UPDATE: Pre-order Horizon Forbidden West now: Collector’s and Digital Deluxe Editions detailed

All pre-order details for this awe-inspiring continuation of Aloy’s journey, coming February 18 2022.

Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.

Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.

I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)–both digital and physical*–will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

— Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment

*To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.

Horizon Forbidden West is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles on February 18, 2022! We were ecstatic to finally be able to share the release date with you last week during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, and to see everyone’s reactions to our news.

Pre-orders for the game are available now across the globe, so we wanted to share more details about the various editions that you can get your hands on.

  • Without the Blu-ray Disc in the Collector’s Edition it’s an OFFENCE.

Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst resign INCOMPETENTS

    • Really excited about this game. I ordered the Regalla edition, but like most others I’m disappointed that there’s no disc.
It won’t stop me from playing the game and enjoying the launch, but please don’t make this the standard practice going forward, Sony.

    • Pre-orders other than the launch edition are pretty much sold out. I doubt very much anyone will be resigning over this because people preorder despite all the whining.

  • Regalla edition pre-ordered.

I hope this is the start of a new trend where publishers offer a version of their collectors editions that come with a digital copy of the game.

I only buy games digitally now but miss getting the cool statues from collectors editions.

    • I feel the exact same way! Digital purchaser myself, but glad I can finally get a Collector’s (Regalla) Edition with the digital copy! HYPEDDDD

    • It’s totally fine if they offer a version that does that, as long as they don’t exclude people that want the disc(which they’ve done here).

    • I think it’s quite silly personally, i’m a bit of a ‘collector’ and it’s really disappointing to see the all singing all dancing edition without a disc. I understand with the digital console it’s awkward, but there’s no chance i’d buy a collectors edition without the disc.

  • If you’re going to leave the disc out leave the steelbook out too, I’m fine with it being a download code but what is the point of a case with nothing to put in it??

  • Why is the Steelbook edition so bad? No game DLC like all the other editions? Just a soundtrack? Why does the special edition just skip all the in-game extras?

  • After reading this post. I’m seriously thinking about selling my PS5 and leaving this consumer unfriendly ecosystem.
The decision to limit the standard edition to PS4 only is a joke. PS5 is your new system – support it! Don’t make it harder to get games for it.
Overall – I’ve been seeing this trend on many newly released playstation games, that it is atleast $10 more for PS5, and you must be very careful not to buy something that is PS4 only or you can never upgrade.

I own an Xbox Series X – they have made their ecosystem extremely consumer friendly. They automatically upgrade as many titles to Series X as possible – you don’t have worry about getting screwed buying the wrong version of something. Also they don’t price tier between Xbox one and series x. And…. Gamepass – awesome games that if at all possible support Series X FPS and resolutions… compared to PS Now – PS4 only version of games, no hope of PS5 enhancements.

This greediness of Sony about new generation titles is really disappointing.

    • Its crazy that Sony is treating its inferior technology platform as something premium that people should pay more for. PS platform is inferior to Xbox in every way, be it smart delivery, quick resume, back compat, game pass, rewards system, fps/hdr boost etc. PS was clearly better in previous gen, but it is playing catch up now.

  • This is a joke, right.
When you buy the collectors edition you get a DIGITAL code in a tin box!!! WTF!
    A digital soundtrack, a digital comic….WTH!
Sony you don’t understand that when someone wants to have a game FYSICAL to COLLECT it is should be there to HOLD!
This company is more and more fading away from their fans.
It’s also scummy to put some much produced digital content from the game behind a paywall.
Please try to get in tough with your customers because you are drifting further and further away from reality.

  • This should help a few in the comments.

Collector’s and Regalla Editions aren’t necessarily not available in your country, the links just don’t work (or they’re not available in your country via playstation store). Check the websites of your local retailers. In the UK for example, all editions are up for preorder at Game.

Also photo mode is certainly in the base game, the digital deluxe editions just add a pose and face paint option it looks like.

  • I have a question about this I’d really like answered.

Horizon 1 had at least 1 preorder outfit that wasn’t available in game to everyone as an unlock, only a preorder for some countries outside the U.S. I hated that and I’m still mad. I see the DD, CE, and RE come with 2 outfits and other things like photomode stuff. Will these only be available to those editions or are these simply early unlocks and everyone else will be able to still get them later in the game? Also would these items be available in the PS store for purchase as some kind of DD upgrade pack? I hate preorder only content. Please don’t block of content like that.

  • What a big turn off.
For collectors they would want a physical disk, not digital. It’s just that simple.

  • Wow this is just sad af. I don’t even know where to start. No Discs for CE RE, no large statue for Aloy the Heroine of the series, special edition doesn’t feel that special since the deluxe edition totally kills it, PS4 version is cheaper than PS5. So basically we get punished for adapting early and supporting Sony. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have been very disappointed with Sony since the Start of New Gen.

