First look: PlayStation 5’s next-generation user experience

PS5 UX features revealed: Control Center, Activities, Game Help, and more.

With less than a month until launch, we’re thrilled to share our very first look at the PlayStation 5 console’s user experience (UX). The new UX is completely centered on the player – to provide you a truly next-generation experience with deeper immersion that quickly connects you to great games and a passionate gaming community.

First look: PlayStation 5’s next-generation user experience

We believe your play time is valuable and should be meaningful, and all the new features we’re delivering are inspired by that concept and vision. The new UX introduces several new features designed to make your gaming experiences more fun, engaging, personalized and social.

One of the highlights is a new Control Center, which provides immediate access to almost everything you need from the system at a single press of the PlayStation button on the DualSense wireless controller – all without leaving the game.

PS5 UX

We’ve also added a new feature called Activities, designed to bring you closer to the key elements of gameplay. Activities are displayed via on-screen cards in the Control Center, which enables you to discover new gameplay opportunities, go back to things you missed, jump directly into levels or challenges you want to play, and much more. Some Activity cards can be put in picture-in-picture mode, so you can view them without having to leave the game.

Navigating the interface, switching between games, and hopping into online matches occurs quickly, as we rebuilt the entire software stack from the console to the network to bring you a truly next-generation experience. We believe the less time you spend waiting to interact with the system, the more time you will have to spend playing games.

PS5 UX

We wanted to give you an early peek at a part of the PS5 UX journey in our video walkthrough, so we hope you enjoy the tour. Also, keep in mind this is in a pre-production environment, so there may be some minor changes, but it’ll give you a taste of what to look forward to when PS5 launches in November.

We can’t wait for you to check out PS5’s next-generation UX for yourself next month! Let us know which feature you’re most excited about in the comments.

  • Hey, im wondering, would it be better to pre order the PS5 or should i wait for bundles? and also what are the playstation bundles

  • Yes , I like it too but is expensive bro
I don’t say it isn’t fantastic but the wireless controller will be with the same buttons?

  • Playstation, please can you make the game page or store like the steam page? It has all the information in it ,the users reviews ,statistics ,the feauters… its so helpful and engaging .and maybe also this way the rates and likes will have a meaning in the playstation and more people will use it.

  • Quick question about backwards capabilities: If I have a disc version of a game will I be able to download it for free digitally on the PS5?

  • looks like a great redesign. :D

  • This seems super fussy and in the the way pretty much all the time.

I just want to play games dudes.

Also, locking OS features behind PS Plus? Not super in love with that either. “Wanna watch a cheat video? That’ll be £6.99 thank you”

Nah. That’s some EA bull right there.

  • Looking pretty amazing! Love the awesome new features that come with this UX! Just please make sure the Home screen is fully customizable in terms of content. Nothing should be forced on us. Please listen to your CUSTOMERS!! We’ve been complaining about this for several years on the PS4, only to be largely ignored. :(

  • Have there been any word on NVME SSD and External Hardrive compatibility? Which ones will run at the speed required etc. ?

  • Will the PS5 support Dolby Atmos and DTS X?

  • i hope the PS 4 Pro get some UI enhancement

  • I wish y’all would make this console for me to play my ps1 2 and 3 games.. spent thousands on games because I buy new and would be nice to play all with pulling out every console

    • I don’t disagree with you, but MS has always had backwards compatibility and how has that worked out for them? It’s lead MS to loosing ever gaming generation and will continue to loose every gen. Sony will never loose having around 60 more years in specializing in building electronic hardware, software and dealing with the consumer.
MSs trillions of dollars can’t by 60 years in specializing in building electronic hardware.

  • Turns out the ps5 cannot handle a wishlist and having on the games store page screenshot or videos.
Sound more like a downgrade not an upgrade.

  • A family friend got an email about paying off the ps5 little by little and was wondering how I could get on that too? Thank you to any responses! :)

  • Can’t wait, not long to go now.

  • I have to give a standing ovation to the Sony PS5. Sony is the only company to actually made a next generation gaming console. When it comes to next gen everything should be next gen games, controller, UI ect ect. If you can play next gen games on last gen consoles than thats NOT truly next gen just a console that upscale old games and will run newer games as well a bit faster.

Sure the PS5 Is a bit big but if you have a good desktop gaming PC take a look at it and tell me if its small? I’ll bet the answer is NO. Bigger is Better as they say and Sony hit a grand slam this generation just like they do every generation. Everything about the PS5 just SCREAMS next gen. Its futuristic look, UI, Controller, SSD, Custom GPU and Just the pure thought and ingenuity in the cooling system and design of the console is just unbelievable.

Thank you Sony for a 5th time for making the best console every generation.
