trophy list. Players can also view other players’ PS5 trophies on PS4. On both PS4 and PS5 consoles, Party owners now also have the ability to disband a Party without having to remove players individually.

Which feature are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments.

*3D audio for built-in TV speakers needs to be enabled manually through the Sound menu in the PS5 console’s system settings (it’s off by default).
**A DualSense wireless controller update releasing alongside the PS5 September update is required to activate this feature.

  • Please bring back themes, folders, and the ability to view patch notes for PS5 games. Also let us check for updates on games that aren’t on the main scroll bar. On the PS4 we could go into our library and manually update any game we wanted to.

  • What about 1440p? :/

  • Finally, mobile data is enabled on remote play. But no VRR and 1440p support.

  • 1440p and VRR please…

  • Is the feature included to hide screenshot notifications similar to PS4? A really pain when screenshotting in quick succession!

  • NONE! Wheres 1440p support and VRR? Its been almost a year!

Xbox has been supporting 1440p since last gen for 4 years now! Xbox series X launched with support for both! But no of course 1440p isnt supported in a anti-consumer attempt to make people buy yours tvs.

Ive been buying playstation since PSX days but this console is just a disappointment and its now collecting dust with how blurry it looks on my monitor.

    • buy their TV’s? There are so many good panels on the market today so I highly doubt this is the reason 1440p is not supported yet.

  • Huge! Now multiple of my PS4 friends can view my share screen and I don’t have to send them individual share play invites.

  • So when do you plan to support 3D audio through a surround sound system? Seems kind of weird that you’re focusing so much on simulated 3D audio via stereo output, while those of us who have 5.1+ surround sound receivers are put on the backburner. You’d think it would be the easiest audio output to support considering we actually have speakers completely surrounding us in a 3D space… I’ve been holding off on playing some of the major PS5 releases because I want to hear them the best way possible, not through a headseat or tinny TV speakers. :(

  • Please, please, please – make it clear on a games page on the playstation store if the game supports 3D audio natively or not. If there was just a little logo or something in the details on the games page then I would know and wouldn’t have to try to work out if it is supported by ear (for example when I first played Control PS5 I did not know if it supported 3D Audio natively or if it was just being up-mixed, I spent an age flipping back and forth between 3D Audio on and off to try to work it out by ear – if there was just an icon saying if a game supports it it would save all this nonsense, same place as Remote Play supported and Vibration function icons would be perfect). PLEASE!

    • It is because 3D Audio upmixing sounds very bad so need to know whether to turn it off, doesn’t seem like an unreasonable request, thanks.

    • Games should totally report which technologies they support, including 3D audio and 4k and 5.1 vs Dts:x type thing.

  • Very nice. The only thing missing on that list for me is tile pinning for my games on the home screen, and I guess folders because choice is always good.

  • Thank you for the update!

Please take care of the following points next:

    – Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
    – Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
    – AMD FidelityFX
    – Dolby Vision for games
    – Folder !!!!!
    – Volume of the disk drive when starting the console
    – Feature compared to “FPS Boost” from Microsoft
    – Automatic updates of all games that are installed, not just the last 10 played / installed
    – ..or the possibility to check all games manually for updates at once
    – Controller updates without a cable connection
    – Brings back the activity feed
    – Change log (update history) for PS5 games
    – Menu point directly to the trophies in the control center
    – Designs / wallpapers for the home menu
    – Increase the number of games on the home screen (9 – unlimited)
    – Increase the battery life of the controller to the one before the last major update
    – Bring back the trophy “pling” sound

  • This looks to be a great update overall. :D

  • missing features for me:
    1) VRR
    2) better screenshot, video sharing.Maybe access to screenshot folder via PS App on phone.
    3) folders for better organization in library…

    • Folders for sure.
Screenshot / video sharing to the app would be great, but I just use private Youtube uploads currently.
      Meh @ VRR.

  • So for the SSD is the limit really 4tb? I ask because T-Force is touting SSDs specifically made for the PS5 and their highest capacity drive is 8tb. They come out in Oct. Why would someone make an 8tb drive thats supposed to be designed specifically with PS5 in mind if it’s not gonna work?

  • -For those asking for VRR support-

VRR hasn’t been implemented due to upcoming new HDMI protocols, which schedule to release in December 2021…And Sony has been waiting for that before enabling it on PS5 and on their TVs

  • What about the option of being able to save PS5 game saves on external hard drives or USB sticks? So far, this has only been possible online via a paid PS Plus membership. Once you have a defective console, you can start all over again with all games. It works with PS4 saved games too. Why are we still denied that?