  • Having a steelbook but not having a physical disc to be able to put inside is extremely disappointing.

    • It’s seriously a horrible decision. The people that buy collector’s editions are the same people that buy discs… What are they thinking?

  • horizon forbidden west Regalla Edition pre-order in canada???????

  • This is disgraceful and disrespectful to PS community. You may as well delete the previous post about Horizon getting a free upgrade path. I am not going to buy this game until that is addressed.

  • Sony, you are really bungling this release. I’ve never seen a more confusing, convoluted upgrade system for any game than what you are doing with Horizon.
I already have a PS5, so that won’t be an issue with me, but you’ve made this a nightmare for people upgrading from PS4. It should be free. It’s first party. Charging an additional $20 beforehand is bad enough, but giving no alternative ways to upgrade (save repurchasing the full game on PS5) is crazy.

  • horizon forbidden west Regalla Edition i just pre-ordered on amazon canada change department to video games to find it

  • I do wish the disc(s) came in the collector’s editions.

  • I just noticed that those editions don’t even have physical discs included. What a JOKE! Regalla order cancelled.

  • No free upgrade? A collector’s edition without a disc? Unbelievable. It’s way better to just wait for the PC version.

  • The Collectors and the Regalla Edition are a joke. This could’ve come with a disc version for ps4 and ps5. And what the heck happened to “free upgrades at no additional cost?”

    • To my knowledge Sony hasn’t actually offered a fee upgrade to any of their properties beside Miles Morales. They’ve charged for the rest, only Ubisoft has been great about it.

  • So if I buy the PS4 Disk version of the game, will I be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for $10 like Ghost of Tsushima Directior’s Cut?

    • Nope. They offer no upgrade path unless you pay $20 more than PS4 version to get the ‘dual entitlement’ version even though they said on their original blog post last year that the upgrade would be free. What a bunch of scumbags…

  • “Stay safe… and wage a bloody war against thrashing machines and rival gangs.” This is why you don’t allow neurotic twitter-speak anywhere near the escapist power fantasy you’ve devoted your life to creating.

  • It’s seriously outlandish that the Collector’s/Regalla editions don’t come with a disc… steelbook, but no disc? What is going on?!

  • Oh… hum just pre-ordered the collectors edition… but glad I read the comments, digital version with a fake case… as I person willing to drop 200 on a collectors edition I kind of want a physical disc to ogle… I know inside my soul it’s dumb… but with game sizes now a days I don’t really leave games dormant on my SSD. And ogling, Ogling.

  • Preorder are in

  • Bit annoying I tried to buy the deluxe and ended up just buying the game it cost the same as it would have for just the game….bit upset

  • VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED that collectors editions will not come with the GAME DISC, who wants a empty steel book?
So if want to take this game to my friends house who lives in another city o when I go to Mexico I have to carry the hole PS5 with me?? The PS5 console is HUGE!
Come on guys, release the games for what we want to pay for
Why no to do a collectors edition for PS5 disc and digital for those who has the digital version, we saw that before on other games.

Thank you for developing a great game (horizon zero dawn) couple years ago

  • What in the world are you guys thinking? You give us a physical collectors edition with a steelbook case, which is for holding a disc, but give us a digital copy?

Just don’t include the game and subtract the cost. Regalla collector’s bundle at 199, and then we as the consumer’s can decide if we want digital or physical. This has been done before, you need to fire whoever put their approval on a digital-copy-only physical collector’s edition because they are not worth even paying a minimum wage in a conservative state.

  • I have never been so disgusted as I am now. Without a physical copy of the game, those CE’s are a complete ecological waste. Sony should be ashamed of yourselves for perpetrating it.

  • This kind of “Ubisoft” suite of special and collector’s editions, screwing us into spending more money, only to have the game on both consoles is all kinds of sleazy and greedy. It’s like they segregate each console as a completely different and incompatible platform from two opposite companies. We should all be able to get both versions from ANY option, from the plain vanilla standard edition to the über ultra special limited collectors unicorn blood stained diamond encrusted edition. I’ll protest with my wallet and get it down the line at next year’s Black Friday Sale when BOTH versions sum under 60$ in the checkout. You just delayed the game even further for me. Maybe by then, Sony’s next strategic move will be to add a DLC and rebrand it “Director’s Cut” just to screw us again with another similar selective price scheme. So, I’ll wait until it comes to PS Plus in response.

  • I want a thunderjaw statue….How can I get one of those?

  • Really, $140 NZ for the standard PS5 edition?!? Sony getting far too greedy!

  • Bad move to not offer an upgrade path for the PS4 disc.

  • No physical disc…So i wont buy even if I do want that toy elephant

  • I was very temped to order collectors edition only to realized there is no disk. A collectors edition with steel case just for show. so what i am collecting here. Disk is a must for CE version. wtf sony. you guys are better than this. dont be greedy

  • “For players looking to have access to both the PS4 & PS5 versions of Horizon Forbidden West, please purchase the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions. Dual entitlement does not apply to the standard and Special Editions.”

HAHAHAHA. Seriously, I was just commenting this earlier. Can you PLEASE not screw up over and over and over again Sony??? This is disgraceful. First, you hold the game back for PS4, nearly a year and a half after PS5’s release…….. then you won’t even give people the 2 versions like EVERY CROSS GEN GAME released the past 10 months since PS5 launched.

Just fire, the people making these decisions, from a cannon into the sun. Please.

Well, get ready for the inevitable and well deserved backlash Sony. Cheers.

    • And, are you “listening to the feedback” here Sony? Or are you going to ignore this too?

And what is the point in 2 Collector Editions without any discs in either? Feels like this was another waste and awful decision that also contributed to the games delay lol.

Like I said this time last week and after this announcement, it still stands….. I am not preordering ANYTHING Sony.

  • So the PS4 and PS5 games are exactly the same game but the PS5 version costs $10 more?!??? Guess what Sony, I’m not going to pay $10 more if the game is not a PS5 exclusive.

I’ll buy it on sale in two years at 75% off.

  • Okay, I don’t mind paying for Collectors Editions, but we need a DISC too!!! I get that we get Digital editions of the game, but I rather get a Disc version for the PS5 and a Digital Version for the PS4. Sony, please address this and fix it. How is it fair to pay $260, which its more than half the cost of a PS5 and no Physical DISC for a collectors edition. PUT A PHYSICAL DISC IN THE COLLECTOR EDITIONS!!! I won’t be buying those editions or buying at launch unless this issue is fixed. The only reason to buy a Collectors edition is for a PHYSICAL collection. What am I going to do with an empty box???? Look at this empty box? Oh, you really like that artist and wanted to buy their limited edition Vinyl? Too bad, you only get the box while we give you a digital version of the album for this ridiculous price. This is crazy, I have never been this annoyed at Sony/Playstation. DON’T BE BETHESDA and be so damn GREEDY!!! $260 should also cover a PHYSICAL DISC version for the PS5!!!!

  • Can’t wait for the game, but everything in this edition overload post is really, really off-putting.

  • No free ps5 upgrade for those of us who buy the standard edition is a greedy move. About time Sony takes a note from Microsoft and learn how to show respect and gratitude to their loyal fanbase. As the console manufacturer who takes a big percentage from first party games it shouldn’t be too much to ask for especially considering that the ps5 is hard to come by and many of us will be forced to buy the ps4 version.

    • Instead of taking a note from Microsoft, US based Sony Interactive Entertainment could learn from pre US (Japan) based SIE and how they did things.

All PSP games worked on the Vita, for free.
All consoles had some kind of backwards compatibility without any extra cost.
Lots of PS3/Vita (later on PS4) digital games were crossbuy, so you got all 2(3) for the cost of 1.

Disrespectful screwing customers over for petty things, charging for online, charging for the same game, making PS+ rubbish, making Europeans pay 40% more, constant price rises, unfair console allocation etc. etc. are all modern SIE things. Sony used to be better.

  • It is very confusing and frustrating. Pricing is very bad. There is not even an upgrade from PS4 to PS5 ?!
It’s just money. It is a shame.

  • Really disappointed the collector’s and Regalia edition aren’t coming to Europe it seems, or at least not Denmark. I’m kinda used to that though

Not surprised by the download code with the collector’s and Regalia edition, and I kinda like it since I’ve been pretty much all digital for a while. Even if I bought the disc drive Ps5

  • Yeah, I’m gonna need a disc with that $360 editions thanks

  • I’ll take the PS5 standard Edition lol

  • Blows my mind somebody actually OK’d this being officially called DUAL ENTITLEMENT

  • I was planning to buy one of the collectors editions for this but with no disc its a pass for me

  • I loved Horizon. Forbidden West looks great and I’m there day one so standard edition for me this time.

But seriously guys this is really starting to feel how much you can get away with regarding convoluted ways of charging more for PS5 editions.

No upgrade path for PS4 version standard just looks bad. Personally, I don’t mind the 10 bucks but this is a total mess look at press headlines everywhere after the reveal.

you’re breaking sales records, is it really worth it?

  • Here’s a nice idea:
Include the PS5 Disc for the CE/RE and offer the PS4 version as a Digital Download. These are your costliest Editions bought by the most loyal fans, so I don’t see much harm in such an approach and you get best of everything. Voila!

  • A Special edition game with no disc is an insult to my intelligence. Sony do better this is ridiculous and unacceptable.

  • Only thing that bothers me is the inevitable Game of The Year Edition

  • Really disappointing that the steelbook in the collector’s doesn’t come with a physical disc. Typically when something takes up space on your shelf, there is something inside. As someone who buys most all of my games physically, passing on it this time.