  • Makes no sense release an update for the PS app that benefits *ONLY* one console type when you have to major consoles on the market. What’s preventing PS4 players from benefiting from the share play on the ps app?????

    • Yiu can’t share screen one ps4 that’s why (yes you can SHARE PLAY but that’s VERY different than ps5 share screen feature, which if you had a ps5 you’d know that)

  • Hum, excited to test out the 3D audio. I use a 5.1 system so guessing it will be moot. But might help with games that don’t understand my back speakers are for music and the front speaker is for speaking. Looking at you mass effect. Or Tales of Arise that puts everything in the front speakers beside birds chirping. Dreams.

    • Agreed. Except I don’t think this is giving us height mapping for proper home theatres, just the standard stereo audio people. The same 3D system the headset uses.

  • LETTTS GOOO YES YES YES!

  • When will you fix the Playstation store? The fact it’s nearly impossible to find new demos of games to try on the PS5 is a joke

Also pls make it so one can scroll through trophies as on the ps4. This sideway scrolling that currently is in place is not as good.

And bring back the what’s new thing on the UI. It was a cool feature on the ps4.

  • This is a good update! Can’t wait to use my new M2 drive.

As a side note, I would really like the ability to download gameplay recordings and screenshots to my phone from the Playstation App. That would make it a lot easier to share with friends and on social media.

  • I hope there is a fix included for the controller issue

  • Still no support for *actual* height speakers on full home theatre systems?
Where’s the DTS:x or Dolby Atmos or even Dolby ProLogic IIz encoding for height mapping?

  • Sony messed up this expansion slot to be easy and friendly for the mainstream consumers… it should have been a plug and play. Do they really expect mom and pops to be expert at buying the right M2 SSD specs. Official and recommended products would have been helpful. Instead we are going on trial and error and going to forums which ones works.

  • what about the SDR issue on PS5 (black color crushed) present with many ps4 games? It was also reported by Digital Foundry months ago and it is present on many games (e.g. Project Cars 2)

  • That is a great update, thank you!

But is it possible to enable the share screen, when a PS4 player is using it.

I am on PS5 and my friend on PS4. There is no share screen feature only share play and I can’t use the picture in picture mode on my PS5, when my friend is doing it.

  • Im still waiting for 3D Blu-ray Support please…..

  • Feature I want to see:

    1. Support for 1440p resolution, not everyone wants to/can play their PlayStation on the living room TV. Some if us have to/like to use monitors. 1440p resolution support would also allow the use of 120Hz refresh rate, which most 1440p monitors have. Xbox has it, why can’t PlayStation??

    2. Ability to use Freesync technology when you’re using a monitor that has it.

    3. Third Party Bluetooth compatibly. I would LOVE to be able to use my wireless earbuds to hear game audio and to chat while playing multiplayer games. This was an amazing feature on PS3 that worked very well and was taken away during the PS4 era. Heck, I’d even buy an official PlayStation wireless earbuds headset if there was one, sometimes it’s just not practical/comfortable to use the big bulky closed ear headphones.

    4. Ability to double-tap the PS button to go back to last task/screen you were at. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been frustrated at the amount of steps I have to take when altering something like 3D audio or messaging a friend back and forth. I was so used to being able to double-tap the PS button to go straight back to the settings page or my messages list.

    5. Ability to have in-game chat audio come through your TV and not your controller. Even when the controller is at max volume, the users talking in-game are barely audible.

    6. Ability to adjust voice chat vs. game volume when NOT in a Party Chat and/or using a headset plugged into your controller. Currently you can only do this if you have the official PS headset. This makes it tough for crossplay games using in-game voice chat unless you’re using the official Sony headset.

  • I’d love to see more accessibility features.

•I’d like to be able to use the zoom accessibility feature while streaming. I only currently have a PS4. Using zoom while streaming is locked on the PS4. From everything I’ve read it’s the same on the PS5

    • being able to manipulate things of the screen while using Zoom. For example, if I’m zoomed in to read something. I’d be nice to be able to still navigate menus or move my character.

    • More voice commands and possible integration with Amazon Echo or Google Assistant

There’s plenty more I can think of but those are just the ones off the top of my head. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

  • Wow lots of updates and not just for the console, but the PS app and Remote Play app too!! Excited to see the changes as fall season is here and more playtime inside.

  • These are all nice updates, especially the M.2 expansion, but I’m really just waiting for 1440p support and VRR.

Before anyone complains at me for wanting 1440p support, options are never a bad thing. My HDMI 2.0 TV is one of the few that supports 1440p at 120hz, so I’d much rather have play my 120hz games at 1440p than 1080p.

  • does all the pulse 3d features work with Razer Barracuda X Headsets

  • What if you have a sound bar or speaker system with dedicated height channel speakers…will 3D audio now work like Atmos (5.1.2 etc)?

  • The Friends tab should be the first tab on the upper left side of Game Base, not Parties tab.

  • Alright… but what about bug fixes, are y’all going to fix the green screen of death. I would like to be able to put my ps5 in rest mode without it crashing. And are y’all going to fix game crashes.

  • 1440p Monitor support will be great~~, TV is great but with monitor you can see much more details.

  • I’ve been having an issue with the controller’s joystick deadzone from the start.. It mostly occurs on PS4 games I’m playing on PS5 but I’ve also experienced it in Demon’s Souls. When I start the game up it feels great, but when I die, or reload, or go out of the game to check trophies or whatever, the sensitivity of my joystick is all messed up (like I suddenly can’t look around as slowly or smoothly anymore, and the deadzone of my joystick got larger). I only experience it on the right joystick since that’s the one to look around and can’t really feel it in the character’s movement on the left joystick. The only sort of solution seems to be restarting the game over and over until it feels right, and trying not to die or reload or go the home screen so as to avoid the issue from appearing. I’ve seen one thread discussing this problem but haven’t heard a lot about it otherwise. Please look into this.

    • Might also be something related to framerate? I know the LG CX isn’t great for 30fps, but it seems more like an issue on the console/controller side.
I know it isn’t my controller that’s broken but that it’s something that’s triggering it.

  • The PS4 Pro was Sony’s most prefect console, from the controller to the VR running great on it, the UI was probably the best also, The launch of PS4 was probably the best too, I felt like you guys were really listening to the gamers about what they wanted but then came the dreaded day you started talking about a new console and launching by the year end, I was kind of hoping it would just be talk since the 4 was so great and has a massive library and dev support, so i thought well when the 5 does release its got to be better with everything Sony has learned to make the 4 the best, but even though the 5 is somewhat faster than the 4Pro , it feels like it has taken a lot of steps backwards just to be different and it has been a really slow roll out of any features, but I’m glad to finally see these updates, I have been worried most were going to burn out the on board ssd from copying back and forth so many times to make room, even though they are mostly PS4 games.

  • Trophies also need to become easier to check. Why not add it to the control center? I either have to go to the game’s frontscreen or check my notifications to see if I got a trophy and go to the full list via there. It’s a hassle.

  • Really good looking update!

Personally I’m quite excited about the 3D audio on TV speakers. I think the 3D audio works great with headphones but I greatly prefer not to wear them.

  • Sony please please please add an audio balance control slider! A lot of people have hearing problems with one ear being better than the other. When using headphones this makes gaming very annoying as sound is always off-centre. A simple audio balance slider in the hardware could help immensely. It shouldn’t be too hard to implement but it would mean the world to me and probably others.

  • All SONY needs to do now is to get the firmware updated for my X900H TV. This is the reason why I bought X900H is for the 4K HDR 120Hz 2.1 HDMI VRR ALLM for PS5. SONY please update your 2.1 HDMI capable TV’s with VRR ALLM!

  • Love all of this, but please for the love of God give us 2K resolution support. Been using my gaming monitor on my XBox since day 1, but for some reason PS5 still can’t support the resolution.

  • what about VRR ?!?! ok this update is cool , but at this point of time and nearly one year after the console release and yet there is not even an explanation why we don’t have it !! please you have to explain to your customers …

  • I would like to have an faster way to switch between game chat and party chat, it’s way to complicated on the ps5, was much easier and faster on ps4

  • Remote Play on phone (Android).
    Still no gamepad support?
    Those touch controlls are sucky.

  • FIX for the CMOS Baterry issue on PS4? WHEN?

  • Make the overall trophy tracking system more intuitive similar to how Xbox has innovated theirs. It is nostalgic and pleasing to have a “save screen” pop up showing images of the current game being played while also shuffling through achievements that are currently in progress.

Also allow the trophy viewing screen to view the trophies to cover nearly the entire screen. So horizontally and vertically to cover 15-20 trophies all at once so it saves time from scrolling too much with the way the current system is coded in.

  • All fairly useless features to me. Well, the hard drive thing is hilarious, should have simply been there at launch and was a given to happen eventually.

But not having more than 9 games on your home screen at once is a joke at this point. You can’t even go into your library to press the options button on a older game and press “Check for Updates”. It doesn’t give you that option in the Game Library. Its only the 9 games on the home screen you can do this on. Meaning I have to get a disc for a game and load it up for it to be able to allow me to “Check for Update” on it.
